  • This lecture "The First Line of Defense Against Adversity" by Manly P. Hall was recorded on September 23, 1984 in Los Angeles. The transcript was once available in print and was corrected according to Mr. Hall's notes as Lecture Note 329. Therefore, it may not exactly match the spoken word here, but instead, it reflects and honors the changes Hall himself made at the time.

    Sweet mercy,
This is more relevant in 2024 than 1984.

"It is a religion that goes inside, and gives us the courage to do better, to forgive our enemies, to continue to live in a world of uncertainties made certain and strong by our faith in rules and principles stronger than this world. Without this type of believing, we are not going to get over our anxieties."
Words like these used to make me feel how unfortunate that MPH is no longer physically with us, but more and more I'm grateful that his wisdom and voice is right here and now, whenever we're ready to connect to him. Thanks MHS for your tireless work.

He reminds me of things I already know and confirms what I've found to be true. Even in these very difficult times there is also the power that comes to one in times of trouble no matter the trouble, help does come. I should know and it was Manly P Hall that helped me go from homeless addict i found Manly P Hall when i was staying in a salvation army shelter and about to lose my mind. Here it is 5 years later I've had my home now for over 3 years and I'm doing great doing what I love. It was because of manly P hall and these lectures that have been so lovingly preserved. Thank you with all my love, Kim

What a meaningful speech with profound insight that only a wise man who has lived, seen and experienced and worked hard within himself to overcome can give. Yet he is still more than this as he encourages the betterment of society in a way that reminds me of a certain quality present in Malcolm X which imo implies he sincerely cares for improving the well being of the listeners.

Becoming good can only be possible if there exists the opposite of good, otherwise it would not be possible to grow and choose integrity. Gods grace allows this dual condition. True awakening might simply be as small as choosing not to do something that might cause you harm in some way. But it is not simple when it's all you know and those around you accept it and normalise it. One thing about religion that freaks me out is the possibility that the individual alone must take so much responsibility in one's own salvation and carry it into eternity as you are, you'll be forever.

I am that I am. What I am. Through development. Not sure there will ever be anything anyone could do to change what that is. I can strive to be better. And I should. But as much as I've managed to maintain a fairly high standard of interpersonal interactions and treat the people around me with respect, love and righteousness (those three concepts tend to overlap with each other though) it hasnt seemed to serve me very well at all... So it begs the question, what would possibly motivate me to be BETTER than I've been? Damn sure not perfect. First to admit it. But relatively speaking? I'm a fucking saint...
