I have an old 5.1 AV receiver connected to a couple of really nice Mission floor standers, which realistically we just didn't use for anything these days. A couple of months ago I connected an unused Echo Dot and it has given the old AV setup a whole new lease of life. Totally worth doing.

Love your videos Paul. I'd like to see you investigate why most smart speakers and soundbars have no meaningful treble. I love the convenience of smart speakers, but their general lack of high end always makes me go back to my traditional hi-fi system. Even my £700 HEOS soundbar sounds boomy and muddy when listening to music.

It's a shame but finding a way to get a nice JBL inside would be a nice upgrade if possible. It's got it's place in the world but not in my house. If I had a sci-fi decorated office/studio like yours, I would mod it and keep it. That being said, I would just as happily mod any compatible sci-fi shelf item with a quality speaker system and be even happier. From there I would want it as a stereo format instead so on to another upgrade, leaving this tech behind and the reason behind it not being for me to begin with, lol.

You're right. This concept is totally nuts. You'll never get a decent sound from a third generation Echo Dot that came out in 2018. The Gravastar 's sound and aesthetics seem way over priced, for what it is. An Echo would have been cheaper with superior sound quality. How about trying the new Echo Pop?
@paulhibbert Have you taken a look at WLED in the last year or so? It gives you a simple way to control LED strips etc via a simple web interface and can also be linked to Home Assistant.
I would love to do a travel show with Neesha. We talked about it when we're last on holiday, I think it would be really funny and a great way to spend more time together as this current job still takes up more of that 'us' time than I am happy about. I also think about doing more mental health and philosophy talks, but that would be such a massive departure from what I currently do, I think once a year during mental health awareness week is enough for now. I'd like to branch into other tech like mobile phones, and cameras and stuff too, but it's hard to compete when you step outside of your niche. I've done unexpectedly well with projectors and naturally that has attracted more projector sponsors, so that's probably a good thing to have my eggs in a couple more baskets 😊

I use the Edifier R1850DB bookshelf speakers with my 1st gen echo dot. I am sure they sound considerably better than these speakers do for not much more money.
How you didn't get the idea of turning the echo dot into a top hat, adding a monicle and changing the dots voice to wheatley or glados from portal has hurt me inside. Missed opportunity right there

Also, if you added more bass to that contraption from Mos Eisley, it would be spazzing out all over the desk like it was on crack.
It sounds surprisingly good especially with an eq tweak,certainly better than an echo. The tweeter on the front and down firing sub work well together for a Bluetooth speaker.
