    One issue with extending the services further out from the existing termini is that the class 345 trains were designed for relatively short distance suburban services. Reading is already a stretch, but it gets away with it because most people travelling from Reading to London are likely to use GWR services rather than spending an hour on a stopping service just to get to Paddington - but if the trains were intended to replace existing services for through passengers then you would want to rethink things like the seating layout and lack of toilets.

    • @traintakes
      @traintakes  Год назад +3

      Very true. One option potentially is to not run through services for the entirety of the route from East/West and instead have trains terminate before they reach the very end of the rest of the termini.

      @@traintakes I notice in the current timetable that most services from the Shenfield leg still only go as far as Paddington. I think this is due to change soon, whereas the Abbey Wood branch now sees regular through trains to both Heathrow Terminal stations (4&5, via 2&3) and to Reading and Maidenhead.

    • @janeknight3597
      @janeknight3597 Год назад +1

      Ah this explains why it does not go out to Didcot. I always assumed it was timetabling. While GWR have the stupid restrictions between 16:30 and 19:30 for travellers leaving London the Purple Train is really important.

    • @traintakes

      Hi Daniel! Yep that’s right, they do - an Elizabeth line extension in the same direction would likely be a stopping service - it also just means that passengers doing a longer distance wouldn’t need to change trains if they wanted to, say, go beyond Liverpool Street etc. Nothing set in stone yet but the infrastructure wouldn’t take long to implement. Who knows!

    • @traintakes

      So apparently there was a bidding process and MTR did bid for the renewal, but they decided to go in a different direction.
      This article explains in more detail - www.cityam.com/chinese-owned-mtr-loses-elizabeth-line-contract/
      Quite interesting - MTR obviously had a lot significant milestones with the project, but it seems to be down to operational performance and the west wanting to rely less on China.

  • @markomarten
    @markomarten Год назад +1

    It’s a shame there’s no USB charging points on these trains and the lack of Wi-Fi is an issue. Didn’t anyone think about the amount of folk with mobile phones and that they might by chance be using the service. The trains are not bad but not a great design. There seems to be an element of cost cutting in their design and the thought that went into them is lacking. The seats are not comfortable and I personally would prefer to stand. The GWR units that run to Paddington from Reading are better. I have in the past stood from London to Newcastle on a packed train and would prefer that instead of the Elizabeth line trains, whoever built them didn’t use them or have a clue. We deserve better.

    • @peeper2070
      @peeper2070 Год назад +2

      Not sure what you mean by this. WiFi is always going to be poor if you’re using a public service a hundred others are trying to access at the same time, maybe a phone addiction symptom on your part there but I’m not going to probe further. Seats are far better than any of the tube lines, stand then. If you deserve better then pay more taxes.

    • @markomarten
      @markomarten Год назад

      @@peeper2070 With modern life we are often advised to go to a website for extra information, travel is a classic example. Some train companies have a limited Wi-Fi you can register to use, basic but it works. With Crossrail/ The Elizabeth Line there’s been a substantial amount of money spent. I cannot say how many people have a mobile phone but it’s a good few million in the uk, yet they get overlooked which is a shame. If you are currently on a train it is nice to know if you need to change to a different carriage to allow for shorter platforms or which one to be in for the best departure and to help avoid longer delays than necessary. I think the trains were bought on the cheap as it were and as there’s no policy to have charging points for a phone or even the inclusion of toilets they were not included. A mobile phone can be handy but it should not become a distraction when out and about. If it’s possible I try to find a decent seat but they aren’t always comfortable and some are worse than others, the ones on GWR are a prime example.

    • @_JohnDoe
      @_JohnDoe Год назад

      @@markomarten, a 4G or 5G connection is far more secure and stable; why be so keen on Wi-Fi? As for USB ports, they are being added, although, in my view, they should have added power sockets instead, as those are universal as well as more secure.
