1980 was a important year for me. I turned 13 and I kissed my first girl. Blues Brothers was my first R rated movie and I unashamedly wept when I heard John Lennon had been shot. I remember everything from this video, but those were the most important for me.
I have mostly good memories of 1980. Started my sophomore year in high school and met some wonderful friends, a few of whom I still keep in touch with to this day. After having caddied at a local country club that summer, I started my first real job at McDonald's in early November. I also got pneumonia for the first time in my life that summer while at band camp. I also remember Mount St. Helens erupting, the presidential election, and John Lennon being shot and killed. Definitely some highs, but also a few big lows that year.
I can’t believe there was no mention of “The Empire Strikes Back”, arguably the best of the franchise and leading to a 3 year wait to see if Darth Vader WAS Luke’s father.
I was riding with my dad in his semi and we had parked at Jubitz truckstop in Portland the night before the "great ashstorm" of Mt St Helens. Next morning the staff was running around handing out toilet paper to the truckers so they could wrap their air cleaners to keep the ash out of the engines..
I turned 15 in 1980 and remember all these things, seems like it was just yesterday we were heading into the 80's and that was over 40 years ago. I miss those times , although there were some terrible tragedies that year, it just felt like better times than what we live in now.
I was 18 in 1980. It was not a good year for me. Both of my parents were in the hospital that year, and my mom was diagnosed with cancer- at Christmas time. But there was great music released in 1980: London Calling, by The Clash; The River, by Bruce Springsteen; Just Can't Stop It,by The English Beat were only 3 of the great albums released that year.
1980 I was doing a tour of duty in Korea, dancing away the cold nights in disco clubs, drinking rice wine like water, facing North Korean soldiers along the DMZ, and singing along with Mel Tillis' song I Want To Go Stateside.. I would do it all over again..minus the hangovers🕺👌🇺🇸
the saddest year in rock history. John Lennon assassinated by a lunatic. Bon Scott dead of alcohol poisoning and John Bonham left us too soon also. RIP
The Blues Brothers and Caddyshack came out at the same time. I was 20 and hung out in an arcade in Pompano Beach Florida. We could pop open the exit doors of the movie theater next door where there was good air conditioning and watch either while smoking weed and/or drinking beer. I've seen both of those iconic movies dozens of times.
What a way to bookend a year. The American hockey team defeating the Soviets remains the most memorable moment in sports for me. We were in such a collective funk at the time and those kids made us believe in miracles at a time when we were desperate for something positive to happen. It was huge. Then that a-hole shot John Lennon to end the year on a complete down note. For my friends and I, that was our Kennedy assassination-like moment. My room mate and I had come in from a night out at the corner bar and we turned on the TV. The sound was turned down but we saw John's image on the 11:00 PM news. We figured it might be a concert announcement since Double Fantasy had just been released. When we turned up the volume and heard the newscaster tell us he had been murdered we just stood there staring at nothing, not saying a word. The only thing I could think was who the hell would want to kill John Lennon? I called a dear friend of mine who used to sing along with Beatle albums with me when we were kids and we both cried. That is the only time I have ever cried over a celebrity dying. I can't believe his little boy is older now than John was when he was killed. RIP John. I'm sure you were there to show George around the place when he arrived. But not all was doom and gloom. 1980 was the first time I got to vote in a presidential election. I was a newly minted citizen and I remember being so proud I carried my paperwork to the polling station as proof. This was a moment I had waited for since I was five years old. And the woman at the desk didn't even look. Oh well, it was one of the highlights of my life and I will always have fond memories of 1980 for that moment alone.

The song that I remember was Queens another One bites the dust, and also Diana Ross's upside down. I also remember a little show called, Too close for comfort', starting the late Ted Knight.
Also in 1980: Saturday Night Live had it's last episode with the original cast. Later that year, an entirely new cast was introduced, but to generally poor reviews. "Fridays", starring regulars Larry David, Michael Richards, and Melanie Chartoff, premiered on ABC as an alternative to SNL. Louisville won the 1980 NCAA Men's basketball championship in Indianapolis. Hall and Oates released their first self-produced album "Voices". Spawning the #1 hit "Kiss On My List", #5 "You Make My Dreams" and two other top 40 hits. "Too Close for Comfort" starring Ted Knight premiered. And last, and certainly least, yours truly entered this world.
Still my favorite year after all these years. The music was insane. Great movie flicks. It's hard to believe that 1980 is now 42 freaking years ago. I just turned 60, but my body feels like it's 90 years old. Time is no friend of mine.

As a Washingtonian I remember the mt.st. Helens eruption very well…I was right in the thick of it! And as a Beatle fan for a lonnnng time I remember the sad news of John Lennon. It’s was a good year and crummy year but nothing compares to the last couple of years we have all gone through! We all keep going strong, and we will! Love this channel…thank you!
I was at band practice when Mt. St Helens blew. It was surreal because it was a sunny blue sky in Seattle west of the volcano, but to the east of the volcano it was literally...black. During a subsequent eruption Seattle got a dusting of ash. I remember going out to my car to go to work. It was drizzling so the ash was like a thin layer of mud on my windshield. Turned on the windshield wipers....BIG MISTAKE!!! The ash was silicon and the tiny crystals instantly scratched up my windshield. Had to get it replaced. Also Boeing put caps over all their jet engines so the ash wouldn't get into the engine and ruin it. I was in a Beatle band and had to leave work when I heard about Lennon. I was devastated and didn't want my co-workers to see my crying.

Marking the end of the 70's was sad, but at least what replaced it was an interesting and exciting decade in the 80's. I remember 1980 starting off with my family moving from a small bungalow to a much larger house in the spring / summer of that year. That was also the year I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the theaters, and I remember my dad taking me to the local department store to stock up on Star Wars action figures. I also remember acquiring other cool toys like Big Trak and the Starbird Avenger. Those were my standout memories of 1980.
1980 saw my sister had Open Heart Surgery at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, I would move up to the elementary level at where I went for schooling, my Phillies win the World Series, and would stay inside Walt Disney World for the first time at Lake Buena Vista Resort Villas (Now Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort).
Bon Scott, Alfred Hitchcock, Mae West, Ian Curtis, John Bonham, Darby Crash, and Tim Hardin died in 1980. The Empire Strikes Back was the highest grossing film. Magic Johnson got his first NBA championship ring.
I grew up in Pittsburgh and clearly remember Nick Perry and his 666 fix that happened at WTAE channel 4. He was a local tv host for every thing from a cartoon show when I was a young child, to bowling for dollars, which I was on when a neighbor lady was a contestant on that show. Thanks for the memorys.
I was 7 in 1980 so vague memories of the 1970s but the 1980s were my teenage years. What a decade to be a teen! Empire Strikes Back, first Star Wars film in theatre. Also, many great mid-to late 1970s TV show repeats in the early 1980s...
Also in 1980… That’s Incredible! hosted by Fran Tarkenton, John Davidson and Cathy Lee Crosby premiered on ABC. Texas starring Beverlee McKinsey premiered on NBC. It’s a Living starring Barrie Youngfellow, Ann Jillian, Marian Mercer, Paul Kreppel, Susan Sullivan and Wendy Schaal premiered on ABC.
Also in 1980… The Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins was released. Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall was released.
What a year for me. Turned 12 this year(May 7). The 80's were the beginning of puberty, the start of my teen/young adult yrs. I remember the John Lennon shooting/tragedy like yesterday. Was watching the Monday night football game(Patriots-Dolphins)when Howard Cosell made the 1st announcement John was shot. The game went on and after a time out/long commercial break, Cosell announced his death. As a Memphian, we had a heat wave that summer that killed dozens of people(mainly the elderly). This was Magic Johnson(and the Celtics' Larry Bird)rookie year when the Lakers beat the 76ers in 6 games. In game 6, Magic played center and almost got a triple-double. This game was also tape delayed through most of the country(the NBA on CBS aired the game starting at 10:30PM Friday Central time).

I’d love to come home and watch Three’s Company on television. I would also love to experience the horror renaissance of the 1980s.
The 80s were hands down the greatest decade in the last 60 years for America. Society was finally integrated, we had creativity off the charts, people were more likely to at least have common sense, and we actually MADE stuff IN America, rather than importing crap from sweatshops in dictatorship countries. Also add in the fact that, this was the ONLY decade from the 1940s-2010s that America was not involved in any major wars (even the 50s had Korea). A time of optimism, hard work and hope, things that are SORELY missing today.
@@thunderbird1921 By the 1980s, the sexual revolution was eating away at the culture. The craziness we see now is the logical conclusion of what started decades ago. The fashion also isn’t nearly as polished or ornate as the 40s and 50s.
@@batman5224 I know what you mean, they had their flaws (nasty labor union fights and drug problems were also there), but compared to the modern polarized insanity, as well as the crapshow that was the 60s and early 70s, the 80s were pretty darn good and sane.

Ya know, I was only 13 for most of it, but 1980 was kind of a downer. Fortunately, I'd gotten my first guitar for Xmas of '79, so concentrating on learning to play made me feel better.

I remember the Pennsylvania Lottery "fix, fix, fix" scandal very well. The numbers (then) were drawn at WTAE in Pittsburgh, And Nick Perry was a local "celebrity" (TV host.) The station was about a half miles from my house, LOL. The weird part is that it didn't "shock" me or particularly BOTHER me, for this reason: Even IF every drawing was fixed, It's still a random "game": "They" don't know if YOU (the player) is or is not also "playing" the 4s & 6s. "They" DO know "They" will "win", and YOU might ALSO win! Is THAT corrupt? Hell Yeah - It IS!. (This ain't Poker or Blackjack!). Now think about THIS when you buy a "scratch-off" lottery ticket, The SAME THING is going on. The people making the tickets (The State and the contractors who print them) ALREADY KNOW what tickets ARE winners AND where they are. (They intentionally spread them out so there are not concentrated in any specific area). The difference was that "fix, fix, fix" was perpetrated by NON STATE employees. The effect on the players is NO different than a preprinted "scratch off" (Picking numbers is "dumb luck" for the player). This the issue with ANY form of "random" gambling. You ARE being screwed, The difference is WHO is screwing you. This "rant" isn't really against gambling, Just "chance/random" gambling, like slot machines and "scratch-offs". Sports betting at least has a verifiable outcome and requires some knowledge on the part of the bettor. (The GAMES could be rigged, but at LEAST you can watch the game being played) and card games have an element of SKILL as well as "luck". Since we KNOW randomized "bets" are a ripoff, I'd rather be ripped off by a volunteer fire department or some such charity "drawing". You MIGHT win, but the loses (or "skim") is in reality a donation anyway.

Was that on Federal Highway the Pompano fashion Square?
I'd give two arms and a testicle to go back to 1980 and live thru 1988 and just keep looping those years.
I was 15. Life was very good.
Lennon was a communist and Yoko was and is a POS and her music was $hit!
#1 decade/my decade & still goin strong! We r the 80s!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Also in 1980 , the Empire Strikes Back debuted in May
Funny thing is they mention Return of the Jedi in the 1983 video.
Also in 1980…
The Empire Strikes Back starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher was released.
Don't forget the American gigolo featuring Richard Gere.
Plus Airplane! which introduced us to Julie Haggerty.

The song that I remember was Queens another One bites the dust, and also Diana Ross's upside down. I also remember a little show called, Too close for comfort', starting the late Ted Knight.
Also in 1980:
Saturday Night Live had it's last episode with the original cast.
I am 61, and I agree- getting older is no picnic.
i do remember who shot jr i think cbs made a big deal out of it with t-shirt's and bumber stickers & a song about it. this was the i got my atari 2600 for christmas.
Was a fun year to be a kid back then
It really was. 😊
These are so well done and comprehensive. Hopefully he narrates one for the 2000’s.
I remember the hockey game. I was sitting in a car in Syracuse, NY with my parents, listening to it. My father was very excited.
I remember all these events perfectly. It baffles me that it was over 40 years ago. 😂
RIp John Lennon. I was 16 years old and had The Beatles posters all over my room.
I was devastated when he was murdered.
1980. I was 14. Saw my first concert; Rush Permanent Waves tour. Lost my virginity. Graduated Jr. High. Great memories.

We were suffering from the utter failure of Jimmy Carter. Barrack Obama and Joe Biden are worse.

I miss the 80's so much!
Famous in that year
John Davidson ( thirty nine years old)
Brooke Shields ( fifteen years old )
Dick Clark ( fifty one years old)
Michael Jackson ( twenty two years old)
Johnny Carson ( fifty five years old)
Michael Landon ( forty four years old)
Richard Dawson ( forty eight years old)
Marking the end of the 70's was sad, but at least what replaced it was an interesting and exciting decade in the 80's.
I was born September 11th, 1980.
Remarkable video.
1980 was a crazy year! 🤯
My last year of High School, turned 18 and married my High School Sweetheart 4 days later...
May 21, 1980. The greatest motion picture of all time is released.
The Empire Strikes Back.
I remember watching THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK in 1980.
I was 7 in 1980 so vague memories of the 1970s but the 1980s were my teenage years. What a decade to be a teen! Empire Strikes Back, first Star Wars film in theatre. Also, many great mid-to late 1970s TV show repeats in the early 1980s...

The Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins was released.
Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall was released.
So did The Shining.
And Friday The 13th
The "Miracle on Ice" was truly a golden moment! The Shining is my favorite horror movie of all time!
Those were the good old days. I sure do wish I would have appreciated them.
Cool video only bummer is 2 minutes of commercial .
Interesting video. I was born in December 1980.
Yo dude! We are the same age but vastly different! 1980 was so fun, the music, the TV the designer jeans!
Alan CK - No matter where you were, everybody somewhere was in Jordache jeans singing Another One Bites the Dust, Do That to Me One More Time, Michael Jackson’s Rock with You or Kool and the Gang’s Celebration. It was a party in 1980!
Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals which CBS also televised when Bob Nystrom scored the overtime goal for the Islanders to win their first of four consecutive Stanley Cups.
@@MidKid61 Not a big hockey fan but i remember those Islanders teams were great in the early 80's before Wayne Gretzky and his Oilers took over the NHL.

WOW how time has flown in 1980 I was 17 and had left school November 1979. It’s amazing we’re in a new century and the world is a very different.
Hawaii Five O ended in that year & magnum P .I. Started in that year
Remember in color! What a year!
I watch Dallas on TV 📺 and love it
The 1980s is probably the most recent decade that I could probably be relatively comfortable in. It’s not my favorite decade, but compared to today, it seems like paradise. I’d love to come home and watch Three’s Company on television. I would also love to experience the horror renaissance of the 1980s.
The 80s were amazing
The 80s were hands down the greatest decade in the last 60 years for America. Society was finally integrated, we had creativity off the charts, people were more likely to at least have common sense, and we actually MADE stuff IN America, rather than importing crap from sweatshops in dictatorship countries. Also add in the fact that, this was the ONLY decade from the 1940s-2010s that America was not involved in any major wars (even the 50s had Korea). A time of optimism, hard work and hope, things that are SORELY missing today.
The 80’s were basically one big party. Seemed kind of decadent at the time. But compared to where society is now, it was downright quaint.
I thought nice. It's a little longer. But then I found it was longer because of the commercial embedded in the video.
I was in fifth grade in 1980 and have a lot of memories of these events thanks to my teacher - Miss Larsen. We had a countup each day for the hostages in Iran and had a big dance party the day they were released. She also went to Mt St Helens (I live in Utah) and brought us all back ash samples. I also remember almost every one of these other things.
I was in 3rd grade in 1980-81 and had a great teacher, as well. She did a weekly current events session, so I remember all of these items. What a time to be alive.
She sounded like an amazing teacher! 😊 I also was in 5th grade.
Major Professional Sports Champions during 1980:
MLB - Philadelphia Phillies (first World Series Championship)
NBA - Los Angeles Lakers (second NBA World Championship in L.A., 7th overall)
NFL - Oakland Raiders (second Super Bowl Championship, last in Oakland)
NHL - New York Islanders (first Stanley Cup Championship)
ALSO - In one of the biggest upsets in all of ice hockey history, the U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 in the Medal Round Semifinals on February 22, and beat Finland 4-2 on February 24, to claim the Gold Medal in Lake Placid, NY.
Major NCAA Sports Champions during 1980:
Baseball - University of Arizona Wildcats (second national championship)
Basketball - University of Louisville Cardinals (first national championship)
Football - University of Georgia Bulldogs (first national championship since 1942)

Ya know, I was only 13 for most of it, but 1980 was kind of a downer. Fortunately, I'd gotten my first guitar for Xmas of '79, so concentrating on learning to play made me feel better.
I think every generation must feel like this but, in my opinion, the 80s were the past great generation. The generation before the technology boom. The generation before the ray race. I miss those days.
I remember that well, I lived right outside Pittsburgh.
