    I can see the next step in this idea: cut the while into quarters. then, contemplate at what point a vehicle where the wheels are divided like this transitions from being a wheeled vehicle to being a walker

    If you put the half wheels side by side instead of in front of each other, the off road bump issue should be a lot better. Plus you could keep them in sync much easier

    you can link the half wheels mechanically with a bar like steam train wheels. You just have to connect from the half radius of one wheel to a bar extending to the same point vertically from the other wheel. That way you're not limited to controller speed.

    I think the reason the petrol engine did well is because when a half wheel lost contact with the ground it whipped around really quickly until it was touching the ground again. So the only time there would be a dip is when both half wheel were perfectly aligned.

    I think the leading vs trailing wheel difference is what's making the bumps so bad. On the real bike it accounts for bumps by having a whole wheel in front, and the half wheels being chain driven. I think a reverse trike would be better suited to show the full effects of this thing

    I learned that Scrapman doesn't know that tricycles, and trikes (3-wheelers) in general, are meant to be driven in the opposite direction from the one crapman drove them. Two wheels in front, one in the back. That's how you prevent tipping when you have forward speed, since you're going to move much slower backwards anyway, in a normal vehicle.

    What if to make it faster you connected two bearings in series with a pipe in between? This would definitely make the creation wider and a bit more complex but it would double the max speed without sacrificing the synchronization, correct? Might be worth a try in the future (unless something like this has been tried before and scrap mechanic physics doesn't deal with it well).

    • @Hadeks_Marow
      @Hadeks_Marow 2 года назад

      He knew, he just didn't want to have to rebuild the entire frame just to increase the speed. The current frame didn't have the width to fit the extra bearing. Not only that, but I think the point is proof of concept. So max speed is a non-factor when trying to prove that he personally "can" make it work in-game. In other words, he wasn't looking for bonus points. He's fine with just passing with a C+ grade if it means not having to rebuild. xP

    • @Hadeks_Marow
      @Hadeks_Marow 2 года назад

      @@BeefIngot it looks only 3 wide. you would need 5 wide to double joint. Its a simple process, agreed, but it would probably require reconnecting all the connections due to the frame getting detached during the extending period. This can also mess up esthetics on the handle bars where he might want to widen them to match the width of the half wheel frame.
      Again, all simple stuff, but since it adds nothing (where speed is a non-factor), it arguably wouldn’t be worth what little/minimal trouble it would be.
      Stability however is seems to be more than a non-factor as it seems to determine functionality. This could be why he took the time to edit the steering angles. I just wish i understood why he didn’t smooth out the wheel with wedges for better stability. Its an even simpler and quicker process and theoretically could improve stability/functionality.
      My guess is bare minimum is good enough? Proof of concept mentality?

    You should have added two full wheels to make the comparison more fair, even if the original had half wheels adding one full wheel isn't really fair, because maybe if you added two full wheels the effect might be close to the two half wheels on bumpy terrain.

  • @padalan2504
    @padalan2504 2 года назад +7

    I think the wheels were not technically half and half, since they were created by removing the middle row of blocks. So the centre of the half wheel is offset and the wheels have a two gaps in their rotation where it can bump into the terrain, that's why the kick up happens every now and then.

    That controller powered wheel hast me thinking off a challenge for MP Monday:
    Every wheel powered by a different source.
    so could for example just have a Gas Engine, Electric Engine, Controller and friction powered wheel... though could also go with things like pistons or jets for powering some wheels.
    A lot of the challenge would come from balancing the wheels to spin similarly enough to not throw you off the track, so I doubt mixing electric and gas engine would go very well with how different they behave. 🤔

    edit: btw, making the pivot in the middle of the two-halves-is-a-wheel makes it a lot worse.
