  • Which one is better the Zippo or Vector Thunderbird torch insert? I have been using the Vector Thunderbird for years but once I saw that Zippo made their own insert I had to have one.

    I've had great success with my Thunderbird soft flame insert. It's the newer model with the clear plastic bottom. It fits a Walmart Zippo shell very snugly. It holds its butane and the flame adjustment works as it should. It's my "beater" EDC Zippo and has worked out well.

      Yeah, I still really like the Vector Thunderbird I think it's a great option. I just like the fit and finish of the Zippo brand better. I also think clear plastic would be the way to go. The one thing I don't like about the Zippo brand is I can't see how much fuel I have left.

    I’d definitely buy the zippo brand one. I should really pick some up before they are all gone. I have a few custom zippo’s but I only use them on special occasions. I am a smoker. I normally just use a bic lighter...

      I saw the ark insert and almost got one only because I've never used one. I don't think I would like the ark over the torch but then again not having to buy fuel would come in handy sometimes too.

    Hi Kory, I just bought the Zippo insert a few months ago when they first came out. I love it. I've been carrying the regular fuel Zippo's for about 40 yrs now. A few years back I bought a Thunderbird insert, the first one I had to send back, when I tried to fill it, nothing happened and it wouldn't work. I sent it back and they sent me one that did work. I've always had a problem for some reason trying to refill butane lighters. I would put the butane in and could never get the lighters to work again. With the Zippo insert I have had no problem! makes my life easier! just fill it for a couple of seconds than let the lighter sit for a few minutes before you light it Voila!
    Awesome stuff, I want to get a few more.

    • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  4 года назад +2

      Filling the Zippo insert is way easier than the Thunderbird. I feel like with the Thunderbird if you don't line everything up just right gas sprays out the side but with the Zippo, it just lines up on its own and stays that way until you're done. I really like the new Zippo insert I don't think I will ever go back to the Thunderbird again.

      @@newageselfreliance The Thunderbird insert I have doesn't have electronic ignition and works with flint and spark wheel. I didn't like that once you open the lid on the lighter, the fuel automatically starts coming out, so you have to light it right away or you're just wasting fuel.

    I have one Zippo lighter with a Zippo butane insert. It works very well. Today my order from Amazon arrived with a Thunderbird butane insert. I inserted it into an empty Zippo lighter case and it was stuck fast. Took an hour using my Leatherman tool to finally get it out. Thankfully I managed to not damage it too bad. I like the Thunderbird insert because I can see through it and judge when it needs to be refilled. Will use my Dremel tool to try and get this Thunderbird insert to go into and out of a Zippo lighter case. Even if I ruin it I at least learned something. As is it's unusable

      @@newageselfreliance I used a small sharp knife and scraped down the vertical tabs that are on each side of the lighter insert body. @@newageselfreliance So my Thunderbird came in and I was wildly impressed. They added a few upgrades from the one you reviewed. It now has a much clearer Thermoplastic, it looks much clearer than the old cloudy one that becomes opaque. They also changed the tooling of the clear part to put pressure on the wall of the zippo casing where the lid meets the bottom. The insert fits way tighter than the videos I have seen, and the hinge mechanism no longer operates the gas valve. It is an all-in-one design like the zippo one. In Canada these inserts are really similarly priced, but given the no questions asked warranty I am glad I got the Thunderbird. I am impressed.

    Well let's tell the truth it's not actually all metal construction. If you pull it out and remove the bottom metal plate it has a plastic tank. But I don't think the plastic tank is a bad thing. I've never had a thunderbird but I do have several zippo butane inserts and I love them. Out of 4 that I have bought I've only had one fail. And for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix. Hence why I found your video. The problem with it is it strikes fine but if you push the button all the way down the fuel cuts off. It worked fine for about 5 or 6 tanks worth of fuel. Which is about a month worth of use. I've opened it up but can not seem to get the guys out of the torch metal shell. But it vs the other zippo torches I own I've noticed that the button now goes down about an ⅛" further than the others. Hence cutting off the fuel flow. So something in it has shifted or bent or something under the button allowing it to depress to far. And it's hard as hell to only push the button passed the strike point slightly with out going to far and the the flame not staying lit. Some of the all the others work fine. Some of which are more than a year old. Would love to get this other one back up and running though.

    • @newageselfreliance

      The Zippo insert should have a two year warranty. You should be able to get ahold of them and they should fix it or replace it for you.

    • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  3 года назад

      After you fill the zippo you need to let it rest. Fill it up, wait 15-20 minutes for the butane to settle and it should work just fine.

    • @MissMan666
      @MissMan666 3 года назад +1

      @@newageselfreliance instructions says wait 2mins, but ok. I think i figured out why it is behaving like this, i think its simply the temperatur, whenever its handwarm, it lights every time and stays on. guess i should have known temp was going to affect butane lighter, but it seems the zippo is more sensitive than regular bic's etc.

    • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  3 года назад

      @@MissMan666 Yeah, the metal keeps it colder than the plastic Bic lighters. Glad you got it working. The cold fluid can make it act up too when you first fill it. That is why I always give it extra time to settle.

    I have the Thundebird insert I bought a couple of years back, and the plastic is completely transparent. Touche to Zippo for entering the pricing market agressively. Although I agree with you on full metal casing quality, I must say that seeing how much I've filled into the casing into the completely transparent version is a plus. From other things, I haven't checked, but what is the warranty for Zippo insert? I know Vector KGM gives a lifetime warranty (taken with a grain of salt of course)

    • @newageselfreliance

      The Zippo insert only has a two-year warranty. I think the clear plastic would be better than the white plastic I have in my Thunderbird insert.
