BRING YOUR PHOTOS TO LIFE using 2.5D parallax animation | Photoshop & After Effects Tutorial

  • In this weeks video we are going to learn how to bring your photos to life and make them more interesting using the parallax 2.5D animation effect.This is a great technique that can be used to make your photos more interesting before uploading them to Instagram.
    We will be using Adobe Photoshop to split my photo into separate layers and animate their scale. Then we will be taking the split up photo into Adobe After Effects and using a 3D camera and the puppet tool to animate it even further.

    2:50 the "Quick Selection" tool would have made easy work of that.... Messing around with brush size and holding Alt to remove any accidentally added parts turns a 5-15 minute job into a 30 second job with almost unrecognizable differences!

      Definitely would have made easy work with my example but not with everyones and its a good skill to know how to use the pen tool which is why I used it :)

Explanation very clear; you mention the tools, what they are used for and other relevant information to them as well as the shortcuts. This is an example of how a RUclips tutorial should always be!       You can use paint 3d to separate layers automatically toooooo if you don't have photoshop

    So do you HAVE to use the pen tool? I much prefer the quick selection tool, but when I do, everything is greyed out when I right click the background... Also, I don't get any results when I attempt to click and drag the layers up onto the new film+video layer. I drag and drop but nothing changes. (BTW why do you have to hold Shift when doing this?)

    It is one of the ugliest effects on earth, imho. You're explaining it well, no issue, but whenever I see this effect in a documentary, where it is often used by people obducted by directors, their documentary can never get a 10 out of 10 anymore, if 4 out of 10. It's a cheap-turning effect that is expensive to make, which makes it an even worse effect. Nevertheless, thanks for explaining how it's done. Good effort.

    I followed the steps and made exactly the same thing with another picture and my image remained still. The effects didn`t occur. Is there some program I need to download before try that? I know to use photoshop but I have never used this Filme & Video part. Also, I downloaded the after effects but I don't know to use yet. Your tutorial seems very easy, I`m disappointed that it didn't work for me and I don`t know what is the problem. If you have some tip would be very nice. Thank you!

      Hi Julia, I'm sorry to hear that.. It would be hard for me to see what is wrong without seeing your screen.. maybe you didnt make keyframes in Photoshop? I would suggest going through it again and being very careful to make sure you didnt miss a step :)

    Hey Josh thanx for the nice and quick video. I spend a long afternoon getting it right...and it worked out. Just one think: the framerate 29,97 is US TV, 25 germanTV, 24 cinema. So one should think what to do with the video.

    Whenever I use GMS, it softs notNice tutorialng like yours, even though it has the sa settings... It's just a buzzing noise. Weird.
