This video is a THROWBACK to when i first got into lawn care and watched a ton of Handydad lawn videos 😀
Haha wayyy back in the old days 😁
Same here George…..welcome back HandyDadTV!
@rubenharris9241 Thanks 😊
As a gcsaa golf course agronomist who went to umass I love watching diyers like you that make a change in ppls grasses everywhere. So many liars in this game
A throwback that intelligent folks have learned to ignore. 😅
This is really fun. You sound like a genuine person which is nice to see instead of someone just promoting products.
I could be mistaken but perhaps the seed didn’t germinate because it fell on dead grass u like the bare dirt areas. Good luck and looking forward to seeing more.
Quite possibly. I got very inconsistent results with the slit seeder. Some areas germinated and are thriving. Others are still struggling. The drought hasn’t helped.
I'm subscribing just because u showed an honest video of it not looking perfect in the end. I struggled with a lawn in my new house this summer. I think my neighbors thought I was crazy. Aerated, dethatched, overseeded, hand watered 3 times a day, fertilized. We just got a ton of rain after a long dry summer and I finally see some progress. The house is a fixer upper so lots of work but the lawn is the only thing that's tested my patience because of the waiting.
Youre a kind soul. Please keep sharing because RUclips needs wholesome content like this.
I know the struggle is real! I bought several fixers but my daughter’s foreclosure took the cake. We made a whole series on that reno to inspire you! Check it out here: ruclips.net/p/PL6BBUHEzp51bPZp-jNxgVB4HQeonNW04r
Thanks for subscribing! Welcome to the family!
Cant wait for the follow up videos. Im really interested in the Air8
I’m committed to using it. 🤞🏻
I saw the thumbnail… and you got my attention lol
Thanks for letting me know 👍🏻
Let’s blame NJ’s rare drought streak for the poor results. I’m sure the grass babies will come through sooner than later! Great work. I’ve made my lawn the best in my neighborhood by watching your videos.
Thanks for the encouragement 🤞🏻
I didn't see the link for the power seeder.😅😅😅 Thanks for the video.
Nope. Not recommending that POS.
Can’t wait to see the update. YardMastery fertilizer is awesome. I use it and live in Charlotte just before it would rain and my fescue held up better than others in my neighborhood with that 90’s plus weather we had this and didn’t water it. Flagship and stress blend and some RGS and the Humic .
It’s embarrassing how bad that spreader was.
@@handydadtv we now know now so it helped us to know, but it will bounce back. It’s a lot of work. Interested on how that spreader seed does?
@@handydadtv GCI has the seed on their website not on YardMastery.
Hey Chris! I live in the Phoenix area and we use glyphosate here also to control weeds and runaway Bermuda grass. However, the rule of thumb here is to not expect anything to grow in a glyphosate treated area for 2-3 months. I know this is counter-intuitive to the way glyphosate is supposed to work. The problem might be the 59% of "other ingredients" that are in your vegetation killer. Some glyphosate formulations contain preemergence herbicides, which can affect seedling survival. I've found it difficult to not only find a glyphosate only product (might not be legal), but also to figure out what the "other ingredients" actually are. Good luck with the lawn, I hope it comes around! Love all your videos!
There were some RoundUp versions with extended timeframes but this Glyphosate product should only kill on contact.
Yeah that's not correct. You can seed with zero issues after using glyphosate. Maybe not immediately after but a week or two after your more than good. Done it dozens of times
Good luck on the new yard Reno!
I over seeded on sept 7, got about 1/4 inch of rain that night. None since, so I’ve been irrigating it. Cant wait to see the water bill. The temps are at least normal for this time of year now, but no rain yet. I’ve got germination, I’m hoping once it rains, or snows, it’ll start growing!
I feel your pain!
Good luck!
Thanks for the support!
Great looking gardens it will.get there . Next time if it has not been said use Preen in the beds and garden saves a lot later .
Thanks for the tip.
Good to see you back it. Love it especially since I’m in New Jersey as well I treat a few lawns in Lakewood area mostly also a few in Toms/manchester my recommendation to you since it a new property for you. You should get a soil test bring it into Site One landscape supply the guys really know their stuff and great seed and fertilizer choices
Thanks for the tip 👍🏻
@@handydadtvyour welcome
Sorry to see what happened. I've been so curious about that equipment. I always used my drop spreader, in 2 directions.
I never owned a drop spreader, just broadcast. I intended to seed in both directions but it was coming out too fast even when “closed”.
nice video, i would of dethached before seeding. i know i hate doing it in my yard. can't wait to see how it turns out for you!
The big issue with dethatching, aside from the effort, is disposing the dead grass. My recycling center won’t take it.
@@handydadtv It's not a problem getting rid of dead grass! If you have a truck, all you have to do is bag it, drive to a dumpster in the back of a store, or an apartment building and throw it in. You're not going to be doing it every day. It's only one time.
@slimdude2011 LOL that’s creative. Illegal but creative.
Give it time. They’ll pop through. It’s a marathon not a race
Good point.
That seeder looked like the problem. I had a similar yard and i scalped it, then used a dethatcher/scarifier on it and then used an aerator. Then used a regular broadcast spreader for the seed and the results were great. very even coverage.
I have no place to dump the waste. That’s my big issue. Plus the power seeder “should” work even in tall grass.
I use slice seeders for most of my renovations. I NEVER use the seedbox though. The grooves are great, both directions, but then I use a broadcast spreader for the seed.
Thanks
Great video, hoping you’ll post more lawn care videos and mower videos with the new lawn, after you retire of course 😂
Hoping that won’t be long!
When my yard was trashed from neglect, I used a tow type thatch rake to rip out the trash. Mowed it real slow to scalp and mulch the vegetation in a bad area. Threw down some Pennington seed and drug an upside down leaf rake across to work it in. I did not see much until spring when the entire area started turning green.. Its a craps shoot to burn down the weeds and start over.. Now I'm dragging a chicken tractor across the grass because fertilizer costs too muck to keep it green.
Thanks
Next time try a drop spreader on edges and multipleeee passes with broadcast spreader. Way more even coverage. Go heavy on bare ground, 8-10lb/1000. Probably should’ve had 2 bags off the rip just for the back for that size lawn
Good advice. Thanks.
I have a bag of gci tttf spreader elite, will be dropping it on the lawn tomorrow!
I have high hopes 🤞🏻
@@handydadtv same here! Cant wait to see your progress
I seeded 3 weeks ago after an aggressive scalp / dethatch / and core aerate , (LI) with no rain, the areas that get overlap of sprinklers came in excellent, areas that get hit but only at the ends or by one, really are behind. Seeing some rain in the forecast this week, will have to touch up some areas... I went with TTTF and KBG mix, KBG still may come up, but the TTTF should have all germinated by now... Tried Twin City Seed, a bit cheaper and arrives within a few days. Last couple of years I went with GCI seed. I had to spot kill a few areas and I left the dead grass, I probably didn't get good seed / soil contact because those areas did really poorly.
Thanks
In my experience a bigger lawn like that you really need to rely on mother nature with alot of rain and cloudy days for like 2 to 3 weeks. Once the seed dries out it's done.. I tried with a sprinkler one year and all I did was waste the water.
I definitely agree!
I think dethatching would have given you better seed to soil contact in those struggling areas. I hear you on aeration, but maybe implement the old fashion way in the trouble spots only.
My issue is disposing the grass. My recycling center won’t take it.
Just did a reno and got good results. I’m also in NJ…down by Ocean City. Where are you located?
Freehold
Since dipsosing the grass clipping was a problem, couldnt you have taken them to the local dump? You mentioned the recycle place wont take them but a dump surely would?!
It’s too late now regardless. It’s coming in, just slower.
Are you sure that Killzall you used is just glyphosate?
Yes. It’s 2 weeks later and thankfully we’ve had some rain. It’s clear, all of my issues were from the crappy spreader.
When using a slice seeder, never use the hopper. There are too many variables that introduce terrible results, including calibration, trottle and walking speed. What you should have done was sliced north-south, east-west and diagonally. Used a drop and broadcast spreader to sow the seed. Then add a light top dressing and use a lawn roller to ensure good seed to soil contact. That was a very expensive learning experience.
Thanks for the advice
I have to bring weed control up to my mom and brother in Ontario. They banned everything. It’s funny how all the lawns look great in the nicer areas only now. 😂
It’s only a matter of time before they ban it everywhere.
First kill weeds four speed mixed with any sage mix liller if needed than mow aerate seed and fert seems easier but im a professional lawn man lol good vieo tho and topdress if wanted compost
Thanks for the advice.
I think the your lawn is going to turn out great over time. The surfactant in the hydretain mixed with the meso could have stunted that germination a bit. Thats just a theory though.
Because I was pressed for time, I never applied the meso as a pre-emergent because the bare areas were already germinating. And I only put the Hydretain on the bare areas because they would be most dry.
@@handydadtv got it! I renovated with GCI’s blend a few weeks ago myself. I’m south of you down in Maryland. Mines is just starting to grow after a dry spell we had.
@jwilliamsloggedin Praying for rain this week! 🌧️
Might want to wear gloves when playing around with any kind of weed killer.
Thanks you’re right.
Oh heck yeah. Finally lawn videos. It’s like getting back with a old girlfriend 😂
The opportunity for more lawn content is the only reason I didn’t resist moving. It certainly wasn’t the mortgage rate!
You should've done your homework! All the dead grass should have been power raked and discarded before you applied your grass seed because, grass seed WILL NOT germinate, if it's not in contact on the soil. When grass seed is just sitting on top of dead and good grass, you're only wasting pounds of grass seed because it's not going to germinate, if it's not in contact with the soil, and watered.
I have nowhere to dispose of the waste grass. That’s why I used the power seeder.
And use commercial tow unit
Thanks
All the he pros say don't use glyphosate pn yards itself its for beds but nice to see wat my customers have to gonthru with limited equipment helps me justify my fove hundred dollars price they luky lol
Right
I'll agree with others, your mistake was not scalping and raking all the dead grass.
Disposing of the waste would be my issue.
Wow, no PPE.
Thanks for your concern ❤️
I definitely would have done a scalp and bagged all the clippings first.
Yes that’s a good practice.
Glyphosate link? 😉
Thanks for the reminder! Glyphosate herbicide 👉🏻 handydad.tv/8oml
Check out heritage Artimuss tall fescue
Thanks I will
Lack of prep killed the outcome.
😩
Back to a condo😂
That’s where I started!
I use to own that Clausen seeder. Not only is it difficult to operate.......it's total JUNK!
I absolutely agree.

Most weeds are green. Who cares, IMO. Trying to keep a perfect lawn is overrated, and waste of time. IMO. I have been here and learned unless you want to spend almost everyday in your lawn, do not try to keep it be perfect without weeds.
I agree and I’m not looking for perfection. I also regret this effort. I should have waged a better assault on the weeds and just done simple overseeding.
Well, there is something between a weed-filled yard and a perfect one.
Your video is a free ad for calling 811 before you dig and for hiring a professional for major lawn projects. Unfortunately, some folks insist on learning the hard way. “…leave the dead grass. It’ll be fine”. Geesus. No knowledgeable lawn care person believes chemical aeration is effective on compacted soil. You really don’t know why your germination sucks? It’s because you left dead grass all over the reseeded areas. Limited seed to soil contact and where there is contact the seed is robbed of light. Even Pete’s excellent seed cannot overcome the barriers and stumbling blocks you impose. My friend, I hate to be the one who breaks it to you. But your video is chock full of bad advice. I hope no one who is watching this video takes your methods seriously.
Have a nice day.
Where’s your PPE my friend?
I wore long pants and shoes in the summer instead of shorts and flipflips.
