    The unique luminance factor was really insightful. Also appreciated the realistic example of the green screen rather than having eight wildly different pixels in the pallet.

    Very well presented !
    Now what I'm wondering, is on my Lumix S5 IIX, after deeper comparison of REC formats/codecs, I noticed the 4:2:2 formats used the H.264 codec, while the 4:2:0 used H.265 . At same bitrate of c.
    Thus, would there be yet another benefit in such case, to prefer 4:2:0 over 4:2:2 , regarding the overall quality of the footage, considering the better codec efficiency ? As long as the 4:2:2 added chroma info isn't needed for specific use cases (but even regarding that, if the quality is higher at same bitrate, it could also help with auto detouring etc?)
    Thanks

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  5 месяцев назад +1

      You ask a very intelligent and nuanced question. As you hinted at the end of your question, I think it really depends on use case. If you are keying anything out or doing any kind of more intense color grading beyond a simple LUT, I would go with the 4:2:2. If the 4:2:0 yields smaller file sizes and is easier to edit and you don't need to do too much with the colors in post, then totally go that route. I know certain computers and editing platforms handle H.265 and H.264 differently. If you haven't noticed a problem with the H.265 and it is smaller and easier to work with, go for it. There's no point in recording more if you aren't going to use it. To me, it all comes down to use case and post production workflow. Hope that helps. Thanks again for asking.

    I'm trying to figure out why Moonlight streaming looks so much better than Parsec, and I think this may be it. Its a night and day difference even on SDR content, (HDR doesn't even work in Parsec) Parsec looks dull with greyish blacks, running parsec seems to reduce the quality of my entire display client and host, while moonlight seems to enhance it. It also appears 4:4:4 will greatly increase the bandwidth requirements.

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  7 месяцев назад

      Hmm... very interesting. I don't have experience in those, so I can't say for certain, but you may be onto something.

    • @kyledupont7711
      @kyledupont7711 7 месяцев назад

      @@ginger_dog I have noticed something else, certain types of games look amazing in parsec, and most other games look washed out, blacks are not really black... I just find it odd that the display is radically different when streaming depending on what you are streaming. It seems games that have less colors look really good, and games with complicated color palettes look like crap

    • @kyledupont7711
      @kyledupont7711 7 месяцев назад

      @@ginger_dog what I'm getting at, is I believe the color palette makes a huge difference. In Resident Evil 3, when I switched to the rec 709 color palette, it looks considerably better. Perhaps there is some windows level setting I can alter the display output with. I have attempted to upgrade my parsec account to 444. I'm having technical issues on that front if I do get that working, I will let you know if that was in fact the issue

    What's the difference, in video, between chroma and luma?

    • @ginger_dog

      Luma has to do with the luminance or the lightness/darkness (the gray scale, if you will) of the color. Chroma is the color information itself.

    Let me ask you, when I'm rendering animations to put back into Premiere Pro. Should I do ProRess 422 or ProRes 422 LT?

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  7 месяцев назад +1

      Well, obviously the LT version is going to be slightly lower quality but save you a lot on file size. If your end video is going on social media or RUclips, the LT version probably makes the most sense. If you are scaling way into the animation, keying out the background of tiny shapes, or distributing on Netflix or theaters, then go with the 422. 89 cases out of 100, the LT is probably going to be more than enough.

    • @johnalmighty
      @johnalmighty 7 месяцев назад

      @@ginger_dog Ok, thank you for this. I will stick to 422 then, as I am rotoscoping and doing intense animation zooms. The end result is for social media but my animations are no longer than 10 seconds at most.

    • @ginger_dog

      @@johnalmighty You could always experiment on the most extreme example and see if you notice a difference. Identify the file size difference and pixel peep as much as you possibly can and see what is more worthwhile to do.
