This Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts (DSA) Vocal Jazz choir is wonderful. Mrs. Cheryl Valentine is their director. She is playing the piano and it was filmed in her house. Detroit has great talent, but the local media and the school system won't highlight it. But... Everybody'sComing to My House!
I can listen to this over and over and over and over again, and still sing along, smile and just feel good.
This rendition restores some of my faith in our future. Beautiful.

David Byrne's American Utopia brought me here. In the preamble before he performs this song he mentions that in his version of the song, the narrator is not sure whether he wants everyone at his house. He says he finds it profound that although not one lyric or melody changed, in the Detroit version it is a happy song of inclusion. He then says, in an apologetic tone, that the audience is going to get his version, "because I am what I am." The audience then laughs, cheers and applauds. David's face is genuine confusion, and he says "I don't know how to take that applause" And as an autistic, this is why I love David Byrne.

I applaud the message and social consciousness, but really, for David Byrne, sorry, I want the weird David Byrne back. Kinda boring for you. Yeah, I know, its selfish, but hey, I grew up with the Talking Heads and know how out there David can get, this is just, meh.
People mellow out as they get older. He can't be the same person he was 30 years ago. It's normal for musicians to "peak" in their 20's or 30's. He was 28 in 1980 to put that in perspective.
He has actually done some great stuff with st vincent and his live show he is touring right now is incredible. He transcends the idea of a guy singing with a band playing at this point, and I think for him he looks at it as a step back
Musicians dont "peak in their 20s and 30s lol. Thats ridiculous. Artists might be held to the mythic image they cultivate at an age when society views them as sexy - or most saleable. Interestingly I don't see much fundamental artistic difference in Byrne's recent output from the older stuff.
If you think he hasn't changed one bit thats fine. Just a little unrealistic. Maybe you're holding him to a mythic image you've cultivated in your head.
