Wearing a face mask could be tough, especially if you have to work with one on all day. But did you know that residents of Miyake-jima, a small island off the coast of Tokyo, Japan, had to carry and wear gas masks for years? Let’s get into it.

There's another volcano called Soufrière Hills on the British island of Montserrat
its 1995-1997 eruptions caused the capital Plymouth to be evacuated, burnt, and buried in ash. It's still the de jure capital of the island (until a new capital is built), which makes it the only ghost town that serves as the capital of a territory. And to this day, half of the island is an exclusion zone as a result of the volcanic activity. Plymouth is the Pompeii of the Caribbean

I remember when Mt St Helens blew in the 80s. We had something like an inch of ash on the ground for weeks where I lived. Then it turned to slime for quite a few rains. Definitely needed masks for a while then.
Some of my family members remembered the window glass shaking in the frames and a loud roar sound in northern Utah when Mt. St. Helens blew. I saw video footage of the aftermath and it must have been a forceful explosion
That sludge was something I'll never forget. I remember it being like dough. I have multiple jars of ash still sitting on my shelf.
@@manifestationsofasort I wish I would have gotten some. I was a bit young then though.

I was in college then, and I had at least 1 friend who ended up stuck in Europe during study abroad because there was a period where absolutely all flights were grounded
I live in Germany and the sky was sooo blue. Not disturbed by any planes. It was cool. But I didn't have to go on a flight😂 And the volcano is easy to pronounce. It's like eye-ya-fyuh-tluh-jök-ktl. Ö is like the i in flirt or bird but shorter. Ktl should actually be something like kütl, but since English speakers can't pronounce the ü anyway, I think it's more accurate that way.

Karens after wearing a mask for 0.0001 seconds: This is abuse
Take my like or else I’ll like it
Ahahahahah so true.
Not suprising since communal societies tent to have better morals than individualistic "societies".
In that case though the mask was needed because of toxic fumes, and the masks didn't need to be worn in buildings for hours, just when walking to and from places outside.
Masks currently do, for something that unlike toxic volcanic gas isn't fatal to most (and many don't even get severe symptoms), and people have to wear it inside which hinders development of facial recognition in children in particular, especially when children aren't even at much risk to get Covid any moe serious than the flu.
Edit: When i say "facial recognition" I don't mean technology, I mean a child's basic capacity to recognize facial expressions that develops early on and is harmd by all this mask-wearing for something they aren't at risk for.

Pompeii is cool and all. It's actually absolutely amazing, but if you really wanna see in detail more about roman life, herculaneum is the best. Hey Brew, love your videos, they are always so exciting and informing :D I just noticed 1 small "error" in this video at 8:46. Here, you show a molecular model of sulfur dioxide, but with 2 yellow "balls" and 1 red "ball". Sulfur dioxide is made of 1 sulfur atom and 2 oxygen atoms. Traditionally and almost universally, sulfur is colored yellow and oxygen is colored red in molecular models, so the model should contain 1 yellow "ball" and 2 red "balls". that moment when you turn into a tourist attraction
Something I'd like to mention about flights being banned over areas of volcanic activity, it isn't because of SO2 or deadly gases, it's due to the ash, the ash tends to accumulate inside the combustion chambers of modern turbofan engines causing them to flameout, plus the ash essentially acts like sandpaper to the planes airframe, windows and damages instrumentation. Its essentially like driving down a long winding country road with no headlights, throttle control, steering or brakes.
