Thanks Mark, really enjoyed that! I own a 530 Tmax DX and absolutely love it. I know there are some comments about fuel consumption. I easily achieve 60mpg on mine and quite happy to open it up (often!). Superb for overtaking in S mode as well as filtering along all those hideous traffic queues! I'm coming up for retirement soon and will definitely be getting the 560 Max Tech having seen your review (obviously haven't told the wife that yet!). It really makes a huge difference having the extras especially as I use it in all weathers to commute. Luxury biking - all the fun of a motorbike with all the advantages of a scooter. Cheers, Pete

Steve, scooters are so amazing these days, one doesn't have to hassle with top heavy bikes, clutches and foot brakes anymore. I rode many big touring bikes (Gold Wing GL1100 Interstate etc.) in my younger days, earlier this year I bought an immaculate ST1300 based on those fond memories... I kept it for one month and did less than 50kms, I just found it too big and bulky.

Great review and finally someone who "gets it" re. cruise control on big scooters (can't believe only Yamaha offer it though makes buying decisions easy!). I bought an ex-demo 530DX last year and absolutely love it - not cheap but I think of it as a half-size FJR1300AS rather than "just" a scooter. It's fast, comfortable, handles and is just as much fun as my "proper" bike which I barely use anymore. About the only thing I'd change would be for a TFT dash with Android Auto/Apple Carplay (as mounting a phone isn't easy), but apart from that the old school clocks are fine and clear. When I trade in my 530 I can't see me getting anything other than another TMAX!!

A superb bike which was a demonstrator with only 600 miles on it, for £8500 I think I got a bargain. I used to ride a Honda integra nc700 with dct. I rode through London every day around 40 miles commute. After a year I part exd it for my Honda forza 300 2018. I found that the Integra gearing was annoying and I longed for a belt drive automatic or a tmax. The gearing could not decide if 1st or 2nd was best when filtering around 20mph. Also it was long and heavy for filtering. Also a lot of road noise leaked through the folks /dash area. I rode a tmax the 2nd generation and it was both smoother and quieter. I still am wanting to get a tmax but the forza 300 is pretty good. Great reviews Mark! I remember you saying if money where no object you would have a tmax in your collection.

Nice to find another rider enjoying the same bike.

  • @gorrdd

Thanks again, Mark. I agree that this TMax 550 is better than the Forza 750. Yamaha gives the rider what he wants. Where as, Honda low ball's it, leaving one wanting for more.
It's not about engine size as much as it's about weight vs torque/hp. Yamaha nailed it again on this offering. Great engineering and great marketing.
The only thing missing is a bit better gas milage. I was expecting around 65-70 mpg. I think they made the decision to tune for performance over milage.
However, Xmax 300 seems to be tuned more for gas milage, while still being rapid. But ya gotta love this TMax 550...

      @@markpulling12 Mark,
I'm curious. Do you like the Yamaha VCT or the Honda DCT transmission better? It seems that the DCT might have a bit more character, especially in manual mode.
When it comes to the Honda NC750 with DCT and the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT with speed shifter... I know you wouldn't punt... but would go for the gusto.
Yes, the Tracer is more money... but for what you get, it's priceless. Plus, the NC750 Is almost as heavy as the Tracer. But that extra cylinder and 150 more cc's really pushes it over the top.
I located two in my area that are new and for sale at Yamaha dealers.

As for seat height, when I'm stopped I must lean the scoot over slightly, so that my (left) foot is flat on the floor. You don't really need both down, unless there is a huge crosswind! They are fab things to ride - they do everything apart from go offroad. I've had SEVEN of them over the years, but Yamaha's build quality is declining. The early ones were super reliable but I've had a whole series of failures on newer versions. Latest thing was that the rear shock absorber failed after 11,000 miles. So I'm looking at the Forza 750.....

For some reason I am really sensitive to bumps in the road. I just feel like I'm being jolted up and down for the entire ride when on country roads. All suspension seems harsh to me these days.

But I’d love to have a little more power for some of the mountainous freeways here out west. The Burgman 650 is such a bloated pig (well over 600 lbs). Whereas this Tmax is only a little heavier than the the Burgman 400. With 562cc ! I suppose it doesn’t matter now, as the B650 is discontinued. I’m not thrilled with the Kymco AK550. I have a 2009 Tmax 500 cc and consistently get 54 mpg. I had a Honda 750 Shadow cruiser and got 60 mpg. The cvt transmission is not so efficient as well as the higher revs on the Tmax.

    Is that the comfort seat?
    Or standard T Max seat?
    LED indicators?
    Regards.

@@markpulling12 cheers Mark, I upgraded the standard X Max 300 seat to the comfort seat. Huge difference and looks 100 times better.

I like how the British review bikes. I don't care about cool factors, just tell me the facts.
    Thank you

How long do you think the engine will last, 50,000 - 100,000?

Hi michael yes modern engines with regular servicing and oil changes will do 50,000 + miles no problem :)
