I graduated in 82 and I remember all these very well. We were lucky to live in the 70’s and 80’s . They really were the best of times for my generation. America was in a much better place back then and jobs were all over, even in a small farm town I lived in. We had textiles, pencil factories and two large malls, (one has recently been removed but you could always get a job) a small country store up town, small ice cream and sandwich shop and every weekend the farmers would sell their goods.. Now that place is sad. We never had shootings. I do remember however, the Tylenol scare and it was a HUGE thing and it started the “seal everything movement”. We had great TV and movies and family got together for dinner every night. We waited to watch shows that came on. I was just telling my mother the other day how she use to require us to call her from the pay phone before and after the move at the mall and we would go to the arcade room and deposit quarters to play a game. And we got our soda from glass bottles that we had to return to get a nickel back. We played outside, went on a lot of great picnics, went camping, swimming and did not have air conditioning so we went to sleep with the windows open at night and we just dealt with it. We never had to wear helmets and padding to ride our bikes and we climbed tress and made forts in the forest and we turned out just fine. Yes sir! I would go back and do it again if I could. We were very lucky to have lived then. It truly was a much better time not only for me, but for our country. My first job was at a mall working for McDonald’s and then the Gap. Dec. 31, 1985. The day Rick Nelson and his entire SCB band perished in a burning plane. One of the most underrated, influential singers/songwriters of his time. RIP

I was 8 years old. I watched the Golden Girls even though I was too young to understand some of the jokes. They had such chemistry and I loved watching!
I'm only a year older than you. When I was a kid, I loved spending the night with my favorite aunt (who passed away in August of 2014). My aunt and I would do a snacking tray, and one of the shows we watched while we had our snacking tray was "The Golden Girls". With all four of the main cast members from that show in heaven now, I figure that Rose is boring them with another St. Olaf story, Sophia is starting off a sentence with "Picture it, Sicily...(fill in the year)", Dorothy is shaking her head in embarrassment, and Blanche is fantasizing about spending a night in the sack with some big-time male celebrity.

1985 was a watershed year. After working in Minneapolis/St. Paul for 13 years I got laid off on the railroad but was able to transfer to another locomotive shop in western Nebraska. The job was the same but the lifestyle was like walking into another world.
Wow, I remember all of those! In fact, my husband and I went on our first date to see Back to the Future. We also bought our Nintendo unit right after we got married in 1987. We would kind of race each other home to get to the game first 😄. Golden Girls was one of my favorite shows and I loved The Color Purple. I never wore my seat belt before the law came into effect here, but a year before it did I fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a ditch narrowly missing a large oak tree. For some unknown reason I had put my seatbelt on about 30 minutes beforehand. Needless to say, I was all for the law where many others protested. Thanks for the memories
The premiere of The Golden Girls was actually the #1 show of the week, bringing in a 25.0/43 rating/share. It actually pushed The Cosby Show to second place for the week, which had a 24.6/40 rating/share. 227 premiered right after The Golden Girls and it ranked third for the week, with a 23.8/40 rating/share.
One of the things I remember about the mid 80's was that car technology was rapidly changing. For example in 1985, you could get a Chevy Cavalier with modern front wheel drive and a fuel-injected engine, or you could get an old-school Chevy Caprice with rear wheel drive and a carbureted V8. '85 was a mix of old and new in the automotive world
Isuzu Pickups had carbs in 1994!!! My 1989 Cadillac Brougham was a full frame RWD with a carb (Technically it's related to the old RWD Caprice you mentioned, So no surprise, I guess)

1985 was a great year for me. My best friend had a girlfriend, at the time, that I got along very well with. The three of us had great times together. The sad thing was, they broke up, the following year, on Valentine's Day, Friday, February 14, 1986.

For us, 1985 was the year of our big family move. I've never driven on any of Route 66, and never knew that it started or ended in Chicago. I always assumed it went straight across the Southwest, and maybe into Missouri or somewhere. I'll have to look it up. I love the "Back to the Future" movies.
1985, the year I graduated senior high school in Washington, D.C. The music, the best damn music! No problem mentioning a ship wreck....and that might have been the most lucrative find of all time. But on September 1st 1985 the location of the most famous ship wreck of all time was made by Dr. Robert Ballard in the North Atlantic south of the Grand Banks. It was the first time in 73 years anyone had seen the legendary R.M.S. Titanic!
A few memories of 1985 come to mind. One of the more vivid ones was the introduction of New Coke and what an uproar that caused. I was glad when the original formula came back a couple months later. That was also the year when Motley Crue released their landmark album Theatre Of Pain, and I remember hearing their cover of "Smokin' In The Boys Room" all over FM radio. By the start of that year, I was all about a certain toy line we all know and love -- The Transformers. I got my first 3 Transformers the previous x-mas of 1984, and 1985 added more robots to my collection, most notably the Aerialbots gift pack which I found under the x-mas tree that year. Fall of 1985 marked the start of 8th grade, so it wouldn't be too much longer before I entered that awkward transition phase between kid and teenager. That said, 1985 was arguably the last year I felt that real visceral sense of joy and care-free happiness that we all feel as kids before the oncoming responsibilities of growing up eventually squash that out. Oh, and before I forget, for those of us who grew up in the southern New Jersey / Philly area, 1985 I believe was the year that marked the debut of a late-night show on NBC called Saturday Night Dead that aired on Sunday mornings at 1 AM right after Saturday Night Live was over. Stella, the host of the show and self-proclaimed "maneater of Manayunk", was sort of like an Elvira / Svengoolie knock-off who performed goofy skits and introduced corny b-movie horror flicks. I saw quite a few goofy horror movies on that show that I haven't seen since, that is of course if I dared to stay up that late! God bless 1985 and all the awesome memories that came with it!
It seems like the 1980's was a combination decade, a modern time that progressed, yet was still grounded in values of the past. After that, the foundation got shaky, then collapsed, and we're left with the mess we have today.
80s was the last great decade in America. Values have been lost since then. This is why so many people want to make America great again… it’s not political.
How did you forget Live Aid on July 13? It was the biggest concert of the year, broadcast around the world & the first simultaneous transatlantic concert, taking place in both London & Philadelphia. That game sucked!!! I was a huge Cardinals fan and as I remember the Royals beat the Cards about 11-0 or so? I can never forgive the Royals for beating my Cards in that series. lol
@@ShelbyFarrow That Denkinger call still pisses me off! I live about 28 miles from StL. Life long Cards fan.
In 1985 I was 17 years old. Dang. I feel old.
Hello 👋🏿how are you doing?
Like many here, I graduated high school in 1985. What a decade. What a year 🥰🤗
Hello 👋🏿how are you doing?
1985 I was in the army stationed at Ft Benning, Georgia. Those were the days!
I was 13 in Manchester Georgia, we watched back to the future at the Columbus square mall theater
I was born and raised in Phenix City, Ala. Right across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, GA and Ft. Benning. Thank you for your service!
@@ponolovefarms3926 Have plenty of good memories of Columbus Square Mall and the theater, I was born and raised in Phenix City, AL right across the river. Now live in the Florida panhandle.
THE YEAR I ENTERED THE WORLD 🌎💅🏽 AYEEE A STAR ⭐️ IS BORN 12-4-1985🤣😊🫶🏽🦋✨
I loved the show MoonLighting.
I graduated in 85. Started college that year too. What memories.
Same here. Musically Hall and Oates were the biggest band of the decade until this year, then they seemed to just fall off the earth.
@@timmmahhhh I remember REO was pretty big early in the decade too.
@@joeheid4757 yeah REO seemed to fade away the same time.
The weekend that Back to the Future premiered, my little sister asked me to take her to see it. We both loved it. I told my girlfriend at the time we should go see it, the next weekend we went to the same hometown theater and the line was around the block. I hadn't seen something like that since Star Wars. PS, I'm the same age as Michael J Fox. 😏
Love those movies!!
RIP BETTY WHITE
My daughter was born 8/85. Best year ever
My daughter born Jan.6th a wonderful miracle
Dec. 31, 1985. The day Rick Nelson and his entire SCB band perished in a burning plane. One of the most underrated, influential singers/songwriters of his time. RIP
Yes, I so remember that night. My Mom and I were visiting my aunt and uncle for the holidays back east and my aunt come out into the living where we were watching the TV and she said she had just heard on the radio that Ricky Nelson had died in a plane crash.
On my 6th birthday! RIP to Rick Nelson and his bandmates. 🕊️❤️

All of them of the Golden Girls are all gone
💔😔
WONDERFUL! Thank You!
I can’t believe that you didn’t cover the Live Aid Event held that July in Philadelphia and London
That was the year I was a sophomore in high school. Such a different world back then.
Same... I am 52. Nor tty hern Rural life. , swimming in rivers, camping out on weed him . No phones, free SG on to really err enjoy summers out if school. 87 grad
@@dustbunee2007 Aw... I love your thoughts on the girls being together in Heaven! I bet they're eating cheesecake too! Your memory of watching the Golden Girls with your aunt is so sweet 💖💕
Smack dab in the middle 80s...and what a year it was.
I took graduated in 1985, and went into the Navy. Boot camp is where I saw New Coke first time. Things were better back then. Since then I have lost many loved ones , I have seen the decline of our country, and Social Media destroy and divide our country. Wish it was 1985 again, willing to go through boot camp all over again
Thank you. I really appreciate your "events of the year' videos.
A young lady with whom I went to school was among those who perished in that December 12th Arrow Air crash. Her name was Virginia Word.
❤️
Fun times back then . I was 13 years old. barely a teen. Wrestlemania was the first major wrestling event that changed the landscape in the sport. The national wrestling alliance had Starccade before but it wasn't watched by many. the music ; the movies wow . back to the future . the golden girls all are no longer with us. RIP Betty white

It was a wonderful year, I remember all of it.
I have to say that the Year 1985, is my second favorite year of my life...so far.
What’s your favorite
My guess is 1992.
1985 was a watershed year. After working in Minneapolis/St. Paul for 13 years I got laid off on the railroad but was able to transfer to another locomotive shop in western Nebraska. The job was the same but the lifestyle was like walking into another world.
I wish these were way longer, I wish the 80’s were much longer too, what blast we had 🐾✌️🇺🇸
Hello 👋🏿how are you doing?
the best thing in 1985 was Huey Lewis rowing a boat singing happy to be Stuck with You. That about summed up the whole decade
1985 is repeating. Katie bush song topping the charts and top gun is a top movie.
And gm has been going down hill since.
@@daleolson3506 As has ALMOST every car company. I would not buy those former "paragons" of durability (ANY European make, MB Volkswagen, Audi, Volvo... IS OFF my list!) Only (certain) American and Asian makes are left on it. (Ok, Mainly FORD for trucks, and Toyota/Lexus for cars....) If someone GAVE me a new Mercedes or Audi or BMW, TOMMOROW morning, My ass is trading that crap for a Lexus by Noon.
We transferred to Hawaii in 1984 and in 1985 I was hired on as a civil service nurse in TAMC OR working with anesthesia. It was the best job of my career! HI is my favorite place and I hated leaving it. Husband was retiring and he wanted to come home. Up north where it was crazy cold and had snow!! Ugh!!
I remember 1985 I was in highschool it was the best times ever
Great year and times. Graduated H.S. in June 85. Both parents alive and grandparents. No cell phones. Cool cars like Irocs and vette were restyled a year earlier. Best decade many would agree👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Also in 1985…
Time Machine, hosted by John Davidson premiered on NBC.
Small Wonder premiered in Syndication.
Star Games premiered in Syndication.
1985 i was 23 and married and in the Army, wish i could go back!
I was 30. It was indeed a very colorful year. It was full steam ahead.
Very nice & well made episode.
My mother LOVED watching the Golden Girls. I never understood why those ladies went to bed at night in full makeup.
Wow I did not realize all this stuff happened the year I was born. I am proud to be born in 1985 February that is.
in my mind 1985 was 3 days ago but this shows how time just speeds bye, kind of sad, actually.but i do remember🤔
1985 also saw the first AIDS drama on TV_ "An Early Frost' with Aidan Quinn, Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazarra and Silvia Sydney. Still one of the best AIDS films of all time.
high school grad year. joy!
The year kids were introduced to Kidsongs and relieved that the adults on Sesame Street believed that Snuffy was real.
moonlighting was great
I was in 2nd grade back in 1985, I wish I could go back to that era...
Golden Girls premiered the day after Super Mario Bros released in Japan.
I was 20 in 1985, those were really such great times. Back to the Future just seemed like such a cool movie when it came out. Funny I am watching Golden Girls re-runs on Disney + and was amazed Betty White was 99, sad she did not quite make it to 100, RIP Betty.
Also in 1985…
Nickelodeon launched Nick at Nite, a nighttime program service for classic TV reruns.
I miss Nick at Nite.
The program service is originally known as "Nickelodeon presents Nick at Nite" during its early years.
Here is the first-ever Nick at Nite program lineup on weeknights:
8 pm ET/PT - Dennis the Menace
8:30 pm ET/PT - The Donna Reed Show
9 pm ET/PT - The Nick at Nite Movie
11 pm ET/PT - Route 66
If there is anything that I got wrong, please tell me about it, and I will gladly fix it.
Thank you.
We love the old Nick at Nite the way it was!
I get my kicks on route 66.
1985 was a great year for me.
My best friend had a girlfriend, at the time, that I got along very well with. The three of us had great times together.
The sad thing was, they broke up, the following year, on Valentine's Day, Friday, February 14, 1986.
I wish I could get a Delorean complete with a Mr. Fusion, set it to 1985, and destroy it upon arrival. I’d love to see my family again all younger, healthier, and happier. It just seems like such a better time.
Damn best year ever in the history of the human race.
The year I graduated from high school!
📌I was 10 years old, and I would pay a fortune to go back in time only if you all were there to share it with me!🤸🏽♂️🎈
Graduated high school that year. Lived a block away from Route 66 (Foothill Blvd in Upland, CA).
I was in the military in Europe in 85. Pretty much missed everything.
For us, 1985 was the year of our big family move. I've never driven on any of Route 66, and never knew that it started or ended in Chicago. I always assumed it went straight across the Southwest, and maybe into Missouri or somewhere. I'll have to look it up. I love the "Back to the Future" movies.
Turned 17 in 1985. Finally learned how to drive and got my license. Started my Senior yr in high school. Hated the new Coke. 🤢🤬.
1985, the year I graduated senior high school in Washington, D.C. The music, the best damn music! Nothing like the 80's movies, music, aerobics exercise with leg warmers and tight leotards that women would wear, neon color hair. Surprised this video didn't speak of the music scene. ⚡⚡⚡⚡🤾🏻♂️🤸🏽♀️🤸🏻♂️⚡⚡⚡
tears....I had my whole life ahead of me....what happened! If your young and reading this, go grab the world by the balls and make your mark! DON"T wait just DO IT!!! Oh, and SAVE every penny you can.
10 years old watching the goonies and back to the future.
I began kindergarten in 1985! 😂 Time was so much different and simpler than it is now...
"Desperately Seeking Susan". Separated, moved from ennui in Los Angeles to new beginnings in Boston. "My Life as as Dog"
Titanic!
Thanks for mentioning this, I was going to if no one else did.
Big time
Nice to see what was going on the year I was born....
ahhh 1985 I was graduating from liberty Blvd. elementary school in South Gate CA. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
I Remember on Saturday night we use to Watch 227 and the Golden girls.
How did you forget Live Aid on July 13? It was the biggest concert of the year, broadcast around the world & the first simultaneous transatlantic concert, taking place in both London & Philadelphia. Phil Collins even did a stunt playing in London, then hopped on the Concorde and flew to Philly to perform there as well.
Yes, I wondered why he left the Live Aid concert out, that was such a significant event to happen that year.
One of the most significant events of the century, and it is missing! 🤔
