I remember 1981 all too well. My parents’ divorce was finalized 2 1/2 months before my 18th birthday/their would-be 20th wedding anniversary (yes, same day). Nothing like having your mom painfully weeping on what would have been her wedding anniversary while “celebrating” turning 18. As birthdays go, it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Two months later, I graduated. Three months after that, my grandfather succumbed to his cancer, just as I was to start college. I couldn’t go to his funeral because Mom couldn’t afford a plane ticket to NC *and* my first semester at the U. When I cried, she looked at me and asked which thing Grandpa would want the money spent on, going to college or a flight to his funeral. Grandpa had a master’s degree. He’d have chewed me, probably in Italian, if I didn’t start school. I didn’t visit his grave until 3 years later when Mom flew me to NC to spend spring break with Grandma. She told me then that Grandpa would have fully understood and been very proud of me. (She too had a college degree and would pass away 32 years later at 107.)
Brantley Hester, every word of it. (Dad was the one who asked for the divorce when I was a junior.). The last time I saw my grandpa was over Easter break that year when we (Dad, his future wife, her twin daughters, my sister and I) drove down from Minnesota to NC in a family friend’s RV. The starter or something in its vicinity had a bad wire that when it got warm and expanded would short the system and stop the vehicle until it cooled off again. Nothing like being repeatedly pulled over on the outside of the road, either on interstate freeways or overlooking deep ravines in the Smoky Mountains, as large semis blow past you and while your younger sisters are up top working on their tans. It actually died in the major intersection a couple of blocks from Grandpa and Grandma’s house. I was the one sent to go tell them where we were. Fortunately Grandpa was well known and loved in the neighborhood and knew a mechanic who could help.
It was the beginning of an awesome decade with some of the best music and movies ever to come out. Most modern movies, shows and tv commercials always reference something from the 80s, whether it be a movie or a song from the 80s. Loved the 80s and had a blast everyday and I don't think I ever had a dull moment or was ever bored.
Did anyone else watch "I love the 80s" (or 70s or 90s) on VH1? I watched every single episode, I absolutely loved it. I'm so glad to see this series on RUclips !

This Timeline show has legit made me seek out my old childhood friends from the 80s in the hopes of recapturing part of the magic of the best decade ever.
I was born in '72 and so I was fortunate enough to experience and remember the entire decade of the 80's. It is and will forever be my favorite decade! The TV shows, movies, cartoons, music, toys and the kids I grew up with were the best! My friends and I would play outside everyday. So many great memories were made in the '80s!
I absolutely LOVE this series. I graduated high school in 1981. My head was so far in clouds (loving life), that I didn't even remember all these things. Raiders of the Lost Ark? My boyfriend and I watched it 6 time in one night at a drive-in in Texas. Thank you for bringing back those memories!
@1 9 Yeah, and every African American that served this country did so to ensure your freedoms and way of life, giving you the opportunity to say such dumb shit for the public to see. It's your opinion and you have a right to it. But remember, nothing in this world is free. Someone has to pay for this freedom that so many people take for granted.
Awesome video. I was born in 79 , so my clear memories of big events of the 80s dont really start until around 84 and 85. Its nice to see what i missed.
Thank you for sensibly admitting that. I've seen comments on videos like this of people claiming they have vivid memories of being 1 or 2 years old. That's delusional.
I love this video series on the 1980s. I was born in 1973, and my childhood and memories began around 1980. The 1980s were a great decade to grow up in, a great time to remember, and an era of culture that developed some of the most iconic music and television shows in history.
I was born in October of ‘81. Being a kid in the 80s was the best. MOTU, Transformers, Thundercats, we were on top of the world. And the music, you all know about the music.
Twisted Sister Van Halen Rolling Stones. The music ❤️❤️❤️. Today's music doesn't compare at all. There are good singers today but the feel of today's music just isn't there for me. The old songs like TS's "We're not gonna take it" or TRS "Satisfaction". VH "1984" was one of my favorite albums.
I own a DMC-12 DeLorean. I really appreciate that the video just talked about its significance without making any lame jokes. Most people don't know it, but the project was built in Northern Ireland and was meant to help reduce the sectarian violence of The Troubles by getting Protestants and Catholics to work together, and for awhile, it helped somewhat by giving people well-paying jobs and showing people (mostly young men who might otherwise be drawn to the paramilitary organizations) that they were better off together than divided. Classy move not just making time travel and cocaine jokes - that's rare. Cheers.
I believe the DeLorean plant was the single largest contributor to the Good Friday Agreement becoming a reality. Without such, no one would have any reason to believe peace could come and stay in N. Ireland. RIP, Mr. DeLorean.

@ It didn't help that there was a recession in the U.S., and the car equalled, if not exceeded, the mortgages of many Americans. @@brianrobertson1211 the t top was awesome, yes. I don't know if you're aware, but there's a lot of drugs going around now too. I don't think much has changed in that respect. Except the potency. And if love each episode to be 60 minutes with the beginning and ending episodes of each decade being 90 minutes long. This would make amazing money on a bigger level. And it needs some good promotion! You've really got something here. So simple. But so entertaining and informative. And most of all, nostalgic. These days, nostalgia is selling like crazy.
This is such a great idea for a series, this will be a fun stroll thru my childhood and teen memories
What happened during 1981?
Me: DON'T STOP BELIEVING 🎶 HOLD ON TO THAT FEELING!
Hahaha! ! :) Love it!!!
Absolute magic.
Cyanide in Tylenol capsules.
@@carlbowles1808 Oh yeah, those were some scary days.
But it happened in September of '82.
It's hard to believe, but almost nothing was safety sealed prior to that.
I remembered during 1981 was Princess Diana's wedding, Atari, MTV, Olivia Newton-John's "Physical", McRib, Weekly Nighttime Soaps, & Endless Love. 📺
1981 the year I went to the second grade. So much nostalgia. I remember my older cousin who was a teenager having the poster of the rap group The Sugarhill Gang on his wall. And that was years before rap went mainstream.
I used to roller skate at the skating rink to The Sugar Hill Gang. I think I still have some of their 45's.
I'm now a big fan of Timeline, history is fascinating.
I was born in 1981 ! The 80's was epic !
So you remember like 4-5 years of them as a 5-10 year old...
@@charlesblanton1008 you would be surprised !
My favorite 80s memories: my non-existence in this world. It sure was good old time.

Ahhhhhh my birth year!😊 Thanks Weird History!
I was a happy 8 year old kid without a care in the world.
It's crazy how it feels like 1981 wasn't that far away in the past, but then I realize my mom was only 10 at that time, and now she is almost 50😳
I was a happy 11 year old!
I was seven; but I remember a lot of this.
Was a junior in high school, took me down memory lane...😊
I was 4. What a great decade to grow up in.
My favorite memory was escaping high school in the trunk of a friend's car.
I laid down under a blanket once lol. My friend got to leave early for work program.
You early 80s high schoolers were my idols. I was about 5-8 years old but I remember your Trans Ams and Van Halen blasting stereos. I wanted to be yall so badly. But no. We got Nirvana and depression.
@@ghostrider2664 Not much to admire. Too much drug going around. We had some cool car, though. A friend from that time has three vintage Trans Ams, one of which is the Sammy Hagar style red T top. The Reagan era ushered in a lot of good music.
@@brianrobertson1211 the t top was awesome, yes. I don't know if you're aware, but there's a lot of drugs going around now too. I don't think much has changed in that respect. Except the potency.
I think you downplay the coolness factor though. I remember I had a hot babysitter, Farrah Fawcett hair, the whole thing. And her boyfriend had the trans am. He would pull up to the house and man.....I always wished I could be like that dude and get a chick like that.
So 40 years later I tracked her down and did her. True story. She wasn't that good. Pretty underwhelming, honestly.
@@ghostrider2664 The vehicles were great!
I had a '71 Plymouth Duster. Equipped with an 8 track player.
I had many nice vehicles back in the '80's.
Thank you for making this series
It is so great to learn all this history from my parent's era.

@USBM Soldier1981 yeah, but pop music includes pop rock which is the Beatles and stones and that. I think you mean modern popular radio stuff.

Was born till 88, but I fucking love this. Takes me away from this insane time.
1981, I turned 10. Had a great birthday party at the arcade then went roller skating, followed by a sleepover. A mini rubics cube necklace was my best present
I turned 11. Lol
Ahhh that was the life
💗💗💗
How do you remember it so well? I'm only 22 and no way I can remember what I did on each of my birthdays back then.
@@human678 I don’t recall all my birthdays. This one in particular my parents splurged on the activities. Probably because the year prior I spent my birthday on the couch slathered in calamine lotion due to chicken pox
In 1981 Video Killed the Radio Star. In 2019 MTV really doesn't play videos and I heard the Buggles on the radio. :)
MTV has been trash for a long time now, it's sad because MTV use to be awesome and fun.
Right? MTV sold out. Let's get another station on cable going that actually brings back music videos. Cool medium.
love this series..thank you
Really enjoying these 80s videos!!! Please keep doing them! As someone who loves everything 80s but was born in 91 (so close), this is as close as I’ll get with living in my favorite decade!
