    You absolutely can change your voice, in fact, you must.
    Speaking for radio or a podcast is a lot like public speaking. You need to emphasize the positive aspects of your voice while downplaying the negative.
    You also need to enunciate, to the point where you feel it's almost ridiculous.

    • @Radiodotco
      @Radiodotco  4 года назад +2

      Good advice for those looking to sound professional, it's best to practice to find that sweet spot where you sound great, but aren't wrecking your throat.

    The standard these days seems to be dynamic microphones like the RE20 or the Shure SM7B. They require more gain than a condenser but are less sensitive; which is a plus if your recording space is noisy or doesn't have proper treatment.
    Also, VST plugin processing can be applied to your mic instead of hardware which is cheaper, saves physical space in studio and allows you to create your own unique FX chain. For example you could use a VST processor like Nomad Factory's BusDriver compressor followed up with some light EQ and a VST Noise Gate.

    Condenser mics pick up room noise big time...unlike dynamics. I hear room echo in your voice for example as you are using that TLM105. IOW: ENVIRONMENT is also KEY to mic choice.

    I will say just one thing. What you should focus on is not the gear. First step is to train your voice and speech paterns. I have spent over eight monts now actively training my voice. I can speak four times longer without breathing than I did those 8 mnths ago. I have a way more consistent and controled voice than I had. I got rid of parasitic frequencies which plagued my voice. A great microphone doesn't realy matter if you sound like s**t when recording. I have worked with a bunch of micrpohones. SM48, SM57, SM7B and AT2020 are few of my most used microphones. However I worked on awful vocals on a Neumann u87 a microphone more expensive than my car and I also shot live streams for some of the worlds largest media companies with audio from my 200 dollar phone. Yes gear does matter. I can't deny that. But it is not even in the top five in terms of what's important. Do you want to know whats important? Story, character, skill, drill, setting, and perseverance.

    Nice video. All three of the mics you show are condenser mics. You’re listeners should be aware of dynamic mics as well. The dynamics are much preferred by most talk shows in the US as they need no phantom power and pickup far less background noise. The Electrovoice RE20 or RE320 are good examples.

    • @Radiodotco
      @Radiodotco  4 года назад +3

      Good point, but most professional radio stations have sound-treated rooms, so they use condenser mics. But if dynamic mics are your thing, then check out: ruclips.net/video/AMlHug1kLxs/видео.html

    • @nickvalley461
      @nickvalley461 4 года назад +1

      Radio.co not in the US: Virtually all sports talk show stations here use dynamics. I do think condensers are best for music or singing

    • @thereasoniswhatever5068
      @thereasoniswhatever5068 2 года назад

      @@nickvalley461 the use of condenser mics has nothing to do with denying byckground noise. If you had for example sm7b and at2020 next to each other and spoke into them at the same time, they would have pretty mouch the same amount of background noise. However they are harder to clip. And that means that you can get them closer to your mouth and compress the sound. That is the deal with sports. show me a sports commentator who doesn't scream at times.

    People are saying use a dynamic mic at home. Sure. But I say have both. A dynamic is a pain in how close you need it to get decent levels without excessive gain. But if you have background noise, then use the dynamic, yes. But a condenser gives you levels better, and has that sparkle for spoken word.

    I tried too be a radio dj, BUT it didn't work out, The guy I talk too at a defunct radio station in Flagstaff,AZ he said my voice was just too deep, very bland & monotone!! In fact I notice my voiced changed when I was 13 and I hated my deep, monotone voice. One guy told me and he said too me you should be a Radio DJ, but you have too straighten out your vocal cords it takes a lot of practice and time. It wasn't easy! Radio DJ jobs are extinct as of today!!

    Your audience = second person, not first person. ;)
    First person is the one who is talking, the locutor: "I" (first person singular) or "We" (first person plural).
    Second person is the one we talk to, the interlocutor: "you" (formal English doesn't make the distinction between singular and plural here), "youse", "y'all", "you guys", "youse guys" (plural, informal)
    Third person is the person who isn't there: "he", "she", "one", "it" (third person singular), "they" (third person plural).
    There you go!

  • @badmiddens

    There is no TLM 105. You are using a TLM 103. Also, 95 percent of actual radio stations worldwide use dynamic microphones, not condensers. You folks are selling silliness to silly people.

    • @Radiodotco
      @Radiodotco  5 лет назад +1

      Correct, the microphone is a TLM 103, so that's a mistake on our part. A lot of radio stations do use dynamic microphones as they're good for focussing on the presenter's voice, but professional stations like BBC Radio 1 and Capital FM use condenser mics as they're useful for live music sets. Even Howard Stern has been known to use the TML103 and U87 for a lot of his shows. For more awesome mics, check out: radio.co/blog/5-best-microphones-radio-podcasting

    Telling someone you cant change your voice which is many muscles and control is like telling them you cant change your body and put it in the shape you want and need.
    Terrible.
    Yes you can change your voice this is basicaly all voice acting, singing, podcasting and radio is about, there are techniques in the larynx, diaphragm control soft palate control and so on, that deep radio voice is trained, naturaly or not that singing or rapping voice is trained. This guide is terrible and focuses on the extra, the superficial, gear effects, cheap advices etc. Telling someone you cant change your voice which consists of many muscles and control is like telling them you cant change your body and put it in the shape you need.

    • @Radiodotco
      @Radiodotco  3 года назад

      Hi there. While all that is true, like bodybuilding or physical exercise, the training needed to learn the techniques you're talking about is hard work that takes time.
      This video was meant for beginners and gives some easy first steps they can take to improve how they sound on air without straining themselves.
      Saying people can't change their voice was meant more to say that most people do not have the trained skills to manipulate the timbre of their voice. Apologies if the definitive nature of that statement sounded dismissive.
      All that being said, this video definitely isn't our best, if you check out our more recent content you should find it's of a much higher quality.

    • @Radiodotco
      @Radiodotco  2 года назад

      Wasn't meant to be an offence take. But the idea is, stations have codes of conduct for presenters. As in, the way they talk and what they can say. For instance, on most BBC stations in the UK presenters have to pronounce clearly. Whereas on independent stations like Radio X (another UK stations), then can get away with slang and slurring words as that's what the audience expects.
