  • THE TRUTH ABOUT ASPERGERS & LONELINESS || Does autism make you lonely?
Making friends and maintaining relationships for aspies and those on the autism spectrum can be extremely difficult due to social anxiety and issues regarding communication. Neurotypical members of the general public can find rudeness in asperger syndrome and not fully understand the difficulties those with high functioning autism can have with social cues and can generally suffer from crippling shyness.
Some high functioning aspies can mask autism signs well and pretend to be someone they are not and then wonder why the relationship falls apart when they all of a sudden turn into somebody different. telling friends you have autism can be the first step into 'curing' loneliness and i decided to share my loneliness in childhood and how I got through my life struggling to make friends. I have to maintain relationships with my children, wife, parents, family, friends and even subscribers.
It can be a lot to manage and sometimes this is when your coping mechanisms come into place when situations become too much. It could be dealing with confrontation, settling an argument, struggling to listen to others opinions, issues empathising with friends, lack of empathy in general, trust issues, change in personality, change in routine, even just the simple things of keeping in touch with others.
We are talking about using social media to build relationships which can hopefully turn into physical relationships. Focusing on a hobby and finding others who share your passions to help with common ground and start conversations.

I get so overstimulated by social interaction ; but am desperately lonely but can’t handle loud noises or random noises when people are around it sucks; I have to force myself to be social for work but it’s terribly exhausting

It is exhausting and unfortunately there's no real solution. Masking is almost a standard requirement for us and watching my daughter go through the sensory side you are experiencing is tough

To be honest I’ve never felt lonely at my house by myself the only times I’ve felt lonely was being around people who were talking to everyone besides me. I’ve found that “neurotypicals” are perfectly fine with ignoring you and letting you eat by yourself for an indefinite period of time. It’s up to you to initiate conversations and “break the ice”

I'm an Aspie with inattentive adhd and my imagination is my favorite part of myself. It feels like a lifesaving superpower in an underwhelming world. Particularly pre-smartphone when social media, search engines, and RUclips weren't at our fingertips 24/7.

Thanks ever so much for this great video Paul, this is wonderful information for anyone working in our industry. I have worked with many incredible Artists and Engineers with Aspergers and the results we have got have always been amazing. Hard work and the talent that results from that are the only thing that matters. A great Producers role is to always to get the best out of the artists we are working with and this comes from understanding each other. Thanks for the great video.

An NT here; thanks for this post. My impression was that because people on the spectrum find stimuli to be challenging (if that’s even true - I could be misinformed), they prefer solitude. Would love for you to address this topic further: What do NTs get wrong about people on the spectrum? For me, I’m sure it’s a lot.
EDIT: I should add that I used to work at a school for young adults with severe autistic impairment. So I’m uniquely UNqualified to understand most ASDers.

This is great, thx for this. Aspie myself. Grew up alone for the same reasons as you no kids my own age around. But I never even thought about it until much later. But like you I created my own world as a kid. Still have no friends, dont hang out with anyone. But I am very happy as a person so I really dont care, I dont feel lonely at all to be honest. I work fulltime with music by myself alone, and after my working hours I play in my studio for a few more hours. Thx for this, I love hearing stories from other aspies esp in the same field. Love your channel and will follow this one now. Cheers
