      Yeah it does weird me out that nurses are expected to wear their scrubs home at the end of the day. I’m a research scientist and it would be crazy of me to wear my lab coat home at the end of the day. And I don’t even work with pathogens or blood right now.

    • @fabulousporcupine3828
      @fabulousporcupine3828 5 месяцев назад +22

      Yeah, it could get dirty on the way to work, and the workplace wants to ensure the hygienic standard. Also in Sweden we are not allowed to wear anything below our elbows. And hair must be tied back if it’s long. No nail polish, jewellery etc. ETA I have never seen anyone put their top into their pants either but idk what the rules are.

    • @AAK_47
      @AAK_47 5 месяцев назад +9

      I’m from Sweden and as a kid I remember when I felt unwell and had to get picked up from school early. It would take a while for my mother to show up because she couldn’t just leave and had to put on regular clothes before she left, even if she had to go back to work.

  • @LaLunaNur

    They provide them in Germany and I think the reason is hygiene, you get the scrubs at the beginning of your shift in the hospital and leave them in the hospital, also everyone in your ward wears the same ones

    • @pickles7168
      @pickles7168 5 месяцев назад +32

      this really does sound the most hygienic, honestly i think in america why they make the nurses pay for them themselves is because our government is so cheap.

    • @DuLapinBlanc
      @DuLapinBlanc 5 месяцев назад +33

      Yes it’s hygiene. And they get professionally washed. Also preferably wear shoes that you only wear in the hospital and you get a pair reimbursed every x years (it was 2 years when I worked in a hospital). All so you don’t transfer health hazards inside or outside.

      Most of that money goes to the CEO, admin, shareholders, and the executives at the hospitals since America runs them like a business. They think of nurses and doctors as work horses that bring the cash to them.

    I'm a nurse in Germany and get my scrubs from the hospital. We also don't bring them home, we leave them in bags in the changing room and they get cleaned professionally, same as all other textiles that get used in the hospital. I'd find it kinda gross, to have to lug my scrubs back home with me, especially if I get contaminated during my shift, which on my heart surgery ward isn't too rare 😅 even if I don't physically get blood, wound secretions, urin etc on me, all the hospital bugs are still not something i'd be willing to spread to my home.
    Also, all of us have uniform scrubs, doctors and nurses wear the same stuff (dark blue top, white pants) only OR gets their own scrubs (all blue). It's also required (i think??) to wear our long hair up for both hygienic and safety reasons, cause the last place I want a delirious patient to grab hold of me is by my hair. Not only would that be painful, but also give them too much leverage.

    • @phelanii4444
      @phelanii4444 5 месяцев назад

      Same here in Germany for the sleeves. We're able to have fleece jackets our hospital provides during the colder seasons, but we're supposed to take them off when we go into patients rooms. I personally never need to wear them, cause I get so hot working and the heating in house is quite good (and the patients usually crank it to the max). During night shifts though or when it drops below 0°C, only very few of us can resist having a long sleeved shirt under the scrubs. They are understanding for that, though so it's usually fine.

    For being in health care I really thought the hospital would provide you with your own scrubs.
    Edit: also with the amount of money people have to pay to even get checked out, I thought it would have been enough to give their workers their own personalized outfit. instead of them using their own paycheck to have to buy their own things. it's bizarre to me and I'm in america.

    Our hospital system (in U.S.) started providing scrubs to all departments- because they wanted all of us to have an embroidered logo on the tops. Full-time get 4 sets, PRN get 2. Then (supposedly) a set for your anniversary. This happened, of course, after I had already built enough sets for the week.

    My hospital in AUS provides scrubs with a yearly allotment of 5x tops 5x pants, 1x either a vest or jacket. However they're our own scrubs that we keep/maintain so we're given a laundry allowance and a shoe allowance on top of our regular pay each fortnight. You can buy more scrubs if needed and can claim back on tax and if you require new scrubs for maternity then you're allotted those free as well. Our scrubs are a bit different, the pants are tailored and are a button + zip instead of a drawer string, they're very sturdy, thick yet cool and quick dry as well. Except for theatre, they just have communal scrubs that are cleaned by a laundry service.

    Yes. I have worked for two hospitals and you have to buy your own uniforms. Some areas require you to buy certain colors too. I had to wear scrubs as a receptionist for a doctor’s office and was told I had to buy them myself. So expensive 🥲 regarding uniforms in general in the US, some corporate companies will even make you buy work shirts but make you return them if you ever leave the company. They won’t give you your last paycheck until you do so as well. It’s crazy here.

    I’m not a nurse but work with lab animals and we have free scrubs that you can use for your shift but have to stay in the building. They’re thin and kind of uncomfortable so some people choose to buy their own scrubs out of pocket but those still have to stay in the building. (A laundry service comes and cleans our free scrubs and there’s a washing machine for use by those who bought their own so it genuinely should never have to leave the building)

  • @elainimiranda

    The US is insane on that. The scrubs are provided by the hospital cause 1. hygiene, you leave them there, the shoes, mask and cap too, and the only thing you take home with you is underwear and socks, that most likely didn't get much contaminated. 2. They're color coded and embroidered. 3. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to demand workers to pay for uniform outta pocket, unless there's no uniform and you can work in whatever clothes you own.

  • @carolinaVF24

    I'm still studying midwifery, in my last year now. Even the students get uniforms where I'm from. It's because of hygiene. We also are not aloud to have our hair touching our shoulders, and long sleeves are a no go for everyone in the hospital. Only doctors doing consultation are allowed long sleeves and untied hair. I would go crazy if I had to bring uniforms with blood on them home.

    Could use a seam ripper to pick out the old hospital logo. I really does seem criminal that you have to pay for your own uniform, especially as you likely wear a few a day depending on shift

    Idk why ppl are so shocked about this? Most professions you need to buy your own clothes so why would in any different in a hospital. The Drs, PAs, admins, and other nurses that don’t have to wear scrubs arnt provided with work clothes by the hospital either. Hospitals in countries with universal healthcare provide clothes bc their it’s not their money that they’re spending.
    I think the misconception is viewing it as a “uniform”. Scrubs are a uniform in a hospital the same way a suit is a uniform in a corporate office, you wouldn’t expect an accounting firm to provide everyone with an appropriate suit so why are scrubs different?
    As for hygiene she clearly said L&D and OR have to wear hospital scrubs bc they need to be sterile but in the rest of the hospital, like I mentioned above, you have all sorts of other staff that see patients in outside clothes so what’s the difference?

      Still doesn’t make sense for inpatient wards. It’s also gross the other way around - nurses walking into grocery stores, buses with clothes that have come into contact with sick people.

    • @Isredbullkosher

      @@sydneyharbour-bridges8090 no what doesn’t make sense is to assume otherwise. Everyone comes into contact with sick people and some ppl are sick and spread it without realizing. Anyway, except for a few particular deadly illnesses none of the hospital staff are wearing hazmat suits and the patients arnt in airlocks so even if nurses do change out of scrubs and shower after their shifts they’re still going to be carrying germs from the hospital.

    I've worked at hospitals that provide scrubs but it's a limited option and has the hospital logo on it. I would rather pay for and pick my own scrubs any day. Plus they aren't that expensive and you only need 3-4 pair for a week.

    I am surprised an hospital in the USA gives scrubs. I am crying now because I have to take the scrubs that I brought to a monogram shop to get the hospital logo put on it because “it is required for the employees.”

      Idea
      Get the shop to make you a patch of the monogram that you can attach to the scrubs in a way that can be removed later.
      Just a thought

    Just a question, how does an undershirt work when trying to prevent infection. I've always heard you need to be bare below the elbow. Do you just roll the sleeves up? No hate just curious 🙂.

    This might sound stupid but like how do you insure that they are clean? The country I live in you go into the hospital in your own clothes and change into fresh scrubs in a changing room at the hospital. People in the US seem like they change at home and then wear their scrubs in the car and in the winter in their private jacket and I just feel like even if people wash their scrubs correctly(which like how do u insure that?) there is so much risk of contamination just so big. Even if you don't work in like OR people at hospitals are often more venerable and it just seems like US hospitals unesseseraly put patients into risks. I just feel like this is something not talked about enough

    it’s crazy you have to buy your own scrubs 😬. does any hospital in the US provide them? also, isn’t it a bit not very hygienic to go from home to work with the scrubs and take back the scrubs home from work?

    I’m shocked at how many people are surprised by healthcare providers purchasing their own uniforms! At my work (vet hospital) we usually get a budget to spend on specific scrubs from a catalogue of theirs. When I quit, I had to give everything back- even with my name embroidered on. When I went to my new job, they only provided us with 1 uniform- which won’t last a whole week working full time. Also scrubs are too expensive, Walmart ones are 70$ for the top and bottom set 🫠

    Even though it has the hospital's logo on it or your organization's logo you still have to pay for them.
