I loved listening to your playthroughs while I grinded dungeons and picked flowers in WoW back in the day. Been a fan of EB since it came out. I remember scouring Nintendo Power and drawing the characters while I eagerly anticipated its arrival. I loved JRPGs back then, and seeing one set in a modern setting was a welcome breath of fresh air.
The most memorable Christmas gift I ever received was the EB big box cart. Could go on and on, but man...I love this series.

Same here Chuggaa. On the subject, your Mother 3 playthrough was what showed me that videogames could be more than just Mario and Pokemon. I was kind of on the older side at the time to just be getting into videogames (13 years old), but my parents had recently allowed me my first console, a DS. I was interested in Paper Mario after having played a demo of TTYD at a hotel, and that's how I found your channel and subscribed. You were just finishing up your Mother 3 playthrough at the time, and one of those videos was the first to show up on my subscription feed. I watched the whole series and was entranced at how wacky and tragic the game could simultaneously be. I was shocked that a videogame could make me cry. While I've played and loved many other games over the years, Mother 3 will always hold a special place in my heart, and you're the one I have to thank for that.

If they could use the same art style as the Link's Awakening remake, it would be so cute and still take it a step further than what it was before! Also I watch your LPs for the series multiple times, Emile. Thank you for introducing me and my sister to this sentimental story and strange little world.

I think that since Itoi will not be involved with a sequel, a remake of one of the three games might be a better option. Modernizing them a little bit for new audiences, maybe reviving that clay aesthetic in 3D and polishing the few outdated aspects of the games. Or a 16 bit remake of the first one which is the hardest to get into, remake it in the style of 2 and 3 so that you can sell all of them in a coherent package.

I loved hearing the unique perspectives of your guests; having all of these longtime EarthBound megafans like Stephen & Mal in one place made for an unforgettable retrospective! I especially appreciated the early footage of Tyler getting EarthBound for the first time, and that recording of the game being played in the background of Brittney’s birthday…such rare, cool time capsules to share with us.
The cinematography was brilliant too, contextualizing Shesez’ friend’s dirty bedroom from the '90s with an empty bowl of Fruity Pebbles and a lonely Pokémon card was perfect. All of the small presentation touches make this something really special, much like the games themselves.

_"I was talking to Lou Reed the other day and he said that the first Velvet Underground record sold 30,000 copies in the first five years. The sales have picked up in the past few years, but I mean, that record was such an important record for so many people. _*_I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!"_* -Brian Eno, _Musician_ Magazine, October 1982
This is a rather famous quip about the influence of The Velvet Underground, one of my all-time favourite bands; a niche, underground rock group from the late 1960s that wound up inspiring, essentially, the _entire genres_ of punk rock in the late-70s, and later the alt-rock & grunge movements of the late-80s and early-90s. They would often make songs that abused the senses, with lyrics about drug abuse, casual sex, BDSM, etc.; adult-oriented music about "life in the gutter", to quote one critic, that's commonplace in music now to the point of cliché but which most bands of that era weren't even _allowed_ to sing about. And as Eno put it above, their taboo records sold _very_ poorly, but their influence on music in the decades to come was, I dare say, unrivaled. Their song "Heroin" in particular is, for my money, one of the most important songs ever recorded.
I often think about EarthBound in a similar light: a game too weird, perhaps even too "deviant", for its time but which struck an incredible chord with those who _did_ get to play it. It influenced its players in an incredible way, and that's shown in the games we've seen in the almost 30 years since its release: Undertale & Deltarune, the Lisa trilogy, Yume Nikki; and a number of indie titles so countless that "EarthBound-like" as a term has almost become its own genre, in the same way "Roguelike" did, to properly describe them. Similarly almost to the point of cliché, where nowadays "quirky EarthBound-inspired indie RPG about depression" is a meme that some roll their eyes at.
To me, though, EarthBound is an "artist's artwork," one of those rare and truly special works that inspires creative people to want to make something like it themselves. I often find myself rehashing and recycling Eno's quote in talking about the game: _EarthBound_ only sold about a hundred thousand copies in the States when it first came out, but everyone who bought one made their own video game.
_🎵 I don't know just where I'm going; but I'm gonna try for the Kingdom, if I can... 🎵_

The advertising campaign in NA alone was worth $2m and they barely recouped those costs _globally._ It was a historical failure. Outlets such as GamePro even reported a record-breaking number of complaints over the scratch-and-sniff ads. In the end, it sold a little over 1/5th of the copies that it did in Japan, which were already fairly low compared to other Nintendo blockbusters, even despite the considerably larger consumerbase. At ~140,000 copies, it was a record low for first-party game sales for Nintendo in NA.

I had not until that time played a game with such emotional depth. Dealing with death and loss, seeing Flint lose it when he found out his wife died, to see that Lucas rarely leave his mom's gave since she died, it touched my soul in a way that hardly anything up until that time had, I had shut down emotionally inside for a few years. I’ve been thinking of what to write here for too long, so here goes. The MOTHER series changed my life. I know that saying so may be a bit cliché, but it’s true. I was in my early teens when I got into the series, and I kind of consider it the point that separates my life as a child and my life as a… young adult, I guess. Suddenly I was interested in art, and the impact it could have on others, and the passion of the people who poured their hearts and souls into it. Maybe more importantly, MOTHER 3 showed me the importance of love, of compassion, of kindness, of sympathy, and of empathy. Over the years these games, especially MOTHER 3, have not only changed my life, but saved it. No other works of art mean more to me. Thank you Shigesato Itoi, and thank you for making this video. I just hope more people take the time to experience this strange, funny, heartrending, and truly wonderful series.

When you are happy, with laughter to spare
Fun is twice as fun with someone to share
When you are lonely and full of despair
Things aren't half as bad when somebody cares
Maybe now you have figured it out
That's what being a friend is about
When you're looking for a shoulder you can cry on
      Won't you think about me?
When you're looking for someone you can rely on
      Don't you ever doubt me
      I'll be there someway, somehow

When you are restless and want room to breathe
I will give you all the space that you need

      Count on me
Let me be a friend in need
Let me be a friend indeed
      Count on me
And if you ask me, you know that it's true
There is not a thing that I wouldn't do
I'd follow you to the ends of the earth
That's how much I think our friendship is worth
Maybe now you have figured it out
That's what being a friend is about
When there's something that you just don't understand

Despite the sentiment of “no crying until the end”, this video had me bawling from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who worked on this video to shed such a beautiful and honorable light on how fantastic this series is. I am so elated knowing that the Mother series has changed so many lives and not just mine… I sincerely don’t think I would be here today if it wasn’t for this series. To put it bluntly, it literally saved my life. In general too, I always get a big smile on my face whenever you guys post something another related… keep up the amazing work!

@@thecunninlynguist It's amazing. It's difficult to explain what playing the game in 2022 is like, but I really love it and am thinking it will end up being in my top 2 or top 3 favorite RPGs of all time. It didn't feel dated at all. The "annoying" things in the game are supposed to be there and offer a test of perseverance to the player. Obviously, the story is second to none. The gameplay is nothing revolutionary, but it's also so fun to play because everything is so well paced. Dungeons are short-ish. Dialog is near perfect and almostr never feels burdensome. It's a very good game and worth playing in 2022 and beyond.

@@PestulonGaming given that it's supposed to be the "real" world the dungeons being as short as they are make some sense, because who in the right mind would want to build such extensive dungeons, lol. I wish more games would implement the odometer style HP/MP system. I've been saved a good amount of times by quickly ending the battle before my HP hits zero

I picked up Earthbound for the SNES for $13 as a kid when I was at a flea market while camping at Carowinds for the weekend with my family. I had no idea what it was at the time as it was just the cart and no manual or box. I didn't have a computer or Nintendo Power at that time and so I went into Earthbound blind not even knowing what genre of game this would be when I popped it into my family's SNES. I'd never played anything like Earthbound and it was very intriguing. I didn't quite understand how it worked at first but eventually I got the hang of it and was hooked.

Long time viewer, first time commenter. Just wanted to say this was a lovely video. Having not played any game in the Earthbound series, it was still infectious to see the joy from everyone who loved the series in their own way. The Earthbound series has always felt inaccessible to me, and for obviously fair reasons, so much so that even when the NSO version was revealed it still didn't feel worth it to look into. But this video has changed my mind and after I knock a couple other games off the backlog, I'll be looking forward to giving this a shot on my Nintendo Switch :)

So, I just got done watching the unboxing video, and I decided to come back here and write a comment in case I didn't the first time.
I love a lot of games and franchises. Zelda, Mario 3D/2D/Party/Kart, Super Smash Bros, Friday the 13th, Beetle Adventure Racing. Like there's lot of games I LOVE... but Earthbound... just hits different.
Like, I love it, but that's not the best way to describe my feeling. There are games I love to pieces and the feeling for most of them is the same, but this just gives me a special feeling. It feels so grounded even though it's otherworldly. It packs a lot heart, but yet is completely silly. It's like this amazing mixture of balance that just gives you an experience unlike any other. Favorite game of all time.

There is no other game series that brings people together like this one does. You guys did a beautiful job. I know I’m a nobody but given the opportunity, I would absolutely love to gush about this game and how much it saved my life and helped me feel loved in a time when I had nobody. I owe Itoi and the rest of the team my whole heart. These games are the reason I make music and understand emotions. Mother 3 alone just thinking about that game I get choked up and teary eyed. I was a huge part of this fandom for a long time from when I was 12 until I was 18, and the people I met and the experiences I had with these likeminded people was profound. I used to run a mildly famous Instagram page for Mother related stuff and to this day I look back and see it as one of the most important moments of my life. Thank you guys for making such a beautiful documentary, and remember…

This is so sweet! One thing I really love (idk if they mention this in the video cuz I'm only halfway through) is how Earthbound is such a nostalgic experience for me now, going back to it, but it's also a little sadder than it was when I was a kid-things like having to call your mom, or just the general whimsical vibe, there's something about that kind of nostalgia that comes with a sort of like. awareness of how you don't really appreciate being a kid when you actually are one, til you grow up and have adult responsibilities and stuff :P and then mother 3... felt like it engaged with that sort of sadness and sense of loss directly. Without spoiling anything, there's deep personal losses that the characters go through but also just a general sense of longing for a way of life that has been lost that really speaks to me now, as an adult. But I agree that if the games weren't SO hilarious and engaging and if the music wasn't so damned good idk if I would have played them enough to form such a deep emotional connection with them, so I feel like it strikes a really good balance. If it was JUST about loss and sadness the whole way through I'd probably have played through it once and then never touched it again like I did with Last of Us Part II lmao (gonna reply to this comment and put my slightly more spoilery thoughts there in the reply, in case anyone wants to avoid those)

    • @wangledteb5671

And it's interesting to me because like... the whole plot of Mother 3, with an essentially socialist community being taken over by the Pigmask army and changed into capitalists, feel so like... I mean I'm Indigenous, in what's now called Canada, so I read that very much as an allegory for colonialism, but I don't know that Itoi was necessarily thinking about the colonization of North America when he wrote it. But I do know from things I've read, that that sort of forced transition from more socialist ways of living to capitalism happened in Europe too, and the transition very much did involve violence and coercion just like in Mother 3, so I wonder if maybe it's been like that everywhere. But it is just rly cool to me that someone who wrote a game in a totally different language on the other side of the world made something that feels so deeply personal to me lol and judging by this video, to a lot of people!

  • @Schimnesthai

Finally watched it, this was great, i will play Earthbound eventually, but not through Switch Online as i dislike paying for services. One thing that stuck out to me was that someone played it and bought the house, then the rest talked about how alive the game felt, and that's the way i play Xenoblade Chronicles X, i feel like just messing around, living there until i buy my Skel. That's a modern game yet oddly enough Earthbound feels more alive since you can even buy food, so i'll give this game a go with this new mindset, thanks for this great video!

Earthbound makes me emotional because the game feels self aware, the music, almost like its saying “hey, you’re old now but we know you’re still here”
