  • This is a teardown of an RB25 R30A gearbox.
I bought this used knowing that it had a blown third gear, my plan is to repair and use in my R32.
In this video I'll show how to split a RB25 gearbox and we'll inspect the damage. The process is mostly the same for the 300zx R30A and for the R71C gearbox found in R32, S13, S14, S15, C33, A31 etc. etc. also.

I need to change my input shaft bearing. Can this be changed from the bell house or does it need to come apart?
Great video, I need to strip down a SR20 box and looks very similar.

Thanks! SR20 boxes are very similar, I've done a few RB20 boxes and they're nearly identical. I think it will have to come apart for the bearing to be changed otherwise you can't get a puller on it

Id say im handy with tools however never took a box apart, got this RB25 box thats been rebuilt but sat about for a few years without oil and now makes a noise so guess its the bearing gone dry? Im really hoping this is something i can do myself. Could you let me know if you think i should send it away or try and fix myself. Cheers for the help. @@ToolTimeWithTom

I think you'll need a fairly long puller to slip that bearing off and perhaps a press to get that back in. It's probably worth sending it off if you think there's an issue. So long as it's sealed, sitting dry shouldn't cause any issues. Maybe run some oil through it and see how it goes?

Ill take the case off inside the bellhouse and see what it looks like before i take it all apart. By your video it looks like ill be able to have a good look at the bearing. With my SR box i snapped the main shaft coming out to the prop, do you know a company where i can get parts for the box? Thanks for all your help and replying to me. @@ToolTimeWithTom

Sorry, missed this, you can still get OE gearbox parts from Nissan Japan, places like RHDJapan or Amayama

Absolutely, I've got quite a few other projects to do first though unfortunately. Will probably be a winter project

Hey man, I pulled my rb25 box apart and am now having an issue with assembly. Do you have a social media I could contact you on by chance?

      What's the issue you're having ?

@@ToolTimeWithTom The main shift rod I guess I would call it wont pivot all of a sudden, its essentially stuck at a bit of an angle so I can't get the shifter all back together. The rod itself won't spin or pivot

I had that once, any chance it's locked into gear? Try turning the input shaft while wiggling the shift rod to see if you can't get it to slip out

@@ToolTimeWithTom I'll give that a try. It does seem like I can get it into two gears, either by pushing down or pulling up on the rod. I only pulled the tailshaft section off as well
