Especially when you've got that beautiful Mother shine, and want to add everything you possibly can. I don't even want imagine how much shipping would total up to after only being able to buy an item or two at a time.

It's kinda nice to collect stuff for a series you love and need to say "there's so much stuff, I'm going to have to start being choosy" after it being just a niche thing for years unless your goal is to collect *all* of it in which case oh no

I know it's generally been popular there regardless. ) That could have something to do with them being able to justify this much merch. I'm sure Itoi is delighted to produce it, either way. The fanbase got a whole lot bigger when Undertale made it big, and then it got another jump in fans when Vinny from Vinesauce streamed MOTHER 3 in 2019. After that point EarthBound music ended up getting used more frequently in memes, and even more "localize MOTHER 3" jokes started flying around in the mainstream. It isn't an obscure series at all anymore. It's been really interesting watching it change, after being mostly under the radar for so long. I often no longer have to refer to Smash Bros. when bringing it up to someone, lol.
I know how you feel when you said that there's a bucket that's being dumped on us, especially since a lot of the pieces are rereleases of rare/limited edition items that have been out of production for years before the project started. When I was writing about this for Mother Forever, by the time I finished the article, there had been yet /another/ announcement of things I wanted to cover. So then I wrote another article, and sure enough, there was /another/ announcement by the time I finished that one. I'd like to write about it again, but... maybe when things slow down so I don't have to play catch up, especially since going so indepth takes a lot of time. ^^"
My favourite piece of merch from my favourite story-driven game Tales of the Abyss is a “scenario book”, as in, a book of literally all the cutscenes, laid out in screenshots and dialogue line by line. It’s the coolest concept of a piece of merch. It’s like, WHY are you a thing?? but also, it’s SO COOL you exist! Yes it’s also in Japanese and I have to remember from context what the dialogue is saying…
I’m absolutely loving all the Mother merchandise, but man am I hoping at the end of all the merchandise lies some kind of Mother trilogy for the switch.

What I find fascinating is how 'chic' some of the merch feels. You like Clumsy Robot? How about a METAL PIN! You like the sprites? HOW ABOUT THESE LITTLE INDIE STYLE CHARMS? etc. And I'm not complaining, but I've been very picky about what I'll get. If I could make it myself, I won't order it. If it's something I'll regret missing out on later, you can bet your behinds I'll be getting it! My scripts arrive Friday, my giant Mr Saturn arrives in July some time. I await action figures, but I know that won't ever happen.

It’s a very Japanese marketing gimmick. I own a lot of stuff from a particular series and they release new products every couple of months, and they cost an arm and a leg for shipment.

I remember this, I had no clue what to do. We hadn't gotten a lot since the 90's and then, boom, a ton of new stuff.
I understand the dilemma with shipping costs but Im glad the mother series is getting more merch, it is well deserved.
