Whitney Houston: 1980's Vocal Runs & Melisma

- Long before Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and the tons of upcoming female singers in today's pop music, it was Whitney Houston who popularized vocal acrobatics, runs, melisma and influenced all these divas. I included a few examples from the 1980's and I hope you enjoy this video featuring the woman known as "The Voice".
Invitation to fans of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce Knowles, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Jessie J, Jennifer Hudson, So Hyang, Regine Velasquez, etc.
She will be forever an icon 😭❤️❤️
Also, if you get a moment, take a listen to " Where You Are." At the end of that song , Whitney sings a 14 or 15 note run. It let me know that she could do runs but didn't want to run it in the ground ( nothings wrong with runs as long as they don't affect affect the soul or the story of the song).
Yes!!!!❤ Love me some 80’s Whitney!!!
The queen of melisma. The Voice. A legendary genius of a singer. Musical trailblazer. I could say more but I’ll stop here. 🥲
Incredible vocalist, magical stuff. But I just have to mention one thing, it's probably true that Whitney popularized melismas, but that was in the West. But in the East (more specifically the Middle East) for example, this style is rooted in their culture (Have a listen to Ofra Haza and Um Kulthum), and it's just part of their identity. It's heartwarming that people took this style to the West because it is really beautiful.
Awww a Mariah fan disliked the video. Lol Guess what, I created this video “because” of a clueless Mariah Carey fan saying that Mariah taught Whitney how to sing with melisma when in reality it was the opposite. Whitney was not only a powerful belter she also had some of the best vocal runs and vocal agility in music. Whitney is the true iconic vocalist who changed the industry for singers, Mariah only followed in her footsteps.
You promote your channel from them
I agree. Whitney is the greatest
Whitney Rules!
Mariah said in an interview that non of them (including her Mariah) would sound thesame if whitney did not put out a record
Why would that person (Mariah Carey fan) dislike Whitney? I love both and I'm fan of both.
Ugh I love that performance of SAMFLY, it always stuns me because of how beautiful her head voice was there
@@gr__msk Off the top of my head I don’t really know about the highest bc there’s probably some obscure videos out there but just winging it I think it’s G/G#5. In studio she has sustained and phrased G’s throughout the song love will save the day and live there’s the Iam Changing G5’s. She has higher belts that are even phrased but idk if they’re sustained
Cali 1987 I think? It's the same one where she performed Just the Lonely Talking Again/Never Too Much, whatever that concert was
@@SerafiniAGaunt Yes, a legendary concert 🤩☺️
Difícil existir alguém assim viu, meu Deus . O Senhor é perfeito mesmo... Como ela dizia, ela era a voz.
Well unfortunately for Mariah fans, she HERSELF has admitted in later years that she too, was influenced by Whitney. 😌🤷🏾♂️
She said in the early 2000’s too
Modern computers were influenced by old computers. Doesn't make the old computers better. Not to call Whitney a dusty old thing. The point is Mariah surpassed her in runs, but Whitney is clearly better in some other areas such as powerful belting and tone, stage presence/live performance.
Whitney is better. The only reason there was a competition between her and Mariah is because of you colorist racist people who get SICK everytime a non yellow woman gets praise.
@@user-hv7cj3yb7u no wonder y’all want mariah to have the runs because if you are surpassed in “tone” as a singer that’s all you’ve got and i’m sorry for you. whitney remains incomparable
Miss you Whitney
There really shouldn't be room for petty beefs. All of these ladies are supremely talented and uniquely creative and created. Why can't we enjoy them as such without comparing and competing? Each singer should stand on his/ her merits. I can love Whitney and Mariah and Patty and Aretha and Lisa Fisher and Martha Wash. See how that works? If we can learn to love each performer we can access more good music, that we may not have been privileged to enjoy previously. "Imagine" what a positive impact that would have on our real world interactions with others. 🤔🧐👀

3 dislikes from a Mariah fan
Why would Mariah fans dislike a video of someone doing vocal runs....? 💀 so what, every dislike from a video with Beyonce, Jasmine Sullivan, Brandy, etc, doing vocal runs is a Mariah fan too? 💀

Its Whitney Houston he has never failed me yet but its indeed the snipped
What song is at 1.18 minute? Thank you
Aretha Franklin brought riffs, runs and melisma to pop... Not Whitney.
Not true because Aretha was soul/r&b and not pop. Aretha did try her luck with pop in the late 80's after Whitney's success and wasn't that successful at it...
쓰긴했지만 아주한정적
Sorry your wrong bro. Stop hating it ain't cute
Mais whitney trouxe para outro nível
@@whfan007 r&b soul was the pop music of the 60s and 70s. Aretha was scoring hits on the hot 100 charts. She popularized it long before Whitney. You can even argue Sam Cooke as well
Whitney wasn't part of Mariah's sole inspirers
She was. Mariah said it in a dozen interviews after Whitney's passing. Tommy forbid her to say it early on in her career because she was going to be Whitney's rival. But later on as years went by and she became established in her own right Mariah said so many times that Whitney inspired I lost count.
@@whfan007 she said that to impress the public
