What is foliar feeding - and how do you do it? Today I explain multiple reasons why you might want to foliar feed, plus talk about chemical vs. organic, then do a foliar feeding demonstration. I cover fertilizing with urine, MiracleGro, DynaGro, Epsom Salts, aerobic vs. anaerobic compost tea and more, and give you Steve Solomon's take. Foliar feeding is a good option for fast growth, getting micronutrients to your plants, helping plants survive drought, high or low pH or touchy plants that need some extra care.

don't use your urine if your on birth control
David, thanks for the awesome info on Foliar Feeding. I've got my bucket ready for tonight, now to drink a lot water. Something told me there would be a new rap with this one. Was not disappointed. You are a regular Pee-Diddy, :-)
Your compost raps are the best I've ever heard !!!!
Just a small physiological point: If you are peeing it out, then it didn't just "pass through" you. It doesn't represent a lack of efficiency at absorption. You HAD to have absorbed it (from the gut) for it to get into the blood, get filtered by the kidney, and end up in your urine.
I never fail to take this into account when I am foliar-feeding myself.
You said the "C" word!!! Cannabis growers!!! Living in the PNW I know a few ;-) Great video, who knew learning could be so fun!!! I really appreciate you're realistic philosophy regarding "organic" vs chemical. David The Guru!!!
Thank you.
this is GREAT. Once the soil gets over 85 degrees here the plants can't get nutrients from the soil so foliar feeding might actually let me have food in September and October this year. Yes I would wait a couple of days before harvesting.
I didn't even think of the cold soil. Good idea!
What you said about foliar feeding is true. I did mine with my home made yeast/rice wash em and just the next day or two the leaves really shows big difference.
Thanks for another concise explanation! Love the channel learning Lots.
Thank for going over this you answered alot of questions.
You bet.
I would always try to avoid watering on top of the plant. Good to know, thanks
Going to try these IF it ever gets warm enough to grow anything this year. End of April, and the trees haven’t budded out yet. Thanks, David.
Ice Age Now!
Your garden is beautiful!
Lots of good tips! Thanks, David!
You bet.
Explosions. Oh David. Only You.
Thank you for this.. I have always added coffee grounds and a slurry of plants to my water to increase nutrition for the plants.. but have been reluctant to pour over the plants.. good to know.. I tend to use a very week mixture. thanks again
Yeah, they'll soak it in. Diluted - no problem.
seems as though the dilution rate changes every time I hear about it so I also just make up my rate as I go. I've occasionally not diluted it at all but that's just so stressful on my nerves I've decided to always dilute the pee, even if it's just tossing some water on roots after I zip. Thanks for explaining a bit about foliar feeding, I'd been taught to try to keep everything off the leaves. Thanks for sharing
I agree on many of your opinions on chemical fertilisers but in my case the organic way is the one to go because I don't like buying in all that fertility. The little I need as an extra shot I get organically then. Other than that I do most of the fertilising via KNF.
Love the kaleidoscope
Thats the kind of scope I have on my riffle
Doing it the organics way is always better than the chemical way, but of course only if there isn't any bad stuff in the organic matter...great video by the way.
Yeah, it's all a balancing act.
David The Good
are the ebsome salts in the category of organic or just pure minerals you were talking about? And does the fertility build in the ground over time for in your opinion?
Urine is good stuff. I foliar feed every 2 to 3 weeks. The rap is great!
I use it to grow amazing lettuce that I sell at the farmers market to yuppies. I'm kidding lol
It's the way of the road, Bubbs. The way of the road.
Thanku.
Good stuff Mr The Good :)
So, perhaps a tour is in order....or an album
At the party: You salad taste amazing, what is your secret?
🥺🤢
Do you ever add a drop or two of soap or detergent to foliar feed to help it absorb? Surfactant was used in applying some chemicals with atomizing spray rigs at one time, overhead application. (Basagram was mixed in a plant based oil with a small % of surfactant added to increase absorption, no water. The rig was called a spin sprayer. It cut the amount of Basagram required by 80%.
I keep reminding myself to add soap. I have done it in the past.
when can you eat your veggies and fruits after foliar feeding them
Do you use liquid kelp fertilizers ?
Can an anaerobic tea still be used after a year of sitting? Thanks for all of your good information!
The Korean Natural Farming folks claim that longer aging makes it even better.
Foliar feeding requires fine mist dispersal and should be done after morning dew has left, before it gets hot and foliage is mostly dry on top. Foliar feeding requires a reduction in concentration and some plants have specific frailties, such as poor wax protection.
Is your composting booklet still available? I just finished reading Compost Everything but would still like to read the booklet.
Thank you. The booklet is excerpted from the complete book.
I thought at night is when bacteria multiplies the most on wet leaves. Also with the pee point, how would you avoid small plant pots smelling like a urinal or does that not happen when outside?
Yeah. I would watch it with pots - better for gardens.
And yes, bacteria does multiply the most on wet leaves, but at the same time, it's the best time to foliar feed. I haven't had trouble because we don't generally have constantly wet conditions.
I wondering if adding a very small amount of surfactant would substantially help with the plants absorbing more of the foliar-fed nutrients due to increased contact.
I think so.
Humid acid
Great info. You should do a rapping video next. All the rappers will envy you. You are the real Pee Daddy MC
I may be mistaken on this, but since roots uptake all their nutrition from the soil, why can't we mix the soil with water to make our foliar feed without running out and buying fertilizers? I do see though that some natural products such as fish emulsion, seaweed, chicken manure, cow manure, etc. would possibly contain more elements than what is found in the soil the plant grows in. But I have used fertile soil I have gotten from under my trees that have dropped their fruit and leaves for years, and used that for foliar feeding. Additionally, natural soil contains enzymes and elements that are often missing in bagged or bottled fertilizer. Maybe a mixture would be good. Thank you for this video.
I keep shungite rocks in my watering can...seems to work well, have you tried it?
Dam.. Suge Knight has been dead for 6 years...you must have connections?
What about using liquid fish fertilizer to foliar feed? If so how often can I spray my young fruit trees? In South Florida with lots new tropical fruit trying to grow.
Diluted, my guess is every week or so.
@@davidthegood so normally this one calls for 1oz per gallon of water if just pouring it in. Cut it in half your world say and put it in a spray bottle?
I would go with the full oz. That's still unlikely to burn anything.
Make your own compost. Don't let anyone else give you their crap. : D
So how often would you apply an epsom salt spray?
Not very often - maybe monthly or so.
I've been foliar feeding with pricey soluble kelp powder using my watering can, but I see people saying that it should be a fine mist applied for the best results. I wonder if that means I should buy a proper mister/sprayer?
I just pour w a watering can
Dennis Young So glad I laid out the $15 for a sprayer. Makes life so much easier!!
Remind me to only eat the meat if I ever have dinner at your place.. hahaha. .just joking, I'll eat your piss lettuce. You got a farmer rap cd yet? If not you should make one. Aloha
what if you used a mixture of urine and epsom salts ? would the epsom salts "sterilize" or clean out the nutrients from the urine?
No, it works well. The Epsom salt add some good magnesium and sulphur.
So how long after the urine or more so the anaerobic slurry foliage feed are you comfortable harvesting and eating?
I would wait at least a week. I usually do not feed the gardens when they are anywhere near harvest.
What are your thoughts on OceanSolution?
Ashley Smith price is a bit salty. Ba dum tsss
Seaweed is a great fertilizer
Better yet go to a beach catch a lot of sand fleas and seaweed and you have natural fertilizer
Do you have experience in using urine that has been stored in bottles for several weeks then applied to plants latter is old urine worst than fresh urine.
There is a diesel fuel additive that is required now days and all it is is urea and water. . It comes in 2 gallon jugs looks like a good way to acquire urea easily for making foliar spray
It all seems to work fine. Stored or fresh.
@@davidthegood the Advance Ecological Agriculture company and RUclips channel say that crops and trees love urea. Even though they don't sale agricultural urea. I think that's pretty good recommendation for urine as a foliar spray or inground fertilizer
It took a turn there at the end didn't it
Golden showering the audience? That perspective O_o
Yeah...that camera angle felt a little odd with the spray approaching. lol
So much for my artistic shots...
No, it was a brilliant camera angle...all the more powerful, given the "Tarantino-esque" visceral audience response. I literally slid my desk chair back a bit as the watering can drew closer. That is good filmmaking.
I was actually wondering if there was going to be an "accidental" sprinkling on the camera lens. That would have been a massive troll.
I was wondering if the urine also acts as a pest deterrent? We used to have rabbits regularly in a section of the garden and since I've started letting my dogs out there to pee, we have seen zero rabbits and very few squirrels. I'd think that human urine would be even more scary??
Might be
The rabbits are afraid of your dog's. Our urine smells like there's after less than 12hrs. As a deer hunter we pee under our mock scrapes to bring the bucks 2 our scrapes
So miracle grow is just bottled up urine - interesting :)
Does urine repell racoons or deer as well?
I hunt and we pee under our mock scrapes to bring the deer to it. After 12hrs the urine smells the same. Put hair from a barber shop or dryer sheets around your garden
But if I drink a lot of beer can I still use my urine?
Yes
Can i foliar feed my dragon fruit
I am not sure. The leaves are very waxy.
Urine NPK is 10.1.4
I did what you did and my CORN Is Huge.. Can I put both Anaerobic and Aerobic teas together?
Fantastic. And sure, I don't see why not.
🍁🚿💚👍
Tried this and I learned: my plants love my piss, people don’t like to ask “what is in that cloudy spray bottle”, and it makes my clones not shrivel and die
Won't the smell stay and stink all day every day?
No, it dissipates in less than a day.
You are very wise bro,but I'm not pouring urine on my plants🤣
You're funny!!!
You use urine to fertilizer plants!? , URINE trouble pal !
don't knock over that jug in your house....
Mos REdrum lol
Yep, he peed on his plants... :)
Wrong Wrong Wrong. Of course you can foliar when ever you feel like it. But there are pores called "stomata" which open mostly in early morning so that the plant can absorb those nutrients. Most agree that is the best time to foliar feed for best results . Transpiration and exchange of carbon dioxide happens when the first light of day,,, just sayin.
Don’t you know plants love alcohol
🤢
