Really, really enjoyed this video! I studied German for about 2 months during the initial stages of COVID lockdown in the states March to beginning of May. My then fiancée and I were planning to honeymoon in Europe, including a week in Germany. I was committed to speaking as much (poor) German as I could, but the excitement was squashed when travel restrictions were announced and we had to cancel. I’ve been a huge Rammstein fan for the last 6 years, so your videos are the perfect combination.

It's funny, because in English we have an equivalent of the German "stein-" compound adjectives that uses a bastardized version of the German adj. "über". For example, we might say "uber ancient" for "steinalt", or "uber rich" for "steinreich". lol

Thanks for this Dave, this was interesting and really informative 😊 languages are difficult to pick up just by reading/books as a language is spoken differently to how it looks on paper- it makes it more of a challenge. Not to mention dialects too.. certainly over here in the UK there is a different dialect and accent for about every county 😅

England. The only place where the English can barely speak English. No offense meant if taken. I find some English accents impossible to understand.
I learned a lot from this video. I'm an American who lived in Berlin from the end of 1999 until the Spring of 2004 (in Prenzlauerberg, just around the corner from where most of Rammstein used to [and some still] live). Before I lived there, I learned German from translating Rammstein lyrics word by word. I built up a good (but weird) stable of nouns, figured out some syntax, and discovered the, frankly, >weird< existence of separable verbs. Anyway, I somehow never picked up on the "halt" phenomenon while I lived there, but perhaps it's a generational thing? While I was there, it was more "und so", which I equate to the American "Like" (I hate both of these things!). In any case, it was very cool to hear the Berlinerisch stuff acknowledged and explained ("Was iss'n dit?" usw). Thank you for all of the work you do for us Denglish speakers :-)

Good luck with it. As he said there is a big difference in spoken and written language. If I decide to learn a language, I would first only start with spoken language. I did the same for danish and it works so nice. Pimsleur was the key

I'm curious as to what you, being a language teacher, would consider an appropriate prerequisite CEFR level (or other metric of language proficiency) of this particular content?
I feel like all these colloquialisms require a high command of German (and on the other hand, they are very common, so should you learn them early on?).

Ah Dave, You explain things so well! I have been learning Deutsch for a few months and never encountered the contractions. I figured there would be some, just like English has. I am now afraid I will never be able to speak it! Lol.

Also, I noticed when I try to speak Deutsch, that I too say "dat" as well. And I love how you say "something", as "somethin". Almost like a southern american accent. Lol.

Rammstein = inspiration
I've got textbooks on learning written German, but at my age, and being American, its super hard for me to do. I want to learn to speak the tongue of my ancestors so bad, but can't stand the thought of butchering the language 😥

You may have already come across the channel "Easy German". From what I could gather, many people seem to find it helpful, when getting into German language. However, learning a language without actually having an opportunity to really have conversations is a hard thing to do. Viel Glück!
Just remember that each region within Germany speaks differently. For example someone from Bavarian region will speak differently to someone from east Germany. Most German born natives will use a lot of dialect.
I studied German for 6 years in school. The grammar is what killed me, it’s so difficult. Such a beautiful language though and I really love when I get to speak it (I’ve lost most of it now unfortunately) Great video Dave, vielen dank 😊
Please help can you do a video on Lindemann’s translated books. I am hesitant to purchase the poetry books that are translated into English ( the only language I know). I know that translating from German rhymes into English does not keep the rhyme. Yet I see a page on Amazon showing the rhyming in English. So the translation of the poetry must be way off? How authentic to the German version would these be?

I had German in school as a child, and recently started attending German lessons.
It's Coming along pretty well, but I always get slightly terrified when thinking of actually speaking German with a native speaker. I can't keep up with the tempo, and the "slang" and colloquism confuse me.
This video is so informative and interesting, and it really helps to see/hear the differences between spoken and written sentences.
Had no idea that German uses "stone" as an increasing prefix, the same way as we do in Swedish actually.
This is so technical, probably a lot of unnecessary detail for someone just looking to chat in German, I don't think we heard enough of Till actually speaking

In Swedish you can say: "stenrik" and "stengammal"
"So'n" (so ein) in German is basically the same as "zo'n" (zo een) in Dutch. I suppose every language has these short-cuts.
"Kriegst Du" / spoken: "krichste" is spoken "kriste" in the Lower Rhine and Cologne area. "Du kriegst" wird "Du kriss" ausgesprochen. Also weder "g", "ch" oder "k". Der Laut verschwindet komplett.
As a Dutch guy, i can understand 80% of German when i listen to German TV or politicians talking etc. But when my German friends talk i understand almost nothing :) Just like in this interview. It's too mumbled. We have mandatory lessons in basic German in school, but i think most Dutch people can understand a lot of German because of the similarities to Dutch.
It's like English, there are so many variations.

Amphitheateater = αμφι= two + θέατρο = theatre who comes from θεώμαι = Ι see something from above (with a view). The word Θεός = God actually comes from ancient Grerk "θεώμαι" actually meaning the one who sees from above
Your explanations are pretty much perfect and your videos spot on, but for some reason listening to Rammstein gives me similarly (though not as) bad vibes as having to listen to Böhse Onkelz. It's weird.

I like his songs in German. His English songs not so much. His english songs sounds like something a 13 year old would write.
