Man this is so sad. I can’t believe he is gone. He left behind so much so many great memories. And a game as in Madden that will live on forever. Love you John and Pat rest easy to both of you the greatest 1-2 punch in commentary for the NFL

Football has never been the same for since John and Pat retired from the booth. Loved Frank, Dan and Al on Monday Night but there was nothing like John and Pat. Loved them both.

Rob Olson All of the Big 3 networks had talent. Now it's a bunch of hacks and dullards in the the Broadcast booth now and it's not just Football. Basketball and Baseball have a lot hacks calling games too.

Pat and John will be always missed. They hold a special place in my heart. The sound that makes me relax and enjoy my time on Sunday.-Pat and John calling a game on Sunday. Football will never be the same.
To me Al micheals and John Madden will always be the 2 best football announcers. Pat retired when I was 11 but I put him 3rd his voice was different calm I suppose stood out.

I can honestly say that the day John passes away, hopefully not for a long time, we will have officially lost the greatest sports commentating duo ever, and that makes me pretty sad.
So sad that he passed away yesterday. I loved John Madden. That man defined football.
It's good to hear that they were as close as you just figured they were listening to them call a game. You knew it was a key game when these guys were calling it.

Summerall's voice had a straight-edged old school sound. We were very fortunate to have a guy like him in our living rooms for so long. He could've randomly called people across America pretending to be a telemarketer, and within seconds 90% of them would've thought to themselves: "Holy Sh-! It's Pat Summerall!! Why is he pretending to be a telemarketer?"
I agree. Pat Summerall always had that great voice.
The only closest voice I could think of for the future would be Peyton Manning. But Pat Summerall and John Maddens voice in the cool fall air just brings back memories when I was a kid. Good thing we have RUclips so we can hear them play call. It''s about as close to time travel as were ever going to get.
Pat was the Walter Cronkite of football play by play announcers.
....only 8 super bowls called together...that's 13 big games where kids and fans were being cheated of the passion of football and American life.

@steelersfan7238 yes but I was being a little dramatic. Though he sits in his basement with TV's and hires people to work the TVs and put certain games on the TV's he does spend a lot of time with family when he isn't doing that

Its weird that he retired because of family, but now he sits in his basement with like 10 giant tv's watching football and doesn't spend time with his family.
Pat Summerall and John Madden were the best team. NFL commentary has been great since their deptarure but I still prefer the Madden/Summeral comentary the best.

Madden and Summerall are the best football announcing team. They are the Bert and Ernie of football.
Pat and John the special voices synonymous with the NFL. The regular games, the playoffs and the Superbowls you held our hands through the drama and enriched our lives. My late father was a big 49er, Montana, Rice and Lott were his champions, in your commentaries we both could tell you had such admiration for these guys talent, I think above all thats what people loved about you, that complete knowledge of the game no matter the team. You loved all of football and football loved you back. Love you both always, thanks for touching my life xxx
I was a little too young to watch and really enjoy Madden’s commentary but I certainly have vivid memories of his voice while sitting next to my dad on the couch as a kid when he watched SNF and MNF during the 90s.
