    I run a gas station here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and saw a older gentleman came on a Silver Ferrari to fill it up. We rarely get super cars at our station so went out to look at it and it was RHD Ferrari. Asked the guy about it and he said he is from Westminster, UK and he ships his car to US for a month every year and do a road trip. I asked him why not rent a car and he said he only drive the cars he own.

    I’ve met a few Europeans with their Defenders and Mercedes Sprinters around the outback and they have fascinating stories how they got here, 1 couple had their defender to be put on a ship out of Chile but because of all the frozen fruit coming to Australia there was no room, so they had to drive to another country in South America to get on a boat here.

    I took my motorcycle around the world back in 1995. I sent the motorbike from New York to London. Then from Athens to Australia. You do not need a carnet. I ran into a lot of bureaucracy. And this is pre-Internet. When the bike arrived. And I went to get it in Melbourne. You needed an import export form which only is possible to get from outside of the country. Then you have to provide 26.5% of the value of the motorcycle. And then you get this money back when you leave. It was registered in New York. So I had a New York license plate.What happened was. you have to get the import export form from out of the country first. But I found a guy in Canberra customs .He said that’s fine just fax me your passport and the information of the motorcycle. And I will get that back to you. When I brought the papers from him and everything else after being in customs in Melbourne a few times. . And being told it’s not possible. How many people returned back. Their vehicles.The lady couldn’t believe that I had this form. And she actually asked me can you please give me the number to the office person you got this from in Canberra.. . The best advice I found in Australia. . Listen up,!!
    You do not ask questions.? They’ll just tell you no. You have to tell them the answers. And make them think about it. And that’s how it’s done in Australia. 25 years ago.
    Edit . By the way I still have the same harley . With about 1,000,000 miles on it. No shit.

It went in a 20 foot container with the tools from my garage and arrived in about 10 weeks. Used a shipping agent who kept me updated through the process. Heard a horror story of some one loading a car into a freezer container and along the way some deck hand switched the freezer on can't imagine the mess.

    Really useful thanks. At the start of shipping our Ranger and demountable from U.K. to US. So far I have organised a visa appointment at the US embassy in London for a B2 nonimmigrant visa. Next I am obtaining an EPA temporary import of vehicle permission, this lasts up to a year for the vehicle but it says’ The vehicle must be exported back within one year from the date of importation or upon the nonresident leaving the country which occurs first.’ A requirement of the B2 visa is that every 6 months the holder must leave the US for a short period, (not sure if there is a minimum period).Hoping that this is possible without having to ship the vehicle out as I have to leave the country albeit for a short period, giving only a 6 month tour instead of up to a year. Is there anyone else who has come across this?

  • @TheFatihyet
    @TheFatihyet Год назад

    I always wondered how does inspection works on a extended journey (like German TUV or English MOT). Because these things are annual, what happens when it expires while you are at the other side of the world? Do you just get it inspected there with their system?

    I understand the Public Liability insurance on your Defender whilst in Australia
    But
    Whether u r in Australia or Japan etc, who insurers your vehicle worldwide for fire, theft, accident damage and total loss etc ?
    What is the approx annual cost of this type of policy ?

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 2 года назад +1

      It's extremely difficult to find an insurance company that will cover you on an international trip like ours.
      We've currently got full cover with an Australian company called Club 4x4 but before that we've only ever had 3rd party insurance that is compulsory in each country.
      Some countries I wouldn't trust that the insurance would really work anyway...

      There is obviously a lot of $$$ invested into these vehicles.
      When you don’t have full insurance OS, if it got stolen, or if vandals set your unattended vehicle on fire, that is a total loss, and you have no insurance cover..
      That would be terrible. 🤷🏻‍♂️
