  • Scott Joplins and Arthur Marshall 1900 masterpiece, "Swipesy Cake Walk," on a rare piano roll from the original time period. This is one of a number of player piano rolls I recorded at the home of the late Trebor J. Tichenor in St. Louis, MO, May 23, 2012.

    Too fast! Also, sounds like an electric motor doing the pumping...

      Too fast? This is the tempo I perform it at, and the the tempo I've always heard it played at. Any slower and it's a funeral dirge. As far as I'm concerned, this is the perfect tempo for it.
      And before you say, "Joplin said to play ragtime slow", his ideal tempo for rags, his own included, was 100 BPM, which isn't necessarily slow in any regard.
