Table Saw Fence Upgrade (You Can Do This!)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 июн 2024
- In this video I’m going to show you a table saw fence upgrade. You Can Do This! This will definitely improve the usefulness of your table saw. I'll cover why you should upgrade your table saw fence with UHMW. I’ll be doing this upgrade on my DeWalt DWE7491 table saw, but this could easily be applied to virtually any table saw. I am using a piece of UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) polyethylene to create a super tough and slippery fence for normal cuts and then when flipped, it will also be a perfect sacrificial fence for cutting rabbet cuts with a dado stack.
In addition to building this simple table saw fence upgrade, I’ll also walk you through some table saw tips and tricks.

Awesome idea. If I can find stock long enough I'll add 6" fore and aft as well!
Good idea!
Great idea. Uhmw is awesome stuff and would definitely make a great fence upgrade.
Thanks, Man!
I had some PVC exterior 1 inch thick by 5 1/2 wide that I made some fences with scraps. They have worked out great. A little cheaper option as if you have one length is about 40$ and you can make multiple ones. I made one for dados and another for everyday rips plus building a taller one now for tall cuts. Great video Thanks
Great tip!
Cool video I am ordering the fence clamps now 🙂
Awesome! I'm excited to get to use it for my next video!
Awesome video travis!
Thanks!
im convinced, great video.
Haha! Thanks you.
Very helpful!
Awesome. Glad I could help!
Good idea for a table saw. I like the idea of raising the fence. Thank you for sharing the details. see you later.
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment!
@@HowIDoThingsDIY see you
I like this very much sir.
Thanks!
that was great. Thanks man. Peace
Thanks, and you're welcome!
Very nice
Thank you!
My dewalt dwe 7491 has a fence curving toward the blade so this idea would serve me pretty well
There you go!
There are also several videos demonstrating how to align the fence on the DeWalt table saws.
I did mot know ARCHER was doing comercials now, ha!
Hahahaha! I've actually heard that before.
If the fence was longer onto the outfeed table it would be better for long pieces. I will do this to mine.
Yup! You could totally do that.
Terrific
Thanks!
Great video - I have the same saw and been using UHMW for cross cut and miter sled runners... your idea is really excellent. Question.. Instead of using this for a dado set, do you think by making a cut the thickness of the blade it can be used to cut a straight edge on one side of a board? Thanks, Larry
Possibly! Please try it out and report back! That's a great idea.
Awesome video can you link your dado set please!
Absolutely! I think its in the video description but if not, here is an affiliates link. amzn.to/3afB1qd
Love this! I’ve been watching fence upgrade vids all day and this is the way I think I’m gonna go for now.
If I do anything different, I might get an even taller piece of plastic (5”?) and then route some vertical slots out of the material from the top so that the clamps can sit lower, but allow for the rest of the fence to still stand tall.
Thank you! That sounds like an awesome idea!
Hey mate have you got some links I can find the French in and dado stack ?
I just got the same material in and there is a slight bow to it. Did yours have any sort of bow/cup/etc? I'm assuming that when I use the clamps, it should straigten out?
If there was, It wasn't much. But ya, I would expect that to clear up when you clamp down. Worst case, add another clamp to the middle.
Lol! Love that honesty.
That's all you'll get from me!! 😂
@@HowIDoThingsDIY Travis, have you considered extending the fence itself? I HATE the small in feed our Dewalt saws provide. I’m going to extend mine and also fashion a small “platform” under the fence to support stock on the in feed side. Saw it on another video. The guy was also able to support his sled with it. Just an awesome idea.
I think you're talking about an infeed table. There are a few times I wish I had one but most of the time my folding outfeed table is all I need. ruclips.net/video/kXzVISeXGpQ/видео.html
@@HowIDoThingsDIY yes sir, the in feed. There’s almost zero. It would be nice having a little more to register a solid beginning to longer cut. Imagine the fence sticking out past the table’s in feed. Maybe 6-8”. Now imagine a small platform the size of a clipboard. This would bolt down under the fence. The part that sticks out past what the tablesaw provides. Since it’s attached under the fence it both follows the stock being cut and also clears any stock coming in and simultaneously provides add depth/support. I’ll look for the video.
I'm sure it would help, but I just don't feel the need for one. Everyone has a set up that works for them.
Will the clamps deform the fence or, more specifically, the DeWALT fence?
I haven't noticed that. I don't clamp it down super hard.
I would also make it longer.
You could do that if you prefer it that way.
What blade did you use to rip the excess ?
I think I used a combination blade
I love sacrificial fences on my table saw, also love UHMW for very specific tasks (most recently I used it to create guides for 3/16” aircraft cable that was opening/closing elevator doors for a set). Just wondering why you would choose to use UHMW ($300 for a 3’ x 4’ sheet) over MDF ($60 for a 4’ x 8’ sheet). Same results at a fraction of the price.
I just liked that it was self lubricating and very flat and smooth. Plus, I only bought this small piece, so it wasn't too expensive. Thanks for the comment!
Very good. Short and to the point. It would be nice to also have a thinner piece of UHMW (maybe 1/8 inch) that could slip over the fence for those rabbet cuts. It could be screwed to a strip of wood with a 3/4 inch channel and hang off the thicker face to protect it. Cheaper and easier to replace.
That would be nice. Good idea. Thanks for the comment.
That's a great idea. Use the 1/8" to face some 1/2" mdf and do the same build.
I was thinking of doing the same. did you end up building this and how has it worked
👍👍
Thanks!
Not much work. I also made a ruler from PTFE, but the clamps would bother me a lot, because in this place I have a longitudinal groove for a stop or for making vertical grooves. It's enough as a minor improvement, but the skilled handyman wants to get much more out of
That's a great idea. Thanks for comment!
Does it with squareness and such ?
Can you please refresh this question?
@@HowIDoThingsDIY 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ sorry I was trying to do to many things at once. Does it help with with fence being square.
What is the plastic stuff called again? 🤔
UHMW plastic. There is an Amazon link in the video description. Here is a link to the material. amzn.to/3oh15oY
How long is the fence
I confirmed that my fence is 24". Good to go. Thanks for the comment!
Slow down! I still got to make the sled for my saw lol
Hahaha. The videos will always be there for you when you're ready.
the plastic end on my fence broke and im trying to find a upgraded replacement. i wishi i could just buy the broken part itself instead of a whole new fence
DeWalt can't sell you just that piece?
@@HowIDoThingsDIYthey sell in minute detail every part except for the main body of the fence and the 2 brackets on the end. I found some on ebay but they appear to be of a different style as they are not left-side right-side marked. I went to a tool store local to me, they dont sell the fences separatley, but i did notice sawstop's jobsite saw uses the same post & clip system for their fence as dewalt.
@Nderak Hmmm... well, I wish you the best of luck. I hope you're able to find what you need.
@@HowIDoThingsDIYthanks, i ended up cutting the broken part off with a band saw and inserted a piece of wood into the fence which i then can screw the mounting bit too
@@Nderak Great fix! Thanks for sharing.
Unfortunately the link to the fence material says “Currently unavailable
We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.”
Wow, really? I just created it a few days ago. I'll try to find another similar one. Thanks for letting me know!
Ok. Try it again. I just updated it.
@@HowIDoThingsDIY
Much better, thanks! Have you tried this with 3/4” Baltic Birch plywood?
No, but it would work as long as it's nice and flat. I doubt you would get reduced friction, however. I've also clamped MDF to the fence in a pinch.
Are you a bassist?
Not since I was 7. Most of my music is my cousin's. I put a link to his channel in my video description.
@@HowIDoThingsDIY nice! It sounded like they were home-baked tracks! Tell him to keep up the work! MOAR BASS!!!
The UHMW on Amazon is 24" long your piece on the video looks longer.
I think that is correct. Let me measure.
Easy way to tear your project down, tell you wife about it.
Ugh! 😁
Hahaha
Small tip: Dont wear long sleeves in the shop!
I couldn't agree more. It was like 40 degrees in my shop, so I at least opted for tight-fitting long sleeves. Thanks for the comment.
Ya I do the same thing when it’s cold, but just roll them half up the forearm to be sure. It’s something i teach the kids in pinewood derby clinics so they get in the habit young.
Great video man, I’ve had reservations about so many table saws because I just don’t like many fence styles. This type of easy sacrificial multi use fence fixes a lot of my issues.
@@Andrew_Sherman yeah, I always try to remember to roll them up. It's a huge mistake.
@MrKYT-gb8gs Yup. It's super cold here, but I don't do that anymore.
Absolutely right. I learned the hard way three weeks ago when my shirt and jumper cuffs got chewed up in the belt sander when I was using it upsidedown on the workbench.
Maybe that's where the term 'roll up your sleeves' comes from.
I t's not a RABBIT it's a RE_BATE FFS. A RABBIT is a cuddly furry animal not somthing made from a piece of wood! How can I follow somone who cannot even know this.
In America it is a rabbet. In other parts of the country it is a rebate. Thanks for watching and for the comment! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbet#:~:text=A%20rabbet%20(American%20English)%20or,into%20which%20it%20is%20cut.
Rebate is the communist term. Rabbet is the freedom term.
Agreed.
