Izzi Bb the problem is that there is a quota for applicants to universities so realistically there’s only so many available slots and theyll go to the “most skilled” artists

half-baked thot yea of course. But the point she’s trying to make is that people are being unreasonably self deprecating. Audrey is crazy good, but I’m sure she practiced more than any of us to get there.

practice, motivation and interest. if you like drawing cartoons and you only do them, then its inevitable that you'll only be or be better at cartoons than actual fine art like this (unless ur amazin at everything lol). she seems to have an interest in creating realistic things, different art styles, artists etc lol. idk how america works but in the uk i learnt some of these skills in my 2 years of a level cause i was forced to explore.. and doing my summer project for university/college i just realised i can only paint one style since i was lazy oops xxx

A big thing sometimes is teachers. I had an awful teacher who only cared about getting things done, so because I took my time, she was always getting on my case and being really rude. Turns out I got the only 5 in the class but she never gave any useful advice. I feel like the other people in my class could have done better if they had a better teacher.

the superb quality of her plaster cast drawing and oil still life has a lot of to do with the fact that she came from China, where art school still put paramount emphasis on technical skills (life drawing and painting). Students who want to go to art school in China would learn how to draw and paint properly (in the classical 19th century French academy style) in studios designed to help students to get into art school.

The candy piece/second ctrl+v artwork hit home for me. It makes me think of my identity as a Chinese-American who has lived in New York her whole life and the culture I am so closely tied to yet so distant with. It was nice to see a piece like that, never thought about the two candies like this and what it represents! If I am correct, the white candy is the White Rabbit milk candy, right? :D

I'm pretty sure she studied IB Art, it is kind of the same as AP but much harder and its a 2 year program. Most of the international school in Asia offer IB program. I did the same IB program, and it offers specialized courses just like Uni first year. The main focus of IB is experiementing with your art style and encourage you to turn the ideas into conceptual, abstract pieces.

IB art does not really focus on getting better at art. We just waste time on making process portfolios and comparative studies. Some people in my class simply suck at art and it pains me to see the teachers trying to be nice when commenting about their "stlye".

If you plan on attending an art school the colleges take in account that your school didn’t have any art classes, but RUclips and books are really good to find teaching and just make art a lot, like over and over again. You’ll improve over time. and just be yourself, schools like RISD want to see you in your art

    • @MrRookitty
      @MrRookitty 5 лет назад +3

If there are no AP classes you'll have to build a portfolio on your down time. If you really need guidance and structure while learning, talk to your counselor about trying to enroll in community college art classes. A lot of high schoolers don't realize this is possible to do. I've taken quite a few courses with high school students in them. You can make a lot of foundational work for a college portfolio this way by taking the life drawing courses and beginning drawing courses.

I'm SO late but this is SO amazing. I'm another Chinese-American living in America and your pieces really were interesting. Reminded me of another Chinese American girl at my high school who had a similar concept of the two cultures mixing. She did a self portrait with pointillism. The black and white parts of the painting were what represented her American side, while the colored parts were her Chinese side. The American side included the American clothing and accessories she was wearing, while the Chinese was the pin in her hair and her skin. Very cool to see your pieces!

    It’s about practice
WHAT THEY SEE IN ART IS HOW UNIQUE IT IS
YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING SPECIAL
    LIKE MONET FOR EXAMPLE
    HIS PAINTINGS ARE Unique
THATS WHY GLING TO SCHOOL HELP YOU TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOT ART AND ART HISTORY
ITS NOT ABOUT MAKING PERFECT DRAWINGS OR PAINTINGS
ITS BRINGING SOMETHING NEW TO THE VIEWERS
ITS NOT ONLY ABOUT THE PIECE LOOKING “nice”
    BECASUE most painters paint well
But I think its something more
    ..think about art movements
Or artists like monet da Vinci
    Picasso
    ..
This is good to start with BUT CAN YOU MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT
CAN YOU LIVE OUT OF YOUR ART
    WILL OTHERS BUY YOUR ART
WHAT IT IS THAT MAKE IT UNIQUE
    HER PAINTING LOOK OK
AND MAYBE SHE CAN MAKE POTRAITS
BUT ITS STILL AS A BEGGINER
    PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT..

Lol and I'm going into my last year of high school basically only starting to get okay-ish at art. I've been taking art classes for 11+ years now, and I'd say I only started to actually get good last year or so. I've only recently started oil painting and I still have a lot to learn (and materials to buy, I can't seem to ever have enough money to get everything I need, doesn't help that there's only like one art store in the entire state that only opens at really inconvenient times). I'm not getting into art school right after high school at this rate, but it's ok. I don't have the money anyways and I could always go back post grad (at least I think so).
My country's education system doesn't provide any actual substantial art education-the accessible high school curriculum largely focuses on design for marketing purposes, and honestly it's a gigantic waste of talent. You'd see students that have tons of potential paint shoebox designs over and over, using the same techniques, never learning anything new. There are art high schools that I've heard have better curriculums, but they're elusive and largely inaccessible. But it's ok, I think I can eventually get where I want to go in life even if I don't make it to art school. And in a way it makes me feel a lot calmer- instead of a ticking clock counting down the days of high school and the whole race against time to become good at art, I have decades, my whole life, almost, to get refine and polish my skills.
Ps YOUR ART IS SO GOOD LIKE WHAT TF AM I but I'll get there it's ok

I will never understand people complaining about that they will never reach this level. My advice for aspiring artists it would be to really know yourself, and whatever you do, never stop believing in that person! If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will either.
*_always remember: Great art takes hard work._*
Art is hard, and thinking that it should come easily is a big mistake. Whenever I give up on a painting or drawing, I always look back on that instance and realize that my failure was only because of my unwillingness to sacrifice more time, effort, and concentration for my art.
Expect on giving everything you’ve got to be great.

Just a question for anyone that has an answer. Can you still study art in college without taking art classes during high school? I ask this because she mentioned she took art-related classes in high school. I want to study art in college but don’t have the time to take additional art classes because I’m in band and the school program I’m in makes me focus on STEM like almost 100% (thus my entire schedule is filled with STEM classes). So do I still have a chance?

Tara I’m a chinese and tbh I felt that the ads weren’t that bad. I actually thought the idea was cool but the execution was terribly poor. But I think we can all agree that Stefano’s racist remarks was the final nail in the coffin.

wow, these paintings are really good, but as an art student at UCLA, I'm glad to hear that you chose RISD, looking at your portfolio. UCLA art program is more conceptual and abstract based, and knowing RISD, I think you made a good choice.
That is not to say I don't love UCLA, I think its a good fit for me, just not for more realistic artwork.
Anyways! best of luck as you start college

i really wanna be a fashion designer but i suck at art so I’m trying to get good but I feel like I don’t have enough time to improve before applying to art schools (I’m a sophomore in high school btw). I’m taking an art class at school now but I don’t really have the option of going to a studio since I go to a boarding school and my parents wouldn’t be willing to pay for it. Any advice on how to improve?

Audrey, impressive portfolio! I do love the the glass you painted, and the hands too of the woman, it seems so soft. Very creative idea of "Control, shift" and the Chinese/American candy theme, and the cultural theme mix! I was watching a RUclips video of a friend and yours just happened to come right behind it. Lucky for me! This was an inspirational video. Lots of luck to you! Excited for your future endeavors! Oh, by the way, congrats on getting the Scholarship. I'm sure, mama was happy!

I'm sorry; I don't get it. Just about every time I see a video for an accepted portfolio for one of the top tier overpriced art schools (CalArts; RISD; NYU; Parsons; etc.), the portfolio is either borderline pro or outright pro quality. What is the point of entering one of these schools and going into Law/Medical School level debt for the rest of your life if you've reached that level? The only way this could be possibly rationalized is if one got a full ride scholarship.

aah you're so good! I want to apply to an art college, but I don't really have many resources available to me and it's making me feel discouraged. For instance, most kids have art or photography classes at their school which I don't have access to at mine. I don't have access to many supplies either because my family is tight on cash.
I have tons of art I've made as a hobby, but none of it is very technical or fine arts-y so I'm worried about my portfolio. Do you have any tips?

    • @audreykang7356
      @audreykang7356  6 лет назад

I think as long as you’re willing to put in effort and experiment and show the readers (from colleges) that you are truly passionate you’ll do great! Show them that even with limited resources you’re able improve and produce amazing art❣️

hi there - art prof here. just to let you know, not all schools are looking for ppl that are into painting and drawing - which she does very well :)
but we would not accept students like her at our school. We are looking for experimental approaches, different media, surely a canvas with fruit is something that makes everybody go - hm? what? -- so u can be an awesome artist without interest in drawing and painting. it is really more about your general gaze onto the world and yourself.
