I'm addicted to trimming my hair.. Like my sisters see me and go, "oh.. You cut your hair again" 🤣🤣🤣.. I swear I see one split end or single strand knot and be like, "where are my scissors!!!!!!!!?? " I need help 😞
I will finger detangle first then I will go in with my wide tooth comb and my felicia leatherwood brush...But you are so right you cant keep cutting out your single strand knots...I had to get use to my hair having them so I try to keep my hands out of hair so that I'm not tempted to clip them out!!!🤗
Yes Mel! I had to get used to them too. It took me a while to realize it was okay. It think it’s a learning curve for most people who transitioned. I love the idea of finger detangling first. If I have to use a comb, I do the same exact thing.
😂 Put the scissors down! 😂 I don’t blame you. Before I gave up I used to search for them all the time lol! But I gave up “search and destroy” when I realized it didn’t make much of a difference in my hair. Hey, if you have the time and you think it helps, do you boo! 🙌🏾

I’m all the way from Lesotho🇱🇸. Love your channel😩✨ I’ve been natural for a year and a half and your channel really helped me get my hair together. Love you Toya❤️
Wow 😍 You all are teaching me so much about Africa. I just looked up where you live on a map because I’ve never heard of it. This world is so big and amazing!
I love the tip to embrace your natural texture and just go out. I'm gonna try this soon and just appreciate my shrinkage! I've never really done this. Thanks.
Yeeeeees!! I used to prevent myself from doing so many things because of “wash day” I’m so over it! If necessary, detangling can wait a few hours. Life is so precious! 💕💕💕
YES put the scissors down people! My friends who trim their hair regularly often ask me how I grew my hair so long and my answer is always just "I don't cut my hair". I haven't trimmed my hair since 2017 and my hair has grown 16 inches since then and surprisingly I don't have any split ends just a lot of single strand knots. Even with split ends, in the past, I was still able to retain quite a bit of length. If you're wondering, yes, I do have type 4 hair.
👏🏾 I grew up with a cosmetologist so I know the benefits of trimming, but I haven’t found that it’s necessary to do it more than a few times a year if you take decent care of your hair. Of course we’re all different, so I usually recommend a person just respond to what their hair tells them it needs.
I agree. By "trim their hair regularly" I meant friends who trim often unnecessarily. Like trimming every month when your ends are perfectly fine. I don't recommend never trimming to everyone but I definitely think everyone should give not trimming often a try.
you are right... i also don't trim my hair i just trimmed my hair once ever since i started growing out my hair in dec 2017. and i don't have a problem with it. my hair grows just fine and it's healthy, i have grown 10 inches all along and am not obsessed with length i just want my hair to be healthy and fuller like Toya's🤭🤭🤭
This video is everything!!!!! Thanks so much. High porosity, 4c hair in a hot, but humid environment isn’t easy!!!!! Length retention is my goal. But i do a lot of protective styling.
Yes yes and yes for the first tip! Adjusting to where you live. I live in Benin a west african country. The weather is really humid and hot here. My hair was not good until i started taking care of my hair according to the weather. By the way, i really love your channel. Very informative. ❤
Thank you Fénou! I agree. *sigh* I can’t wait to travel some more. You all are from such beautiful places. I’ve been searching the map every comment. 😂 I love it!
Thanks for mentioning how the difference in humidity can affect 4C hair a lot. It definitely makes the shrinkage WAY more real down south here in the U.S. LOL. Sidenote: Dunno why this popped in my head while watching this, but you'd be great on one of those talk shows like The Real.
I would often wondered why my hair would look dirty, even though I shampoo every week. I started doing a clay mask every four to six weeks. A clay mask or a chelating shampoo, removes hard water deposits from the hair. Once I rinse the mask out, I follow up with a moisturizing conditioner.
Thanks for the great content! A have a couple of quick questions. 1. When you refresh your hair with water mid week, do you seal the water with oil afterwards? 2. How did you achieve your hair look in this video? It looks really nice. Is it a twist out?
1. It depends and varies. I have a video coming out next week that will answer a lot of your questions. I mainly focus oil on my ends though. Spray with water, then later oil (if needed). 2. It’s a stretched twistout. Video coming next week! ❤️
I was seriously wondering about my millions of knots. I will now forget about them and stop stressing over it. It still grows, can detangle and have a huge fro, so, I´ll let it be. Thank you!!!!!
I finger detangled my hair for the first time last week and I must say that I am truly impressed. I kept my hair in a stretched style and my strands were looking B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. even on the next wash day. This could be my new routine. I'll keep you posted. P.S. Another great video
@LaToya Ebony... I agree with you. Finger detangling also adds a sensuous feminine component to self-care. My Hair gets matted when I’ve been inattentive =>frustration => yanking out knots with comb=> angry “at” my hair . Much better to love my hair with gentleness, to embrace my culture and femininity over time. Thank you for this helpful video
The SSK thing is some good advice I honestly hadn't really though of. My curl pattern is more 3c/4a, but I still do get them even though my hair is relatively "stretched" in it's natural state. I find them annoying cause they make my hair feel less smooth (and I tend to play with my hair), but they don't actually cause me any problems and no one can see them from a distance. I've never cut my entire head because of them, but when I'm bored I tend to sit there and cut individual strands of hair for a minute or two.
And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a session or two if you notice and have the time. It’s more for those who do it to a point that it derails length goals, you know? 💕
LaToya, I often hear your talk about 'stretching' the hair. Have you created a video for doing it without heat? I see other RUclips posts on it but...I don't trust them like that yet. Ha!
We need more videos like this because I found products are seasonal for me because I live in a moisture state Louisiana so high humectant base products frizz me out so I use them more in the winter time here cause it doesnt get to cold and glycerine free styles in warmer months! 😊

Now in the crown area mostly like in the lower middle of my hair, now that's the area that is very short, but trying to grow. I am wearing my hair in protective styles, being that I'm in the USN, it seems better to do at this time. Looking forward to your next video and hope you and the family are doing good. God bless!
Omg! This is my first time here and I think I've fallen in love ♥️ I've just subscribed. I love the scientific evidence and realistic perspective you share. I have 4c hair and honestly... Excellent video! I am loving your hair whether shrunken or stretched. I detangle briefly with my fingers before going in with a regular comb. Apart from trims every 4 months, the only time I cut single strand knots is if shed hairs get caught in them. Aside from that I just ignore the single strand knots. I don't have that many despite the fact that I wear wash and gos typically. Maybe that is because I have low to medium density hair. I embrace shrinkage because it gives me volume. Sending you love from Jamaica.

Ur right about the environment part I live in Tucson, Az it’s hot ass hell here I keep my hair in protective style moisture, moisture moisture all day with me!!!!
Yes to not obsessing over SSKs. Most of the time I don't even notice they are there cause they don't affect my hair. Yes to embracing shrinkage. I usually wash my hair on weekends and if I have somewhere to go I wear my shrunken wash n go. Sometimes I pin down the sides so it's cuter. I just don't see the reason to let my hair run my life.
Embracing my shrinkage is not a problem, its that my hair would tangle and knot and break most when it was shrunken. Its like all my curls fight each other for room unless I stretch them out lol
I understand. Everyone’s hair is different. My hair tangles a lot too. I’ve found that as long as I don’t go over 3-4 days, I can handle the detangling. If it’s just for a few hours so I can leave the house, I’ll do that too. But honestly, you should do what feels right for YOUR hair. Feel me? ❤️
I'm 18 and have nooooo idea how to take care of my hair. I'm just not patient enough to do routines and stuff. But watching your vids makes me want to take out my braids right now and actually try with my hair. (Also I have no idea what single strand knots are)

Ur right about the environment part I live in Tucson, Az it’s hot ass hell here I keep my hair in protective style moisture, moisture moisture all day with me!!!!
Ugh! I have extended family in Arizona. 🥵 It was over 100F degrees there! How do you do it?!
Lots of water!!!!!!!! it be like that hotter then fish grease
These are great tips. Thank you.

🙌🏾 I agree!!!
Tutorial on this hairstyle please. Love it!
It’s coming!!
We should change the name Wash and Go cuz let's be honest we don't Wash and then Go 😂😂😂
Girl, that’s the RUclips wash and go! 😂 I’ll do it every now and again, but I can’t. I’ll definitely, wash, detangle, moisturize, and go. Boop! 😂
😂
@M M I stopped doing it long time ago 😂😂
Embracing my shrinkage is not a problem, its that my hair would tangle and knot and break most when it was shrunken. Its like all my curls fight each other for room unless I stretch them out lol
I understand. Everyone’s hair is different. My hair tangles a lot too. I’ve found that as long as I don’t go over 3-4 days, I can handle the detangling. If it’s just for a few hours so I can leave the house, I’ll do that too. But honestly, you should do what feels right for YOUR hair. Feel me? ❤️
Just love your hair:)
Hi hi from Trinidad and Tobago
😆👋🏾💕💕
I'm 18 and have nooooo idea how to take care of my hair. I'm just not patient enough to do routines and stuff. But watching your vids makes me want to take out my braids right now and actually try with my hair.
(Also I have no idea what single strand knots are)
Botswana present🇧🇼🇧🇼🇧🇼🇧🇼 thank you LaToya!❤❤

AYYYEEEE! 🎉 🎉🎉
I rarely see any videos on normal porosity hair. Do you know of any influencers who make videos that you can suggest?
No, unfortunately I don’t. If I had normal porosity I would just listen to my hair and what it needs. You’ve got the ideal porosity.
😂😂😂 you make me happy!
🥰 YAY!!!
Hey LaToya, How do I stretch my hair/keep my hair stretched? What does it mean to have a conditioner with "slip"?
love the science...thank you
