I have a One, and recently purchased a Model 12 (good purchase, btw). One thing I like about it is that you can, in a pinch, use it for backing tracks, and the MIDI out can send MIDI clock and MTC, so it can drive the delays or arpeggios on at least one synth (again, haven't tried it yet), or sync up to other sequencers. It's a bummer that the MIDI in won't receive these signals, though, as I really wanted to buy a second unit and slave them together. Perhaps Tascam should get on that, too. Really dig the track, btw.
I have an old Korg D1600 but I haven't experimented with it alongside my MPC One. It can't be used as an interface so I tend to use it for linear recording.
As an amateur with a single MIDI keyboard on Ableton, this taught me a lot about the importance of various hardware and how to set up your interface. At 27 I really feel the need to dive deeper into music making with all my heart and soul…

Wanted to share a story with you. I'm a singer songwriter who after so many years of throwing away money on studio time finally decided to invest in gear. Originally I was just gonna get an old 414 tascam and a boss 404 sampler and just find a good engineer to do transfers and clean up mixes. And I specifically wanted to go DAWless because I didn't want to go thru any learning curves with software recording. Went to guitar center in LA and was told about the Model 12. Then when I got back to the bay area, I went to another guitar center and was told about the MPC One. Soon afterwards the idea of pairing the two hit me. Wasn't exactly sure though how this idea would be received with others, but again I wanted to take a chance with going full on dawless in these days and times and seeing that I just turned 50, I wanted to use this opportunity to go back in time a bit to when I was actually recording stuff on older tascams and mpc in the 90's. Then I came across this video randomly. This is a confirmation that I'm on the right track. Thank you for this. And if it's cool... I'd love to hit you up from time to time on pointers on how to really use these two machines together to get really take my tracks to the next level.
Hi! At 3:00 you mention the MPC is sending drums to 5/6. How is it connected? I see only power and usb host cable in the back of the MPC. Thanks love your content!
Looking for a new mixer myself to go along with my MPC ONE and the Tascam Model 12 seems like a great choice. Thanks Tefty for another great informative video. All the best
Your vid's are awesome and I'm a fan. For anyone not getting your explanation on the Model D output I'd suggest they think of the Model D as a "player piano" that responds to a hole-punched roll of paper (MIDI) that triggers the notes.. but the output is 100% analog like a guitar, mic vocals, or analog synth. So, to get that analog signal back into a digital format (DAW, MPC, Model 12) treat it like you're recording mic/guitar. It's going to have to go through a A/D conversion to get back into the digital world of DAW/MPC/Model 12.

I think the delay comes down to the capacitance. In the end, the discharge of the capacitors result in a delay that can't be avoided without the risk of heat, if the discharged is allowed too fast. Sound, is still just electricity..
What is the advantage of passing audio through the MPC? I understand that in this case you can use MPC for sampling or/and as audio effect, but with at last 8 ms latency. Isn't it better to control external synthesizers from MPC via MIDI and run the mixer in standalone mode (that is, connect MPC to the mixer with audio cable, not usb)? I have no experience with MPC, but I am seriously considering one, hence the question.
Good question! The benefit is being able to split out the sampled tracks in the MPC into multiple channels. For instance, if I just routed the outputs from the MPC, then the drums and guitar parts would be "baked" in together on a stereo track. What's nice about the Model 12/16/24 is you have each track automatically setup as an analog mix AND multitrack recording session. Let me know if that answers your question! 🍻
@@TeftyMeems Yes, that explains it all. However, you can probably record external tracks on a mixer and export MPC tracks to a DAW as audio? Only in that case you can't mix on the mixer anymore, you have to go back to the computer.
yup, lots of ways of achieving similar goals. The Tascam approach is nice because it multitracks live performance stuff while being able to directly connect into the MPC audio routing. But yeah, could totally export tracks directly out of the MPC.

Hi John! So, not exactly. For writing parts, the Model 12 is mostly just setting levels and monitoring sounds. Once a jam or session has been crafted, we go about recording officially and use the Model 12 as a multitrack recorder. So we approach it as performing a whole song in one take, do a few takes, and assuming we got a good one, mix the best take. Looking forward to doing something similar with my MPC One & my Zoom L12...although I do not expect better results than your Tascam Model 12(less options but still functional). Mainly I want to learn to use it as my preferred set up for writing & a live performance setup. As always thanks for your excellent content & info!! 💯🔥👊🏼
Also I am assuming that I can use my MPC One as a ‘playback’ device of prerecorded tracks instead of a computer/tablet to use in a live setup. Having different tracks routed to a mixer such as my Zoom L12 to control IMO seems like a handy option.
Hey guys. I’m fairly new to music production so bare with me. Right now I solely use the mpc & make sample based beats (for now). I don’t even know if I’m about to make sense but here goes... I am wondering if I can sync all of the tracks that I have made on the mpc into the mixer & multitrack? I am super keen to purchase a mixer but for the life of me haven’t got a clue on how to operate one & use it with the mpc live 2.
My tascam arrives next month. Can you confirm that I can hook up my synth audio to the mixer, usb to mpc and record midi on the mpc ?. This would allow me to re record and change midi on the fly or edit the midi track on mpc. So far only seen examples using internal mpc instruments.
Here's what I don't get with this - why not just record the audio into the MPC as loops and then trigger as one shots? I believe you have an analogue mixer with the synths coming into the MPC. I have the same setup and just record my gear into the MPC in 4/8/16 bar takes per sequence. Then explode everything and send make the sequences into a song. This way you can export all the WAV files and mix every drum separately instead of being limited to 12 tracks. I just export stems and drag into Ableton. I guess the multi tracking at once thing is the only thing I can't do, but I don't really feel like that's a hinderance.
I can see two uses - as a multi-channel input interface e.g. for drums or anything needing more inputs than the MPC has, and during mixdown to enable outboard effects, for bringing in audio from MIDI synths, and maybe as a MIDI controller and recording the stereo result in the Tascam. Personally I export stems from the MPC and mix in Harrison Mixbus because much of the mixing I do in the MPC (or even while recording to the MPC) so the final mix is just balance and final tweaks.
@@unclemick-synths Yep, and I believe he has an analogue mixer for that first point you made. Obviously I am not criticizing his setup (its sweet) just wondering if I missed anything there.
@@landonh3535 it's not quite the same with a regular mixer - that's still only a stereo input into the One whereas the Tascam gives multiple inputs to the One. That would enable recording multiple tracks simultaneously whether that's to record a drum kit or to render multiple hardware synths to audio in one pass.
Anyone having issues with MPC and Tascam 12 where outputs 1/2, 7/8, and 9/10 are the only usb audio outputs from the MPC to the model 12? I just got my Model 12 and am experiencing this issue. Just changed my firmware to 1.30 and can't revert back to older versions it seems. Just looking for some sage!🍻
Does anyone know? Can you use USB B of Key 37 to *output* the L/R audio of a sequence? Asking as my mixer (a Yamaha MG10XU) has a USB B 2input/2output that allows for monitoring signal while NOT sending that monitored signal to the stereo out (i.e. this allows monitoring MPC tracks while laying down vocals, guitar, bass etc thru mixer into MPC).
Do you have a powered usb hub plugged directly into the MPC which is used for your Mixer and Midi inputs? Or are you using Midi inputs on the mixer and mixer direct to MPC?
Bought Model 16 in early July, still hasn't got one because Tascam quality control appears to be awful, the first one broke in a week, the second one came defective, it's the end of September now and I'm still waiting for them to hopefully repair it. Think twice before getting a Tascam, unfortunately I am not aware of any competing product on the market, a bunch of them do sd recording of just the master.
Very helpful video. Would you tell me if I can multirecord to the Tascam disc, using MPC5000 and Tascam Model mixer ? Using the MPC5000 USB out and the main outs plugged in the Tascam stereo IN's ? I just prefer to use my MPC5000 instead of buying MPC One.
😢 Hi, I have an Akai MPC 61, I replaced the Focusrite interface with a Tascam Model 12 as in the Akai RUclips videos and I still have crackles in the sound when playing. if I have the Akai internal interface in the audio settings, it's OK - do you have such a problem? How to fix it ?
I Got a question. When you multitrack recording and saving these tracks on the tascam sd card, are these all tracks recorded post eq, post fader, post gain, post fx, or they are just post gain? Really want to know it. Best regards.
For each channel you can set the recording signal pre / post compressor, or post EQ for recording on the Tascam or via USB on a PC. In the menu: "MTR/USB SEND POINT"
Dude, you titled. this is MPC one with model 12 yet talked more about all the other things connected... why not just focus on the mpc and model 12? most of us dont have all the other stuff
To be sure I understand - for the recording of the MPC did you use a MIDI out cable from the M12 into the MPC for sync and record the audio out from the MPC into the M12? When you say hybrid do you mean because you are a recording into the M12 at the same time you are recording into Ableton? I know I'm asking for too much but sometimes I wish folks would include a downloadable image or PDF showing their signal flow. 🤪 Cheers!
So unfortunately you can’t since the transport on the Model 12 from the MPC, so the Model 12 recording has to be started separately. The outputs from the MPC are going through the USB cable with the Audio Interface support from MPC 2.10. The hybrid approach is taking the files recorded from the SD card on the Model 12 and importing them into Ableton for a hybrid mix. Hopefully that clears some of the confusion 🙌
Cool vid!! - Have a question - trying other class‑compliant by USB (my Tascam model 16 shows up in MPCii), it like seems my Maschine plus is not connecting with my mpc ll? I have the usb conn. to mpc through audio device and it dose not appear in my preferences under audio device, humm!! Is the maschine + class complaint? if so, we can do a private session on how to do this!!
Hi Eddie! So I’m honestly not sure if you can connect the Maschine+ to the MPC. The reason is the Maschine+ would try to be the host, just like the MPC, so I don’t think it’ll connect via USB. You’ll have to stick with standard 5 pin MIDI cables for that.
I’m not an expert on d.a.w.l no next to nothing but never had a couple of the household the kids do but I agree I learn 12 and had to do things I like the new technology every time I try to use a W messing up and I’ve heard producers say if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll be overwhelmed with options and make mistakes and some people may use it for the wrong reasons change the voice or whatever if I already can sound decent with most people crap then it’s just my personal pleasure add wanna learn but for me it ain’t worth it
Just got the 16. Is it possible to sidechain multiple external synths to a kick drum sample? Can the mpc handle that? I tried without much luck. Would it just be better to bring all the tracks into a daw?
I'm pretty sure the MPC can handle a sidechain but I don't remember off the top of my head how to chain it 🤔 However, if you're ultimately gonna mix it in the DAW, then yeah, probably easier to just do it in the DAW come time for mix.
I have the model 12 also and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do multiple takes for vocals recording into multi track or overdub do you have any idea how to do that also is there a way to make the model 12 the master for timing so when you hit record everything records at the same time Or make the MPC the master so when you hit play and record it controls the model 12
Sort of off topic, but I'm a podcaster who is just getting into music (I'm learning VCV Rack and just got a MicroFreak) and wondering whether you think the Model 12 might be the right hub for this sort of thing? They also have the Mixcast 4 coming out, which looks interesting and is definitely designed for podcasters, but I wonder whether the Model 12 might offer more room to grow if I get more into the music side.
@tefty Do u have sound issues with the new mpc 2.11. 5 update? When I'm connected with my tascam, there are sound glitches EVERYWHERE, anybody struggling with it too? Any solutions out there? It's pretty frustrating
Would I be right in assuming that there is no delay compensation in the Tascam when monitoring or on the SD card recordings? I.e. Sources switched to ‘pc’ are 8ms delayed compared to analog inputs that have the same midi clock? And is that latency consistent at 8ms whether it’s the MPC as a source or (say) the laptop? Did you find that latency difference ok for jamming/tracking or was it off-putting? Thanks
Great job as usual Tefty 😎, interesting technique, love ❤️ the idea that just using the excellent Tascam 12 for multi tracking on the fly, useful sound card, built ins n outs, final mixing in Ableton etc. I'm thinking my setup will consist of a Multitrack mixer/recording, mic🎤 ,synths, possibly a DJ mixer 4 or 6 track connected to guitar pedals for ambient sounds, techno, a pioneer DJS1000 as my sampler, drum machine, pad controller, output through my Mackie Mk3 monitors, should be good to go by Jan next year, cant wait!🤗

Yup, absolutely.
Thanks for watching! 🙏❤
great breakdown! Thank you for the video. Subbed right away!
Ghost spotted, Tefty is a Guardian!
I don’t get it, why not just run everything straight into the daw and skip the expense of the model 12 in the first place?
People keep saying the Model 12+ line is a great DAWless setup when its also an incredible DAW setup too.
My tascam arrives next month. Can you confirm that I can hook up my synth audio to the mixer, usb to mpc and record midi on the mpc ?. This would allow me to re record and change midi on the fly or edit the midi track on mpc. So far only seen examples using internal mpc instruments.
Is Tascam Model 12 needs power amp for using passive speakers?
@@unclemick-synths Oh yeah, I noted that in my first post. The issue is that The One only has stereo Ins anyway, so that wouldn't matter here.
You try triggering MPC from Model 12 to simplify track edits? Think that approach works for overdubs 👀
Do you have a good idea on how to get a analog mix ?
What was the device that you had to the right of the MPC One, and what does it do?
Seriously? It's a model d, a mono synth. A clone of the original Minimoog from the 70s.
that track is nice i would like to hear the full track
i wish y'all guys would show how to hook up cabling to the model 12 and pc usb my usb indicator light my indicator light will not light up
Si je comprend bien le Tascam permet de séparer les pistes de la MPCONE ?
Anyone having issues with MPC and Tascam 12 where outputs 1/2, 7/8, and 9/10 are the only usb audio outputs from the MPC to the model 12?
I just got my Model 12 and am experiencing this issue. Just changed my firmware to 1.30 and can't revert back to older versions it seems.
Just looking for some sage!🍻
I would like to know if it’s a possibility if I can record the XYFX to tascam without issues?
You answered me at 6minutes. Sorry for being inpatient 🤣🙏🏽
Do you know if the MPC One will sync to the Model 12's Midi Time Code through USB?
hello what the sony headphones do you use?, thanks
Very helpful video. Would you tell me if I can multirecord to the Tascam disc, using MPC5000 and Tascam Model mixer ? Using the MPC5000 USB out and the main outs plugged in the Tascam stereo IN's ? I just prefer to use my MPC5000 instead of buying MPC One.
Nope, the USB-Audio support is only recent on the MPC One, Live, X models.
@@TeftyMeems thanks homie !
Is it possible to master in the Tascam?
Tefty - Why didn't you go with the Tascam Model 24 with more tracks.
@@TeftyMeems but then why not make the Model 12 the master and sync the MPC to it? What am I missing? - I'm sure there's something. 😎
OK a quick search - since I don't own an MPC hardware device - has told me that MPC hardware bites at being a MIDI slave and it hasn't been fixed yet.
By the way I love that song can’t wait to hear the full version
Thanks for all your work
Best regards, Rick

Noobie dawless question: If the Tascam can record and store audio what is the point of the Mpc one? Trying to figure which one to get first. Thanks!
I’m not an expert on d.a.w.l no next to nothing but never had a couple of the household the kids do but I agree I learn 12 and had to do things I like the new technology every time I try to use a W messing up and I’ve heard producers say if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll be overwhelmed with options and make mistakes and some people may use it for the wrong reasons change the voice or whatever if I already can sound decent with most people crap then it’s just my personal pleasure add wanna learn but for me it ain’t worth it
Same setup! You guys will provide ton of inspiration I am sure. Will try your pack too. Good stuff!
Got this and return it later it is an awesome mixer packed with advance features but one thing ..the sound just not there too bad.
Are there any other mixers instead of the Tascam you could use?
The Zoom mixers are an option. I haven't tried them personally though.
@@TeftyMeems Dont you need a sequencer in this whole set-up?
The Model 12 is super nice have one too
Just got the 16.
What kind of usb hub do you have ?
So for recording guitar and vocals Is is possible to do live track recording from the tascam to the mpc through that usb connection?
Correct 👍
I’m using a DP-24
Sort of off topic, but I'm a podcaster who is just getting into music (I'm learning VCV Rack and just got a MicroFreak) and wondering whether you think the Model 12 might be the right hub for this sort of thing? They also have the Mixcast 4 coming out, which looks interesting and is definitely designed for podcasters, but I wonder whether the Model 12 might offer more room to grow if I get more into the music side.
@tefty
Do u have sound issues with the new mpc 2.11. 5 update? When I'm connected with my tascam, there are sound glitches EVERYWHERE, anybody struggling with it too? Any solutions out there? It's pretty frustrating
This or the SSL Six?
Great video
SUPER HELPFULL
Wish I could make my new mackie to work the same. Smh can anyone help?
Would I be right in assuming that there is no delay compensation in the Tascam when monitoring or on the SD card recordings? I.e. Sources switched to ‘pc’ are 8ms delayed compared to analog inputs that have the same midi clock? And is that latency consistent at 8ms whether it’s the MPC as a source or (say) the laptop? Did you find that latency difference ok for jamming/tracking or was it off-putting? Thanks
Go into the MPC grid view and nudge 2 or 3 times to the left with TC turned off. I find this is all compensation you need
So strange you make the most relevant videos to my interests. I was looking at a multitrack today
Great minds 💪💪
lets hope akai fix the latency with an update
Nice indeed
Thanks man
Great job as usual Tefty 😎, interesting technique, love ❤️ the idea that just using the excellent Tascam 12 for multi tracking on the fly, useful sound card, built ins n outs, final mixing in Ableton etc.
U know your stuff
