I have to say this is the greatest freaking video I've seen to date! I'm literally planning on doing this job for my FJ40 this weekend bc my axles are leaking all over my driveway (Car has sat for 6 years). Thank you for this.. I've subscribed. After I do the axles I gotta do the leaky transfer case next if you plan on doing another video ;)

I don't see a reference as to what combination of shims should go on above and below the knuckle when assembling the unit??

Hey I got the front 89 v6 calipers and the rotor does not sit square in the center between the pads of the caliper. Did I miss something? Are they floating calipers?
I have a 40 with what appears to be the exact same knuckles and brakes as you have here. I have literally commented on maybe 2 dozeon videos in 15 years on RUclips. This is an amazing video so I felt compelled to wrote something because I was rivited from start to finish. I literally tried doing this on my own a few years ago and it didnt come out that well because im leaking muck again. This give me way more confidence to give it another try! Thank you!!!
Thanks man I really appreciate the compliment and have faith in yourself the axles aren’t particularly difficult they just have a lot of pieces but once assembled they usually stay good for a very very long time just take it slow get a big bucket of grease and a lot of rags

Hi, great video, just got '97 Hilux with a solid front axle. With regard to the replacement rotors do you have a part number?
I don’t have a particular part number but I just used a standard rotor the rotor you’re looking for is from 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser a.k.a. FJ 40 I would personally recommend spending a little money and getting them stop tech front rotors They were very high-quality and don’t rust easy if your vehicle does a lot of sitting

Is there a noticeable difference with the 82 rotors and v6 calipers for a stock truck in terms of braking capability?

Bearings, do you just do it by hand? Or did you have a wrench on there? And also, is it ok to reuse all the gaskets and bearings if it’s all fairly new? Only reason is because I bent my housing so I need to swap all my stuff into another housing
Yes you can use the old parts “IF”they are good for sure no need to put new parts if what you have is ok also as far as tightening it I go by hand you can use a small inch pounds torque wrench and I believe it’s 8 inch pounds of load against the bearing but when you load it make sure you spin the hub then check it again this way it seats a bearing and you get an actual reading I do it by hand because I’ve done a lot of them. You really can’t overtighten them. Just make sure it spins nicely when you’re done.

It took me probably about 14 hours over 2 days, but I took my time, and mostly didn't mess anything up, well until I was trying to figure out why your spindle looked different from mine after I got it bolted back on. As I was thinking about it, I tripped over the brake covering that I forgot to put on. I have one more of these to do, an 88 FJ-62, and while I'll wait a bit before tackling that one, I'm happy to have this one in my rear view. Thanks again.

awesome videos rebuilt my 1980 Toyota first gen pickup axle off of this video with my marlin chromoly 30 spline conversion shaft and birfs. only additional information i needed was torque specifications and clarification on what grease to use. just waiting on new felt plates because i left my nephew bent mine because my dumbass thought the marlin kit came with them too lol.... 50$ mistake oh well. fyi for anyone using a different kit the felt backing plate is unique to the low range kit he used in the video i learned the hard way
Great video with some great tips. Your mechanical skill & experience is really evident. Love the up close perspective too. Spent the money on the Trail Gear hub stud-nut-cone washer kit and was pretty disappointed because one stud was junk. That new rubber seal on the back side of the knuckle typically has a lip that has an orientation btw. That looks like just a flat piece of rubber. OEM axle seals ( Toyota 90310-35010) are what I’ve had the most success with. Great optional parts tips too. I’d also suggest using a grease with moly content per Toyo’s specs. Valvoline Palladium is a great low cost grease that meets the spec. Just my .02 which you may find overpriced.

Thank you for doing this! My FJ80 has been leaking diff oil from the axle seal for a while now and now I know what to order and do. Here's hoping my cv is good! Hell I might just replace it too preemptively just in case. There's been no grease for years most likely!
Thanks dude I appreciate it and yeah the axles do wash out and kill the CV but you’d be surprised how resilient they are if it’s not clicking when you turn it’s probably reusable

To begin, love your clip on knuckle rebuild/rotor install. It’s the most direct info clip I’ve seen. I have a 1974 fj40. Bought it new, had over 400k miles on it and it sat for 20yrs. Im replacing the 6 with a sbc. I want to put disc brakes up front and out back. I noticed in your clip the knuckle has the caliper brkts part of the knuckle housing. Trail-gear has the bearing etc. kit. Im assuming they offer a caliper brkt .?? Does the rotor and caliper you mention in the clip fit on my application, provided I can find a caliper brkt. Regarding the inner n outer rotor/spindle bearings, they’re not in the bearing kit we see in the beginning of the clip, so That’s a purchase made when getting the rotors, correct. I've had my Marlin Crawler rebuild kit sitting in my garage for almost eight months now. I have a guy in town who would do it, but he's slammed. My wife's not to keen on me paying someone for labor, and that's how I arrived at this video. You make it look easy. Hopefully I can get this done in time to do some wheeling this summer in my 85 4Runner. Your video is hands down the best I've seen on this topic. Thank you for taking the time.

Quick question! The metal retaining ring in the back of the knuckle wiper seal, does it overlap where the ring splits or should it sit flush? Mine overlaps and im not feeling great about it.
Sorry for the late reply but it’s supposed to sit flush you may have some crap stuck in the groove where it supposed to sit it needs every bit of it to sit flat in there

Brake caliper is a direct fit but you have to trim the backing plate. What is the backing plate?

I have a 2nd gen sr5 4runner. It came with 4 pot front calipers. If any one knows, how do I retain the calipers when doing a SAS? I've gotten a mixed bag of results when researching this. I have TG 6 shooters if that makes a difference. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

you can get a hilux 2005+ and do a video of this quality cleaning the all the egr... i have trie my self but the camera fail and i wont do it again.. :) many d4d diesel motors "fails" after 300k kilometers .. more if those km are done in the city..
Great video, one suggestion I’d like to mention is packing the felt with grease. It’s makes it a bastard to bolt together, but helps repel water from the knuckle, rather than the felt being a sponge sucking water in. 🤙🏻

To put the axles in its actually a bit tricky the axle cv is cut with a flat spot on one side and then on the adjacent side it has the same flat cut both those cuts have to be lined up with the upper and lower taper bearings “ball joints” and when you put it in you angle the axle stub up hold on to that then start the axle shaft in the axle tube then when you get to the point where you’re ready to slide the CV into the knuckle turn it until those flat spots line up with the taper bearings and jiggle it around sometimes it a literally pop right in other times you will be jiggling it for 30 minutes I don’t know the magic between the two ...but don’t stop jiggling

How pedantic should you be about removing all the old grease from the cv ? like sit it in a bath of degreaser and then repack it?

Need to drain the diff' and put some fresh 90 weight in it. Then some Grey Goose never hurts.
Is that amount of greese enough or do u have to add more? And can i add oil or greese after i have put evrything together
Yes you can add Grease after everything is together there is a fill plug on the knuckle to grease the Burr fields

Is this going in a CJ2, 3, 5? I'm doing the same thing in a CJ3 and had to modify the housing quite a bit to get it to work. I see you outboarded the springs...nice thinking

19:09 Does that paper gasket go before the backing plate or after the backing plate before seal ring?
you should have one for both the one that goes before has 3 flat sides (left, right, and bottom)
Ever thought of adding speed sensor or is it impossible?
It’s almost impossible but I “think” it can be done using fj80 axles with tone rings and cut a hole in the knuckle for the sensor but I never tried
