Beautiful presentation. The explanation of "mobile", "immobile" nutrients and how this affects the progression of the deficiency is the key for diagnosis. Missing almost everywhere else.
I've seen alot of comments stating that images should have been added. Though that would have been a plus I understood everything. I believe this video was for persons who already have some basic understanding of how the deficiency looks and just wanted to match them to the specific nutrient. Being a college student, I get overwhelmed with slideshow so the talking was refreshing to me. Creator, please ignore the negative comments.
Sir, this is by far one of the most comprehensive videos I have watched in this subject, and I watch from the ol' Cajun farmer (passed away now) to that fast talking Everest guy.
A lot of people here commenting on the lack of photos - not necessarily wrong - but this was indeed helpful. I'll agree that photos would be very helpful, or even better would be some real-world examples. I kept expecting him to pick up some of those plants on the table for reference, but they were hardly utilized.
extremely thorough & knowledgeable. just wish there were photos to accompany examples of the symptoms as you spoke. But, really quality info from a well spoken educator. Thank you!!!
Being new to hydroponics, this is a treasure of information. I did not know what was causing my lettuce to look sick but this explained it well.Thank you Ethan
Your video was exactly what I desperately needed. A million thank yous for your excellent explanations. Even I,a mere novice, can fully understand precisely what you mean. Top marks !!!
Part of the first step should be to check and adjust the PH of the water along with adding the nutrient if applicable. Certain nutrients lock out at different levels of PH. A well run hydroponic system's PH should fluctiate within the appropiate range so specific nutrients can be optimally absorbed. Just adding more of a specific nutrient can lock out other nutrients.
A note: These deficiency symptoms can also be caused by root invading (root knot) nematodes that interfere with the uptake of all essential elements. This is one reason to change the plants you grow to a new place each season. Besides planting a nematode resistant crop, when you pull out an old plant, be sure to get as much root material as you can find if the plant was infested. Do not put those roots directly into compost. One can reduce nematode populations in the soil by spreading the soil out to be exposed to the sun. I do this with the infested plants I pull out, too. I hang them on a south facing fence. In places with bad infestations, it may be best to bring in new soil and restrict planting of susceptible plants to large pots. Continue planting non susceptible plants in the soil and over time the nematode population in that area will decline.
As you were explaining about heat, Florida is a Hot State. Plants are use to this weather. I use Nitro when my plants start losing their Lust of Green. Water is a must in Florida. Whew! That was a lot of great info! And yes, it’s a bit wordy... and I agree that side pics/vids of different plants with the same condition would be very helpful. In addition, a link to get that chart from the university would be nice and telling us what foods or natural sources offer nutrients other than just magnesium and iron. If it helps to know, some people have a sensitivity to higher voice pitches... You might consider using a mic that adds more base to your voice! That said, I really appreciate this video. Thanks fir the hard working efforts to keep us better informed!!
It was a good summarised information, it clears almost all the queries about nutrient deficiency, It would be more useful if we could have look closer to the leaves
Hi Ethan, this is by far the best video I have seen on diagnosing a plants health and how to fix it. I am growing lettuce in my basement using aquaponics and it looks like I have a slight calcium deficiency which would make sense since I have poor airflow in my basement with no fan. I am going to set a fan up to see if it clears up. The only thing that doesn't add up is that the dead spots on the tips of the leaves seem to only appear on the tips of the old growth and not the new growth, which as an immobile nutrient should be the other way around right? What are you thoughts?
This was a very thorough video on deficiencies and very good explanations of them, which is more than most do in their videos. But one thing I have yet to see anywhere is a 'completely' thorough and very specific "show-and-tell". Just like if it were a study done at a University or a science project. Where if you have a few examples of a control crop with no deficiencies, a very healthy plant. Then you have a couple of the same type of crops of each deficiency, that were purposely insufficient or withdrawn from the feeding schedule. (e.g. one crop purposely given insufficient amounts of Nitrogen, another insufficient amounts of Mag, etc.) This way you would have a few examples that were very specific and apparent. Also, where some of the examples would have multiple deficiencies that are common together do to lock-out, such as a pH lock-out or other. I feel that video would easily get millions of views and become the "go-to" for everyone who has questions in the subject. Just sayin :)

Hey Rajin, Usually this is because of overwatering or not enough Calcium as a result of overwatering, I would try letting the plant dry more between waterings and use an all purpose fertilizer, if it is in hydroponics consider increasing the Calcium Nitrate dosage
Great Video! My theoretical knowledge of various deficiencies has greatly increased. However just by looking at a leaf, I don't think I will be able to diagnose the type of deficiencies. I wish you had shown several pictures as illustrations,

Hi there, thanks for the comment! Yes in UpStart University we have Nutrient Deficiency Key, which includes diagnosis and solutions for deficiencies in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. You can find if here university.upstartfarmers.com/product/nutrient-deficiency-key

my plants are showing yellowing o new growth and some necrosis. My guess is iron deficiency as this is immobile deficient and since they are outdoor not calcium because they get enough breeze. On the 3 immobile deficiencies you only mention 2 of them, iron, calcium, what is 3rd? Great vid. Subscribed...!
a lot of nutrient deficiencies occur because of water quality or environmental issues that limit the plants Glad you enjoyed it. It's possible that your plant is lacking the ability to uptake nutrients. You can download a nutrient deficiency key on UpStart University pages here- university.upstartfarmers.com/product/nutrient-deficiency-key
Awesome video! Bright Agrotech , Any information on ghost peppers?!?! I grow several types of chilis and have mastered growing habaneros out here in South Carolina but not so much the ghost. It gets 9 hours of full sun a day with 1.25 inch of water a week. Rain water so not from the tap.
I have a problem with sprinkled narcosis across my leaves and a few crispy edges. I don’t think it’s a lack of calcium, maybe a lil of potassium based on the symptoms you listed bc it’s mainly on the older leaves but you didn’t mention too much about (sprinkled/ blotchy) narcosis throughout the leaf
This is going to depend on the crop specifically, but in a lot of cases this type of Deficiency has more to do with airflow and VPD than the actual nutrients present. I would start by looking up our blog posts on VPD and RUclips videos and see if increasing airflow helps.
I looked on the university of Montana website and couldn't find it. There's a picture of one but when you click it a bunch of other stuff comes up. He should provide the link!
Great info thanks so much. Have privits hedges turning yellow, But there is alot of clay here. So it might be getting root rot from sandy clay, or not enough Nitrogen. Plants have been there for about 5 years now, but it's been 115 degrees out. I stopped watering in the day time now too. I am thinking I have been watering to much but will give them some Fish Food and see if it helps turn them back to dark green. I had another plant do the same thing and it died last year. Cut my watering time back to 20 minutes at night now too, instead of a hour of watering. We are just over the hill from the Mojave Desert, @ 3,000 foot elevation. Stuff don't like to grow here, But my parfianka - pomegranate Plants are doing very good here but I have learned they don't like the afternoon sun, so I put up shade boards on the west side of all of them and they are doing great now.
You know a lot and you explain it good, but I would love to see a ton of clips and pics to visualize what you say. You have heard about podcasts, this is the place where this 'video' should be found.
Beginning hydroponics problem not addressed here: my lettuce is growing too fast, elongated big leaves, stretched out and falling over stalks looks nothing like a “head of lettuce” and very frail. Wilts if I look at it wrong. However roots are very clean and quite robust both air and water. Outdoor NFT , with about 40 % direct sun shade via white overhead corrugated panels. My inexperienced guess is that ambient temperature is too high, usually high 70s, but decent air flow. Humidity runs about 52 %. I’m pretty sure my nutrient formulation per volume is correct but not positive. Will look for nutrient diagnostic key as mentioned, otherwise any advise would be great. Thank you.
We are specialists in truly vertical growing systems so NFT is not our forte. However, we would recommend you look into your VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit) to ensure the humidity and temperature is in range, and make sure there is enough aeration of the water and sufficient dissolved oxygen levels for nutrient transfer. If you want to try growing in towers instead we have lots of beginner references on our channel and our website for support. Towers with the Matrix Media system are a much more forgiving media and less risk of root rot. Hope this helps!
I have small aquaponic system which is meant for a bigger project coming up. well, my current system has about 14 Tilapia fish and has two grow beds (half blue barrel). I plant my seeds in the ground and when they're about 10Inch i take them to my grow bed, but they seems not growing so fast! my question here, where/what is the problem? Thanks a lot in advance

Stuff don't like to grow here, But my parfianka - pomegranate Plants are doing very good here but I have learned they don't like the afternoon sun, so I put up shade boards on the west side of all of them and they are doing great now.
Do you have and insight into vein narcrosis (green leaves with yellow veins) in a planted aquarium?
sorry aquarium plants are not really our specialty.
You know a lot and you explain it good, but I would love to see a ton of clips and pics to visualize what you say. You have heard about podcasts, this is the place where this 'video' should be found.
Thank you for your advice, we will consider it!
@@ZipGrowInc Yes it does, thank you.Towers are next!
