NADU GOES EMPTY! Modern Nadu, Winged Wisdom Chord Combo. Thassa's Oracle Springheart Nantuko MTG MH3

- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Modern league with Nadu Chord Combo, a dedicated Thassa's Oracle combo build of Nadu that made Top 8 in the SCG Vegas 5K, a league sponsored by Patreon subscriber Brendan. Nadu, Winged Wisdom from Modern Horizons 3 is a powerful draw engine with cards like Shuko. But with a little help from creature-generating permanents like Springheart Nantuko, it goes from a draw engine to "draw your whole deck." This build goes in on a high density of blue value creatures like Ice-Fang Coatl and Coiling Oracle to dig through the deck, add bodies for Nadu, AND turn on Flare of Denial, the powerful new free counterspell. Nadu goes empty! MTG MH3

Updates on this deck from practical experience:
I played 2 tournaments this past weekend with this deck. I won an Apex Invitational Qualifier on Saturday, then made updates to fix some of the problems I observed, and went 1-2 in the Modern seat of a team event on Sunday.
Despite this good league and winning a tournament, I think this deck is a mess. It's a busted engine held together by Scotch tape and bubble gum.
Having 8 UG-cost creatures in the deck that also plays 4 Urza's Saga is rough. I tried to smooth that out with Noble Hierarch instead of Halfling so you can actually curve out, but Hierarch dying to Bowmasters, Wrenn and Six, and Lava Dart is disqualifying in Modern (I still like Hierarch for Legacy builds).
If you don't try to support Flare of Denial then you don't need the awkward-costed creatures. Without Coatl you don't need 5 basics. Just building Nadu into a different shell opens up those 8 creature slots, the 4 Flare slots, and 5 slots to improve your mana base.
I'm excited to see where these lists go!
Is guided goose playable in modern? It's the only 1-cost 2+ toughness creature that adds mana without involving another creature and isn't named delighted halfling.
Yup. As this video shows, any aggro-control deck with interaction can break up the combo synergies as Scam did here. This is busted if people try to pass each other in the night. Otherwise, there re realities to consider. Flare belongs in a deck with critical mass of blue creatures such as Merfolk (or new blue creature brews...). Yet Flare is great here once you've started popping off, though that's the definition of win-more.
So excited to see you brewing in Bant again. It feels like coming home, and it’s a real pleasure to watch you pilot these decks. Good luck in the next several weeks and happy early nuptials!
I think dedicated bant with en Kor might be the way
@BoshNRoll you mentioned cutting safekeeper, it is a fine one drop but it is part of the combo loop where if you can't get double blue out of the deck you sac your lands to the safekeeper and endurance them back.
*Me:* Hey, BoshNRoll, how many cards are left in your library?
*BoshNRoll:* Nadu
5:15 springheart nantuko enchanting itself has strong "obama gives a medal to himself" meme vibes xD
The only problem with this deck is when I draw a good opening hand, but then struggle with it and then I end up Nadu-ing it.
*BoshNRoll:* Can't Thoughseize the top of the deck!
*Mill Players:* And I took that as a personal challenge.
Lantern players: That's all I do
Mill just Hymns the deck. Lantern Control is one that thoughtseizes the deck.
The safekeeper is also another combo piece you can cord for, if you are short on mana you can cord it out and sac lands to go off, its sac 2 lands per creature but you don't need those lands anyways if you can win that turn.
Shukoshukoshuko Nadu-tantan

Doomsday At Home seems like a decent deck.
It's cephalid breakfast that doesn't go through the GY
@@Dracomandriuthus cephalid breakfast is just doomsday that goes through the graveyard so his joke stands...

"It's just a draw 8"
I'm loving the tech, and the experimentation. I've been playing around in Timeless with Arboreal Grazer, Flare of Cultivation, Nadu, and Bristly Bill/Roaring Earth instead of Springheart Nantuko as a way to keep the chain going. I think the community will eventually find a way to make this deck good, and then it'll catch a ban, especially if it starts impacting time during tournaments. Amuletless Primetime is also an idea (with the above Grazer + Flare being a big portion of t1 ramp), and since Timeless has access to Field of the Dead, Nadu seems like a very cool slot in that deck.
Overall I'm super excited by this deck, but currently favoring landfall triggers creating +1/+1 counters and really making it so that it doesn't matter how deterministic your win is, you can still swing the next turn for most likely lethal, and you have the mana to just cast nasty stuff that you just drew. Overall unless you can stop Nadu it can do it's thing as early as turn 3, which is pretty darn good.
Nadu Summer begins!
Elusive Otter is one piece of tech that I've found in Timeless where Nadu triggers aren't so free. It can be a blue creature that sits in play for Flare and Nadu later, and has the potential to get your combo started/continuing. I have no idea if its good, especially in formats with better Nadu combos, but I like it.
After seeing the en-Kor is in Modern, which I had not seen before, and the MANY permutations of Nadu, I don't see the deck surviving. It's a Twin-esque combo with a MUCH more protected combo. The new MH3 set has made it so that Twin can't come back, and this is a good example of why.
54:50 You still have a small chance to win here. On there upkeep you can use Sylvan Safekeeper to sac your lands and get at least 8 more Nadu triggers, with a couple lands you have ground blockers and Coatl.
best line of the game "disrupt these nuts"
They made the breakfast combo in modern. And we have birds for breakfast, apparently 😂
Can we start calling this combo Continental Breakfast? it’s cephalid breakfast with landfall (continent)
Sometimes I forget Green Sun's Zenith is banned in Modern, anyway, I think Dryad Arbor is good enought for turn a fetch into 2 new Nadu triggers
Hell yeah we love contributing to the youtube algorithm
Is Collected Company out of style for these types of deck? I haven't played modern in a long time but the density of 2 and 3 mana creatures makes it seem like a good add.
you play thassa and on top of it you can still flash a blue creature and sac it for counter. lmao great
By the way, endurance is in the deck mostly to rebuy oracle against a deck that can beat your oracle.
Or if your oracle gets thoughtseized early.
You know, wizards has been pretty good at adding in the “non token” clause recently. I wonder why they didn’t do that for Nadu
I feel like the flare of cultivation base would work better in this shell with the landfall triggers and extra 1 cmc dudes for more Nadu triggers. The T1, land+grazer+land+Flare => T2 4 mana for Nadu + Shuko
it takes 27 creatures to draw your deck with nadu max. 23 lands + Nadu + Nantuko that's 23 creatures, you need 4 additional creatures to get to the 27 creatures that draw your deck.
less creatures are needed the more cards you take out of your deck obviously, and this deck does that a lot. the combo shouldn't need additional Nantuko triggers, though there is no harm in playing a 2nd one, but it isn't strictly needed mathematically.
"I have some work to do, this is just a draw 8 for now." What a disgusting sentence lol.
Thassa’s Oracle is an expensive date
in round 5 game 1 you could have passed the turn and tried to survive with a couple of safekeeper fueled Nadu triggers. obviously not ideal but it might have worked out. unless i am missing something.
is yavimaya worth considering here? it's def better in legacy/cedh because of the tutor efficiency, but the possibility of bonking into it during the combo and suddenly having 8 extra mana cuz you cant crack your fetches (life total or land count) seems like it could be worth. it even lets you run urza's saga if you wanna get frisky.
lmaooooo I see the yavimaya now 💀
I was waiting for this. This card is grotesque and on the level of Uro and Oko, other 1UG cards, in terms of dominance. Can't wait to watch this video.
Welcome to hot bird summer, how are you celebrating? I'm cracking open my "Bosh and "Brian "thinking about those beans" Coval" Roll" pack and smoking it up
no dryad arbor?
This deck is really sick!
This deck should be called “Nadudes” or “Nadu’s Dudes”
man they were really smoking that bosh pack when they designed nadu huh
I'll eat my words if I'm wrong, but i think people are severely overestimating this deck right now. It's been out for a week and modern tends to adapt pretty well to creature combo decks.
It's definitely a strong combo, but it benefits a lot from brewer's advantage. There are cards that just stop it and people still need to learn how to play against it.
Yeah I'm sure a deck that puts out 20 1/1s and draws their deck turn 3 is just something people need to learn how to play against
@@LarryActionGlass life must be nice in magical Christmas land
I mean the modern challenge results back you up, deck’s performance has been pretty whatever. Still very early on so we’ll see if a more refined version can perform better, but the current iterations of the deck are nothing special.
Obligatory algorithmic contribution
With nadu let's say surgically extracted, how's the win rate? Also rules question. You use shuko on a few creatures but fizzle. If you blink nadu can you re trigger your board the same turn?
Blinking Nadu will “reset” the 2 times per turn trigger.
I won a game with bestowed Nantuko copying Construct tokens after my Nadus got hit by Necromentia this past weekend. It's tough but you can still win.
Nadu is probably fine but Shuko is not long for this format lol
-Hogaak players talking about Bridge from Below, 2019
Nadu Is my favorite card from this set. I enjoy this kind of play style.
At 55:00 couldn't you just sac lands to Sylvan Safekeeper to target creatures and trigger Nadu?
He had already triggered with every creature twice.
@@Thomas-bv9pv oh yeah, thanks, for some reason I was thinking he could only target twice specifically with Shuko, total brainfart.
Isn't bestowing _always_ better than playing that thing as a creature?
Usually, but not always since it's a Chord of Calling deck.
If you are not afraid of swansong/force and don't want a reset option vs another 2 activations/chord
@@kylemcgrath84 Fair enough. But bestowing also makes it safe from board wipes and creature removal if played in advance of Nadu.
@@kylemcgrath84 Oh and swan song counters it either way as it is an enchantment creature.
It barely began and I cant wait to see Naru banned. That card is no fun.
Rakdos Charm is the new meta 🤣
No Stoneforge?
What are you cutting to make room for it that improves the deck’s plan?
You’re right, I commented too early in the league and didn’t wait for your comments in the wrap up. I’d never seen the Nantuko card, that really popped off.
Do you think Nadu should get banned?
I think they’ll ban the 20 year old uncommon before the brand new chase rare.
Ain't the flute better than needle?
It costs twice and much and can’t be tutored with Saga. There will be places where one is better than the other, but that’s gated by mana. A 2 cost card should be stronger once it’s in play than a 1 cost card.
@@BoshNRoll Aganist truth there is no arguments. The saga totring is a big one because one sidebord slot can be 5 copies of a hate piece. Asked because flute can stop so many more things and interect with free spells.
How long until Shuko is banned
Why would you ever not bestow? it's literally no downside and gives you an extra layer of protection against removal, I feel like Bryan misread nantuko or doesn't know how bestow works
If you bestow, then nantuko is not a creature and thus can’t be used for convoke on chord.
@@nate1004 good point. I feel like the protection makes it worth it anyways, it's mostly trivial to get enough mana for cord with a nantuko out
@benjaminbarbaro6040 Nantuko as a creature vs Bestowed is definitely a situational thing. It is not always better to Bestow it, just depends on the current board state/your hand, and the matchup obviously can take a huge role in which is more "optimal."
@@taylorbates4742I think it is better to bestow the vast majority of the time. When bestowed, you get the same landfall abilities plus an option to copy the creature, plus a layer of protection because if they kill the creature nantuko will remain on the board. What matchup would change this math, other than the chance that you need one more mana for chord?
13:25 the endgame of this deck is annoying.
I dont like that this card will give people the idea to ban shuko then itself because its new since a situation where this card and any 0 cost abillity will result in minimum draw 2 every turn including the opponents when possible is still nuts. Even with shuko banned later on wizzards could introduce some other 0 cost abillity or cheap multi-target spell that lets you draw enough indirectly. I mean even in non-abuseable 0 cost abillity land this card denies on-board trading by giving you back a card turning every 1 to 1 into a 1 to 0 or maybe a 1 to .5 if its a land. Answer before it hits the board makes it hard to deal with for most effects in the game and i think that is a bit of an issue, heck extracting it means you got it from the hand into the bin and then spend a different effect on exiling it and all copies but you still have a token engine in there to overrun an opponent who probably spent 2 cards or 3 mana to preventatively deal with it.
Stats are big too. Good for having it on your side not so great when anyone in these colors will. Anyway i feel like if this takes root as an archetype people might find a good sideboard option for it and the only awkward scenario is that whatever the sideboard for this will be too particular for other matchups. Like a super cheap creature only counter-spell.
Banning Shuko because it makes Nadu busted is like banning Bridge From Below because it makes Hogaak busted
Unsurprising to see you tear it up after the preview matches w/ Phil, but enjoyable nonetheless
With this deck you either Nadu or you Nadont.=
