- Teen Titans 2003 is a beloved adaptation of the famous group of sidekicks. Out of five seasons, one of them stands out as a wonderful example on how to adapt a comic book story arc. The arc in question is 'The Judas Contract'. Join me in my analysis of the second season of Teen Titans 2003.

I'm sorry, but depending on the mental illness, what's right and wrong is hard to differentiate. That's why we put mentally ill criminals in asylums if insanity can be proven. That being said, Tera didn't have a mental issue to that extent.
Yes she did. Terra was clearly a product of insanity not one of choice. She’s messed up not evil.
Damn. I just realized something. When Raven says “you treated us like dirt”. DIRT was the thing Terra ALWAYS manipulated. She used her friends the same way she used the earth. Just a tool.... idk if that was intentional from the writers but that lines definitely more powerful to me now.
Raven tried to rape half the male Titans.
Tara Markov wot. America explain!
Damn, that is some good observation. You kind of found a good metaphore in that single phrase, and the story kind of makes even more sense if you look at it in that way.
Tara Markov if you do drugs, do you get STONED???

@Rick O'Shay final episode kind of say she regret what she had done and asked Beastboy to forget about her and move on, which in my opinion is as good as redemption as we can get
@Rick O'Shay she turn to a stone statue, so the titans considered had died.
The show had shown the growth of Titans members so if they show Beastboy refuses Tera reason and insisted to bring her back into the Titans, it's character assassination and bad writing
The terra arc physically hurt me as a kid T-T
But in a good way.
Gavin YoungMann Same
you can feel that arc, you felt bad for her, it was a great show.
it really did tho, that abrupt, unforeseen ending with a massive lack of closure. like real life.

That's just sad
"That's not me... I'm not a hero, I'm not out to save the world. I'm just a girl with a geometry test next period and I haven't studied." Damn that's some good writing.
Hope she does well on her test
I am not a hero, but a blablabla.
Yeah......I think I've read that before but I don't know where.
She failed that shit. Worst part is it was the *final* test of the year

This arc had me so emotionally conflicted as a child it's crazy

I love how everyone in that school at the end just walk past beast boy and none are fazed
With how much crap happens in that city, I think they're just numb to them by now.
If you think he doesn't hang around and flirt badly with highschoolers then you and I have some very differing opinions.
I see you have an eye for taking notice of things most people don't notice i do the same thing. Also the story telling in this one was as good as any prime time show and that's why i think this story stayed with me so long especially as far as cartoons go.
How I think Terra is still alive:
During The Gem in Season 4, Slade said,” Flesh will become stone...” Raven was ABLE to beat Trigon and restore everything they destroyed... Everyone in the city ( not the Titans) was turned into STONE and Raven “fixed” EVERYONE. Terra was STONE!!
Great theory
Xx_Jaylah_Baka_xX That’s actually brilliant bro
I mean that's the most likely theory I've heard so I'm in.
Thats a good explaination.
I didn't think that was a theory I'm pretty sure it's just what happened
I remember as a kid how frustrating it was to watch Tera descend, but after this video i now understand that I never truly understood her character. Thanks a lot as this video has given me yet another reason to adore this masterpiece of a show.
This honestly made me feel so much better about the end of Teen Titans. When I watched the first time I was very young and just wanted more. It felt like an abrupt end. But this gave me a new perspective to look at it from. Tremendous job man, genuinely enjoyed it!
That makes me feel like I did a good job! All I want is for people to see a different side to the media they may enjoy and if one person sees it that way, I consider that a win. Thank you!
The writers always said that the ending was 100% intentional.
To be honest the ending kinda ruin the show's intention for redemption and Beast boy's maturing mentally. Rather than moving on he just learn that Terra is still alive and pining on someone that no longer want to return to that world.
The show showed during the doppelgänger fight that he still missed and thought about Terra. Things Change lets him know she’s alive and ends with him letting her go to be happy and live her gon life. That’s the definition of moving on.
Core Ideas so the person in “Things Change” is terra?
From a girl who played Hero, to one that fell and eventually became one, Teras arc was really a sad one. I remember her episodes the most and her episodes always stuck with me because she was a well written character
Terra's arc was also the most memorable for me. Her character is just so charming for the fact that she is good and bad at the same time. It's bittersweet that every time Terra does something good, you can see the heroic side of her, but you know that's going to eventually disappear.
Nothing sad about a whore sleeping around with deathstroke
Only Comics Terra did that and he was at fault for it.
Wandering Oryx Go away demon I say back to the caverns of Gehenna
@@charlottewalnut3118 dont be mad women like comic terra exist and only use men as a stepping stone for their needs
I think the cartoon version of Terra worked a lot better, mostly because Terra wasn’t built around being a ‘what a twist’ villain for the sake of it. Sure in later comics they gave Terra a decent reason behind how she behaved, but her purpose was to be the opposite of characters like Kitty Pride and that was the problem.
I suppose so
Terra also was involved in Intimate relationship with Slade. but he Used her and Rejected her.
@@marcushardy6216 Making Deathstroke sleazy and Pathetic for commiting Statutory rape.
That and it feels like the relationship with Slade was only there to make HER look like the manipulator. Nevermind that Slade was like 40 something and she was a full blown minor.
Terra was definitely my favorite character in the show. I was always rooting for her and her relationship with Beast Boy. Her arc was deep, relatable, tragic, and for a small moment, heartfelt.
Even when re watching season 2 i kinda felt her becoming a villain seemed kinda inforced due to a misunderstanding and the fact she only seem to show up for a few episodes for season 2 i kinda felt they could of had Terra still with the teen titans with robin and the teen titans keeping her secret safe well Have Terra having thoughts if she can be a hero and at the sametime Deathstroke showing up in the shadows and sending tests to see if she can be turn and in the end promising her he can help master her powers as i felt the comics had more of a build up with the story
Your editing in this video is the kind of thing usually reserved for Batman: The Animated Series. There’s so much respect for this show and genuine craftsmanship on your part, I can envision showing literally anyone this and having them feel like it was a worthwhile watch. Great work, man. A sobering yet understated look at an under-appreciated adaptation.
Wow, that hit me harder than I thought it would. Thank you so much!
I would argue this adaptation is actually one of the more popular ones
Look at all the millennials attacking any new TV/film adaptations of the Titans that came after it lol
There's something I always found charming about Terra. Whether it's her character design or character development, there's always a bittersweet vibe she gives off. Her character is fun to watch as she creatively manipulates the Earth to save people, but deep down we know that isn't the truth. She's broken, lonely, and imperfect in every way possible. That makes me appreciate her good side so much more.
DizzyPickle Maybe it is. It's a common trend to base superpowers off of the user's personality, so Terra's power being powerful yet unstable represents her true self.
Yup love it . And never understand why people hate her. Yes she made bad decisions but that one moment where the teen titans not accepting her when it was genuine, I blame everything after that on them. Especially after what they told her it just makes them seem like liars especially to an emotionally unstable person
Credit also to the voice actress Ashley Johnson. She imbued the character's voice with so much strength and vulnerability. I honestly think she's one of the best casting choices the show made, alongside Tara Strong's Raven and Ron Perlman's Slade.
Curt Clark wait she's voiced by Ashley Johnson? Watdafaqqqqqq.
Curt Clark the same voice actor as that of Ellie from TLOU. How did I not notice that ugh
12:20 that right there is one of my favorite scenes. Raven, who’s usually calm and collected, loses it because she feels betrayed. This show was amazing at portraying the emotions of the characters
This helped me move past something very difficult. Thank you.
I don't know what to say except I'm glad it has helped you. You're never alone in what you are facing and I hope you keep your head up as you are now.
Amazing work! What a fantastic video. It's clear that you really poured yourself into this. I hope that this really takes off.
Love the series man!
Dude! Thank you so much! Seriously enjoying your review of the series and I can say the exact same to you. I hope this takes off as well but this was a great surprise!
Hey Lowart!
I hated the comics version of the story, mostly because Slade's manipulation & grooming of Terra was casually swept under the rug. He'd been trying to kill the Titans for 4 years and decided to use a teenage girl to do his job. I appreciated how the 2003 acknowledged this and punished Slade for his crimes.
To be fair, she used him as much as he used her. Potentially more but I fully understand why that wouldn't gel with you.
+Core Ideas The problem is that "her using him" was unrealistic and impossible to have happened in the real world. A teenage kid with a psychosis is not evil but insane. As the adult he should have tried getting her mental and emotional help and steering her on the path to good as she was never given the chance to choose. Instead he's not only encouraging her to be this way, but he's also raping her (Statutory) showing that he's a pedophile as well as a child abuser. Then he later gets "redeemed" in the eyes of the comic and its characters while the actual victim of the story gets vilified.
The show was smart enough to realize how dated the comic book storyline was (IE being edgy to shock and impress as people like that kind of stuff while hiding its poor writing) and made sure the actual victim was portrayed as the victim while the villain was portrayed as the villain.
"unrealistic in the real world" come on, bruh it's a CARTOON!!!! CARTOONS ARE NOT REAL
YOUR WAIFU IS NOT REAL
COMICS ARE NOT REAL
It's ok to enjoy cartoons, but I believe you have dove deep into escapism, and that is not healthy.
No, that's silly. If you don't hold it to real world standards when it's a serious storyline then it just excuses bad writing. Especially when it's victim blaming like the comic version.
The comic condemn Slade. Wilson's Butler mention that
"When he assumed Grant's contract on The Titans_ _ He became Obsessed. I tried to Temper his wilder Whims. But When he found that Markov Girl, I knew he was Racing Toward Ruin. I Can do nothing more for him. His Life is in Fate's Fickle Hand."
Slade was going in self-deconstruction already but when he met Terra he became worst.
I guess you can she tried to do good but was terable at it
I was gonna save my responses for tomorrow but this was just too good.

This made me cry and dug up old feelings about the Teen Titans episode, you did a wonderful job analyzing it
The cartoon did it better. Terra wasn't the obnoxious, unlikable, yet bland character with very little personal stakes like in the comics. They made sure she had a personal connection to all the Titans, and gave her a clear motivation: to gain control and stop being afraid of herself. We get to see how she goes off the rails, and they wisely left out the sex stuff with Slade. She was treated as an actual teenage girl, and her powers
The only thing I wished the cartoon would have done was actually have her go on missions with the Titans, to further drive home her betrayal. It felt awkward how after she joins, she seems to be deliberately left out of the story until her betrayal.
The original cartoon was so well written they could polish a turd and it'd still shine brighter then any diamond.
Rick O'Shay She was alive and still had her memories of the Titans with her. She just decided not to be a titans anymore
The cartoon turned her into a generic traitor. Who still wanted to be good. The beauty of the original Terra was that she was a chain smoking psychopath. She literally fooled everyone because she had no morals. That's what made her work in the comic, that's what fooled people and ultimately lead to her being one of the most memorable characters in comics history.
The show? Meh, generic throw away betrayal. Done a billion times in well.. just about everything. Sure it "added complexity" because the whole thing was to make her a traitor.. Not make her into a spy that never was an actual member of the group. It's an entirely different feel and one that's been done to death with ease.
So yes.. unique unexpected is vastly better than tried and true story we've seen before. Why? Because when Terra is revealed as a spy in New Teen Titans, the readers are shocked. When Terra was revealed to be a traitor in the cartoon? It was expected. It wasn't a shock. It was just a typical cliched storyline that'd be done before.. and honestly, lazy writing.
Jan Arrah betrayal arcs are about more than surprise
Jan Arrah Except they ruined a good villain doing that by making Slade into a pedophile they ruined any chance of people liking him even the joker couldn’t get away with shit like that
I firmly believe the cartoon did it better than the comic. Terra and Raven are my favorite Titans because of the show.
That's awesome! People can sometimes criticize adaptations (live action or otherwise) but if it gets people to enjoy a story or character, then it was worth it.
Yeah, there's something so much more compelling to me about Cartoon Terra's tragic downfall and eventual redemption, than Comic Terra, who just seems like a scumbag.
I'd give the original story a shot. It's a different kind of narrative and can be just as compelling.
Wow finally someone who likes both Terra and Raven
Terra is a whore. Theres nothing tragic about the vulnerable willingly turning against their former friends. Hopefully Terra will be left alone in the new season and not he brought back like she wanted to on the cliff hanger ending
so beast boy went to a high school with no problems from the children there
I suppose so
Zed Miller He can turn into an adult tea Rex I don’t think most of them are dumb enough to try bullying the kid who could literally care of them limb from limb as soon as he gets angry

@@charlottewalnut3118 yeah, I suppose so or perhaps he'd turn into that monster from season 3's "the Beast Within"
@@xultra_violetx exactly
A lot of people wanted the old version of Terra, but I absolutely love what they did here. Her character was more developed, and in turn developed everyone else, too. Raven, Beast Boy, and Slade all got developed through her arc.
She was relatable particularly to me. The old tera from the comics is just a d*ck.
Great video! Now i'm going to cry in the bathroom
I'd be lying if I said that wasn't the intended effect, so thank you!

Aw shucks, thank you!
This was beautifully done. You can tell you did your homework man. The footage you showed, the editing, and the music choices especially just made this excellent.
What's the music
"If being good was easy, everyone would be."
“Mental issues do not excuse bad actions” wow my first video of you and already you’re hella good at explaining ....literally that one sentence should be said to the world with all these “mental issues” as an excuse for criminals to avoid jail
It depends. Terra’s issues were from an emotional and psychological trauma. She was damaged but not insane as there was nothing wrong with her. She should be given leeway and forgiveness but still take responsibility for her actions.
To a certain extent. Her mental disorder wasn't debilitating. Something like scheziophrenia which is the worst mental disorder should in my opinion be excusable because they're hardly even concious when making their actions. You can't morally judge someone who isn't in a condition to make reasonable choice. However Terra was always concious of her actions. Something like depression, low self-esteem and anxiety is definitely not reason to commit crime because you can still be a fully functioning cognitive being. Those with serious mental disorders should hit the asylum, not prison.
Elijio Ledesma In House of Markov it’s revealed she was under mind control drugs so yeah.
Fuckin preach
Elijio Ledesma Criminals with mental issues don't just walk free because they have those issues. They get sent to institutions that are equipped to better deal with them. The idea that we need to get revenge on people by sending them to jail actually breeds more crime. Very often, people who are sent to jail for minor crimes come out of it as hardened criminals, rather than as people who are now too scared to continue their petty crimes.
The goal of prison should be to reform, not to get revenge, and if it's clear that prison won't achieve this, it is best not to send people there.
The only exception is when someone is obviously so far gone that they can't ever be trusted in society again. In this case, the goal should be to protect innocents by keeping these psychos away from anyone they could harm, FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. It should not be to make them miserable for a few years, and then release them back into the world to do more of their nasty deeds.
There is a major problem in the way American culture views the prison system. Other first world countries do this much better, and as a result, have much less violent crime to deal with.
Wow. Just wow. This was an amazing and heartfelt video. It made me appreciate even more the reason that I am glad that I watched the Teen Titans 2003. Thank you. Hope many successful days for your channel. Just gained a new subscriber.

I will never forget Tara. She was such a well written character..
And still is, she just needs more to go on
Better than she was in the comics
@@shaquanphillips266 what’s wrong with her comic book counterpart?
@@donathan2933 she's much less sympathetic than in the show.
@@shaquanphillips266 yeah true actually 😂. Terra in the show is not a bad person, she was a morally gray character who wanted to do good lacked enough self esteem, trust and good people to do so
Terra in the animation was so believable. A mess of emotions and hormones. And had so much potential to continue on the story
My dude, Tara was my favorite character as I felt growing up she was HIGHLY relatable with. I love how there is a touch of poignancy in the editing, man! I am feeling this to the core
It was definitely the intended effect! Thanks!
I couldnt relate to her, she went back and forth with the bullshit, did a copout of refusing to actually be the hero she said she supposedly was at the start of the arc etc. "When you can do the things I can but you dont and then the bad things happen. They happen because of you". And that's a spiderman quote, Terra was a character that never really grew and instead only cared about herself and what she felt or wanted.
This really hit me in the feels. People are always confused when I tell them she is my favorite super hero, because I can relate to her so much but I can't explain it. This is the best video I have seen of Terra. It really choked me up.
We become attached to characters that reflect our decisions or mannerisms. There's nothing odd about relating to Terra, so I'm glad this was able to make you feel the way you did!
I grew up watching the old super hero shows of the 70's and 80's as reruns, as well as Batman the aniamted series and Superman the animated series, in addition to all the live action super hero movies. Despite this, when i think of superheroes done right I always picture Teen Titans first. The frienship of beast boy an cyborg is one of the most beleivable friendships in super hero fiction, same goes for the love story between beast boy and terra and between starfire and robin.
You pronounce "louse" as if it sounds like "loose". It rhymes with "mouse" and is the singular of "lice". It's the origin of the word "lousy".
This and "naivete". Twice!
I am not a native english speaker and I did not know this,I did not expect to improve my english while reading the comments to such a good video ...or should have I?
Was looking for this comment lol
When I first watched this show, I was about the age of the Titans. I think about exactly where I was and what I felt watching this show, and who I would secretly identify with and secretly identify my friends with. The whole Terra storyline is my favorite part of this series, it got me good. And it REALLY got me when we were forever left hanging at the end of that school scene as BB runs out the door into the white. Yet there's still something definitive about that ending. Now when I look back, I realize how much older I am, and it really makes me miss that time and the people that I identified the other characters with. I miss being that age. And certainly miss thinking my problems then were the biggest in the world...because, dang, if only I knew what was coming, I think I would have not worried so much.
Well said.
Um, my fair sir, Trouble in Tokyo is NOT about Starfire. It seems more about Robin with Starfire 2nd in priority.
I would say it is; more specifically it's about her AND Robin. It's her most focused narrative outside of one off episodes like "Troq" or "Stranded".
Each Titan got a season dedicated to their struggles (Season 5 is iffier but still had a focus on BB), so I don't believe it's a stretch to say Trouble in Tokyo was focused on her.
Core Ideas Thanks for elaborating but I hope the new season in 2019 is about my girl I always thought she got shafted in the show.
She did get shafted in the show in terms of having a full arc. There are wonderful episodes with Starfire as a focus, but she never really had a full story arc.

That's what i thought but since i watched this video i know now it more empathy than sympathy because i use to know a lot of people like Terra who had these kind of problem relating to people. @@dippster357 perhaps so
Really good video, Terra was always my favourite character growing up. I'm excited that this video wasn't just shitting on her but actually looking into her as a character.
Conclusion: Teen Titans did this story much much better
Raven would have easily beat Terra in her demonic form. But for the sake of the plot they had to nerf her.
hey it's jeff from the overwatch team sooooo we kinda had to do a nerfing update sorry about that.
I think that they were trying to drive home that she was uncontrolled in demon mode. She did a lot of stuff, but a focused person could get the best of her.
The whole point of Terra 'defeating' the Titans was for the Titans to see if she'd really, truly gone to the dark side and joined Slade. They lost purposefully. They didn't go all out. Terra did.
@@cyanyde4950 Don't worry, Bastion isn't getting nerfed. In fact, we'll give him a buff, again!
Raven warped Azarath into a cursed dimension after her birth immediately and the sky turned black by her demonic presence in the comics and earth would be a small ball in Azarath realm.
And that’s the reason why Terra is one of my most favorite cartoons characters ever 😊
This is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. That arc was one of the most influential stories I ever encountered. I cried as a child watching it and now I've cried as an adult watching this. Thank you for that.
MY CHILDHOOD!!!!! The Terra story arc will always be my favorite of any show I used to watch as a kid. IDC what anyone says, Terra was my favorite character and you summed it up BRILLIANTLY why.
I find it strange that more people aren't discussing the fact that Young justice is actually just Teen Titans updated to the current DC universe...
Without beast boy
@@FumanyuX What? His creation is the subject of an episode in season one and he's in almost all of season two
@@Crick1952 Ah I think he confused the Titans movie with the Young justice tv series. I think they had blue beetle as a replacement for beast boy in that movie, along with R18 Strafire, Motherbox Cyborg, Damien Robin, and child actress Raven.
I wouldn't say that. Their depiction of Miss Martian is like a backwards case of Terra, making a sympathetic character unlikable. It also has a few to many cases of taking villains and making them less than what they are(Ultra-humanite becoming dumb muscle when he's one of the smartest villains in the comics, Joker being downplayed to the point of wasing the voice they cast), while Teen Titans took random nobody villains and made them much more elaborate characters(Mad mod becoming a DC version of Arcade, somehow adapting Dr.Lights creepier aspects into a kids show.)
Young justice was a comic as well. It's wasn't the same book and its not the same show.
This show had genuine heartbreak. The people may not be real, but the feelings it invokes in the open hearts of its avid viewers are. That's why this show was so memorable. The action was good, but the people, the situations, and the emotions are what made it. That's why it will always be one of the best animated shows, and why I will always have a special place in my heart for DC.
How does the Trouble In Tokyo movie center around Starfire??? Its definitely more Robin centric which kind of just places Starfire in a love interest role.
GIVE US A STARFIRE SEASON 2kFOREVER
It was probably easier to say that than admit that the show was canceled before she got a spotlight season

Bitch cartoons are for kids
Terra always was my favorite character and arc in Teen Titans. This just broke my heart all over again.
Bruh it’s 4;17 rn and I honestly wasn’t expecting to cry
This shows both a character you rarely ever see. A semi main character, not just some lowly side character, go through an amazing story arch, and it wasn't for good, or evil. But for the character themselves.
This also shows how badass Slade is. That unlike most other villains was both strong physically, mentally, and emotionally. And that he stayed strong, and wasn't beaten by a Deus Ex 'Friendship' or 'Good Guys Always Win' power, not grows weaker or stupid as the show goes on. He's just as good and powerful at the end of the show, as when he started. He was never boosted, or nerfed, to fit the story. Instead the story fit HIM.
It's insane how they're able to make a regular guy seem so poweful without resorting to making the characters idiots to justify it.
Indeed. Another good show that did it at first, was through most of the original Dragon Ball with kid Goku. Where most of the 'Power' for characters, was based on fighting styles and how good the people were at fighting, and not just how much they can stand still screaming.
jirodyne No he died in a volcano and had to be brought back by an actual demon I’m pretty sure that’s being used for the plot Trigon could have used anyone why the one most likely to betray him.
Core Ideas He’s a super soldier not normal like Captain America
Cause Slade is the only being that knows the Teen Titans, and was never beaten by them. Terra beat him and killed him, not the Teen Titans. And again, he knows the most about them all, including about Raven.
But more than that, normally Slade wouldn't have been able to be freed, and would 100% be under Trigon's control and watch. But 2 things happened.
First being that Trigon 'Won', he ruled over Earth and that dimension and universe now. He let his guard down. After all, he already won, who cares if a pawn changed states from dead to life, when nothing Slade does, did, or could do would even harm Trigon?
Secondly, while Trigon relaxed his guard because he won, Slade got Robin to team with him, and agreed to help him be revived. No longer being watched, and not controlled and kept in check by Trigon, THAT is when he finally went awol and escaped servitude and reviving, while Trigon was defeated.
We never saw Slade again after that, but how many people can say they were inservus to the literal Devil while being dead, and not only escaped from the Devil's control, while the Devil was being defeated, but also Revived and got to live again? There are VERY few being, all across all forms of Media, Culture, History, and Stories that can make that claim. Especially few, where the guy who did that, was a Straight up Villain to the core.
Damn, really well made video. Personally Terra was one of the best characters. A really good example of how flawed characters are often the most relatable/entertaining to watch. Those flaws make them feel much more real and tangible.
Exactly
Nearly 15 years after the show's conclusion and i'm just now starting to understand the ending in "Things Change." We're going to lose people in our lives and move on, but that's okay because at the end of the day, the ones who have been there through thick and thin will continue to. No matter what our deepest wants and desires are, until we decide to let go, we will never truly move on to better things just around the corner if we continue to hold on to the past. Turns out that Teen Titans ended on a better note than I initially thought, it just took a journey to arrive toward this epiphany.
I love how terra's hair always fell to cover the half of her face that Slade has black it's like a visual que to make you think of Slade subconsciously like yeah shes helping the Titans (brain oh she's a good guy) hair falls in face (brain wait Slade oh frak don't trust her don't do it)
That's a brilliant observation. In fact, it gives new meaning to the last scene with Terra, when she sacrifices herself to stop the volcano eruption in the final episode of the season. While speaking to Beast Boy for the last time, she looks him in the eyes, brushes her hair completely away from her face, smiles brightly, and says, "It's never too late." These were her last words.
It's one of the few genuine smiles she ever conveys, and it may be the only smile where she shows her entire face. It's a great ending scene. Words just don't do it justice! I highly recommend watching it.
Beautifully narrated and executed video. It still hurts to see such a great series desecrated and twisted into the most recent iteration.
But back on track, fantastic video. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! I put a lot of time and effort into these videos and I'm happy it came out well.
As for TTG, while I may enjoy it, we still have the 2003 show and a potential 6th season. It's not gone!
Actually, the voice actors of the show (Khary Payton in particular) had said that a 6th season is never happening. So no, it's gone forever. All we have left are the old seasons, a relic of the past.

When Terra was turned to stone when I first saw it in the original tv show, I was absolutely devastated. She was such a great character and it was devastating what ended up becoming of her. I never found out if they were able to reverse her condition in that series. It broke my heart.
Edit.
Watched this whole video. Holy crap.
TT was always a show that I felt treated me like I was smart enough to get the subtle tones and ideas behind it. The Terra arch was and still is one of my favorites because you can really see the character development in her and BB. Really breakdown.....now I'm off to rewatch the series from the start.
TT + avatar .... best western animations in the last 20 years
American animation gets a lot better than that....saying TT and avatar were the best in 20 years is just straight up false.
they are great, largely because they combine the western cartoon an comic mediums with anime. you get a good mix of styles
Bojack Horseman is really good though. And I don't even like sitcoms.
Watch young justice
@@phiwokuhleqwabe2097 Young Justice was the next logical step for Teen Titans. I think if Teen Titans had continued, and was written for a growing age group in mind (like how the Harry Potter books were, which is genius), we'd have seen a Teen Titans not unlike Young Justice in themes, tones, and messages.
Judas Contract....oh, the memories....TT was some cutting-edge stuff back then...still have my original issue!
I really loved this! I think the transitions between the parts made it seem a little incoherent at times, but you were so thoughtful in your take and this was such an interesting subject, as I never read the comics! Beautifully done!
This is a flawless execution, this video brought me to tears, congratulations for bringing not only a joyful feeling of nostalgia but also presenting a second view into something i wasn't able to understand at my age at the time, not only was the script amazing, all the images and scenes added up wonderfully to convey exactly what you were trying to say, thank you so much
Can't believe I've only ran into this video now. It's absolutely beautiful. Hope that you find the time and passion to keep making amazing videos like this.
I loved the way Teen Titans show handled the story of Tarra. I really felt betrayed and was shocked when Terra betrayed the Titans. Terra and Beast Boy’s break up was really sad. Also what you said at the end was true. Terra wasn’t a hero nor was she a villain. She was just Terra.
Idk how I came across this video but your personal input towards the end about mental health made me realize a lot of myself and so thank you!
This video has been in my recommended for so long and I finally got around to watching it, and I'm so glad I did. This was a truly beautifully cut, well voiced, thoughtful video with amazing music to set the mood. Everything about this video was clearly done almost as a labor of love. Well done!
Five out of five stars! Brilliantly done, good sir. Teen Titans is definitely one of the animated shows that has stuck with me through the years since its bittersweet end. Seeing one of its most impactful stories described with such depth and passion really underlines the respect you have for both the artists and their work. The tragedy of Tera has never been more poignantly revisited for me than right here and now.
dude...this was a very well thought out piece of analysis and one of my fav videos now. keep up this level of content my dude i was almost moved to tears!
Thank you! Happy to hear it sparked such strong emotions for you!
Killed it my guy
Thank you!
Ugh greatest commentary on a show ever. So many chills, and emotional ups and downs. Amazing work
Could you do a comparison video of the Teen Titans: Judas Contract comic and the animated movie adaptation?
They're all most alike frame by frame and I wanna know your thoughts on it.
A wonderful video and a wonderful return to form.
Welcome back, brother :)
Thanks Lewis for always being there for me. You're the best :)
WELCOME BACK MAN! Glad to see you’re doing well, and excellent video!
This was always my favorite arc from this show and I only read Teen Titans books as a teenager because I was exposed to this show. It definitely has it’s ups and downs, but Terra as explained in this video, was handled almost flawlessly. I can’t wait to see if this shows return next year builds on that.
This was really well edited. You should be seriously proud of that, man.
Also, the content was pretty good. I think I appreciate the Teen Titans' Terra over what you described as the original. A sociopath is way, way less interesting and impactful than a traitorous friend. For me, the most powerful scene in the Titans tv show, one that encompassed the sheer rage borne of betrayal, was the one where the five titans finally reunite and take down Terra in that ominous fog.
That. That was what it all meant.
There can be Socipathic Characters that can be compelling and Well written....
The Original version of Terra wasn't and the Fact that she's used as a scapegoat in the original story, while Deathstroke's Abhorent actions in The Judas Contract just get swept under the rug in its aftermath makes me feel that the comic version is really Overatted....
Just when I thought I couldn't appreciate this show more, this video proves me wrong. This was honestly so meticilously well crafted that I'm tempted to rewatch all the episodes involving the Judas contract while keeping all the points of the video in mind and/or a note.
You have a clear talent for this art. So if I ever find someone who'll find interest in the thing's you're discussing, I will show them without hesitation!
A beautifully constructed video! Similar to others here, having known nothing of Teen Titans, I still found myself caught up in your brilliant summary of what The Judas Contract is, and how the 2003 adaptation so deftly portrayed it. The amount of empathy in your description of Terra in the 2003 adaptation was also wonderful!
Thank you so much! I've struggled with my narration since I started this channel, so it's great to hear I've gotten to a point that it's become a focal point of praise. It means a lot!
That moment when you do something better than the original
I normally don't comment or like videos but could not stop watching it to the end. The breakdown was amazing and everything was so easy to understand. Just want to say thanks for this amazing video that we know you put a lot of time into and hopefully all viewers will support you and the video!
With the likely final season of Teen Titans on the horizon, the final episode of Teen Titans back in the day will hopefully be expanded on. As far as my research has gone, they planned to bring it further before the shows cancellation. The end of the Teen Titans Go movie is a pretty safe bet in my opinion.
You know what hurt is that Teen Titans was a great show had everything going for it and I love the show, then it got canned and when I found out that they show was getting renew I was happy because I want to see what happen to the Titans. I wanted to see how the new relationship between Robin and Starfire worked out. I wanted if Terra comes back again. I want to see so many great things that could have been fleshed out. But NO!!! We get ttg. A show that throws everything in the face of the fans and even makes fun of them because of it. The thing that hurts the most is that we are most likely is going to see Teen Titans come back. But here's why it hurts and it makes me sick to my stomach. The shows is being brought back thought the teen titans go movie. In some kind of way it taints the original series, the characters, the stories and the fans by having it brought back through that movie ending.
Yeah. That's what I thought too. Every single reference to the original series is all about joke or to trick the fan. That's probably the worst part about ttg. I'm okay with a brand new comedic Teen Titan but trying to brought up the original show only to gain view and such is extremely disgusting.
Yeah, they didn't have to use these characters at all and that show would work fine. Or if they really wanted that brand recognition they shouldn't have made it a shell of the former series. Change the designs a bit, maybe even the voice actors. They clearly wanted to ride the popularity of this particular incarnation and create a more slice of life show but it spends way too much time insulting the work it's based on and the fans it obviously wanted to attract. Not to mention it being unfunny and cringe-worthy.
I feel like TTG goes out of its way to troll and make fun of fans of the original cartoon.
Terra should not be brought back.
@@ScionStorm1 I mean when CN is now ran by morons like Nickelodeon is it's hard to be surprised by anything anymore.
I just found your channel and picked this video out of curiosity.Truly good writing you have, and needless to say about how much you investigate for your videos. The editing is solid, despite for some little details that I can't appear to find now (there was a moment in which you showed three pictures, and after a bit made them fade. I'm pretty sure one of those faded later than the others, but it's something minor to look at anyways). But over all, good work man, you deserve a lot more subscribers for this! You have a good future.
About The Judas Contract: quite the adaption is Teen Titans ain't it? Made quite the job with Terra, and while I actually haven't watched much of the show, now I'm interested in doing so. I can easily see why it's regarded as a beloved adaptation, I'll enjoy watching it for sure.
Excellent video. The dissection, analysis, atmosphere, tone and editing were are all great. Both intense and deep yet soft and a bit romantic. I loved it. Great job, dude! 👍
Thank you so much for this video, amazing video essay. You've sparked up my love for the Teen Titans again and just made me realize how much of a unique and real character Terra is. Great job sir.
I almost forgot that this show's design forTerra (And my introduction to the character) was the inspiration for the design of a new female character I'd made in my own story, which I eventually rebooted and turned that secondary character into the main character with some redesigning. And now I'm like "OH YEAH! This character was inspired by the design of Terra on Teen Titans...... random.)
Also never knew she was a bad guy. I thought she was tricked or mind controlled. Never really got to see a lot of this show. So when I saw she was a villain when I just HAPPENED to see some of Teen Titans Go and realized that was based more on the comics, I was kinda surprised. I liked her better as a protagonist even with steering off the right path. She just... doesn't seem like a bad guy.
I never understood comic fans who hate the animated series. From what they said I had such a picture. They destroyed the character, making a deeper, ambiguous and realistic person from the almost caricature villain-psychopath? What kind of nonsense? I certainly understand what Wolfman wanted to achieve. He wanted to show how some people can deceive and use others. And this is good, especially for the development of characters. And for its time it was really something innovative, but it does not cancel the fact that now it just does not work.
And even then the comic books idea of what makes someone evil or not was incorrect.
I mean, I think it does still work now, some of the greatest serial killers were expert manipulators and outwardly inoffensive, but the show writers wanted to do something different/more with the character.
What the comic did was..brilliant..using your own media to manipulate your readers into following into the same footsteps that your characters do and then make the characters and the audience become one at that exact moment is nothing but fucking masterful!
That being said the character herself isn't a well written character at all.
I understand why some people would get upset that the story isn't the same especially after getting their minds blown in a way that a comic or series like this can so rarely achive.
Only other series I can think of that might have done something like this is game of thrones..it is rare and really impressive!
but a cartoon meant for younger audience would never be able to do it in the same way..especially not with the same character.
People would already know about it before it happened and I dare say it would have made the show worse throwing in a 1 dimensional character with no other motivation than "I wanna be evil!" into all of these very well written characters.
She would have just become another "mehh whatever traitor!" character rather than this beautifully tragic and misunderstood character that seemed almost human to the point where I legit cried as a child when she betrayed them..
It was like losing a friend myself not unlike how I feel like some comicbook readers must have felt..exept I saw why she did it..and could see where she was coming from at least slightly..and could understand why everyone was acting the way they were..seeing Raven suddenly show anger and sadness towards her was really fucking powerful! and was exactly how I felt back then..
No doubt the comicbooks way of dealing with her was amazing but the character itself was flat and annoying the cartoons way of using her was another kind of brilliant that I seriously respect!
Marv's comic line of TT was briliant. But the TT show couldn't follow such a comic line since it was truly mature, so they had to be creative. The New Teen TItans is my favourite comicline, but I love Teen Titans show since despite the changes it worked. That can't be said about the newer animated movies, which are meant for more mature watchers. Tara being truly evil is not something expected, but that's true for psychopaths (or sociopath better say). She's up there with Joker, you can't trust them. TT cartoon version took out that psycho trait and that's why the show's creators went with the path they created. Show's Tara is a much better person, but Marv's Tara is a breath of fresh air, one of the best manipulators if I can say so myself. Like heck, she manipulated Slade who though he was manipulating her
Why cant a character just be a sociopath and only want to sleep around with an older man such as deathstroke? Does everything need to be angsty and emotion filled to reflect the audience, considering some teenagers can be heartless and cold without any damaging influence? Wouldn't that make it more deep if the reasons as to why she backstabbed them wasn't because of a puppet master pulling the strings like a sunday morning cartoon?
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and well put-together discussion! I grew up with this show and rewatch my favorite arcs periodically, and Terra's is one that I love more and more each time I go through it. I love that you highlighted her volition in her actions - that's one of the reasons I actually really appreciate "Things Change". I understand why some people were unsatisfied with it and I agree that it is an abrupt and downer way to end the show's final season, but for me it always drove home Terra's agency as a character. It reminds us that the things she went through during her time with the Titans were completely different from what Beast Boy perceived, and even as the audience we only saw a fraction of her struggles.
The fact that she refuses to go back to the hero life despite the pleading of her love interest lends so much weight to her experiences as an individual and really solidifies the fact that there are some things you can't move past so easily, and some things she has to deal with in her own way. It's a decision that reflects how much she's been through and it makes her feel like a real person, not just a character bound to the whims of convenient plot devices regardless of whether it makes sense in the context of their experiences.
This is a decision she made for herself, free from any outside influence or manipulation, and it's sad and bittersweet, but it's hers.
Anyway I love Terra and I love Things Change and I loved this video and the extra insight it gave into her comic counterpart - I see what they were going for and I think that's cool, but personally I much prefer this version. You had a great, spot-on analysis, and I look forward to checking out your other videos! Thanks again!
I like your documentary-style and then the music tech in there is just appropriate and adds a lot of ambience well done
