  • This is a long, but detailed, video on how to change the front brake rotors on a 1985 Toyota 22RE 2.4L 4x4 pickup. It includes 4x4 automatic locking hub and wheel-stud removal, as well as complete reassembly.

    THANK YOU!! I used this video to do the rotors on my 85’ Toyota pickup. Saved me $750 since I didn’t have to have a shop do it. Bought the rotors/pads & went at it with my pops. 8hrs later....haha had a few little issues like getting the axle retainer clip off. But made it work.

    Excellent video Bob, I'm a shade tree mechanic and your video more than likely saved me a couple hundred bucks doing my brake job myself instead of Midas or some other shop.

    Great video, Bob! Thank you for helping me figure out how the hub nut at 18 minutes works with the little #20 Torx screws. I have a 1984 with this type of hub but the 1984 service manual shows a lock nut instead. The big 54 mm nut at 18 minutes can be loosened/re-torqued using a 2 1/8 inch socket (I found one at Tractor Supply --it fits a little loose but works fine). My Toyota service manual specs the assembly torque at 600 kg-cm or 43 ft-lb or 59 N-m, Then loosen the nut until the hub can be turned by hand. Then using a spring tension gauge (fish weighing scale) attached to a lug bolt
    the hub should turn at 1 to 3.9 kg or 2.2 to 8.6 lb after re-torqueing the 54 mm nut.

    cheers mate excellent video. I'v done it once before but wanted a refresher. last time I broke a couple of heads off the little 8mm hub bolts because I recklessly used a rattle gun, so tip for others, undo them by hand or its a nightmare situation and you'll need to extract broken bolts from hubs

    great video,very imformative,not sure on greasing the wheel stud and locating disc bolts ,as wheel the rotor gets hot,it will spin off and possibly contaminate the the rotor disc pads.also recom.using lock tight on all bolts,but all in a great video,many thx m

      It is not hard. Just need to take your time.
      When doing something complex with lots of parts, clean off, (Sweep/mop) the floor prior to doing it. I lay out each part starting far away, moving close to me. You know like the car parts montage from every car movie ever. When i'm done, the closest pieces go on first, all the way to the last piece farther away.

    what's the dimension of those bolt circle for your brake rotor? 6"X5"? or 6"X5.5"? A friend says he has 6X5.5" but can't seem to find 6"X5.5" for his 91 toyota pickup anywhere. Any clue why he would have 6" X 5.5" instead of 6" X 5"?

    that doesn't look like an automatic locking hub. What's the difference in manual/locking?

    • @busabobsgarage9876
      @busabobsgarage9876  9 лет назад +1

      With manual locking hubs, you have to get out of the vehicle and turn the locker on the end of the hub. With automatic lockers, you do it inside the vehicle with a button or a lever.

    • @youmang
      @youmang 9 лет назад +2

      ha touche. I meant whats the difference inside the locker with automatic and manual. I can see how my question didn't make sense.

    • @bitsinmyblood
      @bitsinmyblood 8 лет назад

      +You Mang not much of a difference. I've got an 89 22re 4x4 and if you just follow the Chilton / Hayes or whatever it does a good job showing you the steps. The difference would be you have to take off the locking hub first, then the whole hub assembly and washers and locking nut and bearing and washer and bearing and washer locking nut. There's really only one way to do it if you look at it. This is my first time replacing rotors, calipers, and cv axles and it's pretty straightforward. The most difficult part is removing the cv axle. You have to unbolt the top mount and the lower mount on the whole hub assembly so you can manipulate it enough so it clears the mounting bolts and can be slipped out. I replaced the shocks while I did this, and I noticed that I had to release the top of the chock so the hub assembly can move freely which allows the cv axle to be removed. The most difficult part of this whole thing was breaking the (6) 17mm nuts off the cv's mounting bolts. It took some figuring out because even after using PB Blaster the nuts wouldn't break using two opposing wrenches. What DID work was getting a 3 inch extension on a pneumatic tool. It's difficult to fit in there, but its possible. You just thread to through the area between the brake line and the lower control arm. I'd been looking for a method to break these bolts, and the only thing I came up with was by using the opposing wrench method. If your nuts are rusted on like mine were, you need more torque and unless you've got a big breaking bar and the truck lifted on a shop lift then using my method would hopefully work. I plan to take a short video when I do the other side, so check my channel and I'll try to have it up in the next week or so. If you have any questions, feel free to message me.
