Space Mountain was an awesome roller coaster at Disney World too. And I often refer to 81 as Cincinnati Bengal Year because that was the year they really established themselves as a powerhouse in our division (Steelers) at least for the 80s. And the year that they adopted their Bengal Striped uniforms which they still have today. Even as I said as a Steelers fan, I've always loved their "Halloween " colors, 🟧 and ◼ Orange & Black. Lastly Pitt was undefeated with Dan Marino until the Saturday after Thanksgiving, when Penn State crushed us 48-14 after we were up 14-0. They got 48 unanswered points but we did beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day 1982 so that was very cool
1981 I was 15. Freshman year in High School! Saw Beatlemania and Foreigner with Billy Squier in concert. Who could forget Fernando Valenzuela? Fernando Mania! He was great. And the Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in the World Series. Reggie played his last year in New York before going to the Angel's. Year that I visited Florida and Disney World. Boy that was fun. Also of course the baseball strike in addition to the air traffic controllers strike. If I remember, Kenneth Moffatt intervened and helped settle both. First time the Cincinnati Bengals made the Super Bowl 🏈 🥣 against Joe Montana & the 49ers. I am a Steelers fan but was torn, neither had ever won. Joe was from Ringgold which is near me but I thought the Bengals were awesome and liked Kenny Anderson who would later ironically win a ring as the Steelers QB coach with Big Ben Roethlisberger.

This is a true story. Please believe me. . I turned 12 in 1981 and I'll never forget going to see Raiders of the Lost Ark with my friends. I was excited because it had "Han Solo" in it. It was also the first time that I ever went to a roller rink. They were hugely popular back then. Now being a twelve year old my body was going through the change of puberty and I began to think about girls. Well, I'll never forget skating at the rink and all of a sudden the DJ put Waiting For A Girl Like You by Foreigner on and said this next skate will be couples only. I didn't have a girl to skate with so I just stood and watched. Well, I'm 53 now and I'm STILL WAITING to skate to that song with. pretty girl at a roller rink. The world changed in the meantime and roller rinks sadly became things of the past. You really don't see them much anywhere. Maybe someday I'll find a great girl/woman to skate to that song with at some long forgotten roller rink.
In 1981, that was a musical mis-match. Back then, Prince was probably considered another R & B or Funk act, and wasn't given an opportunity to show his talent. Mick Jagger probably picked him to open that show. Prince's day was coming, however, and his amazing talent would be soon be seen.

I turned 21 in March of 1981. And in July I got the job I had wanted since I was a kid: I became a Law Enforcement Officer. A Deputy Sheriff to be exact. When they gave me that oath of office and then issued my badge, it was the greatest feeling of accomplishment. That was the high of that year. Then just one month later in August, one of my two best friends, the man who had been best man at my wedding in 1979 and also a Deputy Sheriff there about three years before me, was killed in a motorcycle accident on the way home from work. I never got to work with him, which was another reason I had joined that particular sheriff's office. His death was not just a low point of 1981 but of my life really. I still think of him almost every single day. He left behind a young wife and a toddler daughter. She is 42 now. Dear God how time and one's life fly's by.

Who cares about sports?
God bless Ronald Reagan! I miss him. An awesome man👍🇺🇸❤️
Loving this channel!! Thank you so much for the vast amount of coverage! 😊 The 80's were the best. If only we could go back.
Life had it’s problems back then, but having the anti-social media thankfully was not one of them. You still had to get out into the world and do things (like going to crappy(?) Prince concerts) if you actually wanted to meet people … 🤔🤷♀️
I miss those days
Today MTV no longer plays music
Stupid network decay 🙄.
I don’t care for MTV anyway.
If they do it's between 2:00 - 2:20 am .....

I graduated from highschool in 1981 it's been 40 years since I've been in school. what a day to be thank you Jesus.
In the summer of 1981, Warner Brothers Productions released "The Legend of the Lone Ranger," starring Clinton Spillsbury (a former schoolteacher turned one-hit wonder movie star) in the lead role with Native-American born actor Michael Horse as his faithful friend & sidekick Tonto. High-ho, Silver! Away!
My sister and I saw Escape from New York at the theater. She died in 09 of ovarian cancer. We saw a lot of movies back then . It was cheap.
Also in 1981...

I/we didn't know that Tony Randall, who portrayed Sidney Shorr in "Love, Sidney" that his character was gay. Kaleena Kiff portayed Patti Morgan that she's cute and adorable at a young age.
It sure was a far cry from Tony's portrayal of Felix Unger on The Odd Couple.

In that year
Charlie’s Angels last episode in June
That’s incredible still on television
Little house on the prairie still on television
The Waltons also aired its final episode on CBS, and the original Hollywood Squares ended its run (Peter Marshall hosted the classic game show on NBC from 1966 to 1980, and in U.S. first-run syndication 1971 to 1981).
American People was on t.v., back then too.
Who remember the DeLorean came out that year? How can you forget the show "The greatest American hero'. Also the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II life.
I was in Grand Prairie, Texas (a suburb of Dallas) on August 1, 1981 watching the premiere of MTV...so much for your "New Jersey" statement.
BTW, ee not only had cable tv, but electricity and running water too!
1981 I was a Junior in Highschool and worked part time at a local Catalog Showroom store in the Maryland Washington DC Virginia and beyond areas W. Bell & Company, great times, met great lifelong friends, I remember how crazy it was from Day after Thanksgiving to Christmas, I remember Blue Laws still existed in Baltimore MD and those stores were closed on Sundays except after Thanksgiving - worked at W. Bell & Company part time from 1980 to 1985 attending highschool and then till Junior year at University of Maryland where I got a part time coop job in Information Technology
Good times where we worked even during school and earned money for our own vehicles, vacations with friends, road trip weekends
Natalie Wood also drowned in the Pacific somewhere between L.A. and Catalina Island. That was in November 1981.
Also in 1981…

*_1981_* THE single best year of my entire life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The WHOLE year was awesome for and to me!!!!!!!!!! :)
Same. When I hear 1981 I just think of my friends and my BMX bike and hanging out at the roller rink after seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark!!!
I graduated from high school in 81'
The Pope being shot was so disturbing. and Ronald Reagan being close to being assassinated was damn scary too. the year MTV was born the real MTV . also all the hard rock bands like Van Halen ; sabbath, judas priest, had great records.
Married that year July a extremely hot day and still with the same wonderful woman and three children all grown.
Seems like 81 was just a bit ago .
Great year 👍🏻
Also in 1981...
The Great Muppet Caper starring Jim Henson's Muppets, Charles Grodin, Diana Rigg, and Jack Warden was released.
On the Right Track starring Gary Coleman, Maureen Stapleton, Norman Fell, Michael Lembeck and Lisa Eilbacher was released.
Also in 1981, Chariots of Fire was released in the US (September 25 in New York & Los Angeles). This film went on to win four Oscars on March 29, 1982 (54th Academy Awards), including Best Picture & Best Original Score (Vangelis). Its theme song would go on to reach the #1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 in May 1982.
I watch that too and still watching it
How I long for those days ! I was nine years old at the time and I remember most of these events .
Saw Rush Moving Pictures tour, and Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads.
Great memories.
Can't wait to see 1983! This was the year my oldest cousin was born!
In April of that year, Funk/R&B legend RICK JAMES releases his critically acclaimed, top selling Funk masterpiece, "STREET SONGS". The album would solidify his legend in musical history with hits such as, "GIVE IT TO ME BABY", "FIRE & DESIRE", and the iconic "SUPERFREAK".
We can't forget that on November 29, 1981, Natalie Wood drowned off of Santa Catalina Island.
1981 was a big year for my family
Three kids were born
Cousin Zachary (January), Me (July) & Cousin Natalie (October)
Billy Squire opened for everyone that year! As for the air traffic controllers, President Reagan fired them, that was the settlement! 😆
I was in my mama's womb for most of '81. I was born 2 days after the last day of '81. 😂 A whole lot of memorable events occurred in this year.

On Saturday morning, September the twelfth, 1981, Filmation Studios' live-action/animated superhero show "The Kids' Superpower Hour" (later retitled as "Hero High" on DVD video and pre-recorded VHS videocassettes) made its debut on NBC-TV.
@Delores Huntoon • My first Bride and I were married that day, she an absolutely wonderful, beautiful in every way 20 year old. A few months later her 21st birthday was her first day of cancer treatments at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester NY. We were able to celebrate both our 1st and 2nd anniversary, but no more.
I'm really sorry to hear about that, Douglas Drew.
My late dad turned 40 on that day, in 1981!
I was 24 years old, and I was working 💪a Full Time job at Montgomery Wards and Company. Montgomery Wards and Company went out of business years ago. I also remember the Luke and Laura wedding on The Soap Opera General Hospital. I also remember when Rick Springfield was on General Hospital. He played a doctor. I can't remember the name of the Doctor's name. I remember Simon and Garfunkel from 1981.
Wasn't it Doctor Noah Drake? I could be wrong.
@@MisterMikeTexas,
The name Noah Drake, sounds very familiar. The more, that I think 🤔about the name. It is Rick Springfield playing the role of Dr. Noah Drake, on General Hospital 🏥.
You left out the biggest most influential and global changing event of 1981. The release of the first IBM PC on August 12, 1981.
In 1981, Kiss released their next album which was entitled "The Music from the Elder." But unfortunately for one thing, it didn't turn out to be successful as Kiss's previous ones, such as "Dynasty" from two years earlier. Due to financial problems, Kiss had no choice but to cancel "The Music from the Elder" concert tours (both nationally & internationally) indefinitely until a year later retitled as "The Creatures of the Night" concert tours.
Before "The Elder", there was "Unmasked", which wasn't bad.
Thanks a lot, Michael Bacon!
The creatures of the night tour bombed.

In January 12= dynasty starring John Forsyth debuted on television
In January 31= Justin Timberlake was born
In august 1= Jessie’s girl became number one
In September 4= Beyoncé was born
In December 2= Britney Spears was born
I saw the. Stones in Dec 1981 in Detroit so I probably would have seen Prince if he wasn't booed off stage 😌
In 1981, that was a musical mis-match. Back then, Prince was probably considered another R & B or Funk act, and wasn't given an opportunity to show his talent. Mick Jagger probably picked him to open that show. Prince's day was coming, however, and his amazing talent would be soon be seen.
I had just 3 years old when Bob Marley died
I'm pretty sure MTV was on the air in Long Beach CA in summer of 1980! I remember it!!!!!! :)
July 3, 1981: The first NY Times article about AIDS, 'Rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals', was published. Little did we know the nitemare that would follow, especially in NYC.
And a young dr Fauchi told everyone that aids could be transmitted by just living in the same house as one infected.
IT WAS A GREAT YEAR ! MY FIRST LONGTIME EMPLOYMENT, 2/2/1981...I WAS NOT A RAIDER OF THE LOST ARK.
Sorry to correct you, but it was a Secret Service agent & a D.C. Police officer who were shot protecting President Reagan along with Press Secretary James Brady.
Reagan was shot also.
Don't remember much about it, I was 8. Just the movies and music.
I was born in 81 and never knew that was when the first space shuttle mission occured lol..Pretty cool
