This month we're breaking down another classic track off of the Down Nola record with Lifer!
As I mention in the video, I first learned this song over 20 years ago, so it was really fun to dive back in and learn it again.
Lifer is played in the key of C# Minor and uses the C# Natural Minor {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7} and C# Blues {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7} scales.

Eeeyyy friend! You should know the Argentine band ,LOS ANTIGUOS songs likes "hecho a mi medida" ....;)
good lord that’s the most beautiful les paul i’ve ever seen
Thanks. I feel that way too.
fr lain
Old Gibsons are hard to beat
It's fukin cool
Learned this whole album on guitar as a beginner. Made playing so damn fun
Good call!
One of the best debut albums from any band. Lifer is such a killer song, definitely one of my favourites of NOLA.
One of the greatest albums of all time imo. 🤘🏻⚜️
@@DoesItDoom I can't argue with that
I will go as far to say the best debut ever.
I remember hearing this song almost 20 years ago and being blown away.
Same. The entire album.
I bought it when it came out, almost 30 years ago. Time flies.
@AndyMoore-t3s The more I think about it. It was closer to thirty years for me too. I was in college in 1996, Heard it then, I guess I didn't learn a lot of good math there, haha
I've rocked this album on the PA in my basement to the point of blurring my vision and creating a breeze. Then moved to the other end of my basement to sit in a chair to take pulls off a bottle of beam for the rest of the album. Probably my favorite metal album of all time.
This is the song that got me interested in a host of sludge metal bands. Also, glad to see the subscribers count growing on this channel!
This is definitely one of the albums that got me into the entire genre. Thanks so much.
Today is my birthday and first time wearing my Does It Doom? Iommic Life Complete shirt as I go vinyl shopping with the people responsible for turning me on to Sabbath. Love the shirt!
Disgustingly, gnarly and wicked tone here Steve!
Happy Birthday! Pickup some good vinyl!
@@DoesItDoom@DoesItDoom I did! Including two from High on Fire, a band that you turned me onto recently!
@@IDGAF_PLUSsome of the best shit ever. 🤘🏻
That's the video that I've been waiting for. So many great riffs on that album.
The best. Enjoy!
This is always been of my “warm up” songs before jamming. Covers a lot of basics in guitar basics
🤘🤘thank you for shout out brotha!
Thanks for the inspiration!
I saw DOWN at The Palace in Hollywood when NOLA first came out. Stood right in front of the barricade the entire set. Then Kirk Windstein literally reached his hand out to me to give me his guitar pick. I still have his pick along with my other collection of rockstar picks.
Outstanding … it’s coool to hear all the nuance w/ the riffs isolated. Long live DOWN!
that is the most beautiful les paul ever geewizz man
Thanks dude. I have to agree. Aged to perfection.
How fortuitous, I listened to NOLA earlier today for the first time is in a looong while. Then this pops up.
Perfect timing. ⚜️🤘🏻
Killer lesson Steve from in my opinion Down's greatest work. That record has a magic they never recaptured.
Nola is just such a masterpiece. Hard to ever do that twice.
@@DoesItDoom 💯
The Walpugis cranked up gives a pretty good Down like tone too imo 🤘
Have to give that a try!
That custom is fucking rad
Dude, it’s unreal!
Over the under has some really bad ass songs as well, my favorite album to listen to all the way through.
Yeah dude. I love Over The Under, too. Listened to that record nonstop for months when it dropped.
I play this song virtually every time I pick up a guitar, still had to watch for the tone and cover anyways!
Thanks for watching!
Man, i used to jam to a ton of these songs with my buddies is his parents basement theyre just fuckin good and a bad ass band thanks for this!!
Yes! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you! Gonna give thisnone a run with my Bower Power pedal. 🤘
Enjoy!
As others have said, that Les Paul is awesome.
Ahhhhh! I had to pull the trigger. What a glorious tone! Hey Steve, Jason from Sheavy. Just ordered one of the last 3 Bower Power ODs! Looking forward to putting it through its paces 🤘
It rules, dude! Let me know what you think. I think you’re gonna love it.
Love the Witchpit callout. That band is so cool.
Yes!
Nice one Steve. Been a while, i was getting worried about you!
Awsome tone from that set up. Cool song, great lesson.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful!!! You nailed it brother!🤘
Thanks, Shane!
Would of liked to have seen the 2nd guitar part that comes just before the outro (lead part) great video none the less.
Thanks for watching.
What an incredible surprise on a Friday! I got my Baghdad, bower power and a Les Paul in C# let's goooooooooooo
YES!! I want to hear it, send clips.
@DoesItDoom I logged outta IG for a break. Will definitely share some eventually. Those lil fills and pentatonic things these guys do are such a signature thing to the sound. So much tasty stuff going on.
Classic song? This will be fun to check out. Thank you!
Enjoy brother!
Superb lesson, as per the usual Steve!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks, Chris!
Yeah great lesson Steve, you're so good dude
Thanks for watching, Lynton! Appreciate it man.
Great to see another Down song on your channel. Awesome and thanks ❤
About time. ⚜️🤘🏻
Great lesson! Could you do a video of how to play “Seer” by Witch?
That one has been requested often. We tabbed it out on Patreon on guitar and bass: www.patreon.com/posts/witch-seer-bass-58352805?Link&
I can’t f@€king wait to get home and play this!🤯 #mindblown
Enjoy! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you for the lesson...🤘
Hope it was helpful. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Hell yeah man thats one of my favorite albums right there. May have to cover this song soon.
Classic.
10/10 Album!
Down's debut is like OG Sabbath its that good absolute masterpiece.
I'd have to agree.
@@DoesItDoom it's got a special place in my heart cause Down was my first ever club show and it was awesome.
Muchas gracias amigo!! Salud desde Galicia
Would love you to make a video about your black Matamp!
It’s a GT1. Will do it.
@@DoesItDoom awesome, can't wait to watch it!
Hey man, can you start doing demos for your pedals with less high end gear? Many of the pedals were based on the amps you play with etc. We could hear more out of the pedals with different/less expensive/gear to get a full idea of the sound. Thanks!
SUCH A GREAT SONG.LONG LIVE THE NOLA SOUND👹
One of the very best.
Don't know if you've done one yet but how about a Ironman(the band) video.
Dudes tone was unique
Classic
🤘🏻⚜️
Awesome lesson, thank you! Could you please do Death Row by Pentagram next? :)
That would be a fun one.
Do you think you could maybe take a look at Methdrinker’s bass tone? Probably one of the best sludge bands to date and they don’t really get talked about too much. I can’t really find anything about their rig online. Mainly just trial and error with live videos to try and figure out their rigs.
Has Jimmy seen this yet?
Cheers for the lesson Steve, just listened to some down today and came here looking for something to learn. Are Down always in C#? I was thinking of learning lysergik funeral procession too
Lots of C# Std and some Drop B.
@DoesItDoom thanks Steve!
Awesome
Thanks for watching.
are you running the Bower Power into the Baghdad? sounds great BTW
Yes. Bower Power > Baghdad > Carvin power amp.
Can you do a lesson for Black Sunday by Mephistofeles?
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you dig the lesson!
Do you modify your guitars to better fit those 12 gauge strings?
Generally the nut slots need to be cut wider to accommodate the thicker strings. Otherwise it’s basic setup stuff: action, intonnation, neck relief.
@@DoesItDoom thanks for the tip i've been having issue with going thicker on my little Ibanez gax 😅
@@kenny6920what’s the issue?
@@DoesItDoom just that the 12 gauges dont want to fit well on the nut or tuners its an entry level guitar so its understandable that its an issue
Yeah, sometimes you need to drill out the tuning pegs as well, although usually not for a 56 gauge.
What's the best Doom guitar pick? Standard Jazz iii?
dope
Thanks for watching.
@@DoesItDoom thanks to you bro
can you make a video about the song leech by full blown aids? i know the band name is goofy, it's a seth putnam side project, but this is a serious request, full blown aids has some awesome sludgy riffs
That made me laugh. Do me a favor and drop it on the official request list. Thats where I keep track of all the lesson request. doesitdoom.com/requests
Hell Yeah🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🔥🔥🔥
Glad you dig it. Thanks for watching!
Tag for the Witchpit dude's covers?
Added both to the description. instagram.com/reel/C84mvS5Ptka/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Any budget pedal recommendations for Down tone?
Ibanez Tube screamer or Boss SD-1 into a medium gain tube amp.
Where can I find the down covers that inspired this video?
Links in description. @Witchpitofficial on Instagram.

Desert island (with electricity) guitar and AMP?
A Woodbine Custom Shop Warlord and a Gen 1 Model T or Matamp GT120 (as long as I get a pedalboard with it).
Running the bagdad in front or fx loop?
Directly into a Carvin power amp.
@DoesItDoom id love to hear the Baghdad through a orange sc100
maaaaan how did you get that LP? i been looking for a 3 PU one for so long
I’ve been patiently watching and waiting. It is a long story but I got a great deal. 100% original.
@@DoesItDoom wowwwww i’m trying my damndest to find a 3pu les paul any suggestions?
@@missinforecordsltdI just watch Reverb constantly. Pay attention to the listings and figure out if seller has a store outside of Reverb (website, instagram, etc). Can always get a better deal if you go direct. Also watch for listings that are many months old with little action.
I remember seeing Down In Norfolk VA in 2007. I got a chance to meet Phil and he was so f’n cool. I told him NOLA sounds like the metal album Robert E Lee would’ve written. He said “brother that’s a compliment I’ll never forget! Thank you!”
And this pairing is why gordon ramsay gave the chefs kiss!
He said this. I took it as a compliment: ruclips.net/video/RvtKS5zyvnY/видео.html

if you wanna go for uber cavern tone just go and listen to some doomed death of Mortiferum...
You better have learned all the penatonic shapes kids!
Would love to see you tackle the Boss Katana. Stuck in an apartment so I picked up a Gen 3 and I've got some crazy tones going in the tone studio, even out of the box it's great. Sounds and behaves pretty organically, I've got it close to my old Rocker 30
