thomas I saw the Heads in a 200 person bar in New Orleans back in 1978 and then 5 more times culminating in th Stop Making Sense tour. Until I saw Byrne on Broadway last week, that had been the best show I ever attended... and I’ve seen them all from Paul McCartney, Springsteen, The Who and Stones to Emerson Lake and Palmer and all the bands you can think of. No one compares to David Byrne with his visuals, perfect sound and sheer joy in performing.
Yep...another (very slow) time traveller from the 80s and I don't care how awkward the actual interview was, once the music started tit was all that mattered. Damn...he's still got it.
When I think back to Talking Heads in the late 1970's, and I watch David Byrne today, I am simply amazed. He was way ahead of his time back then and he remains distinctively different now. Even though I was listening mostly to jazz, folk, and R&B back then, I distinctively remember his words: "You may ask yourself..." and I remember that being the very beginning of music videos.
Whoever feels embarrassed or awkward at watching him needs to think... Why? He is comfortable being himself, whatever that is. The insecurities are a product of you and has nothing to do with what you are watching.
Embarrassing and awkward? Some seriously stupid comments from what can only be the minds of children. If you don't love this, I truly feel sorry for you, as you have very poor taste and a faint, limited connection with emotions.
@@MovieJustin you can’t just say that this wasn’t great because it’s subjective... not even to mention that they each nailed their parts and played them nearly perfect
@@MovieJustin the way colbert brought him out and made him genuinely laugh at the highlights mag joke was awesome. that is something only certain types of people from the same gen would get and enjoy like that. colbert had impeccable timing and it's clear byrne didn't expect it and loved the joke. david byrne is on the spectrum so there is gonna be awkwardness. think about how you to reacted to being diagnosed retarded and have some empathy.
Man, I love this dude. Saw him "live" several years ago here in SW Oregon. He and his band along with a string quartet, got a standing ovation 20 minutes into the show and everyone remained standing and dancing for the rest of the show. And this at a venue where people rarely stand up or dance at all except in small designated areas. But no one could sit. It was just too damn good.
Was that on the Look Into The Eyeball tour? I saw him on that as well and had a similar experience. If so - I can make you feel old real quick - that was 2001. I kept thinking of it as a 'few years ago' then looked through my ticket stub collection one day and almost fell over.
American Utopia , fabulously wonderfully. Full of love and joy and leavened with a heartfelt concern for all humanity and our host with the most, planet earth. I give it 5 Stars.
bpaak waan yes he was, but left when he as two years old and lived in Canada until he was about 7 or so and seeing as Talking Heads came up in the New York scene. He wasn't living in Scotland long enough for it to be the place that felt like home to him, seeing as he is living in New York.
Madaleine I’m guessing he has good vocal maintenance, because the voice is an instrument, I’m guessing David drinks a lot of tea and uses a lot of lozenges
Good song! I grew up with a healthy rotation of Talking Heads as a child, we also had Byrne’s Brazil Classics compilations of great Brazilian songs and it’s great to see that he hasn’t lost that same sound from the old albums. Listening to the song I was struck most by how great the bassist in the band is. As a true funk believer I always believe that, as Bowie responded to Nile Rodgers’ question, “is this too funky?” while making his seminal album of the 80s Let’s Dance, “Is there such a thing?” Answer: no; you can never be too funky. Glad you’re still around Mr. Byrne, we are all counting on you to keep on keepin’ on!
That collection is great came out well over 15yrs ago a lot of Brazil's greatest. I used this as my core for every thrift record cd store visit for those same Brazilian
Ronald Petrin might be more like 20 years. If you want a REALLY cool lesser known album with Milton Nascimento check out Native Dancer by Wayne Shorter and vocals by Milton. I grew up with that fantastic album and am pretty surprised how few people have ever listened to it. Straight from the beginning with Ponta de Areia and all the way through is magic.
Still creating fresh, vibrant and original music. His voice sounds good; he looks good; the song is good; the style is good; the choreography is good. Thanks to Stephen for getting David to be on the show!
Sometimes i firmly believe that stephen has this type of guest just to let us know what he likes and to educate us on what we are missing ....and to also fulfilled his dream of performing with them...but mostly educate us !! Lok
See Rome 1980, not Demme, but the band was even better, if you can believe that! I saw them on both tours. Fucking Adrian Belew singing through his guitar....
I don't really get why people rattle on about Byrne being 'weird'. I've been listening to his music since 1980 and his absolute SANITY sticks out like a sore thumb. 'Idiosyncratic', yes, just like a lot of other talented people. This guy knows what's going on in the world.
I can remember watching “Stop Making Sense” at the Castro Theatre (San Francisco’s Landmark Movie Palace) up in the balcony with my friend Donna and the two of us dancing for the entire movie. I still listen to that CD.
Stephen and David: Went to American Utopia last night with my two daughters. Question: How do you get goosebumps off? If they don't go away by Christmas, am I have to dial 911? Could it have been organized more perfectly? Was I not entertained? Getting people registered to vote as they walked in the door? Senior ladies as ushers? Talking about babies' brains? We were just discussing that in the car on the way to the theater. Protest songs performed with class and grace. I couldn't have asked for anything more. We need to clone your show and have it magically appear every day for the whatever time is left before the election so we can disturb people's consciousness' just long enough to vote for the right person. Just one day of voting is all it will take to make an impact on changing the abhorrent system. David and Stephen...Spread your seeds everywhere please....
the production/lighting design from 2:07 to 2:16 is just amazing. Having each of the musicians move through the beam of light to highlight their face for a split second. Just such good visual work 👌👌
anymore the only place I see 'new' music is as guests on late night talks shows. None of the 'new' artists can hold a candle to DB and musicians of old. Which is kinda sad...
There are actually loads of great artists out there, one just needs to look outside the mainstream. All of the below are great current artists: Knower/Louis Cole, Kamasi Washington, Anomalie, Domi, Snarky Puppy, Thundercat, are a few names that come to mind.
I'm a big t heads fan and got to see the 'stop making sense' tour back in the day. I have listened to Byrne's solo stuff over the year but this brings back the fun, and funky dance pop of old. Something that has been missing for a long time. Love it!!!!
Stephen, if you had not missed the concert to finish your paper, you may not be in the position you are to be IN the show. Keep being the man you chose to be. Big love from down under ;-)
This man is my idol. He does what interests him and if you like, great and if not he will carry on because he wants to. Its an awesome creative push of an attitude that produces genius. I want to be like this.
Honestly, I've never heard of this guy, and I don't usually watch the performance videos, but I'm glad I did! This song is so enjoyable, and to see Stephen perform with one of his lifelong singing idols is an absolute delight :D
Awesome! I just saw American Utopia at the Emerson Colonial theater in Boston three nights ago! It was awesome! It's coming to Broadway this month in NYC. David Byrne is still the greatest artist of this generation creating art and music together so beautifully. I still love the Stop Making Sense movie and own it on DVD and CD. Actually no, that's MY dad. His name is Davi Vieira. You can google him.
David Byrne is a living art installation. Totally brilliant.
I'm in my seventies and I've been a fan for forty years. A supremely gifted musician and is not slowing down.
I thought it was just me!
He's an amazing guy! Never stops producing and what a talent! I love Talking Heads music!
I'm only 37. I've been following him since watching burning down the house in 87.
David Byrne doing David Byrne things. Expect nothing but quality.
Mig1997 well said my friend
I was expecting Nothing But (Flowers).

I'm slowly teaching my wife about David Byrne & Talking Heads. She's started singing his songs randomly throughout the day. 😊😍🤗😚

man, i love david byrne
Holy fuck...The Talking Head...that is totally rad dude. "We are only tourists in this life, only tourists but the view is nice". Mind blown.
I adore David Byrne and Stephen Colbert
LOVE it. Kudos to Colbert for going along with it. These kind of performances stay in people’s minds.
Yep - and without irony or "look at me, mommy" behavior - just becoming part of the performance, fully aware he is allowed to work with a genius.

Outstanding performance
David Byrne , one of the prophetic voices ,warning the world since 30+ years.
Love you and thank you David Byrne.
He has been. Burning down the house. Is about war. I know all to well. What he is trying to say
I CANNOT understand why someone would dislike this. It's David Byrne for fucks sake.
this wasn't great. more awkward than the interview.

This is what I expect from David Byrne. Was not disappointed.
I keep coming back to this performance. So wholesome.
John Prine and Stephen singing "That's the Way the World Goes Round" is one of the most heart wrenching things ever!
"See that Scott?!" Damn it must have felt really good for Stephen to perform with one of his idols, good for him
Not just that, but to become a stop on the promo tour and be able to give Byrne the Colbert bump. How's that for turnabout ?
Ha, and we do indeed "see that Scot" too :D
Who's Scott?
BAGAKOOS Watch the interview before this performance
IXCat yes I see that Scot. Good to see Scottish blood is good for something other than fighting lol.

The entire venue was part of that magic. Must have felt amazing. Do you know if it was filmed?

I don't believe so...not professionally anyway.

Hey! I said "several". And I'm keepin' this frisbee. ;~) Not sure what tour it was but 2001 does sound reasonable.
Love his voice. The way he moves. Everything. He is so unique. ❤
American Utopia , fabulously wonderfully. Full of love and joy and leavened with a heartfelt concern for all humanity and our host with the most, planet earth. I give it 5 Stars.
I love everything about this! A glorious gathering of some of favorite performers! David Byrne, Stephen Colbert... and I see you, Kimberly Clark!
Who is Kimberly Clark? Please tell me she is the amazing guitarist.
Natasha Figueroa The male backup singer (Chris) is a drag queen who goes by Kimberly Clark and does RUclips videos.
😉❤
I was totally watching for you. You looked AMAZING.
Yeeessss!! Chris did an amazing job!
Sounds like a Talking Heads classic.
David Byrne is a beautiful, unique genius. He might have just escaped from an asylum, but I'm so happy he did.
indeed....was my first impression listening to that song...great one...looking forward to seeing him in berlin...
And he's never gonna go back to that home
How did he get there? Did he burn it down?
well played,,,I salute you
It's so god damned good.
I love that! Go pops!
One of the most innovative and creative talents in any artistic field over the last 50 years. Truly exceptional..he should be cherished.
Beautiful. This is a great American artist. Congratulations from Brazil.

"As it ever Was" Amazing. I going back now to watch it again.
That last part made me cry lol It was really beautiful

That was interestingly good and beautiful. Digging the barefoot vibe. Also, so cool that Stephen got to perform with one of his idols.
Lucky you! They all ROCK.

a true musician who really tries hard to make art! total performance act!! big fan over here!!
Dunno who that female guitarist but she possesses one of the best looking guitars I’ve ever seen in my life. My goodness what I’d do for one of those.
Her name is Angie Swan. The guitar seems to be a "Kenai" by Knaggs Guitars.
Still got the moves and the voice. I love David Byrne. 👍👍
Love David Byrne....and so awesome that Colbert was a part of this cool song performance!
