  • Lisa Gade reviews the Intel NUC 10 model 10i7FNH Frost Canyon mini PC that fits in the palm of a hand. It has an Intel 10th gen Comet Lake 6-core i7-10710U 25 watt CPU with Intel UHD graphics. You can get it bare bones (you supply the RAM, M.2 SSD and HDD) or a turn-key model like our FNHA with Windows 10 Home, 16GB DDR4 dual channel SODIMM RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD and a 1TB SATA3 HDD. It may be incredibly small, but it packs a lot of ports, including Thunderbolt 3, USB-A and USB-C 3.2, HDMI 2.0a, 3.5mm audio and a UHS-II full size SD card slot. It can drive up to 3 4K monitors at 60Hz.

    Got it. Mostly using it for programming and some occasional music production, but it seems to even handle some less intensive games. Going to upgrade the cooling to a fanless Akasa Turing FX case soon. Seen some benchmarks telling it runs 20 grades celsius cooler and more importantly, without noise.

      @@jesus2621 Not sure about guarantee. But the 3-year warranty is stellar. We install thousands a year. Failure rate is extremely low. I'd say less than 1%. When they do fail, it's a painless swap for an in warranty exchange. Can't say the same for HP or Dell with basic free warranties. That's tremendous value IMHO.

Seriously, it's extremely rare to find someone to listen to that a) knows their stuff, and b) knows their stuff AND understands their stuff. Very spot on.

    Too expensive for what you get. You're paying a huge premium for the form factor. This is a very niche product with specific use cases.
    Also just to comment on the video, this little PC can edit 4k video just fine in Adobe Premiere, it's 4k video in Adobe After Effects that it will choke on. You really need an 8 core 16 thread count at the minimum for that and even then it won't be a completely smooth experience.

    • @RWDtech
      @RWDtech 4 года назад +1

      The i3 and i5 NUC's are really the only ones worth buying, and even those are relatively pricey. If you need i7 horsepower, just buy an ITX or Mico ATX form factor from Dell, HP, etc for much cheaper. If you NEED the power, you shouldn't be that concerned about mini form factor, plus you'd typically want to pair an i7 with a dedicated GPU.

  • @Theking196
    @Theking196 4 года назад +13

    Honestly, when you factor in a keyboard, mouse, speakers and a decent 1080p ips screen, you're looking at 1,200-1300$ and it's not portable. Most laptops in that price range are pretty good, and they're portable 30$ dongle will get you all the ports. Also for 950-1000$ you could literally build a desktop with a ryzen 5 3600 and a 5700 xt or 2060.

    • @NickCharles
      @NickCharles 4 года назад +1

      The i7 desktop models are never a good deal. i5 barebones kits are the sweet spot, IMO.

    • @Theking196
      @Theking196 4 года назад +1

      Fullmental yea but is it a better value than building your own mini pc? given that this thing is using integrated graphics, you could easily build a 500$ PC with 16GB 3200 RAM, 1TB M.2 NVMe 3rd gen, and an i5

    • @NickCharles
      @NickCharles 4 года назад +2

      @@Theking196 the draw here is in power efficiency and form factor. No matter what you do, you are not sourcing parts off the shelf to make a PC in a 4"x4" form factor that idles at 3w including psu overhead. You can't buy U series processors either.
      If that's not for you, then don't worry about it and buy something mini-itx instead. Personally, I use an 8th gen i5 NUC next to my TV as a Plex server. I used to have a giant tower PC but I got sick of looking at it and hearing it all the time.

    I'm really thinking about this for my mum's home office. She doesn't have any space because the physical area is small, and she's still old fashioned with papers everywhere, a printer and a separate scanner (I know lol, but its functional for her so I won't intrude), but her little Dell Mini ITX is 10 years old and slow. This seems perfect for her to do emails, excel and word, but mainly because its so space efficient.

      Get her an i3 or i5 NUC, its more than enough for her purpose. Don't get the 6-core NUC. 6 cores will generate more heat and more fan noise. NUCs only have one single fan inside to cool things off. And all versions of 8th gen NUCs come with Iris 655 plus graphics which can drive three 4k monitors.

  • @RamonOchoaMusic

    I use NUC's on a daily basis at work and home. Very useful little machines for the various Sys Admin tasks I throw at them. The home model is one from 2015 and the fan is starting to go, it's quite noisy. I also use the Dell Optiplex Micro-Form Factors as well. Each has it's own strengths. The base (not Skull Canyon) NUC's are smaller in foot print but they get noisy when running a bunch of applications or VM's. They also favor HDMI over Display Port but the one Lisa reviewed has Thunderbolt 3 so that's not a deal breaker. I will tell you one model to avoid if you want to expand. The Acer Veriton due to the m.2 SSD screw to hold in place being upside down. You have to disassemble the entire thing just to get to that and void the warranty in the process.

      AMD's new Ryzen 4 laptop chips would make killer mini PCs that could be smaller than the A300. Especially with Vega 11 or better graphics.
      3rd gen Ryzen APUs were not as much of a bump over 2200g & 2400g. Maybe 4th gen desktop APUs will be a drastic upgrade to make another A300 with?
      Either way, mini PC future with AMD looks awesome compared to Intel.

It's not a bad gaming PC for older AAA titles and Retro Gaming. My only disappointment with Intel NUC 10 Mini's is none of the current 10th gen i7 6 core processors come with Intel Irus Plus graphics. You are limited to UHD Graphics where the performance is mediocre. I am very interested in the Intel NUC 9 Extreme with i9 processor and fitted with a RTX 2070 graphics card. good review, but im noting a lot of the reviews of these mini form factors miss out on detailed noise/heat reviewing - after all, you pick the small form factor in exchange for ... what? For me, I wanted a nice little system I could leave on, in the house because I dont have either a rack in a cool room or a tower PC I want to leave on 24/365. I dont want to game on this, I want to home server.

      I have been using those tiny PCs for general purpose machines in the last few years. They are nice and lovely, just make sure you're getting what you need and in a decent price. Too much and it is wasted with a higher electricity bill. Too little and it is, well... useless.
      Use these as pfSense routers, parents desktop, and I'm even contemplating getting one for myself.

    I don’t mind if it’s 60% taller if they could fit a more powerful graphic card in it.
    I recently built a micro atx PC to replace my full tower old PC, love the smaller size of the new PC.
    I want my next PC to be even smaller but with the same power of a larger PC, if that’s possible.

    I like the idea of these but really want a PC with a small form factor that doesn't kill gaming options without spending an arm and a leg. If I understood you properly, to get this "kitted" out will still run over $900 but won't even run games at a decent quality? I'd have to pass on something like this.

      @Alestro NUCs come with low power U-series CPU, how much gaming you expect to do with it ? If anyone plans to buy thunderbolt eGPU enclosure and a graphics card to use with NUC its really pointless. You can get a really good gaming rig less than the cost of NUC+eGPU+Graphics card combined.
