Garcia was her "school bell", and when he showed up to arrest him is when she played her card. She knew the charges he faced and the time he'd have to do in prison if convicted. After the the bail hearing is when she went to her dad asking to bail him out in exchange for his hand in marriage. That was the only way she knew Sonny would stay with her.
