Henry, that last image was definitely worth it!!! Stunning……absolutely superb❣️
Many thanks!
This is a very useful information. THANKS
Beautiful photo you have inspired me to start using the focus shift on my Canon R5.
That second shot is a stunner!!!! Absolutely love it!!!
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Great watch…thank you. Haven’t really mastered focus stacking yet but will keep going..probably compositional issues and not the focus stacking itself!
That final mage was utterly delightful. I'd have been well pleased with it, myself!! :-)
Great shots Henry - the last one was a stunner! For anybody wondering why you set for 20 shots but ended up with 6-9 for focus stack, the camera will stop taking images once the focus reaches infinity. So you might set it for 20, but it reached infinity around 9; at least that’s the way my R5 works. Using it for macro is different in that 20 shots may not be enough - it is dependent on your aperture and the focus increment you set. On the Canon the focus increment has no relation to an actual length - it is a number from 1 (narrow) to 10 (wide) and the camera calculates the actual focus movement based on aperture at time of shooting; higher aperture values increase the focus shift amount, smaller reduces it. The tricky part of using the system is figuring out the increment to set. Mostly trial and error from what I’ve found.
Thanks a lot Terrance. I neglected to mention this and you’re spot on. 🙏🏼👍🏼
Agree with your assessment, Terrance. Because of the trial-and-error factor, I've abandoned focus-shift shooting on my Nikon D780 DSLR, and simply use touch-focus in Live View when I want to focus-shift-shoot a landscape; it's much simpler and faster, at least for me.
Stunning 😍
Thank you! 😊
That warm side light was amazing! Really brought out the rich colours in the rocks and heathers. Beautiful Henry!
Henry I love your enthusiasm you always seem to be upbeat uplifting to watch you thanks for sharing
I think that final image worked out really well. You got all the hills and crags poking just above the horizon, not always the easiest thing to do when your in a mad rush and chasing the light!
That last shot was great -- not to slight the previous one! Location, light, composition, color.... what's not to like? Outstanding!
Wonderful video Henry. That last shot is calendar worthy in my opinion! The wonderful golden light on the rocks in the foreground and mid ground is spot on!
It’s so funny that you see that last shot like an ok shot 😂 I wish we had that kind of vistas in Belgium. Here it’s all flat. That last photo is the best, with that beautiful light 😍
Good use of Focus Shift Shooting and excellent results. In order to save further time in fleeting light moments, add the Focus Shift Shooting to My Menu. Do this with all the features you use then they are all available in My Menu instead of you trying to remember what is in what menu. My Menu then becomes your personalised One Stop Shop of the Z7 features that you use.
If you.add it as the top item you can then access it directly using one of the function buttons 👍
Great advice, Keith - thanks a lot 🙏🏼👍🏼
Some beautiful scenery and images. Appreciate your videos. Thanks. 😊
Number 2 is definitely great. Love everything about it. And you're right about having to be ready at a moments notice. No time to fiddle with the manual.
The camera app on my phone will do focus bracketing and do the stacking as well. I really should learn to use it more.
I think that focus shift is a great innovation, and thinking how far things have come from my Yashica Minister-D rangefinder camera of half a century ago, I can only shake my head in wonder. I just wish manufacturers could agree on what to call it! Fujifilm calls it "focus bracketing." And please don't think your skills are lacking in any way, Henry. Every week you gift us with images that have a distinctive style and send me reaching for descriptors like warm, mellow, and gorgeous, as well as awesome and spectacular.
Brilliant once again Henry that last one was well worth the effort it was superb 👏 however both were 👌👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Love ya channel Henry, down to earth, real world, out-in-the field trials and tribulations we all get to experience.
I can't imagine that last image without the light, you nailed a banger mate, congratulations and worthy for a book or calendar. Thanks for another adventure and keep up the great work!
I have used this feature on my Panasonic Lumix G9 a few times. Lumix calls it Post Focus and it is a really handy tool that can be used to same time and get shots quicker and with less frustration. Thank you for sharing and reminding me about this feature. I need to use it more often!
Thanks I have lumix s5 and wasn’t sure if bracketing was the same will try post focus many thanks
Great tips, and that last image was GORGEOUS!! Checking my camera's menu now....
Loved that last image Henry.
I am confused - using hyperfocal on 24mm at F11 you would have got everything from 90cm to infinity in focus without stacking?
That's awesome you are using that now. It has been in my I menu since I set my Z6ii up. I really need to use it.
Oh Henry, what a class act you are, great shooting.
Thanks a lot David
Focus stacking is the digital equivalent to what Group F 64 (Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, etc.) were doing to create the sharpest depth of field---Some times they would have to wait hours for the wind to stop for several seconds to take a landscape photograph.
Beautiful golden light on the last shot, Henry. Just wondered how focus stacking would have worked, especially on the first shot, if a breeze had been blowing the ferns. Thanks, Henry, for another great video.
Thanks Henry! Having watched your video, I've just spotted this function on my camera 🙏
Great video Henry, and very timely. I have tried playing with Focus shift at home doing some macro shots and it works fine, but every time I try it when out on a shoot, it won't work. It just says that conditions are not right. I'm not sure if it's because I'm doing long exposure shots or what, I will have another play at home and see. Anyhow, both great shots, and now I must sort this issue out!! BTW, if any Henry followers read this and have any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong, please shout. I'm shooting in aperture priority mode, sometimes manual. I'm back in the Lakes in November, and really looking forward to it!!
My original D850 ( which is big and heavy ~ but must admit I miss) had focus stacking which was really useful. On the Z7's they call it as you say focus shift ~ again very useful for landscape and especially macro. Good topic to bring up ✅
Beautiful compositions Henry. Thank you. That's exactly the kind of photography I enjoy looking at most .
I'd rate this video 9/10....but the Blue Jay hat immediately boosts it one more point to 10/10!
That closing shot was amazing! You now have me more anxious than ever for the new Z I’m saving for. I look forward to using the focus shift feature out in the mountains of west Texas.
That is a really helpful topic and as I just took delivery of a Z7II, very timely. More of the same please. 👍👏
It’s always nice to learn something new Henry, every days a school day as they say, loved the last shot!
My new camera has that feature too, but I haven't used it yet. I think Canon calls it focus bracketing. I have great plans to try out many of the features that are new to me. As you said, we pay a lot of money for these cameras, might as well use what they give us.
Need to check my camera for the aforesaid feature. Good shooting again Henry👍😀
Stunning shots Henry. Love the last one.
It is exciting to learn a new skill and to see how it adds to your photography adventure. Henry, keep traveling, I'm enjoying the journey!
You definitely nailed it with the final image Henry, simply stunning capture and loved the first image too. It’s a great feature to have on the camera and I’m sure you use it regularly now you have put the feature to use. A great episode this week and love seeing the heather in bloom
Great explanation - I've used focus-stacking a few times; but I'd certainly use it a lot more with a camera that makes it so much easier. Really enjoy your videos.
I recently upgraded to a d850 and this was one feature I was looking forward to having.
I have the Nikon D850 and it does an amazing job of focus shifting. As you show us focus shifting is way faster than doing it manually. The issue I have is when photoshop blends the images. Sometimes it does a good job and occasionally it fails badly, which is disappointing for a premium software. The last shot is top drawer. 👍
Thanks Henry, really useful function, I found it on my Fuji XT3 and it’s called Focus Bracketing. Will give it a go next outing. As alway great content and pics. Baz
Thanks Henry a great video on Focus Stacking. I am certainly going to give this a try on my Nikon D850. Thank you for sharing😊
Thanks Henry for sharing this information & great results....the location certainly helped your comments as I have never tried focus stacking...I will check if it can be done on my DSLR.... cheers from Australia 😀
Great shots, will have to try this, know I have it never used it
I'm enjoying the focus bracketing in my Canon R7 and it will compile them in camera. I've mostly used it for bugs but I'm interested in trying it for landscape.
I find automated focus stacking much more useful for macros than for landscapes. For macro, you're so close to the subject that depth of field is next to nothing even at the smallest useable apertures. So 20 or 30 images might only cover a few inches, taking just a few seconds. OTOH I only need five images at most for just about any landscape at F/11 to F/14, which I could very quickly via touch AF on the LCD.
Forgot to say that the camera will stop once it’s captured all the focal points it needs - generally seems to be about 6-9 shots with my settings and depending on the scene of course! ☺️
@@HenryTurnerphoto with Canon, the actual number of shots depend on both the farthest distance the camera can detect and the focus interval distance you set, on a scale of 1-10. What those intervals mean in terms of actual distance, I've no idea. It likely depends on the depth of the actual scene. The last time I shot a close-up this way, I set for 20 exposures. I got all 20 but only the first 10 were useable, which was enough. Keep playing with it.
Well worth the trip I’d say. Great light on that mid ground hill
Very interesting video Henry,
You captured some really nice image's as usual.
Great shots here Henry. Hope you're well.
Great video (as always)! Image #2 for the win! Thanks for sharing.
It's good to know that event such an experienced and skilled photography as you can still discover sth new and isn't afraid to admit it. Photos as usual great. The final one outstanding.
Great video, I am going to have to try focus shift shooting. You sure make that 24-200 work. So many others complain about that lens.
Love your enthusiasm mate and the Canadian team cap! Your photography is awesome!
What a great hobby. We are lucky to enjoy photography. Great photos. Thanks, I do Astrophotography and Square Space may work for me.
I gave this a try a few months back with the 24-200 on the Z7 and yes this makes the 24-200 for Landscape an even more justifiable purchase, can you follow it up with your manual blending process, I'm guessing you don't auto stack if printing.. great shots, would like to see some large prints of these...
I use it all the time for macro on my Fuji x-t3 but never considered it for landscape. Weird little self imposed mind limitation. So thanks for this video!
Great video and shot at the end. You make an excellent point about being able to set up your gear fast or you could miss the shot. But this is exactly why I don’t use a tripod or bother with focus stacking. Because when the light changes fast sometimes I’ll see a better composition or one that adds to the story and I can move and shoot quickly. If for some reason I do need a tripod I’ll use my pack, tree or a rock to steady my camera. This is what’s great about photography we can all have our own unique style.
Henry. I very much enjoy your videos and admire your level of ambition and experience. You bring a great deal of insight to photography and some fun humor to boot.
Thank you for your efforts, your sharing of these videos, and certainly for your time.
Each of these makes my photography that much better..
Thanks Timothy that’s proper nice if you mate. I appreciate your support🙏🏼
Another great video! I don't think i have focus shift on my old D750 but it looks really useful.
Absolutely amazing Henry!! I am still shooting with my D7200 and hoping to capture half of what you capture. I so much look forward to coming home from work and getting a little solitude from your videos. Keep up the great work you are inspiring so many from your adventures. Thanks again for keeping it real and helping inspired photographers everywhere. Wish you could teach a class here.

Hi Henry, you can also do it on your Olympus omd em1 kii. You have bracketing and focus stacking available for some of the pro lenses.
As far as I know it works with all m43 lenses. And you also get twice as much depth of field as the crop factor is two.
It's a great feature that I often use for landscape and macro images. Good video and the shot was brilliant.
By eck that's stunning is that. Tha should be reet proud lad :-)
Hi Henry. That`s quite a clever little feature on the camera, not sure if my camera has it, if it does I`ll give it a try. Two nice photographs by the way. Looking forward to your next adventure mate.🙂
Such a cool feature of the Nikon this auto-focus stack, wish Sony would include this next time. Great video as always.
Blimey mate, at this rate you're going to have to upgrade your RAM or buy a new Mac to blend all these large files together 😋.
Superb vlog as ever. 👍
Stunning final image.
The final image is a winner
You keep inspiring. Lovely last shot! Would love to try and chase that side light soon!
Henry you star! I had no idea my D780 could do this. I know what I'm going to try out this weekend 🙂 Love the images btw.
Great video. But I don't understand how you can get a pin-sharp fern on the top of a mountain using such slow shutter speeds. Over on our side of the pond, we've got this thing called "wind."
Absolutely love the final image Henry, must give it a try on my z7ii
Awesome video as always Henry, thank you 😊 I have hesitated to use the automatic focus shifting on my R6, mainly because there were a couple of things I didn’t quite understand, but they’ve now been addressed by your video, so I’m a happy bunny. Still procrastinating about my web site though 🤣🤣
Great video. The final image looks fab, well done!
Great tip Henry! I'll see if my camera can do this too! 😀
You do know at the end of your video, there is a picture of you and a caption saying “click here to subscribe” but the font you’ve used all I see is “ dick here to subscribe “. Great video, and good message, three is in point in spending loads on a camera full of features and then not using them if they make life so much quicker and easier.
Absolutely beautiful images Henry !
Cheers Richie 👍🏼👍🏼
@@HenryTurnerphoto Welcome Henry. Can I pick your brain 🧠 about something?
Watching this as Im watching the Blue Jays game here in Canada. Cheers!
Both images are stunning! The focus shift shooting sounds like a very useful tool, sadly my D7100 doesn't have this feature!
Last photo is amazing 👍. You took up to 20 shots in focus stack but used 6 - 9. Does the stacking overlay focus area a lot i.e could you set it to say 6 in first place?
Forgot to say that the camera will stop once it’s captured all the focal points it needs - generally seems to be about 6-9 shots with my settings and depending on the scene of course! ☺️
My Canon R5 will stop taking shots when the focus reaches infinity so you will generally not get 20 shots. It’s a different matter if using the function for macro photography where 20 shots may not be enough.
How many steps can you set? I was just thinking that with enough steps you could make a short video clip with a rack-focus effect, shifting from foreground to background over a second or so.
Thanks Henry just about to trade in my D500 for the Z7 cheers for the focus stacking trick (always used manual method too)
Thank you. 👍📷😎
Hi Henry, this sounds a great tool to use to save having to do it the manual way. I can't find the option though on my Canon 5Dmk4 so is this just a Nikon thing?
Wow that final image was stunning, does anyone know what the Canon equivalent of Focus Shift Shooting is called so I can see if my camera has this facility?
Yep. Was one of the first things I used on my D850.
Never knew cameras could do this automatically, great feature! But mine doesn't have it. D'oh!
I find myself torn with focus stacking in general, having to sort stuff out in RAW first, copy the settings to all the frames and then send them "over the wall" to focus stack in PS. It generally works well of course, but I'm always uneasy stepping away from RAW until I'm happy with the results.
Henry this is wonderful your shots are spot on. Thank you for enlightening me to this I will check and see if my canon has it. Using this did it stack in camera and output as single or so you still need photoshop for the stacking
Thanks Mark, still need to stack in post 👍🏼👍🏼
Interesting, I will check but I think my cameras are too oid for that feature
Works well for you 📷👍
Very beautiful picture's
I use focus bracketing on my Olympus, but I only use 4 or 8 shots, 20 seems overkill except for macro work or if you are using f2 or somesuch. Also, many exposures increase the chance of picking up movement in the frame (20 x 1/8 = 2.5s minimum, probably closer to 3... whereas 4 x 1/8 = 0.5s).
But both shots were nice, although I actually preferred the first one by the tarn.
Forgot to say that the camera will stop once it’s captured all the focal points it needs - generally seems to be about 6-9 shots with my settings and depending on the scene of course! ☺️
@@HenryTurnerphoto Oh, that's clever. I don't think the Olympus does that, it just uses the number you dial in. But I haven't tried it with a high number, time for an experiment!
Great shot!! Thank you.
Nice shot Henry, you nailed it !! Now that you know about the focus shift feature, have you checked out the “Focus Peaking” feature ?? I use that often as well. Keep the great videos coming !!
Yep, not used that one either!
