  • I have finally figured out reasonably fast strategies for all 4 industarn patterns; 24, 26, 27 and 29 seconds remaining depending on the pattern. This has helped me tremendously. -- Watch live at / chumlum

Great run. Always liked this game when it came out in the arcade, but just wasn't good at it. What do you think of the Gamest magazine record of 21,600? Is this actually possible?

Thank you! This is a wonderful game. I'm sure playing it on a machine is much different from playing it on MAME.
I think 21,600, if it is real, is an incomprehensibly good score! There is one possible explanation for how it is possible. There is a theory that MAME doesn't let you pedal quite as fast as on a real machine. This might amount to a few seconds saved per level, with each second being 50 points.
There's a Player with a score of 21,340 who has shared their times. Most of his bests are a few seconds faster than most of my bests, with the big difference being on stage 3 Cliff Rock, where I'm way slower. However a different player did some testing on Cliff Rock, and with savestates managed to get pretty close. So it seems, that we can on MAME be a few seconds slower per level.
My best time on Wind Woods level 1, is slower by about 2-2.5 seconds, but I don't see how all of that time could've been gained. I can see how maybe 0.5-1 second could've been gained maximum.
So yeah, either MAME pedals very slightly slower, or Record holders know some kind of time saves I've just never thought of. If I tried to savestate a best possible run I can do, I might be able to scrounge up a mid to high 20k.
Also, the difference between 21,600 and 21,340 is enormous. I can't imagine where the time has been saved. If only these runs were available to watch ;)

I should mention that the player with 21,340 was a former(?) WR holder for the game on real hardware.

@@prayerchum Oh yea, didn't think about it being played on an original arcade game. You stated the times would be faster because you can "pedal" faster then hitting the key on a keyboard or controller. That would in essence produce a bigger score. Just read your previous reply. That's why some games should be categorized separately like a MAME track and Arcade track for this reason. I'd like to see an "arcade" player play this in person and get a 21k+ score. That would be entertaining to say the least. lol.
