  • By second year, medical students have learned a lot about disease. In this video, Albert Einstein College of Medicine students take a light-hearted look at how this knowledge can sometimes trigger temporary hypochondria -- as well as unforeseen "eureka" moments.

I m 16 , when I was kid i had lesser of it , like i took few precautions after studying about health in science lik age of 12 or 13, but I m 16 and I m going crazy about symptoms and my family hates when I talk about it,so i have to not tell them what I m experiencing, i thinks it gets stronger with age but I m too afraid to Google it wether it gets stronger with age or not!!

@@krishafyme please do not google your symptons because you will stress more. Just wait for a couple of days and assume that it is just a normal thing or something that is not dangerous. For example if it is a headache try resting or taking a paracetamol etc... and see if it goes away.

I think what it is ultimately our mind is doing internal aerobics...worry worry! When in fact we need to put the focus on something else, which I did do later in life....I have become a avid reader. I've gotten older and now the dying thing is less concerning. What I do know with age and still being alive...we are always going to have physical pain while we are alive, but it doesn't mean we have anything in particular or that we are sick, it's just a fact of being human.

Pretty funny... I have health anxiety and confided this to my doctor a few years ago and he chided me to avoid Dr google bc he had suffered the same type of hypochondria during Med school.... probably from learning so much and hyper stimulation.

The only difference is that doctors are professionals and see sick people regularly. We just assume the worst base upon what we read but have no real data or observation back up our assumptions so while they got over it we are stuck in a loop. Lol.

I think your doc gave you really bad advice. As a hypochondriac who has only learned how to manage the symptoms after education with a health background, learning as much info as you can actually significantly helps the anxiety, knowing a little bit of information for sure makes it terrifying and increases worry, but if you learn enough information it actually makes it a shit ton less scary far less scarier than if you had known no information.

@@mrjjthor Which is exactly why you need to dive deeper in Dr. Google not dip your toe in and leave it alone, that's the worst thing you can do. Ideally you want to educate yourself fully on it, but if you can't do more than dipping your toe in, don't even dip your toe in. Merely dipping your toe in is by far the worst thing one can do for hypochondria.

@@ashleyashleym2969 I do agree but I'd say it depends on what websites you do your research on. If someone is just reading articles and stories that does very little to help, possibly making things worse. If you treat it as writing a research paper for school and use scholar sites and books then yes, I'd say I agree. It's almost or the same as "medical student disease". However, not everyone's mind is the same and while some may be able to overcome it others won't be so lucky.

I mean it’s good to know I’m not alone since I’m a med student....but I still feel ashamed for behaving the way I do. I never knew how crippling being a hypochondriac was until I noticed that I really think that I am one myself. And it’s sad Becuz people expect me to care for them one day and my parents expect me to be level headed and not to be this way. What do I tell them all when I’m so scared to get sick that it stops me from functioning and living and doing the job I need to do? ...its not like I can say to them...I’m sorry for being a hypochondriac I’ll make it go away right now...it’s just so damn sad. I don’t know how to beat this...not anymore.

Nina .D I was in your place a few months ago. Time, exposure and strong mental deliberation make this condition much more manageable. Eventually you will no longer have it. Don’t dig yourself deeper; seek help!
