Josh, you did it again. Took this advice to the field today, combined with tips from older videos, really keeping my eyes focused on my disc during reach back and making sure my arm stays level, getting a good spread and stagger with the legs, driving from the legs up through the body. I broke my personal distance record today, with the fastest OS driver I've ever thrown. 375' with an ESP Nuke (13,5-1,3) Keep up the good work coach!
Josh - as a serial swooper, this video made it click. I remember the earlier videos you put out about it was all about keeping the elbow up (which didn't help) I definitely let the arm rise on reach back and the shoulder rotation was something I never considered before and I'm 100% doing that. Can't wait to get on the field and try these tips!
Thank you for this video! That second physical que about turning the disc inside out was a massive, instant help. It fixed my arm immediately and I was throwing +30ft farther with a lot more snap immediately. It was an "ah hah!" moment. THANK YOU!
Good timing for the video recently been focusing, on the shoulder rotation which has added some power. Been working through the different shoulder plane angles. I'll keep the elbow suggestion in mind as I worked on it. Ty
Good stuff. Might be worth letting people know that if they've always externally rotated, fixing that issue may cause a lot of strain on their elbow at first until it gets used to it. Some people seem to instinctively externally rotate to protect their elbow from opening on the swing plane and you can get to 65mph+ with external rotation. If they fix that issue, they may end up snapping their elbow open on the flight plane at that same speed when they've never done it before at all.
This is one of my issues, thank you. I’ve also had a time where I was dealing with golfer’s and tennis elbow, lateral, medial and ulnar nerve issues ALL at the same time! Any extra ideas on keeping that proper shoulder rotation? That key truly made me start to feel like my elbow was driving instead of swooping.
This video was a true eye opener to me! You described my problem exactly, in a way I have never seen it described. You cannot believe the amount of frustration (and yes, desperation) I have had struggling with this issue, never really understanding exactly why I tended to drop my elbow. Now, how to fix it? You say you have fix videos in Patreon? Is that true? Can you elaborate please?
Any chance you have thought about injury instruction on this channel? I started and learned disc golf by throwing forehand, and didn't have any issues for years. I then started to hurt my arm, while throwing forehand, and was forced to switch to backhand. At this point I create pain in my arm for about 30%-50% of my forehands, and I have a friend who has the exact same problem with backhand, while he is learning how to throw backhand (he has no pain forehand). It would be awesome if you broke down down how you can mess up a throw, and address the pain that comes with it. For instance, I can throw a forehand (maybe 250-300 if I throw it well, and smooth), but it usually causes pain in my shoulder and tricep area.
Heey Josh, Thanks for this great video! I got a question though, a lot of times my drives are way too high, but not necessarily nose up. When I rewatch myself, it’s because I lift my right shoulder and I lead my shoulder upwards, could this be the problem and does that mean I don’t lead enough with my elbow?
So i have a weird problem where no matter where everything looks good but i reach back the elbow dips slightly as i pull thru and the my arm unwinds into a slight hyzer. on video, almost every throw wether its a different flight angle, or distance, they all come out on this slight last minute hyzer. and this weird last minute wrist issue cuases wobble on the extreme level, like can't find a video where they can replicate the amount of wobble. and i can throw 350-400 pretty regularly max, and on a great day i can touch the high 400-500 range. but this wobble creates inconsistency across the board, speed, angle, stability, release point...etc. I feel that my problem is not keeping the disc on plane in the throw because i can not "pour the coffee" like to the level most people can bc of lots of injuries to my wrist. i tend to compensate in some way so that my wrist can stay in a somewhat fixed position id love to see a video combining yalls theories on wobble and the elbow dip. If i had money to afford patreon sub id def submit some form videos.
So, I know you showcased the one FPO player w the elbow dip, but I’ve also noticed Calvin H and Paige Pierce do it as well… so my question is, it’s only problematic based on the result? I.E. if you’re seeing nose up, and throwing high, then this is one thing to modify in an effort to eliminate those errors? Or… if you were their coach, would you try and correct it on their form because they could be doing even better?
Weirdly I seem to be having the opposite issue lately. I keep throwing too low, I don't know if it's because I'm keeping my elbow too high and my arm is going high to low in the throw?
I've been working on "turning the key" Has anyone else struggled with elbow dip related to trying to turn that wrist over. I believe @blitzdg mentioned it in his last video.
I'm confused. Are you supposed to drive the elbow OR maintain the 90 degree angle between the elbow and shoulder? Wouldn't the latter mean you shouldn't drive the elbow?
I am an engineer. I am a student of all math and science. Has anyone addressed the mechanics of disc circumference. They all vary quite substantially. My best thrower, ( as a real beginner) is small in circumference.
Interesting stuff. Thanks as always. I do have a question: Around ~2:38 (ruclips.net/video/GYxID75JlI8/видео.html#t=2m38s), you talk about how there's a range of elbow height. Matty O, high. Simon, low. Others.. in between. Other coaches seem to insist that Simon's elbow is WAY too low for people who aren't Simon - ie, any rec, amateur, noodle arm, what have you. Getting your elbow HIGH is paramount. Why are they so insistent on this, and you say "Simon height" is just fine? Or perhaps I'm not understanding, as usual. Anyway thanks as always for the videos and putting this stuff out there.
This video instantly made the internally rotated elbow click in my brain. Good stuff!!!!
Love the video! I think this is an underrated set of problems that needs more attention, and I'm so glad you focused on it. Thank you!

Yall are the smartest coaches on RUclips!!

Another gem tailored made for this guy. I've been working on it, will get myself on video and see what is happening in reality. Nachooooo indeed.

The shoulder rotation sounds exactly what I think I’m doing! Can’t wait to test this out. Thanks again for a great video! 💪
OH MY GOD This is my number one problem, havent been able to get it solved in a couple seasons. Never clicked so fast.
This was a blast. I'm totally doing the 3rd mistake with my drives. Going to the field now.

Thank you for this. I feel like I know what I’m doing wrong and what I need to change.
Good video. I am clearly extending WAY to high. Need to watch again for the elbow thing, but thanks so much.
This video plus robbie c’s video yesterday added 50 feet to my midrange throws today

The fixes are in this video if you are still struggling after that then I would consider Patreon
I’m convinced that when Josh needs a video idea, he just watches one of my videos 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
im def a swooper, i reach high on my reach back. I filmed myself so the evidence is pretty clear lol. Ty for the tips, will try tomorrow :)

Win the arm wrestling match. That's a genius cue right there!
Thanks for this!
THANK YOU

I’d have to take a look at it to know. There are lots of reasons to miss high
What camera and wireless mic set up are you guys using?
Sony FX3 and Tentacle sync and track E
I believe my problem is related to this. My driving shoulder tends to shrug up during the pull through. Likely because I’m muscling too much?
I’d say not enough elbow drive probably creating a traffic jam

What if you’ve drilled putting your arm in the right position to death but still swoop at the last second 😅
Weirdly I seem to be having the opposite issue lately. I keep throwing too low, I don't know if it's because I'm keeping my elbow too high and my arm is going high to low in the throw?
Could be a brace thing
What are the chances we could get a collab with Josh and Gannon Buhr?
That’d be a blast. What would you want the video to be about?
He's known for his spin rate on his throws. Curious on how/what that does to accuracy, distance, and disc flight.
@@chrisbarger6128 we just shot a video with someone that throws 1700+ rpm!
I've been working on "turning the key" Has anyone else struggled with elbow dip related to trying to turn that wrist over. I believe @blitzdg mentioned it in his last video.
Some people drop the elbow when turning the key. Common enough
I'm confused. Are you supposed to drive the elbow OR maintain the 90 degree angle between the elbow and shoulder? Wouldn't the latter mean you shouldn't drive the elbow?
Drive the elbow
From first hand experience. This works. Second..
Oh, cool thanks!
Calvin swoops also.
I am an engineer. I am a student of all math and science. Has anyone addressed the mechanics of disc circumference. They all vary quite substantially. My best thrower, ( as a real beginner) is small in circumference.
I always have the best intentions for field work but a round always seems to get in the way...
Have fun!
lol I’m not rotational or driving my elbow… guess it explains my (lack of) distance
Interesting stuff. Thanks as always.

The correct elbow height is dependent upon where you personally are strongest. For most people that’s between Simon and Matty
Finally 😢
Who has the worst form on tour but is still successful? Ricky? Who has the best form on tour but isn’t successful? Silas?
I would say Silas is a good read on someone that has great form but isn’t finishing well yet
Same video but every time Josh says “drop” it’s replaced with Mikey’s “drop” from the intro
You gotta Waterboy it and imagine Col. Sanders' face where you want your elbow to strike.
swoop and elbow injury plagues me ;(
😢
i feel seen
👀
External rotation isn't the fancy word. Supinated is the fancy word for that rotation
Supinated tends to discuss the entire arm, including the forearm, which is why I didn’t use supinated. I was isolating the shoulder’s movement.
You expect people to have 40+ swing thoughts in a motion that takes less than 1 second. There is no way that can ever be successful.
You’re assuming things I never said. There is no way that could ever be successful.
