    Excellent video! I’m lucky enough to catch a Thameslink train between my local station (Crofton Park) and Blackfriars for work every day. I still remember the good old days of the class 319s, I loved them. I loved the traction motor but what I enjoyed most was when it was dark outside and there were no announcements. You just had to take a gamble as to where you were getting off! 😂 However, I do think the 700s are a great change. They’re cleaner, more modern and more spacious for wheelchair and buggy users, or people with lots of luggage. What I like most though is the announcements and information screens. They’re just so modern and helpful! Anyways, I’ll think I’ll stop talking now. Thank you for the information!

      Thanks very much for your comment Callum, enjoyed reading that! I've heard a few similar stories about the 319s, fondly remembered but fraught with danger 😂I do like the 700s - I put together a feature on the different Desiro City units (still on the channel if you want to watch) and did some further investigation on them - I was surprised to find a lot of people were not huge fans of them, so your words of praise for them are very welcome and it's good to know I'm not alone in thinking that they're not so bad! Thanks for watching and best wishes to you 👍

    The station that opened on 29th may 1990 was actually called St Pauls Thameslink, but the London Fire Brigade objected as if they were called to a fire at St Pauls station they wouldn't know whether to go to the Thameslink or the tube station. Or that's what I overhead on the opening day when they were doing an inspection. It's almost on the site of Snow Hill station.
    Also most of the stock used on the line had bad reliability. I have been stuck behind both the stock introduced after the 319s.
    The routes in early days also included Woking!

    #5 - To an extent we can say that the limited Southern service from Watford Junction to East Croydon also crosses London. I know the video says "city" and the Southern service goes through Zone2 only via Kensington Olympia and Shepherds Bush but I would still count that as a suburban service crossing London.

    • @ymodnar

      @@ymodnar only one TPH is quite limited though, not great at all. Now compare that with the frequency on Thameslink services where none of the branches sees less than 2TPH, most have 4 or even more at peak times, with dozens of TPH going through the core tunnel. Aside from frequency the last few trains of the night and first few in the day don't run into/from Croydon, and after 9PM they don't stop at Wembley. It is quite limited for a suburban service crossing through the city.

    Great list! did you happen to find out two things I've always been curious about: 1) why in the Thameslink 2000 program they didn't make a grade-separated junction just south of Blackfriars - seems crazy to keep the flat junction, which must cause delays on Thameslink to be pushed on to the whole south-east rail network. 2) why they didn't make Blackfriars a 'double island-platform' design (with four through lines - London Bridge S-bound + Elephant & Castle S-bound; LB N-bound + E&C N-bound) - which would have been the standard mainland Europe approach. If you've found out a genuine railway-operational reason for not doing so, it would be interesting to know - or even just that they wanted to, but were prevented by the money people!

    • @traintakes
      @traintakes  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Rick! I actually looked into both of those points when looking into Blackfriars and even called their publicity team to see if they could provide further info - nobody got back to me in the end despite a few chasers. The only conceivable thing I can deduce is cost and complexity in relation to construction along on the Thames. If I ever get an answer I may update this video in future or produce a new one taking a more in-depth look at Blackfriars and it’s history!

    • @ricktownend9144
      @ricktownend9144 3 года назад +1

      @@traintakes Very many thanks for your reply - I was beginning to think that I was the only person bothered by these issues! There has been no comment on it (as far as I can remember) even in Modern Railways or Rail magazines. I've subscribed to your channel and will be very interested if you ever do get direct answers. My own view is that it would not necessarily have cost more overall to build a single-track flyover on the LB>BF line, if the chance had been taken to extend the Thameslink tracks above the SE 'Cannon St to LB' lines and then crossing above LB station SE platforms (giving interchanges by short stairs/lifts, rather than the present long ones) before descending between the SC main line (to NewX Gate) tracks. This would have saved constructing the new Borough Market bridge and the Bermondsey dive-under, and would have given an optimal situation at Blackfriars - saving delays (and so money) on future operations.

    • @traintakes

      @@ricktownend9144 Thanks again Rick and thanks very much for subscribing, really appreciate it! I hadn’t even though about the prospect of the Bermondsey dive-under and the Borough bridge - I’m no accountant or engineer but those sound like good solutions that you’ve outlined! thamescantlink is a royal pain in the ar5e.
    May 2018 saw me loose my daily hat 1st class seat and 35 mins journey into london.
    It was replaced with the ironing board express and a journey time of at least 1 hr.
    Thanks to these changes, I and may others lost over 1000 minutes of our life’s in delays (may 2018 to the start of lock down 1) due to the idiotic incompetent management and its ability to run a train anywhere near on time. Some days i actually cycled house to office (53 miles) faster than thamestink.
    Having traveled the world, by train I NEVER want to use Thameswillneverlink again.
    Interesting article btw.

    The only big mistake they made with the new trains: 2 doors per car is not enough, the distance between them is just way too long.
    3 doors per car would be much better (like the crossrail trains)
