that MacBook was clearly conceived and designed on the predicate that Intel would deliver on their promises for low power silicon and it was a complete disaster on that front- not even considering the keyboard. I have no doubt this product was why Apple ditched Intel and bringing it back with a more angular industrial design language and competitive price would be a massive success.

I hate the butterfly keyboard; I prefer more traditional chicklet style keyboards. The best was the older keyboards laptops had from the late 1990's until the early 2010's, they were amazing to type on. I would gladly take a thick laptop to get that keyboard style back. I am a fully tactile typer and I don't get anything from the butterfly keyboard because its the key travel.

Luke, let me tell you something interesting. By the way of you saying these are weak. It seems to me the last iterations were not weak. Here's why.
I - a die hard fan of this model - have bought one of these in 2019. An 8gb 1.2 Ghz m3. It was like new in a 'Refurbished' branded box clearly from Apple, I didn't buy it from Apple but it was clearly not opened, i opened the box and it had the proper like a new one packiging with the plastic wrap around and the paper protection inbetween. I had another 2017 Macbook 16Gb 1.4 i7 in perfect working order, absolutely no issues which I still use today. The interesting fact is that this new one - the m3, the refurbished one - proved to be, after I done some tests in video editing and processing power tests - about 30-40 % faster. Think about it: weaker specs, a lot greater power. I can stil use it today for almost anything and it does the job. It doesn't stutter at anything. Even heavy processing. It's a lot slower than an m1 but it does the job and I still take pleasure in using it. I take it with me everywhere and it doesn't disappoint.
Isn't it interesting that both are branded 2017 but the one with the weaker specs, the refurbished one is a lot faster. I suspect they had continued to improve these up till 2019. And the ones from 2019 - at least mine - is amazing and still very much usable and not weak - even today. Isn't it amazing.
I hope they will listen to you and us and put some apple sillicon in these. We the ones who like these will be forever grateful to Apple. They were not just not terible - the later iterations - but also, these are the most beautiful colest slickest model of macbooks ever made. It would be a shame for Apple to give up on these light very portable beautiful Macbooks. Girls especially and us who carry one with us very often will be disappointed. The other models will not be taken as often outside because they are heavier. Even if they are as light as the m2 Macbook Air. Not as light as these.
    Thanks, All the best.

This MacBook was the first to adopt the design trend of the MacBooks that came after it and what we use now. It has things the new MacBook kept and improved on. The 12 inch MacBook may have failed but what it set out to do lived on in better MacBooks. This 12 inch MacBook died so the M1 MacBook Air could live.

All things considered, I think this was a bit of a stepping stone to getting where we are today. But for me, it’s not forgotten. Sure, it’s slow as heck for higher end tasks, but for my fiction writing and average daily tasks it’s just so damn portable. I picked up a 512 GB model on the secondary market and don’t even mind the keyboard on a laptop this small and thin. If Apple loaded an M1 chip in there, and upgraded the keyboard, I would be very tempted to buy a new one. But having just bought a 13 inch M1 MacBook Air, will a new 12 inch become superfluous? Once we get M2 chips, maybe at the right price point with an M1 chip installed in the same form factor, I could see the 12 in model making its return and becoming the new budget mini laptop in the same way last years IPhone SE gave people a fairly decent phone at a fraction of the cost of higher end iPhones. Then I could see it becoming a potentially strong seller most people could do some real work on and even trashing those useless budget laptops with older chips at places like Walmart that people keep investing and reinvesting in as their daily drivers.

the Gen 2/Gen 3 Air that went on to sell like a gorillion units in the 2010s was ahead of the MBP until the Retina 13" Pros came out in 2013. For like a good 3 years if you wanted Apple's best 13" computer, with much faster storage, better battery, and a higher-resolution display (1440p vs 1280x800), along with being much much smaller, you got a Macbook Air instead of a Macbook Pro. It quickly became the budget option and then was allowed to lag, but there's no rule that says that Apple has to treat it like a second-class citizen. I'd love to see the MacBook name return and I appreciate the simplicity of MacBook/MacBook Pro and nothing else, but I don't see how the 13" MacBook you decribed differentiates itself enough (unless Apple also makes a 15" version like some have rumored, lol)

So I asked the girl what it was and she said it was a macbook. I was like “No sh.t, I tought it was a lenovo…” but anyways, I thanked her for the information and headed home dejected. And now, years later, I found out she was actually helpful and I’m glad I wasn’t rude.

Honestly I'd like if they took that chassis, cut the bezels to a ~13 inch screen, added a second port, threw in an M1, and just called it the refreshed MacBook air. Honestly the fact that the "MacBook" was the ludicrously thin one and "air" just meant budget was confusing as all hell. Sure, we know at this point Apple doesn't give a shit what things should be called, but I think it would be easy and make a ton of sense.

I'm a bit confused. Is Luke saying that this new "Macbook" would eventually replace the Macbook Air line entirely, or that there would be three different styles of Macbooks (along with the iPad Pro)? Would there be a need for three different models when you have the Air for the basics, the Pro for anything requiring greater capability, and the iPad Pro which can also cover basics plus offer the ability to write or draw on the screen?

the naming of it though. I feel like because apple has the "ipad" which is cheaper than the "ipad air" (which is thinner and lighter) they should have the macbook as cheap, colourful and aimed at students and the macbook air with a bit of a redesign as the slightly cheaper alternative to the pro and just lacks the m1x chip. I hope this time they will match the naming scheme to the ipad's one because it could be very confusing for the average consumer.

      Yes. Totally agree.
      Apple should fix the nomenclatures.
People have almost forgotten this model. It’s a good time to make it the $750 8/256 LCD sRGB “MacBook se” than make it a MacBook 13” to replace MacBook Pro 13”.
Basically like the iPhone SE or 300$ iPad
The best fix would probably be
      $750 : M1 MacBook 12”. 8/256 with sRGB LCD.
      $1000 : M2 MacBook Air 14”, 8/256 P3 LCD
      $1300 : M2 MacBook Air 16”, 8/256, P3 miniLED.
      $1800 : M1X MBP14” (16/512) P3 miniLED with 16c GPU at base price.
      $2400 : M1X MBP16” (16/512) P3 miniLED with 32cGPU at base price.

I don’t see why apple should put a 4K at 12” just cause justify pricing.
12” MacBook should be forgotten as the “premium MacBook Air with worse performance than the MacBook Air and pro” and reintroduced as a budget MacBook with worse specs than MacBook Air for 750$.

For me, seeing 2021 tech, When they release the next consumer Macbook, with the 13 inch screen in a 12 inch body, and expecially if they do the scolor schemes as the 2021 iMacs, I think they should ditch the AIR in the name and revive it as the Macbook.
