the superb quality of her plaster cast drawing and oil still life has a lot of to do with the fact that she came from China, where art school still put paramount emphasis on technical skills (life drawing and painting). Students who want to go to art school in China would learn how to draw and paint properly (in the classical 19th century French academy style) in studios designed to help students to get into art school.
Izzi Bb the problem is that there is a quota for applicants to universities so realistically there’s only so many available slots and theyll go to the “most skilled” artists
half-baked thot yea of course. But the point she’s trying to make is that people are being unreasonably self deprecating. Audrey is crazy good, but I’m sure she practiced more than any of us to get there.
I don't understand, these students have amazing artworks and they want to apply with them for college, how did they learn to do all of that if they're not at college yet.. It's just so disappointing for me..
practice, motivation and interest. if you like drawing cartoons and you only do them, then its inevitable that you'll only be or be better at cartoons than actual fine art like this (unless ur amazin at everything lol). she seems to have an interest in creating realistic things, different art styles, artists etc lol. idk how america works but in the uk i learnt some of these skills in my 2 years of a level cause i was forced to explore.. and doing my summer project for university/college i just realised i can only paint one style since i was lazy oops xxx
High schools in America offer many electives, also RUclips teaches you a lot, also internships, and general motivation and a natural desire to create or make your dreams/visions/ideas come to life.
A big thing sometimes is teachers. I had an awful teacher who only cared about getting things done, so because I took my time, she was always getting on my case and being really rude. Turns out I got the only 5 in the class but she never gave any useful advice. I feel like the other people in my class could have done better if they had a better teacher.
From piece one you had me say wow. I love the bust/marble drawings. They are so intricate. And your oil technique is amazing. Really really great work you have throughout.
Just keep at it, also have you considered taking art in high school or getting into any middle school programs because if you haven’t you should it’s a great experience
Wake me Up inside yeah i’m in high school art classes but i’m not really learning anything and i don’t feel like i’ve improves at all in the last year from that class
I love this People who show their portfolio act all humble and like ‘i dont mean to brag, i know it isnt that good’ kinda compliment fishing but shes proud of her stuff Also shes really prettyyy
Artists typically set high standards for themselves, so when something doesn’t turn out how they envisioned (which happens a lot) I wouldnt say they are fishing for compliments
The candy piece/second ctrl+v artwork hit home for me. It makes me think of my identity as a Chinese-American who has lived in New York her whole life and the culture I am so closely tied to yet so distant with. It was nice to see a piece like that, never thought about the two candies like this and what it represents! If I am correct, the white candy is the White Rabbit milk candy, right? :D I also love the way you color! And your art style is so beautiful, congratulations on getting into those schools!!!
same here, i was about to point this out as well. i really loved your candy piece- it hit home, those white rabbit candies are so good. a really nice take on how food can form identity :’)
Omg the asian candy and jolly rancher painting was so awesome, havent had the white candy in so long😂 and you’re incredibly talented!! Are u considering making more videos about oil paintings and ur art? I’ve been wanting to dive into that art medium and ur paintings have really inspired me, oh and of course wishing u the best at RISD😆😆
Wow your artwork is amazing. Also you're cute af haha. Watching your video, I honestly thought you were an experienced RUclipsr that had a lot of subscribers, but you sorta caught me off guard since you weren't. This is really awesome content for a beginner. 💕💕
I'm SO late but this is SO amazing. I'm another Chinese-American living in America and your pieces really were interesting. Reminded me of another Chinese American girl at my high school who had a similar concept of the two cultures mixing. She did a self portrait with pointillism. The black and white parts of the painting were what represented her American side, while the colored parts were her Chinese side. The American side included the American clothing and accessories she was wearing, while the Chinese was the pin in her hair and her skin. Very cool to see your pieces!
wow. you’re so insanely incredibly unhingedly talented. I. AM. QUAKING. The honor I have of being your roommate is next level. I have stalked you from day 1 and I feel like a fan girl. I literally don’t know how I’ve ever going to get in to risd when there’s gods like you there. Oh wait I’m here. But still you’re so incredible.
ok the later oil paintings are sO gOOd wTf like it's one thing to try to make something realistic, but it's a whole nother thing imo to have that kind of messy but gorgeous style. and everything is so creative too!!!! fjkslfjsfj gah
HANDS DOWN the best portfolio i have ever seen! I saw a lot of portfolio videos before stumbling across this one, and they weren't nearly as outstanding as this. Truly the best artwork I've ever seen in my life !
I will never understand people complaining about that they will never reach this level. My advice for aspiring artists it would be to really know yourself, and whatever you do, never stop believing in that person! If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will either. *_always remember: Great art takes hard work._* Art is hard, and thinking that it should come easily is a big mistake. Whenever I give up on a painting or drawing, I always look back on that instance and realize that my failure was only because of my unwillingness to sacrifice more time, effort, and concentration for my art. Expect on giving everything you’ve got to be great.
like pretty much everyone else in the comments, im extremely awed & ever overwhelmed by her talent and skills, but i think im inspired, too. i still have more than three years until i graduate, and although i might never be as good as audrey, id rather see this as enlightenment from a senior artist than jealousy/pressure. the amount of dedication and hard work audrey mustve put into this portfolio is just so amazing and motivating for me. thank you for this video!! your art is srsly amazing and i hope youre doing good at risd :) take care of your health :)
I'm pretty sure she studied IB Art, it is kind of the same as AP but much harder and its a 2 year program. Most of the international school in Asia offer IB program. I did the same IB program, and it offers specialized courses just like Uni first year. The main focus of IB is experiementing with your art style and encourage you to turn the ideas into conceptual, abstract pieces.
IB art does not really focus on getting better at art. We just waste time on making process portfolios and comparative studies. Some people in my class simply suck at art and it pains me to see the teachers trying to be nice when commenting about their "stlye".
@@chocolateegg7996 the course is almost over and I still don't have two artists for the CS. One is Mark Ryden and I need another. Audrey, impressive portfolio! I do love the the glass you painted, and the hands too of the woman, it seems so soft. Very creative idea of "Control, shift" and the Chinese/American candy theme, and the cultural theme mix! I was watching a RUclips video of a friend and yours just happened to come right behind it. Lucky for me! This was an inspirational video. Lots of luck to you! Excited for your future endeavors! Oh, by the way, congrats on getting the Scholarship. I'm sure, mama was happy!
This was so inspiring. I've been stuck on ideas of what to do for my portfolio, when to start, how to make it stand out, etc and this video really helped. Thanks Audrey and I hope you succeed in RISD :D
literally just subscribed but i'm so proud of you since this must've been super hard but i think you did a really amazing job and i definitely love the self portrait
Wow im absolutely taken aback by how talented you are! I'm actually starting AP this year and your work is so inspiring to me haha. What medium did you use for the painting of your friend and of your mom? I'm in love with how they look!
Jasmine Hong thank you! And I do a lot of portraits (realistic and semi realistic mostly) with different media’s (pencil, pens, watercolor, colored pencils and I’m also trying Acryl now to get better at it) and also in general I’m trying more abstract paintings and stuff now too with Acryl and I try to cooperate it with things like silicone or glitter etc. (Oh and I used to draw a lot in “anime” style too some years ago and I also love drawing (realistic) hands!).

Lol and I'm going into my last year of high school basically only starting to get okay-ish at art. I've been taking art classes for 11+ years now, and I'd say I only started to actually get good last year or so. I've only recently started oil painting and I still have a lot to learn (and materials to buy, I can't seem to ever have enough money to get everything I need, doesn't help that there's only like one art store in the entire state that only opens at really inconvenient times). I'm not getting into art school right after high school at this rate, but it's ok. I don't have the money anyways and I could always go back post grad (at least I think so). My country's education system doesn't provide any actual substantial art education-the accessible high school curriculum largely focuses on design for marketing purposes, and honestly it's a gigantic waste of talent. Ps YOUR ART IS SO GOOD LIKE WHAT TF AM I but I'll get there it's ok
Very nice. Great work. If you do another it would be great to see the east more than you since you’re talking about your portfolio and we’d love to appreciate it better.
I took to many art classes in high school and actually got relatively good and even participated and won some contests. But now, in my second semester of college and majoring in Engineering, it’s been about 2 years since I’ve even sat down to just draw. Kinda lost it in the transition I guess. But I love seeing people who keep at it and create such amazing works.
I think this is the best portfolio tours I've seen on RUclips I must say I'm intimidated I'm preparing a portfolio as well for college next year! amazing though ^^
