It was, and I find it fascinating this was the first year of Rush Limbaugh. While there are many factors for the world being the way it is now (and yes, insane) he is one of the major reasons why. That divisive punditry and fear mongering (now a gigantic industry with MANY participants) has done so much damage to the US population, I wonder if we'll ever recover.

I visited Lockerbie a couple years ago. No sign of the "gouge" in town now. The memorial is still visited regularly with lots of flowers. I was there right at sunset in between Christmas and New Year's. Stormy, windy, rainy, and snow and sleet. Eerie, but peaceful. RIP. Very much worth visiting, still burned in my mind. Sat for a long time in a little chip shop afterward wondering how a plane could fall out of the sky and land smack dab in a little village. Then talked a long bit with a local shop owner about it. She was very greatful I remembered all these years later even though I have no connection, just memories. I love Scotland.

Against strong American objections, Scotland released the Lockerbie bomber in 2009 for "compassionate reasons" since he was diagnosed with cancer. The Scots believed the bomber only had months to live but he ended up living another 3 years. When the bomber returned to Libya he was given a hero's welcome.
It was later revealed that the bomber was released as part of a deal to get BP (British Petroleum) a favorable oil contract with Libya.

I don't remember the exact date, but Nick, Jr., famous preschool block of the already-famous Nickelodeon, premiered this year.
Sharon, Lois & Bram's Elephant Show was the only OG Nick, Jr. show I watched as a kid, mostly growing up with the circa 1994 rebrand shows, notably The Busy World Of Richard Scarry and whatever shows co-aired on Noggin after 1999.
I actually remember watching the Geraldo Rivera clip on RUclips many years ago when I was a teenager. My late dad and one of my brothers thought it was hilarious. It certainly set the path for Jerry Springer's stupidity.

I remember that by 1988, records were pretty much phased out at many department stores in favor of cassettes. And of course, CD's were slowly starting to gain traction (even though they had been out since 1982), and many stores had a small but growing CD section

JUNE 28: Legendary NY Rap group PUBLIC ENEMY releases their seminal sophomore lp, "IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK" on DEF JAM/CBS records. The album would go on to become a certified classic among many as it captivated music listeners outside of its primary rap audience; Combining militant yet streetwise political and social commentary with a unique multi-layered sound of samples and drums. The album contains hits such as, "BRING THE NOISE", "DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE", "NIGHT OF THE LIVING BASEHEADS", "BLACK STEEL IN THE HOUR OF CHAOS", and "REBEL WITHOUT A PAUSE".
AUGUST 6: MTV employee/program director TED DEMME produces and premieres the classic video show, "YO! MTV RAPS". The program, hosted by ex graffiti artist/personality Fred Braithwaite p/k/a FAB 5 FREDDY, and later, DR. DRE and ED LOVER, played a significant role in having Hip-Hop culture spread among viewers/listeners in suburban areas and around the world; Outside of primary Hip-Hop audiences.
DECEMBER: TOMMY MOTTOLA, then president of Sony Music/Columbia Records, signs an 18 year old former background singer/aspiring solo artist MARIAH CAREY to a major record deal. She would release her debut lp two years later and go on to become a legendary Pop/R&B superstar.

This was also the year that cracks started to show in rock-and-roll. Remember White Lion, and Warrant? Guns-n-Roses and Skid Row tried to save it, but their efforts were in vain. This was also the year that Mr. Big formed as a band, and they would go on to put the last nail in the coffin of metal rock and glam rock.

I turned 20 in 1980. Got married for the first time in ‘85. I miss how we used to dress. When we went out, we all dressed well. “Sharp Dressed Man” was my mantra. I guess that’s why I love Italy so much, even casual they are well dressed.
I remember being at clubs and everything would stop when the videos “Beat It”, “Billy Jean”, and “Thriller” would come on, and everyone was trying to Moonwalk.
“Miami Vice” ruled the airwaves, and set the standards for both how men dressed and the future of cop shows.
