Bought this for my friend for his birthday, and he loves it. Father-in-law was a little jealous, even. :) Built solid, but light enough to move around for projects. Easy to use ruclips.net/user/postUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe and makes great precision cuts. Doesn't come with a laser mount, but the fence is straight as an arrow and if you measure carefully, it's not a problem. Can handle dimensional lumber with ease, but of course, there's a limit to how thick. Handled a 4x4" post without a problem, but 4x6" we had to flip and cut twice. Only thing we've noticed is make sure to tighten the nut that holds the saw blade when you take it out of the box and maybe check up on it occasionally. For some, this is probably a no-brainer, but we neglected to do this and a few months in, found the motor running but the blade spinning at about half speed or less. Tightened the nut, and problem was solved. Very happy with this purchase. Dewalt makes sturdy stuff.
Sorry, but this is false information. I actually looked at the diagrams in detail and the parts on the 779 and 780 have changed simultaneously. The did not downgrade the 780 to 779's parts. The main parts have always been the same for both machines. It appears that the only downgrading they have done is taking parts off the 779 like the extra bevel stops, the metal bevel wheel, and the full depth lock. That is their bargain saw so it makes sense to strip it and save money on parts many non-professionals will rarely need or use. Did you actually research any of the parts individually? I can see some parts are now combined. Like the armature, 147 on type 22, looks to be a better design than the older models that had five small parts make up that one part. Now it comes assembled as a single unit. It could be they are using more advanced and efficient parts. Of course, they are always trying to save money, but that does not necessarily mean the new saws are being built with inferior parts.
Getting my new DeWalt DWS 779 tomorrow. My Other EQUAL choice was this HF Hercules! Tie breaker was the "Extende warranty"! DeWalt $69 for "3" extra yrs. Home Depot Hercules $99 for "2" extra yrs
Bear, dude, I can’t pay attention to any of your videos and the images throughout the videos because I’m staring at you, the freaking bear. You’re funny man! Lol
I lucked out with getting the 779 for well under $300 and then the light kit for $60. Had an electrician friend install it with upgraded wiring. For the hundreds of dollars saved, it’s well worth voiding the warranty. Thanks for the thorough information “Smokey” 🤣🤣
@@lackadaisicalwanderer1336 you can get several others for around the same price but for me the shadow line was my determining factor, lasers are ok but shadow is super accurate and show exactly where tooth ends. Hercules is hands down the best bang for buck out there but I get several will never get on board with the brand. Been using it for over a year and it is has served me flawlessly and most importantly accurate.
I've had the 779 for around 10+ yrs and have trimmed no many telling how many thousands of ft of base, crown, shoe mould, window trim, shelving, pressure treated posts and dimensional lumber, hardwood and laminate flooring. The list goes on and on. I finally bought another 779 today due to a bearing being spit out in pieces for the last month. I have nothing but praises for my $400 saw!!!!!! Just my two cents. One thing I wish it had a longer stroke-it doesn't cut 1x12 completely without lifting the board to finish cut and cutting 5 1/4 speed base will hit the neck on my old saw from one direction. Hoping this 779 will cure those two issues.
I have 2 of the dws780 that I purchased when the model first came out and it runs strong everyday it gets used 6 days a week … I have them mounted on the Ridgid mobile stand which I really like also
So, in short, yes, the 779 is the 780 without the shadow line And, you can un-void your warranty by swapping the old parts back in before taking the saw in for warranty claim if you need to.
Regardless of how expensive of a tool you have in your hands, it is only as good as the carpenter pulling the trigger. I am a master carpenter and have the DeWalt 779 with the added light and have no issues whatsoever.
“It is only as good as the carpenter pulling the trigger”. So true that’s why after looking at both Hercules and DWS 780 I went with Hercules, couldn’t justify spending @ twice for the DeWalt. Was dead on out of box and has been working fantastic for over a year now, actually surprised at how nice the blade it came with is as well.
True (and now very embarrassing) confession: I am a hobbyist woodworker and had been happy for years with my DWS780. I fell for the Festool hype. I saved up my nickels and bought a Festool Kapex almost entirely based on the dream of the vastly improved dust collection for my small shop. I honestly cannot tell the difference between dust collection on the Dewalt versus the Festool. I have spent a ton of time trying to change the setup to improve the dust collection on the Festool and I have wasted my time. Even bought some gadgets from FastCap etc. I was expecting the "Porsche versus the Nissan" but I would say it is more like a guy who spent a lot of money on a fancy Nissan and wishes he could get his old reliable Honda back. Please don't throw me out of the den.
You are able to recognize that it's just hype and are honest about that, no one should hate on you for that. Most festool, snap on, Milwaukee owners are fanboys and will knowingly deny that they fucked up
Hello Bear , thanks for all your reviews, a question to you have you try the Delta/Ridgid Cruzer????? what is your feedback about that MiterSaw???? any suggestions? Thanks Again
Bear, i prefer a 10 inch sliding miter saw for compactness and cheaper blades. Would enjoy hearing you discuss 10 inch vs 12 inch, and a comparison of the 10 inch sliding miter saws.
I agree with you! Specially when you have a big job that you will have to go thru a lot of blades. Even 7 1/4 can do most cuts a 10 inch can do. Another plus is that is way lighter than a big 12 inch. Still love my 12 miter saw tho.
@@toolhead147 Get the 7 1/4" kobalt sliding miter saw at lowes. I will do any cut you need. The cordless is awesome it's about $260.00. they have a corded one that's even cheaper but it my only be a single bevel. I am a contractor and have 12" DeWalt double bevel and a 10" bosch slider double bevel. The 7 1/4" is so light to move around.
I looked at the dewalt and the Hercules. I actually bought a Makita 12 double bevel slider. First Makita tool ever, I'm hardcore black and yellow, I love this saw. It's all about what works for you. Glad to hear you sounding better as well.
This comment is coming a year later (12/09/2021) so I guess things change, but the Hercules miter saw no longer comes with a 1 year warranty. I just bought one on the Black Friday deals ($335) but the warranty is 90 days. I also am seeing the DeWalt DMS779 at Home Depot for $399. If I would have added the extended warranty on the Hercules the prices would be the same so starting to wonder what's the point of buying the Hercules. My nearest DeWalt service center is 90 miles away so perhaps the DeWalts longer warranty is not a deciding factor. I can 't pass judgement on the Hercules yet, all I've done is get it together and make sure it runs. I'm now looking at the Hercules vs DeWalt table saw and am having the same thoughts. Any opinions?
Now there is a "Type 23" for the DWS780...did they bring the quality back up to the original Types? Or did they swap out higher quality parts with even more cheaper parts?
almost, the motor housing and armature on the 2 are the newer type that is on all new 779s an 780s. I don't know if that is a bad thing or a good thing but you may have a hard time getting the parts for the type 1.
I just found your channel based on a search for the exact same thing you covered. I am in desperate need of a miter saw and have always used DeWalt but wow. Thank you and you have a new sub. Well, really cuz of the bear lol. Love it. Great job.
I just bought one. RETURNING ITEMS PURCHASED IN STORE - If for any reason you are not satisfied with an item purchased from Harbor Freight Tools, you may return the product within 90 days for a full refund or replacement, whichever you prefer. The limited warranty term is 90-day (Ninety Days!) beginning on the date of invoice. You must provide the original receipt to receive an exchange or refund.
So I'm curious....I have a DW708 from 17 years ago. Zero problems. It is 4000rpm. The DWS780 is 3800rpm. I am under the impression that my current saw might have a better quality motor than the 780??? I just bought the 780 and am wondering if I should take it back??
i also have a dw708 made in 2000 when they first came out, it to has been a reliable work horse, i just picked up a dws779 type 22 as back up due to the now number of discontinued/nla parts for the 708.and it's age looking closely there are many parts on a 780 that are not on the 779, to start there are NO 22 and 33 deg stop palls on each side, there is NO slide lock or provisions to add it on the slide castings, yes NO light, and they now come with a worthless 32 tooth cross cut blade not the 60 as the 20 and 21 types did, lucky HF tools has good cheap 60/80 and 96 tooth blades i'm sure there are more parts i have not seen missing , yet what ticks me is the statement on the motor, made in taiwan and the metric threads .same was found on the dw724 stand, metric screws and fittings made of soft metal, i'm thankful 6mm is close to 1/4 and 8mm close to 5/16 as i replaced them all with normal USS and SAE threaded just for ease of being able to garb from a local HW if we lose one
Dewalt 779 was $399 at Lowe's including a free $200 stand. 10% off for military, 10% off using discounted gift cards, sold the stand for $120 on Craigslist. Bought the XPS light handle kit for $70 (I highly doubt they void your warranty for that but keep the old handle just in case). Total cost was less than the Harbor Freight and let's be honest Dewalt > HF
I hope that saw works great for you but you want to talk honesty? I've tested both saws and the Herc was on par with the old 780 and in the past 2 years has proved it. I get feedback from thousands of people. I have only 2 negative comments and both were instantly replaced at the store. I have countless horror stories of people trying to deal with DW service centers. In fact, most of the large pro teams that I talk too just dump the DW if it breaks as dealing with DW service is just a waste of time for them.
@@denoftools you make a compelling argument and that very well may be true and I know HF is trying to go higher end by differentiating the Hercules vs Bauer vs the cheap Chicago tools that I'm used to, but I already have a preconceived bias from the past 20 years that HF is for cheap throw away tools and if you want quality and a tool that lasts you go to Dewalt or Milwaukee etc and you often get what you pay for. And if the prices are comparable (as is the case with the 779 light mod hack) then you go for the Dewalt every time. Perhaps a tear down video is in order so we can compare the quality of the internals!
@@denoftools and if the Hercules did come out on top after a tear down I wouldn't even be upset because the other thing that Dewalt has is resale value. I can usually unload my Milwaukee or Dewalt tools for pretty close to what I paid in many cases because I usually pick them up on sale. In this particular example, with the 779 I'm all in under $300 so I'm pretty sure I could sell it for even more than I paid. If we are comparing the Hercules at $300 vs the Dewalt 780 at $500-600 then that's a different story I suppose and I really would be interested in a tear down video to see if the Hercules tried to cut any corners (no pun intended)
@@kdiggz2193 I find it ironic when people say they don't trust HF because they made cheap tools for years as your argument applies to both Dewalt and Milwaukee. You should watch my history vids of both DW and Milwaukee. They are not what you think they are.
I live in the Atlanta area and there is a dewalt service center in Norcross which is just up the road. I got a DWS779 and just got the light kit in. Last miter saw I bought was a Chicago Electric from Harbor Freight some years ago because I was poe, but I’ve got more disposable income now and Lowe’s had a really good sale on the DWS779 around Father’s Day so I bought it. I bought the Chicago Electric also because I thought Dewalt was too proud of their stuff but that Chicago electric wasn’t great. The blade guard was flimsy and of poor design and quality. I won’t buy another power tool from Harbor Freight again regardless of what someone says on RUclips. There is no question in my mind I made the right choice with the DWS779 especially with the Dewalt service center nearby. All I’ve bought in the past couple of years is dewalt tools and the only complaint I’ve had is the 20 volt XR brushless drill gets really hot around the black park just above the trigger(not the spinning part but the non spinning part). Other than that I’ve been very happy with Dewalt. Milwaukee and Dewalt is a sure thing. Maybe the Hercules miter is good, maybe it’s not. You’re always rolling the dice with Harbor Freight. The true test of any product is will it stand the test of time. That Hercules may perform great the first year or two, but only time will tell if it truly lives up to the praise it’s getting in this video.
I own the 779 and added a laser guide from Oshlun for 24.00. So far I've been very happy. My only complaints are the space it takes up vs the Bosch or Delta Cruzer. Would love to see a comparison of those two. Also, the stock hold down clamp is pretty lame. Of course, I want the Festool Kapex or Cruzer now that I own this one lol.
My first was a DW 708. It had a vernier scale and that let you accurately cut to one quarter of a degree with ease. The rails were vertical, so if they bound with sawdust, the saw stayed in the kerf instead of rubbing on the sides. The guard had slots so you could look through them and line up the blade edge with your mark.
I have a 708 that I bought new about 17 years ago. I just bought the 780 but have not taken it out of the box. The 708 is 4000 rpm. The 780 is only 3800 rpm. It makes me wonder if the old 708 has a better quality motor???
I bought my 780 about 4 years ago on sale for $399 on a Black Friday deal. Not sure if it's a type 1,2,3 or 4, but I thought there appeared to be a difference in the motor between it and the 779. That and it had the shadow line. It's been a good saw, so far.
I bought the Chicago Electric 12" saw about 5 years ago and it's been great under moderate use (2-3 times/month). This was well before the Admiral and Hercules were available. If it ever fails me, I'll be replacing it with the Hercules and the extended warranty. I always buy the extended warranty on Harbor Freight power tools, it's cheap insurance in case I get that 1 in 100k that happens to be bad. For now though, my Chicago is still running fine and I haven't even changed out the brushes but, I DO know where the extra set that it came with are lol!
Could specify where this 1 year warranty is for this Hercules 12 inch miter saw? I have looked everywhere and all I am seeing is the standard 90 day warranty.
I picked it up as well for that deal! I had already pre-purchased the kit from MM Tools. I opened it up and swapped it. The new DWS779 is a type 22 and apparently that bottom replacement handle is now the same. I swapped it anyway, worked like a charm.
Look through the youtube videos on the kit replacement and one video explains how to install so as to be removed and put saw the way it was if you ever need warranty work.
@@charlesreece1704 Yes. I saw that one. I believe the company was MMtools. edit: Here's the link to the kit, or you can buy all the parts separate for yourself. www.mmtoolparts.com/store/miter-saw-upgrade-kit-dewalt
How you enjoyed your video and subscribed looking forward to looking back at you other content .I have a dewalt 780 type 2 would that still fall into the category with the lesser quality parts ? Thanks
Now I'm even more confused which one to buy. I buy tools for a lifetime investment so when I spend my money I want the best. I want the laser light so do I get the 780 which supposedly is plastic now or a 779 which sometimes has plastic and add a laser sight?
I’m a pro and do construction and I never have a problem with mine and it’s still kicking and the hercules is a nice saw but no one knows how long that tool will actually last compared to Dewalt I personally still don’t fully trust HarborFreight power tools very much but I’m glad to see there coming up in the world
Thanks for your videos. I'm very tempted by the Hercules. Are there any crown stops that fit? Getting ready to trim my entire house and that would make my life easier.
There are several RUclips videos on how to do your own crown stops with a miter saw. When I trimmed my kitchen, I hand cut my joints and did very well. Now, I have the Hercules miter saw and plan to trim the rest of my house with it. I'll start in the spare bedroom for practice. By the time I get to my bedroom and the living room, I'll have it figured out. Remember, wood putty, caulk, and paint, are your friends.
Bear... I love the channel!!! My first complaint regarding HF stuff is they do not offer parts to make repairs. Second is they require me to keep a receipt to return stuff "under life time warranty". And thirdly, I bought one of their first generation 12 inch sliders and the darn thing was EXTREMELY loud and so was the next one as I thought it didn't have any grease in the bearings. It was crappy though it was cheap... so for me the jury is still out with HF in general. Should you do any more power tools reviews consider the noise and vibration differences!!! My Dewalt though over 15 Y.O. still cuts like smooth butter compared to the HF original (which feels more like a chainsaw that was run over with a dump truck). Again... LOVE THE CHANNEL!!! Glad you are feeling better!
I also just got the Delta Cruzer. It has the drop shadow light as well as the articulating arm like the Bosch does. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do.
Couldn't agree more the shadow line is far superior to a laser, was leaning DWS780 until Herc came out. After watching reviews of Herc users for a year couldn't talk myself into paying $200+ more
I haven't used my 10" Cruzer as much as my 2 previous miters but I really like it. It's very smooth. I wish I had had it when framing out the basement over the Ryobi I had at the time. I used the master force universal tool mount to put it between garage cabinets and the same work height. Looking forward to hearing what you think about the Cruzer. Menards had them on sale this summer and I got HD to price match that price plus the 11% shipped to my house.
Bought the Admiral compound miter saw. Got the Chicago Electric folding stand and they have been using them very well. Does what I need it to do and then can fold it up and get it out of the way because I am very limited in space. They were both on sale. I showed the setup to a friend who is a builder and he and his company are going to check out the Hercules and other tools for all the reasons you were mentioning in this video. Glad to see you back online. Still praying for you and the family.
Be glad you didn't buy the Chicago Electric Saw. I rarely return an item, but I returned two of those saws without ever doing a project. I couldn't get either saw set up properly and the safety guard would contact the blade when pulling down. It did this on both saws and I could not correct it. I didn't run the blade while pulling down or it would have shattered the guard. I finally got the guard to barely clear the blade so I could make some test cuts. I chopped up a couple of 2×4s trying to tune it up, and I was very nervous on every cut, wondering if that plastic guard was going to shatter in my face. I finally gave up and returned the saw, both times, due to the exact same problems. I saved up and bought the Hercules. Once I got it dialed in, I was off to the races, and could not be happier with that purchase. For my first project, I built a farmhouse style bed for my wife and it easily looks store bought...or better. She absolutely loves it, and It's solid wood...no press board like the crap they're cranking out at the furniture store. Now, I need another project because I discovered I like making sawdust.
I've only ever owned DeWalt miter saws. It's the only thing I have total brand loyalty for because I've never ever been let down on a saw I arguably use more than any other saw in my arsenal. I hate DeWalt's cordless stuff, I hate their bits, not a fan of much else they make. My fourth & most recent was a DWS779 earlier this year. I dont give a flip about that laser light. Don't need it, it's just an unnecessary bell & whistle like back up cameras in cars. If it let's me down (which I don't expect it to,) I may consider buying a different brand, but until then, I'm only buying other brands for cheap Christmas gifts (by the way, my mother-in-law is going to love her $89 10" Metabo that you gave us a heads up on. She been hinting for a miter saw of her own for years.)
To each his own, but for the record, the 780 comes with a white LED light (not a LASER). The LED is positioned so that the saw blade itself casts a shadow showing the kerf (ie width) of the saw blade on the surface you're about to cut. So no laser, just a relatively bright indication of just where the blade will cut. You can place you cut line on whichever side of the kerf makes sense given which is the waste side of the cut...
Trim carpenter here. They are not the same. Bought a 779 because price was 399 compared to 599 for 780. The 779 obviously doesn't have a laser... but that's unnecessary for a trim carpenter. Bottom line is 779 only lasted 1.5 yrs motor started spitting out hard plastic pieces and siezed up. 1.5 yrs is shit. Ive got 780s that are 10 yrs old. I suspect the 779 is made of much more plastic parts on the crucial drive components. Can I get a 780 with metal gears anymore?
That still doesnt make sense of why they would turn the 779 and the 780 into the same saw minus the light. on the Lowes website it gives different specs. such as bevel capacity, depth of cut at 90 degrees and 45 degrees, and maximum miter cut. so is it the same saw or not?
Hey bear.. I had an old delta that I finally had to replace, and looked at lots of saws as replacements and ended up buying the hercules. Hope I never have to replace my ancient delta table saw.
Honestly the only thing keeping me from buying the Hercules is the miter locking mechanism, the dewalt locking mechanism is superior , I’ve used a lot of saws of the years and have always hated the twistlock Mechanisms
Could you elaborate on the difference the type 21 on 780 and 779 have the same exact same armature and field case. Are we talking about bearings being different or metal being mim as opposed to machined from solid stock?
The Porsche vs. Nissan is a really bad analogy. What you're talking about is value engineering. Comparing the 911 GT3 to the base 911 is a better comparison.
Can anyone update this conversation? I called a local Dewalt service center and confirmed that the motors/bearings/etc were different. It seems that while the specs are still virtually the same, the components are upgraded in quality on the 780. Dewalt simply devalued the 779 to the consumer by taking some features Away (or up valued the 780 by adding features depending on how you look at it). They certainly weren’t going to market the 779 as having inferior grade components - that’d be stupid. Can someone confirm? If this is the case, I’d be looking at the 780 for sure. At that price, I think I like the Makita ls1219l better - except you can’t nest large crown as the fence needs to be removed for mirrors.
You can go on Dewalt's service website and see that the internal parts are now identical (at least they were a year ago). The 780 used to be better but now they both take the 779 parts and it looks like it's just the light that is different.
@@denoftools - yes, I actually did that and in fact, most of the parts are the same. Interestingly, the 780 type 22 and older use the same armature as all types 779, but did use a different field and case. It is actually less costly as a replacement (around $161) then the one on the 779 (and now the 780 at around $205). Not sure what that’s telling me. You would assume the 780 cost down and not up. For the 780 type 23, it lists both parts for the field and case - the one on tge 22s and older as well the one on the 779. So, with that said, there are only two significant differences in parts: 1. The base is different and the 780 is about $20 more or so replacement Cost, not a big deal and I’m not sure what significance it is. 2. The support housing with bearings for the rail guides is significantly more expensive on the 780 (different part numbers - $163 to $250). This is a big deal I think as it would not only help it glide easier, but if the bearings are upgraded enough, it could make it tighter with much less deflection when extended. This would be a big deal and possibly worth buying the 780 to get more accurate cuts. Now you have better bearings, the XPS system and a few other features that could justify the 780.
Red (and Jeff): Glad to see you back in action. Hope the family is recovered as well. Man, I’m getting old. When I was a kid the RAS was promoted as a “total shop solution,” with accessories like dado stacks, molding heads, chucks for routing and horizontal boring, and rotary planers. Now you’re lucky if you can get 200 bucks for them on craigslist. I know things change, but some of the old memories are sweet, like the aroma of my dad’s pipe in the shop, packed with Sir Walter Raleigh, while the old 12 inch Dewalt glided through 8/4 oak with a hand-filed carbon steel blade ....
I've been trying to sell mine along with an old Delta jointer for $200 total and can't get any takers. That was my dad's goto saw in his carpentry business and I'm not going to give it away.
The screeching of the DeWalt fanbois is GLORIOUS! Today is a good day to disparage DeWalt! (Disclaimer--I own DeWalt, Ryobi, Craftsman, and Harbor d'Freight tools, so I'm an equal-opportunity offender.)
Have you done any reviews about impact swivel sockets? I'm curious about the impact swivel sockets from harbor freight. Can you point me towards that video if you have created it?
I like my Hitachi 12 sliding mitre saw. Had a 10 Hitachi that I loved before, but it was not a slider. I bought the 10 inch about 5 years ago when I retired and started woodworking. Loved that saw so much that I kept it 3 years after I got the 12 inch, but never used it.
I can honestly say I would not have a lot of respect for any contractor with hurcules or Bauer brand tools on a job site. Yeah sure Hazard Fart tools are dirt cheap and could be somewhat comparable to the top 3 (makita, Milwaukee, Dewalt) I know that if I spend the extra hundred sheckles or so and I know I will have a qualify well made product. I have used all the cordless tools hazard fart has to offer vs both Milwaukee M12 and 20v Dewalt XR, and it’s night and day the quality you get from Milwaukee and Dewalt. Also in my opinion, if you know that the contractor is willing to shell out big money for nice high quality tools, then It makes me feel better in believing the contractor knows what he is doing and is successful at the same time. The 779 is lighter, no shadow light, and a lot of the little extra preset angle stops. The 779 weighs maybe 45lbs, while the 780 weighs 70lbs. Also you argue that sending the tool in for warranty repairs for Dewalt vs hazard fraud is pretty weak.. I’m sure the durability and reliability in the Dewalt is far better and will last years longer than the HF junk. HF is a good place to get a tool to practice with and beat up, or for the DIYer that will use said tool a handful of times.. you get what you pay for, and I’ll happily pay more for something I get to use for years and years longer than the Hilarious Fake branded tools.
The Rigid 12" sliding miter saw when on sale, is a better saw for the money. All though the Rigid is noticeably heavier. Would be a nice comparison video. Happy holidays Bear stay safe.
I use the dewalt daily and have always wanted to make the switch to hf but the angle adjustment is not as quick to use as the dewalt that would be one think I would like to see hf upgrade. Then I would make the switch
I had a Harbor freight 12” slider trying to save money as an independent contractor. Saw served as a mate to my Dewalt 10” miter saw. The Harbor freight was a huge piece of crap as the lift spring started sagging after a few months, not to mention the tolerances were awful compared to the dewalt. I returned it twice and got a new one each time but it continued to happen. On the third failure I just returned it for a refund. Not worth my time to keep returning a tool. By comparison, I still have that Dewalt 10 inch saw 10 years later and it gets used every week. I need my tools to operate properly. I will never buy a frequent use power tool from harbor freight ever again. Most of their hand tools are fine and their air tools and components seem great. BTW, I replaced that 12” slider from HF with a Hitachi and that saw is not fit for contractor use either. Slowly the saw started falling apart on me… cheap plastic dust chute somehow slowly warped and gets caught in the blade, dust collection is about 2% sending the remaining 98% into the air, the spring metal gasket that allows the saw to spin just started ripping itself apart and came out in pieces, and just today I went to use it and the laser was all off and can’t be adjusted into spec as the plastic housing is warping. Too much cheap plastic on this saw. It did have a much better first year of life than the HF saw, but after about 2 years problems started. You probably think I’m just too hard on my saws, but that would be inaccurate. My DAILY USE saw is my 10” Dewalt and it’s the saw I’ve longest and have had zero issues with. My 12” miter saws get pulled out only as needed, for larger crown molding or wider lumber cuts. Probably once a month or so I use the 12” on average. So I need to buy a new 12” slider atm. I’m looking at Dewalt first, and it does piss me off that they are basically charging $300 for an LED light that I absolutely need on my saws. I won’t consider Harbor freight or Metabo because of my experiences. I may try a Rigid.
Purchased the dws779 with free his stand from Lowe’s. 400.00 plus tax but including that stand made it well worth it. Though I will admit seems like hf is getting it together on some of the offered tools.
Please update this video. Live what you do. I looked into hercules. Almost none of what was true especially warranty no longer is accurate There have been 5 changes on the 779 and 780 since this video. Also the new hercules isnt the same as it was from what im hearing from old vs new owners. Theres quite a few differences now between the 779 and 780 which will only be appreciated with pros especially molding guys. The bevel lock knob is plastic on 779 vs the metal on 780. The bevel stops for molding on 780 is missing on 779 The slide lock on 780 is missing on 779 So maybe they built out the 779 now with cheaper parts and missing parts. And maybe check again because the parts diagrams are different now in 2024 with same parts. Either they downgraded the 779 or re-upgraded the 780. My 780 bucks when starting and stopping and my buddy's 779 doesnt do that. Whether its a good thing or not who knows. Some complain that its too much for DIY person lol.
The 779 he shows is the type 22 with all those changes from the original. It came out about 8 years ago with the features removed to likely push upgrading to the 780. The older 779 weighed 13 pds more than the current 779/780 as well.
It is illegal in California to have/use a radial arm saw for commercial use. It can only be used at home. Alsoit is illegal to sell a table saw without a riving knife in California.
I'm generally a dewalt guy, but I have to say that I bought the Hercules table saw last spring. It's a fine little tool. I take it out on jobs since my grizzly is not exactly portable. I have a dw717 10" slide I usually keep in the shop I've had it since they first came out. It's been a beast. I use an older 706 12" double bevel non slide on site work. I've been considering upgrading to a 12" slide for jobsite work. If I do it'll most likely be the Hercules. The table saw has been awesome. Shine on bear!
I don't buy from Harbor Freight anymore. I bought one of their huge rolling toolboxes because it was supposed to be as good as the other guys and it barely moves when loaded with tools. It was OK at first, but now I can barely move it and half the drawers are full of relatively light things.
Home Depot
Hercules $99 for "2" extra yrs
Bear, dude, I can’t pay attention to any of your videos and the images throughout the videos because I’m staring at you, the freaking bear. You’re funny man! Lol
COMPLETELY AGREE
I lucked out with getting the 779 for well under $300 and then the light kit for $60. Had an electrician friend install it with upgraded wiring. For the hundreds of dollars saved, it’s well worth voiding the warranty. Thanks for the thorough information “Smokey” 🤣🤣
I bought the hercules around March. Use it alot, almost everyday.. performs excellent. Very happy with my purchase
You can get kobalt around the same price
I bought my xtr hammer drill off a guy who sold me the kit for 60 bucks
How does one know which type/version they have? When did DeWalt downgrade the parts to the 779 spec?
It’s written on the label. Mine is a type 21 I think.
I have 2 of the dws780 that I purchased when the model first came out and it runs strong everyday it gets used 6 days a week … I have them mounted on the Ridgid mobile stand which I really like also
Does anyone know when the DHS790 will be upgraded/replaced?!? That saw kicks ass on the 779 & 780...
So, in short, yes, the 779 is the 780 without the shadow line
And, you can un-void your warranty by swapping the old parts back in before taking the saw in for warranty claim if you need to.
Regardless of how expensive of a tool you have in your hands, it is only as good as the carpenter pulling the trigger. I am a master carpenter and have the
DeWalt 779 with the added light and have no issues whatsoever.
Most festool, snap on, Milwaukee owners are fanboys and will knowingly deny that they fucked up
Well, at least your Kapex motor hasn't failed on you like several other people.
@@MAGAMAN Not yet :) Thanks
Makita ls002g is what you want.
I have the DWS780 I got years ago. I wonder if it's the type 1?
Check right on top of the motor it say on the tag
@@craigcanterbury264 thanks. Glad mine IS a type 1. Glad I bought it back then
I watched this video for the content, but oh my goodness I love your bear virtual presence.
What app, software, or program do you use?
Mine says type 2 and I can't find any info on type 2. It keeps coming up in Google as type 20
How can I identify the model of my saw if the sticker has been removed?
Hello Bear , thanks for all your reviews, a question to you have you try the Delta/Ridgid Cruzer????? what is your feedback about that MiterSaw???? any suggestions? Thanks Again
the warranty on the hercules is no longer true. 90 days. bummer
@@toolhead147
Get the 7 1/4" kobalt sliding miter saw at lowes. I will do any cut you need. The cordless is awesome it's about $260.00. they have a corded one that's even cheaper but it my only be a single bevel. I am a contractor and have 12" DeWalt double bevel and a 10" bosch slider double bevel. The 7 1/4" is so light to move around.
I use a 10" blade on mine , havent tried 7.5
All I can say is I live my Dewalt saw. But that being said largest part for good cuts is your blade.
I looked at the dewalt and the Hercules. I actually bought a Makita 12 double bevel slider. First Makita tool ever, I'm hardcore black and yellow, I love this saw. It's all about what works for you. Glad to hear you sounding better as well.
Makita makes a great saw!
I can
't pass judgement on the Hercules yet, all I've done is get it together and make sure it runs. I'm now looking at the Hercules vs DeWalt table saw and am having the same thoughts. Any opinions?
I'm confused which is the better saw with better parts
Now there is a "Type 23" for the DWS780...did they bring the quality back up to the original Types? Or did they swap out higher quality parts with even more cheaper parts?
you said "they took all the quality parts out", which parts, can you give me some examples of what they actually replaced?
So is the type 1 and type 2 the same in the dws780?
almost, the motor housing and armature on the 2 are the newer type that is on all new 779s an 780s.
Love it. Great job.
Thanks for the amazing info! I’m so glad I watched this all the way through.
I’ve got the type 1 780 is that the higher quality one that has the better motor?
Yep
So, what models of the 780 have the better motor components?
I just bought the 780 and am wondering if I should take it back??
i also have a dw708 made in 2000 when they first came out, it to has been a reliable work horse, i just picked up a dws779 type 22 as back up due to the now number of discontinued/nla parts for the 708.and it's age
looking closely there are many parts on a 780 that are not on the 779, to start there are NO 22 and 33 deg stop palls on each side, there is NO slide lock or provisions to add it on the slide castings, yes NO light, and they now come with a worthless 32 tooth cross cut blade not the 60 as the 20 and 21 types did, lucky HF tools has good cheap 60/80 and 96 tooth blades
i'm sure there are more parts i have not seen missing , yet what ticks me is the statement on the motor, made in taiwan and the metric threads .same was found on the dw724 stand, metric screws and fittings made of soft metal, i'm thankful 6mm is close to 1/4 and 8mm close to 5/16 as i replaced them all with normal USS and SAE threaded just for ease of being able to garb from a local HW if we lose one
What about the flexvolt sliding miter saw is it better thannthe 779 780
I got a hercules because of that old video as well best decision I ever made
I live in the Atlanta area and there is a dewalt service center in Norcross which is just up the road.
I have a Cruzer. I love it. It's tucked up against the wall.
I just got the Cruzer. I'll have to see if I can get my paws on the Bosch.
I just bought a 780. I just started video and have a feeling i wont be happy haha.
But i looked into alot before buying.
I bought the 779 since the quality for my use is very good and not like a contractor use. I did not want to buy beyond my practical need.
I had a warranty repair on one of my dewalt tools and they actually paid for the shipping not me
Could specify where this 1 year warranty is for this Hercules 12 inch miter saw? I have looked everywhere and all I am seeing is the standard 90 day warranty.
Ask a sales associate or shoft supervisor. That is what I did. The supervisor confirmed the 1-year hassle free warranty.
Why am I watching an animated bear try to sell me merch?
I picked up my 779 when Lowes had the HD stand free last week and I've got the replacement handle and light on order the same day
I picked it up as well for that deal! I had already pre-purchased the kit from MM Tools. I opened it up and swapped it. The new DWS779 is a type 22 and apparently that bottom replacement handle is now the same. I swapped it anyway, worked like a charm.
I have the 779 with the light mod. Amazing saw. True out of the box, with no side to side play even fully extended.
I bought the Hercules this past weekend with the 2 year warranty. it is awesome
I got the 779 for 325 at home depot. Ordered the light kit and works great. For a DIY it's a great saw and should last for years
I’m a pro and do construction and I never have a problem with mine and it’s still kicking and the hercules is a nice saw but no one knows how long that tool will actually last compared to Dewalt I personally still don’t fully trust HarborFreight power tools very much but I’m glad to see there coming up in the world
holy shit that was a long ad for the hercules miter saw
I bought the Herc 16 months ago bc someone returned it after cutting 3 boards...$200, out the door...right place, right time deal right there.
THANK YOU for pronouncing Porsche correctly! You're definitely a true car enthusiasts
At 2:21, you show a DeWalt radialarm saw. I had that saw. It was a beast.
So did I, loved that thing.
I still do - it's built like a tank.
Hope all is well to the bear and the mrs.
I have a Delta with the shadowline. Wow. I thought it was a gimmick until I used it for the first time. Far superior to any laser I've ever used.
I wonder if you could replace the 779 motor with a 780 type 1 motor.
Was thinking gimmick too till I got the 780, makes the lasers seem like rubbish.
Great video. Glad to see you back bear.
I just bought a 779 for only $237 almost brand new. Gonna upgrade it with the light and I'll basically have a 780 for $300
I've only ever owned DeWalt miter saws.
Retailers make mistakes. I linked to the parts list directly from DeWALT. They have the same parts, see it for yourself.

I have a DWS779 with the light mod kit and it works great for me.
That's useful information Bear! I currently have a DWS717 and was thinking of upgrading to a 780.
So, with that said, there are only two significant differences in parts:
Sooo let me get this Straight, the DWS 780 Type 20 isn’t better than the Type 1?
No the type 1 is better than the type 20. Type 20 is alot newer.
What about the type 22
@@scottyV1000 still selling?
@@Brian-dj3ru Yes - not much activity lately.
@@scottyV1000 do you live in or near nj?
@@Brian-dj3ru If you consider Eastern Pa near NJ yes. I'm about 20 miles north of Allentown.
I recently purchased the 779, I was so happy to finally have it. Thanks for sorta souring the experience. 🥺
Absolutely nothing wrong with the 779. I've added a few tweaks and do pro work all the time. Great saw and wasn't paying $300 more for the 780
The screeching of the DeWalt fanbois is GLORIOUS!
I need to do a virtual presentation for school and I'd like to assume an avatar like the tool bear does. How does he do that? Is it an app?
he keeps it s secret, but if you research, you can get good info
I went with Rigid 12 inch Miter Saw dual bevel.
The 780 weighs 58 pounds according to dewalt. The 779 is 56.
Good video @TheDenOfTools
I bought the Hercules in June to do my Crown Molding. The saw works great! Now one of these months I'll do the the Crown.
I have 4 guitars like that too - one day i'll learn to play.
I bought a few books to read a couple of years ago. Some day I'll get around to reading them
I bought the 779 and bought the light kit.
Me too, easy way to save 140 bucks
I am glad you are feeling better
I saw the video you made 2 week ago
Send one to AvE! He'll sort it out.
Seconded
Ditto
And throw in plenty of F-Bombs!
He’ll never do one he hates HF and this saw is to well built
@@mskehan19 he does harbor freight and princess auto tools fairly regularly
Glad you are back and up and at 'em!
The Rigid 12" sliding miter saw when on sale, is a better saw for the money. All though the Rigid is noticeably heavier. Would be a nice comparison video.
Happy holidays Bear stay safe.
Bought and returned two due to horrible blade wobble, would disagree based on my personal experience.
good information. Shine on Bear
Hi Jeff and the family. Too bad I wasn't in Vegas, I was 777 to comment. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and videos Rodney
Came for the information, subbed for the 3D talking bear
Purchased the dws779 with free his stand from Lowe’s. 400.00 plus tax but including that stand made it well worth it. Though I will admit seems like hf is getting it together on some of the offered tools.
Please update this video. Live what you do.
I looked into hercules.
Almost none of what was true especially warranty no longer is accurate
There have been 5 changes on the 779 and 780 since this video.
Also the new hercules isnt the same as it was from what im hearing from old vs new owners.
Theres quite a few differences now between the 779 and 780 which will only be appreciated with pros especially molding guys.
The bevel lock knob is plastic on 779 vs the metal on 780.
The bevel stops for molding on 780 is missing on 779
The slide lock on 780 is missing on 779
So maybe they built out the 779 now with cheaper parts and missing parts.
Another good show Oso 👍
It is illegal in California to have/use a radial arm saw for commercial use. It can only be used at home. Alsoit is illegal to sell a table saw without a riving knife in California.

Before long Ca is going to tell you when you can take a piss. The state is run by a bunch of Commies!
@@scottyV1000 lol ur not wrong.
