    Morning guys! I'm totally gonna be late for work now but I just wanted to ask: to any of you watching who have spent some time in art school, what advice would you give your younger self? I'd tell past me to learn how to cook xD;; Thanks for watching and I'll see you in my next video on Sunday! Have a great day!~

      Draw more xD since I take too much time finishing 1 drawing. Wished I discovered that I was good in art a little bit earlier too, because that would of helped so much :))

      Biana Bova this is random but I’m stressing about this! So do art collages care about what classes you take in high school or do they just care about your art skills??

    • @Tran809
      @Tran809 6 лет назад +2

      Littlesmile 123 They don't really care about the classes u take in high school. Normally if u have art classes during high school, it means u know a bit more about techniques, etc. In other words they really only care about your art skills

      Check your ego at the door. If you made even one really good piece of art before you got to art school, that was likely dumb luck. Realize what one of my drawing profs told us: "You'll probably do at least a thousand drawings before you get a good one." Recognize that nearly nothing you make in the first three years of school is good art, and realize it's all just practice. Don't be like the toddler who is horrified when Mommy flushes his turd down the toilet. If your prof starts drawing on your drawing or painting on your painting to demonstrate something to you, don't get angry, because the drawing or painting was just a practice piece anyway. Learn not to think everything you produce is precious, and learn to destroy any piece of your work if it's no good.

    I am starting art school in a month and I am so scared. I am not A "talented" artist, drawing doesn't come easy for me. I decided on art school because I like creating, but I am afraid that people will judge me because I am not very Good and I just started drawing.

    • @ritageraghty4404
      @ritageraghty4404 5 лет назад +77

      Anita, people won't judge you, because there will be many like you in a same classroom.
      If you want to improve your drawing skills, I suggest practising lot and lot of blind contour drawing on old newspapers.
      Don't worry about prints on newspapers or the perfection of drawing details. Remember, you are only PRACTISING and drawing BLINDLY.
      Practise, practise, and practise blind drawing. Anyway, you are going to dump old newspapers into waste bin. If your confidence is severely low, still go on practising blind contour drawing. When you are finished, don't look at the papers - just dump them into bin and practise again. Repeat and practise umpteen times. Practice makes perfect.
      In blind contour drawing, observe objects like flowers, shrubs, old shoes, trees, etc, but *DON'T LOOK* at paper while sketching, until you come to 100th scrap paper. Do mostly outlines. After lots of practising blind contour drawing, your outlines will be bolder and crispier than before. Avoid hairy outlines as these deter your confidence. Hairy outlines are the kind that unconfident artists sketch too leisurely. Even Disney's artists' ways of sketching are all wrong as I had seen them in videos doing hairy outlines - they are too slow by old-schooled artists' standards. Vancouver school of animation is even teaching pencil drawing the wrong way. Prefer bold broad outlines to hairy lines. Tulips are good practice for that. Same with plant leaves of various shapes.
      Rule of thumb for pencil sketching, do all your *OUTLINES FIRST* and leave shading always to the very last. Why? When you make mistakes in drawing, you have only to erase the outlines, not the shading that you haven't yet done. Besides, you are economising time in sketching.
      In portrait sketching, start from the sitter's nose and work your way outwards. That way is *MUCH FASTER* than starting from sitter's eyes. The nose is the most central feature of face. If you start from the very centre (center, US spelling), you can work your way outwards and that was once the old-schooled teaching of traditional art from over 70 or so years ago. If you try that rule for convenience sake, you will quickly be able to capture features of a moving child sitter who won't sit absolutely still for you. How I know? I had done hundreds of difficult child portraits for clients. Starting from eyes in sketching is always way TOO SLOW, whereas from nose, it is much faster. I learned that tip from a vintage art book printed over 150 years ago.
      Practise lots of figure drawing. Get yourself software Daz Studio. That is FREE to download. It is an alternative to Poser. In Daz Studio, you can play with 3D models, get familiar with objects' shapes. Also, you can quickly plan rough animation for 2D, if you like. At Daz3D, you can download free and affordable models. Some don't cost much, as there are oftentimes good bargains.
      Start collecting boards of pictures at Pinterest, which you will need for spurring on ideas. Almost every professional animators have Pinterest where they collect pins and boards on animation, tutorials, node compositing, live model figures, etc.

    I studied full time, as well as working full time as a baker. That means early starts at 2AM, then to college afterwards. I would then come home and do homework. My only day off was Sunday, which was spent doing homework. I literally smashed every project and achieved distinction grades in every project. It can be done, it just depends on your mentality, how focused you are and how bad you want it.

  • @YellowMelle
    @YellowMelle 6 лет назад +104

    re: supply list
    Other than not knowing how college works (turns out that's a big deal), my second regret was not taking colour theory FIRST! That supply list for painting studio makes you buy seemingly random colours, and I got them all because I was too afraid to deviate from the list (you probably can!). If I'd known which colours I really needed, I wouldn't have been so frustrated and I'd have extra cash in my pocket.
    for curious cats: my colour theory class requested black, white, quinacridone magenta, hansa yellow light, and phthalo blue. That was all.

    I’m studying for art school, I have 4 years and my stomach feels twisted but going through your videos really give me confidence. No one in my family has taken art to the next step to art, which I am and my mom and aunt fully support me going. I’m happy I’m learning about these type of stuff before, so I definitely know what to work on. 4 years of doing art, both digitally and on paper and such, my story isn’t flexible but I know I need to expand and study more art, I have 4 full year to enchant my art to wow professors.
    14, I’ve had art school in my head for 2 years now. I’m super determined, and as a technical child I’m going through a lot of mental health issues, body image and while improving I also need to work on that so if I do get rejected, I can take it lightly, and a bunch of other stuff. I have my moms support, she’s always helping with art supplies and everything, I’m really happy to have a supportive mother right there. I’m going through a lot right now, but I’ve had art school set on my plans for the future, god am I scared for that 4 years to be done and I’m sending in portfolios, sketch books and all that
    but, by then maybe I’ll be able to stretch out my art style, painting and all that. Let alone my body, and improve my mental state.
    Thank you for all the art school related videos, they really do help.
    I know not to rush, to be balanced, I also NEED to start saving up, to work on my back and even try get over my shyness and such! it’s so refreshing to know these things, YEARS before hand.
    edit: also subbed!
    Quick question if you happened to see this. [note I’ve only seen 3 of your art school related videos so far]
    Do art schools judge you upon styles? From really cartoony- animeish styles, realism and all that type of stuff? what will we expect? What will artists like me need to improve on? maybe work on?
    as for me I’m in the really cartoonish style, I have a LOT of room to improve, but I’d like to know what some to most art schools will expect from students applying.

    I’m planning on going into college for art, for drawing or illustration, or animation. I was gonna go for film, but that sounded like it would be too stressful. Now I’m stressed just thinking about going to school, because I don’t have my own money. I’d either be using my moms money, or using my student loans. So I’d have to get supplies with my student loans. Hopefully I can. I’m also scared to bring my dog, because I heard that I would have to pull all nighters, or spend a lot of time away from my room. And he’s my emotional support dog.

    Your iPad story makes me feel better about purchasing a new gaming desktop pc and 27” monitor instead of a expensive laptop with the same specs even though it’s “recommended” to have a laptop for the “laptop program”. The truth is since I my classes are only 2-3 hours and my commute is 2 hours in total, I don’t see the point of having to carry a 4lbs laptop in my bag when I already have really bad back pain from a variety of issues. (Playing the baritone saxophone, working with clay, lifting heavy things, not stretching properly, extremely poor posture and unergonomic work environments, etc...)

    As someone who's finishing art school soon, this video is so true and on point... time management is everything. Tho I have a feeling my school is a bit more "old style", but it still applies. There were times I was spending around 12 hours at the studio, painting (we have little studios around the place for 3-5 students to work in, on higher years, you basically live there after the third year). Trying to do your painting/sculptures/whatever done can be time-consuming. Projects aside, plus papers to write, literature to read etc, etc... Friend and I were literally hanging out at my studio while I was working. Do your time management well, be responsible and TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF (and your back)!. It'll only do you good in the long run.

    My case with "not brilliant friend" is a little tricky, as we've been friends for a few years and we're now going to the same art college.
    She is moody, and quite difficult to handle and she does like to control your time table so that she knows where you are and when you can come find her all the time.
    Luckily we have another friend, who's my roommate, who shares my opinion on her and we're gonna "hold her at arms length", as the saying goes, next year.
    But I can count myself lucky that I'll already have friends at college, so that's nice!

    I’m already hunching over and having back pain at sixteen, great! I even impressed my doctor to the point where he asked “this should be hurting you a lot more” and my mum always yells at me to get straight.
    Sometimes I need to get up from my seat, get to bed and lay there before coming back.

    I have something, depends on where you transfer to though. If you’re applying to get into a BFA program right when you transfer, DON’T. You have a limited amount of attempts to apply and at Cal State Long Beach you only get two attempts to apply. The professors who review the portfolios want to see work from upper division classes already taken at the university, not knowing this I applied right when I transferred and used up one of my two attempts :( take upper division classes that mesh into the Studio Art major AND the BFA you’re interested in the first couple semesters there, get close to your professors, attend BFA portfolio workshops, work HARD on classwork AND personal work and then when you know FOR SURE you have a 99.9% chance of getting into the program (and you’ll know, your professors will tell you) that’s when you apply. Hope this helps at least one person lol

I know a few people who are dirt poor and are still able to go to school thanks to financial aid, scholarships, and having a part-time job while they were in school. Try talking to school's you're thinking of attending and ask them what they can do for you. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you!

    I just want to point out that each school has their own way of doing things! and as well as each professors have their own way of doing things. Some even have certain brands that they require, so I wouldnt go all out splurging on random charcoal or newsprint before meeting your professor and getting your material list! I go to art center and it is like this. You might end up wasting alot of money because you didn't get the right brand or whatever.

    honestly, while I definitely didn't keep most of the supplies from my first two years, everything i accumulated lasted me a very long time. I still use some of it, and i've been out of school for ten years. If you want to save money, I get it, but it's tools you can use later on. So don't discount it or sell it off just because you were frustrated you had to buy it. art school/being an artist is a pricey endeavor. deal with it and accept that truth. I get so annoyed when i hear about grown adults bitching about how expensive their class supply lists are. if you want something easy go into real estate or something dumb.

    I'm more likely than not declaring a second major this fall because of how useful both degrees are, but I am a little worried of my personal work dying just as a result of the mental effort Computer Science is as a major and the physical effort that doing an Art major takes. I also do commissions for my job and I'm just sitting here waiting for the next semester knowing I might d i e. Any advice or words of comfort for a slightly terrified sophomore who is probably in way over their head?

    Awesome advice. Thank you. I needed this. I love the cringy ice-breaker comment and the health discussion. Do you know anything about what it's like being a disabled art student or are there any you've run into at school? If so, how did they manage? I'm starting this Fall and I have a chronic health condition. 😄

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  6 лет назад +1

      No worries, all schools (including art schools) have some kind of disability service/department that can help students like you get accommodations. Before you go to school, have a chat with someone in that department, and they'll notify your professors of what they need to do to help you out (usually being extended deadlines and absence forgiveness). I also made a video relating to mental health where I talk about people in my life who have needed extra help: ruclips.net/video/eXw9lqF1iZk/видео.html If you need more info, give your college a call and they'll be happy to help!

    Any advice for trusting or talking to teachers honestly? I know it's kind of stupid question.
    I don't trust my teachers anymore and it's becoming a problem when turning in late assignments especially now that I'm going to the 11th grade. I know that talking to your teachers is critical and I want to reach that level of confidence where I can approach them and talk to them. I just get incredibly nervous when I have to talk to them about assignments, even when I know they are nice.

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  6 лет назад +3

      Try to establish a relationship right at the beginning of the semester. You can do things like ask for their advice in class and after class, speak up during group critiques (you'd be surprised how much teachers appreciate and take note of that), show them cool artists that you found online, or just ask them how their day is going. If you befriend them at the beginning, it'll be way easier to tell them "Hey, I'm having a rough week and I might not get my homework done in time. Can I show you what I have so far and turn it in a few days late?" Also, try to give your teachers advance notice if you don't think you'll be able to finish in time. No teacher enjoys being told during critique that you didn't finish and have to turn it in later. Be real with them and they'll be more likely to help you. Teachers are awesome and desperately want to help out their students by any means (I should know, I have this youtube channel for a reason xD) so just give it some time and you'll have a great relationship in no time!
