You killed this topic better than anyone I've ever seen talk about the subject. I'm elated your gave that paper example it was absolutely perfect... I was podcasting back in 2005 and I tried explaining codecs back then just as you did and I didn't do it the same justice that you just provided. I absolutely love your explanation, I will definitely use this to explain to folks in future. Also your story about the Paintball company was magnificent. Anyway you won me over I'm gonna subscribe and check out your info superb job. - bendrix
Thanks JOSH! Very useful I'm starting with FCP after months on iMovie and your short & efficient video did the work. I'll export all of my files in H.264 ;)
Thanks for the very clear explanation. Working with Premiere Pro from a Fujifilm X-T3, I need everything in ProRes or Premiere basically collapses into a heap on the floor and gives up. My solution is to record to an Atomos Ninja V. Loving the flog files it produces, and they're waaay easier to work with in Premiere.
thanks this helped a lot. was trying to decide what codec to ai upscale with in video enhance ai but i have to put it into premire afterwards since the ai won't process the audio.
Great video, I knew most of the information but this helps me explain to other people what is the difference. One question, if I want my editor to edit but I want to color the file, could he export in ProRes 422 and send to me? Would that be enough information for me to color edit? Thanks for the help
Great explanation Josh, thanks! I'm new to ProRes, but since my R6 10-bit 4:2:2 H.265 footage is EATING my computer alive, I've began researching ProRes as an intermediary codec, i.e. I'm converting my files before I import into Premiere. Question: what's better to use, the ProRes 422 LT, or the HQ version. Does it make much difference to the quality? Also, would you suggest using ProRes as an intermediary codec, or using proxies in my case?
FYI, RUclips accepts ProRes. Fun fact, every single time it's time to upload to RUclips, I say "lemme upload a prores 422", get impatient with the upload time, then get an H264 and throw it onto RUclips. In theory, uploading a prores to RUclips will be better (one less compression round) but I've never actually have been patient enough to upload a prores.
My first several RUclips videos were all ProRes because I didn't understand codecs. It took SO LONG to upload videos and it was exhausting. I'm glad I understand the use of H.264 now 🙏🏾 Also, I uploaded the same clip to test the difference between ProRes and H.264 on RUclips and couldn't tell a difference.
Relearning Prores again and this makes sense! Quick question on your video editing process.. Do you create proxies for your Prores files when editing in premier pro?
If I am often importing sections of older videos I have produced into new edits (b-roll etc) - would there would be a noticeable quality difference between a high bitrate H264 export and a PRORES one? 90% of the time I am only exporting videos for social media platforms / RUclips.
Very good explanation buddy! P.S. When you started to use the analogy for the paper, I though you were going to say something about printing in color using good quality of paper versus regular paper for text print out. hahahaha :)
I wonder if the bit rate and file size slowed down playback on their end so they lowered the bitrate two a single digit in their compression? It would have been rad if the editor sent you his export settings to show you what happened.
I just subscribed. I love making videos and I use Corel VSP 2020 AS MY EDITOR. My camera does shoot in h264 What program would you recommend buying unless there's a free version to convert my video to Prores ? Basically so it's easier editing in my computer. Thanks Keith
Thank you for your explanation Josh, my question, if possible. If I shoot and have mp4 and H.264. Should I render it as H.264 for RUclips or it is better to render as DNxHR and upload it on RUclips as mov DNxHR HQ. 5 min clip takes only 10 min to upload. Will I have better quality? It looks like I loose quality on the post if I work with H.264 and render it as H.264 on RUclips. Thanks
thanks a lot man! I've been exporting my selected scenes in h.264 and then importing them into ae and expoting them again and i had no idea why the quality was going down untill now.
I came here with a question in mind. If the same video in prores and h.264 is made with similar bitrates, what's the difference? I didn't get an answer.
Thanks for the great explanation! So, what happens if I put h.264 avc stock footage in my video and then export it as h.264? Will that lower the quality of the stock footage?
Great explanation! Fyi though, youtube does accept all prores files these days
Thank you! Your real life story especially helped me decide how I should deliver, I love this entire channel

That paper example helped out so much!!!
Awesome Olufemii, You explained so simple without a lot of bs!!!! Thank you for the class.
Love this Josh. Consider talking about IPB and ALL-I codecs sometime in the future 👍
Hands down, the best explanation of the ProRes vs h.264 on RUclips! Thumbs up!
The way you explained that.....made it simple and easy to digest. Thank you.
OMG, you made this topic so easy to understand that I finally got it 🥳🥳🥳🥳 Thank you 🙏🏻
This really helped clear up the differences of these Codecs for me, thank you!

Straight and to the point. Bravo! Thank you for that valuable information.
As others have said, you've explained this so well I think anyone could understand.
Thank you for the great and tangible explanation!
Excellent explanation of ProRes vs. H264/H265 types of compression Josh. Thank you.
Thanks JOSH! Very useful I'm starting with FCP after months on iMovie and your short & efficient video did the work. I'll export all of my files in H.264 ;)

Exactly its realy easy to edit now in premiere with prores 422 hq
Holy Moly, great explanation, thanks so much!
Thank you man, now it's clear
That was super helpful & answered all my questions thanks!

Amazing! Helped me so much! Thank you ;)
Thank you so much!
Thanks fo the infor. Helps alot
Excellent video. Thank you for this.
This was helpful. Didn't realize the compression would be compounded by repeat deliveries in H.264.
What an awesome explanation. First timer on your channel
Thanks for this!
I so much like the crumpling paper analogy.
The more compress the file (more your crumple the paper) the less data it retain.
Great content. Your are a very natural learner and it shows you have a lot of experience.
Great explanation. Thanks!
WELL EXPLAINED, THANKS
This is a great explanation. Thank you.
GonzalezJio hey thanks Gonzalez!

This is literally perfect as I’m receiving my pocket 4K today!
ChatmanDidiT awesome Chat! Congrats on the 4k coming in!
Super helpful, thank you :) I was tyring to figure out the difference between both Codecs side by side und couldn't see a difference :D
thanks this helped a lot.

It’s worth it
I used to upload ProRes 4444 to RUclips. Looked great
dang you teaching me so much thank you fam
Relearning Prores again and this makes sense! Quick question on your video editing process..
Do you create proxies for your Prores files when editing in premier pro?
Thanks that was helpful
Excellent explanation well done sir

Thanks for your videos!
Can you compare ProRes and DNxHD codecs as intermediates, please?
Your Awesome DUDE
Thank you for sharing. 👍👌
My Aerial Videos thanks for watching
I wonder if the bit rate and file size slowed down playback on their end so they lowered the bitrate two a single digit in their compression? It would have been rad if the editor sent you his export settings to show you what happened.
Hey Josh hope all is well, quick question. If you shoot stock footage what format do you export that as to sell or share it online
When transcode my file through prores I notice the colors darken
I just subscribed.

thanks a lot man! I've been exporting my selected scenes in h.264 and then importing them into ae and expoting them again and i had no idea why the quality was going down untill now.
This is great information. A lot of times professors just tell you either h.264 or pick the preset on premiere / your editing software.
I came here with a question in mind. If the same video in prores and h.264 is made with similar bitrates, what's the difference? I didn't get an answer.
So I should try to record and edit in ProRes, but export in H264? I’m gonna need an external recorder I think!
Thanks for the great explanation! So, what happens if I put h.264 avc stock footage in my video and then export it as h.264? Will that lower the quality of the stock footage?
In premiere, which codec you like to use to edit smoother? thx.
well taught
